Interesting Facts about Honeysuckle Bonsai
1. **Variety**: Honeysuckle bonsai can be created from various species within the Lonicera genus, with Lonicera nitida (Box honeysuckle) being particularly popular for bonsai due to its small leaves and dense foliage.
2. **Fragrance**: Some honeysuckle species used for bonsai, like Lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle), are known for their fragrant flowers, which can add an aromatic element to your bonsai collection.
3. **Hardiness**: Honeysuckle plants are generally hardy and can tolerate a range of conditions, making them suitable for bonsai cultivation.
4. **Growth Habit**: They have a natural vining or shrub-like growth habit, which can be trained into various bonsai styles with proper pruning and wiring.
5. **Blooming**: Honeysuckle bonsai often produce small, tubular flowers that can be white, yellow, or red, depending on the species. These flowers can attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.
6. **Fruit**: Some honeysuckle species produce small berries after flowering, which can add an extra ornamental feature to your bonsai.
### Care Instructions for Honeysuckle Bonsai
#### 1. **Light Requirements**
- **Sunlight**: Honeysuckle bonsai thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- **Indoor/Outdoor**: While they can be grown indoors, honeysuckle bonsai do best when placed outside during the growing season to get ample sunlight.
#### 2. **Watering**
- **Consistency**: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
- **Humidity**: Maintaining adequate humidity is beneficial, especially when grown indoors.
#### 3. **Soil**
- **Type**: Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix, preferably with a mix of akadama, pumice, and lava rock.
- **pH**: Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7) is ideal.
#### 4. **Pruning and Wiring**
- **Pruning**: Regular pruning is necessary to maintain the desired shape. Trim back new growth to keep the bonsai compact and encourage branching.
- **Wiring**: Use wiring to shape the branches, but be gentle to avoid

Hi Andy Lonicera Nitida ( Honeysuckle ) are great to work on I have some very large and small trees, they are a pruner’s heaven as they as you say grow like crazy, they are very brittle so need to be careful, if you snap a branch but it is still attached you can glue it with super glue and clamp it and it should be fine, they can be a bit iffy with wire but they should be fine, stick the cuttings in bottle of water and before you know it you will have some more, I have done this with a branch an inch thick a few time and it has rooted, takes a bit longer to root but it will eventually. I have a doner bush in the Border which I let grow so I can take more thicker branches when I need them. Good luck with yours Andy.

I just ordered 2 Azalea plants for bonsai. One is a 2 toned flower. I can't wait to see flowers on them. Could you have waited till after the flowers died off before pruning?? Looking great Andy. truthfully, I have never deliberately stopped a flowering period with my azalea. Rather than wire I would prune some of those taller branches baack further. Then, when all the new buds start popping in a few weeks time you can let them grow a little and then prune off to the ones you actually want for next year. Next year just let them go until flowering and repeat the process to make the branching tighter and more compact. I have found wire pretty ineffective in my garden. Either way, loving the show :)
