Great idea. They do spray a de-ruster on it a few days before. Then they use an air compression driver tool to kind of jack-hammer the big chunks of rust. Then they spray again, let sit a few days and grind off finer rust. Then paint with sealant and deck paint. It's tough tedious work mostly on hands and knees!

I lived in Humboldt County for 30 years. A wonderfully magical and historical place. How fortunate Hubby and I found Ferndale, Ca. We were a young struggling couple with little girls. Larry worked two jobs and went to college on the GI Bill to take care of us. He constantly looked for a job that would provide a decent wage and benefits for our family. He finally found one in 1974, when we moved from Sacramento, Ca. to Ferndale, Ca. so he could work at Centerville Beach, Naval Facility. My oldest daughter still lives there in Scotia, Ca. with her husband . My second grandson works at Scotia Redwood Mill, one the longest running company towns left. First grandson lives in Fortuna and runs his own business. I miss Humboldt County and consider it a highlight of my life to have enjoyed this area of the world. I go back as often as I can. I worked at Humboldt State U for 13 years and still miss that. It was a unique experience with great folks to work with and staff and faculty that were like friends and family. ❤ Centerville Beach Facility closed down in 1992 and we moved to Wa. State in 1993. Hubby and youngest daughter were fortunate again to live in a beautiful part of the world, in another small town, this time on the Puget Sound. Peace from Nicki and Sarah

This is awesome. Keeping the memory of the greatest generation alive. They should try and recruit youth groups from different organizations like the Scouts, Navy JROTC, Sea Cadets, schools, ROTCs, etc., and VFW and American Legion, even Active Duty and Reserve military units. If they get at least one or two organizations once or twice a month for a day or two, even spending the night on board, they can get more work done and bring that ship back to life. Maybe charge some money for entry to visitors, like at Patriots Point, to help cover the expenses.

I enjoyed living in Eureka for a couple years in the mid 90’s, incredible place to retire but be careful where you live though, much of Eureka has near constant overcast conditions but a few miles out of city limits is beautiful sunshine. The area was a magnet for useless hippies that sold their parents house in LA in the 70’s-80’s and moved north when they grew tired of the “diversity” in their neighborhoods. If I could, I’d live in Fortuna, great small town.

Thank You for the interesting video tour of "Old 1091." Back in the mid 90s, while living in McKinleyville & Eureka, my dentist was Ralph Davis, who owned this vessel at that time. He was a delightful man & a great 'old school' dentist. His deep-sea 'fishing trips' would often take he & his crew 200 miles out into the Pacific on this well-heeled ex-US Navy ship, & would last for weeks at a time. At that period The 1091 was docked near the under-bridge boat ramp near the Carson Mansion in downtown Eureka, California. I used to paddle my kayak around it at least 3 times a month, each time 'patting it`s hull' in appreciation for it`s role in America`s fight against tyranny during WW2 & beyond......

My dad and I used to drive our sand rail out there from our house off Peninsula Ave Arcata back in the 70’s. Someone broke into one and pulled out some big rubber rafts and other old odd and ends. We also used to go shoot our M1 carbine out there and sometimes we would go grab our 1941 Army truck and wench burls out of the surf. Good times back before the hippies started crying about everything and the Sierra club moved in, what a bunch scumbags those people are.

Really good video... thank you for all your work, research and presentation. The interview with Jon was really good, he's such a knowledgeable person. I've been waiting for really low negative tide to drone the Milwaukee, at least to see how much is still visible.... keep up the work, greatly appreciated... :) Dock

It'd be great if you could get some drone shots of the Milwaukee wreckage when it's completely exposed. The only other drone footage I know of is from Barry Evans and there was still water. Thanks for noticing the hard work Dock - "labor of love" as they say..for you too, I'm sure!

How kind of you to say so. We sent your words of encouragement to the 1091 crew - they're still working hard on that ship!

So glad you enjoyed it. Yes! I plan to film an update eventually. Been going aboard every few weeks or so to film their progress for that. Those guys are really making some great progress. They're working hard before the winter rains hit.
