  • A small band of local veterans struggle to maintain a last-of-its-kind historic World War II warship ashore Humboldt Bay. If they are unable to relocate or refloat the ship, it will be scrapped to make way for the coming Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind Heavy Lift Marine Terminal.

Since we filmed this last year, they've made TREMENDOUS progress! Much of the upper deck structure has been de-rusted , restored, and repainted. It appears they've successfully sealed the deck over the summer to stop leaks during the winter rains. They've also done alot of work restoring some of the interior spaces. These guys are really working hard to preserve this historic ship! At some point, we plan to film an update of all they've accomplished since this was filmed last year

@@LoganJohnson-lm2bh That is VERY kind of you to say. I copied your comment and passed it onto the 1091 crew chief, Royal McCarthy, who is in the documentary. If you'd like to email him directly, it's RoyalBMcc@gmail.com

A trick I've used often on rust to slow it down is coat it with rust oleum until I'm ready to fully prep it and paint steel.

Great idea. They do spray a de-ruster on it a few days before. Then they use an air compression driver tool to kind of jack-hammer the big chunks of rust. Then they spray again, let sit a few days and grind off finer rust. Then paint with sealant and deck paint. It's tough tedious work mostly on hands and knees!

Dry docking historic ships is so much more efficient and cost effective. Those bozos back east almost lost The Sullivans due to their stubbornness.

@@humboldtoutdoors6082 The battleship New Jersey has a really busy UA-cam channel, and they often visit other ships. Reach out, they will surely have some others they can introduce you to ...
