We're only human Jon, if you don't make mistakes your not doing anything. Personally I would just restore the car, absolutely beautiful cars, particularly the v8, but it's your car. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your work and explaining the engineering.Very professional.
Just found your channel and watched all your videos (vlogs?)! I've always loved the Lotus Esprit and its been a dream car for me; Im looking to purchase one so been looking through UA-cam for inspiration. Your vids are very informative and easy to watch. Any further development with your Esprit?
Quick back story : Initially I put the 1st assembly together correctly but convinced myself I had actually got it wrong because the seal was rattling around. So when I did the second assembly, that confirmation bias kicked in and ensured I screwed up the 2nd assembly instead ! 🤣 Good job I didn't cut the original one off. Happens to us all I guess, but a fairly expensive mistake to make. I appreciate this may be sucking eggs to most of you but if it helps someone then job done 👍
I was wondering how you got the old inner race/seal off initially. I think I see from your comment below. So If I were to change wheel bearings I would not take that part off, unless it was damaged. I would just press off the outer race and replace the bearings? That was cool how the race just cracked! hat thing is under some tension.
You wouldn.t need to touch the little stainless plate which caused all the drama, I only did because I had the hubs vapour blast cleaned and repainted. If you were changing the bearing tho - you would need to do the grinding stuff - they are pressed on unlike the front bearings so yep under a bit of tension.
Okay Jon, thanks for replying, hope things work out for you. You have made some very interesting videos, and you do good mechanical work, even though I have never used 3d scanning or any cad work, I was impressed with your videos on these subjects as well 👍
This is a good informative video! Sorry you discovered this problem. I always cringe when I make mistakes which cost money... Thanks for showing us the steps you needed to take to do the job properly! Best regards, Mo-
As a transmission tech most of my working career, not for a dealership where you are repeating the same task repeatedly , but where I was faced with many types of different models ( C-35 comes to mind), I can tell you that its easy to get confused with some of the internal transmission component designs. Many times I have had to rethink the reassembly of some unfamiliar units. No shame brother! Ross.
Its all good - tbh it was a perfect storm of events so I'm not that worried. 99% of the time you never remove that plate - it was only because I restored the hub and painted it that I took it off. Its just one of those things.

Yep, it is helpful to learn by others. And always keep a garbage bin nearby for practice parts. 😀

jon, whats happening with the lotus.
very little I'm afraid - I simply can't get people to do the work I need. Whole project lays on a knife edge right now, huge shame.
