I was coming home from a deployment, and one of the humvees we had broke its harmonic balancer on its way to the ship. It ran so rough we thought it would shake itself apart. All we had was a BDAR kit, full of JB weld. No one thought it would work, but we had nothing else. We slapped it together and moved it to the end of the line to cure. Wouldn't you know it? It started, ran a bit rough, but held together long enough to get it on a ship and a train, all the way home.

2 part epoxy. It's been my go-to solution for many situations.

I was looking for a solution to bind small metals together for an air rifle firing range where welding is not feasible due to pre existing lead. It seems that this structural epoxy will hold up enough for my uses.

Have you ever tested it on a butt joint instead of lap joint? I know the surface area is alot smaller.

Great stuff jb weld

I cut little pieces of fiberglass drywall tape and put in on the surface of the jb weld then put jb weld over the fiberglass pieces. Also, I degrease the surfaces and score them deeply with a utility knife (for plastics) making as many scratches as possible. This way you can bond even un-bondable plastics. The fiberglass reinforced jb weld repairs are stronger than the original part or assembly. Surface roughing is probably the most important step. For bonding metals, it's best to grind off the surface of the metal to expose perfectly clean metal, degreasing before and after the grinding. I have done all kinds of repairs this way.

i use JB weld for everything needing bonding,and more you can machine it and work with it and so many ways I love the stuff a few products live up to there hype but JB Weld is one of those products the same with mothers aluminum polish it's another product that does what it says. It's going to do thanks for showing me that I guessed 3 tons by the way.

I don’t think that the tearing sound is the glue cracking. I think this is most likely due to metal compression. Hence the detonation.

I've used JBW for years. We have also tried to make it a bit stronger by adding in a bunch of iron filings in the mix. We didn't really test as Jon has, but it's always worked for us.

Using angled mesh would have backed up JB Weld.

i am curious as to how the High Heat JB Weld (not the Extreme Heat JB Weld) product would perform in the same test after thermo cycling a few hundred times. yes, surface prep is everything with this product.

I have used JB Weld several times and have often been disappointed. Several days ago I tried the Steelstik and am still waiting it for to get really hard.

What is it with people talking too dang much in their videos instead of just doing the dang test. Shush already, like the content but too much talking. You can explain your hypothesis, and data with fewer words.

Back when I was in the industry that used epoxy for industrial purposes, it was not always specified but the PSI specifications where actually in compression. The manufacturer would send one inch square cubes of epoxy to a lab to be crushed. Then the PSI was recorded and the average was then put in the data sheet. I know of none that where tested, specified or claimed PSI ratings in sheer or tension. All where tested in compression. So for many that number was useless when used to bond items together. But made the epoxy look better then it was Most of the epoxies where used to bond to concrete so as long as there was concrete failure first or concrete left stuck to the epoxy it was considered a success. And concrete is about 10x weaker in tension then compression. So it was a pretty easy test to pass. Even the weakest epoxies passed the test Most epoxies we used had PSI ratings that started at 8k PSI and went up from there. Highest I can recall I think was a bit over 16k psi. Or about "3x" stronger then JB Weld. The novolac epoxies where especially hard. Often topping 12k PSI. I don't remember what chemistry the 16k PSI one was but it sounded like glass when tapped, it was so hard. Broke into shards when struck with a hammer. This was the remnants at the bottom of the mixing bucket We mixed a lot of pigments, fillers and thickeners depending on what we where using it for. And these always reduced the PSI of the epoxy. The test samples where always pure epoxy with no pigments or other fillers. Probably why JB Weld is not rated higher as it comes with fillers and pigments already in it

4 tons? That's just insane. I just repaired/covered a hole in my intake manifold using steel epoxy (JB weld equivalent) and was slightly worried if it would stand 20PSI of pressure and heat cycles. I guess no worries then huh =D Thanks for showing this in practice!

Glued joins are most vulnerable to peeling, so combination of glued and rivetted or screwed join is ultimate winner. Of course, extensive re-engineering of a part is necessary to accommodate glued join.

Did you try running the simulation with the reinforcing plate on a chassis with cracks/stress risers? Wondering if that might guide you/others whether to undertake sheet metal repairs or just reinforce with the plate…
