- The story of the US Navy submarine (H-3) that ran aground on the coast of Humboldt County California in 1916. Includes the harrowing story of the 27 crew members trapped in the submarine for 10 hours before being rescued. Featuring special guest, Jon Humboldt Gates, author of "Before the Dolphins Guild" which chronicles the entire story.
I really enjoy these videos that go in depth about the history of this beautiful county we all share.
We're especially grateful to Jon Humboldt Gates for all his hard and diligent work in uncovering the documents and eyewitness accounts of this story! Since you find this story interesting, you'd enjoy his book "Before the Dolphins Guild" with so many more fascinating details - available for free check-out at the Humboldt library.
i've been in Humboldt now for less than 2yrs and am so grateful for these historic stories
Hope you get a chance to visit the USS Milwaukee memorial at low tide to see the remains of the shipwreck. There's a map of its location in this episode's intro.
Really good video... thank you for all your work, research and presentation. The interview with Jon was really good, he's such a knowledgeable person. I've been waiting for really low negative tide to drone the Milwaukee, at least to see how much is still visible.... keep up the work, greatly appreciated... :) Dock
It'd be great if you could get some drone shots of the Milwaukee wreckage when it's completely exposed. The only other drone footage I know of is from Barry Evans and there was still water. Thanks for noticing the hard work Dock - "labor of love" as they say..for you too, I'm sure!
Wow!! What a great presentation! I just finished reading the book, "Before the Dolphins Guild," by Jon Humboldt Gates, which chronicles these events.
This film is a wonderful addition that adds some great visual balance.
Nice work!!
Thanks! As you know, Jon's book has SO many more fascinating details we couldn't fit in our 20 minute +/- time constraint. The 1915 archival footage of the three H-class subs we found is pretty cool!
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 -- it was a great show!! you folks do a great job!!
Excellent, as always, Ray, thank you.
Speaking of beaches, the media has stopped covering what's happening at Centerville Beach; any chance for an update? Is there any parking lot left? Has it stabilized? I'm sure the geology of the area is fascinating.
Thanks for the Centerville Beach idea Korina. We're working on two new episodes now, so maybe after that? I haven't heard any updates on it either. See ya around town!
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 Cool! See ya!
