    I compared the HB Oktoberfest vs the HB Original today (the first expiring 19-5-25 and the other 3-6-25 respectively). They taste pretty much the same to me, with the oktoberfest having a slightly bit more of a punch but the original showing much more carbonation in the glass. They are extremly close together, I would rate them about the same. Weihenstephan Original Helles a tiny bit better but Augustiner Edelstoff better and Augustiner Oktoberfest the best. HB is quite a good beer. They sell a at around 2,70-2,80 euro's at my bottle shop, WS original at around 2,30. So Weihenstephaner original would be the best value for money. For the best helles type of beer, go with Augustiner (edelstoff is €2,70 too, oktoberfest €3,15). HB is a safe and fine choice but it wouldn't be the number one in either best taste/quality or best to buy price/quality wise.

      Thank you for sharing! What’s the difference between the Augustiner Edelstoff and Augustiner Lagerbier Hell? I can get both if I order a package of 20 bottles (each) - might be worth it!

    • @robv.8676
      @robv.8676 3 дні тому

      @@SwedishBeerGuy The Augustiner Hell for me has a clear taste of barely, that lingers in the aftetaste. Overall it seemed more bitter. The Edelstoff is overal the most smooth, with no distinct aftertaste of any kind, it seimpl fades away. That's why I personally prefer the Edelstoff, I like a bit of a sweet and/or smooth touch and not much of a grainy (barely) taste, which seems more bitter to me. When it comes to these types of beers, Augustiner Oktoberfest is the winner, closely followed by Edelstoff (they really are close brothers), followed by Weihenstephaner Fest and Original Helles, then HB oktober and helles and then the Augstiner Hell and Tegernseer hell. And finally the Schönramer hell with a clearly pepper-iness to it and also that barely in the aftertaste. If I would be asked what I would like to drink a crate of (to drink over a during a couple of weeks), it would be Augustiner Oktoberfest, then the Edelstoff, then Weihenstephaner Fest or Original Helles, then HB, then Augustiner Hell. But I'd take them all over a good pilsner any day,

      @@SwedishBeerGuy looking forward to that test (vs an other weissbier?). It would be a shame to empty these glasses into the drain again. Testing 2-3 untried weissbier at a time, and doing a battle of the top 3-4-5 later on? Number 5 down the drain, the others can be consumed. I think found my top 3 weissbier (Ayinger bräuweisse, Andechs, Weihenstephan) but had a few others recently (Karg, Ayinger Urweisse). The Urweisse seems on equal level with the Bräuweisse. So during the holidays I will battle them against each other. Got some other Weizen too: Schneir tap 7 vs tap 1, Weltenburg vs Zillertal, Maisel's vs Karg Gold, Camba vs Patrizier, WS Vitus vs WS Dunkel. One, maybe two, battles a day. Got the same planned for some helles and export beers. Then when early spring comes around, I'll test the top 4-5 weissbier against eachother. Same with the top helles/export. And early next year? Either take it easy on the alcohol, or maybe try beers that are new to the ever changing stock of my local bottle shop. Hoping for some Giesinger (any beer) and Gutmann (weissbier). We will see. Enough talk, happy battling and happy holidays!

    There is a brewery in LaCrosse, WI called 608 which had a 3.8% Grodziskie called Step Twins on tap when I was there last April, It’s very unique smoky flavored kind of beer. Reminds me of Rauchbier (?) from Germany most notably Schlenkerla. My notes on Untappd only say “Sausage beer! Yah Vo!” So there ya go I liked it!! 😜👍🏻👍🏻

    Hefe = yeast Weizen = wheat Weiss = white So you can form any compound word with these parts. Hefe-Weizen Hefe-Weißbier Weiße But these are the words the breweries print on the labels. Infomally you order a Hefe or a Weizen (most common). It's all the same. It's "white" because the yeast is top-fermenting, not bottom-fermenting like lagers. So if the brewer looks into the "pot" he sees all the yeast on top of the liquid, all white.

    Side by side tests are great fun. The results can be a bit different from testing a beer and then trying brand a bit later, so these battles are useful and entertaining. I test various weizen myself over the past year (and did so with helles and other beers too, some family got warried about me, lol). My current ranking is as follows, though may change when I battle more beers and how my mood and taste developes: 1) Ayinger Brauweisse 2) Andechs Weissbier hell 3) Jacob Weissbier 4) Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier 5) Hacker Pschorr hefe weisse 6) Engel hefeweizen 7) Königshof Hefeweizen 8) Tucher helles hefe weizen 9) Grolsch Weizen (NL) 10) Primator Weizen (CZ) 11-19) Perlenbacher Weissbier (bit watery, but good taste), König Ludwig, Pinkus Hefe Weizen, Paulaner, Kapuziner, Patrous, Fransiskaner, Rothaus, Schultenbrau , ... . 20) Erdinger Yet to test: Ayinger Urweisse, Karg Hefe Weissbier, Unertl, Gutmann, .... , ?? I like the lighter coloured wheatbeers better than the darker (dunkel) version. So that's why for instance I didn't try the Ayinger Urweisse yet (but I will soon, it's in my fridge). Plenty of battles ahead. Not just Weissbier, but also Helles, Keller, Oktober, Pils and so on. Didn't try Maisel's and Scheider weissen yet either, not expecting them to rank in the top 10, so they haven't been a priority. These battles get a bit heavy if you try 3-4-5 of them against eachother.... Looking forward to your future battles. Pro(o)st!

  • @robv.8676
    @robv.8676 20 днів тому

    Your Weizen video is what brought me here, I got into Weissbier a year ago and after drinking various of the big brands myself, and did some battles myself. I was wondering how other people would rate and rank these beers and if they had recommendations for more beers to try out. When asking my friends, co-workers and so, many name Erdinger, as it's the most available in shops and so on, and a few said Weihenstephan was good too. To each their own, but it was good to see it wasn't just me ranking Weihenstephan at the top and Erdinger much lower down. Ayinger brauweisse is the one I like the most though. I seem to generally agree with your reviews of the various helles, Oktoberfestbeers and so on (must say Augstiner is the best here IMHO). So I will keep on watching your channel and a few German and UK based videos. The downside: this forces me to buy more beers to test, ans fewer of the big boring brands that are sold in pretty much every supermarket. To keep my beer consumption levels acceptable, I will just watch some beer videos as a surrogate... Haha, thanks, cheers, proost, skål!

    "Bock" refers to the male chamois. There was also a beer called "Goaß", which is the female chamois. This was also a dark beer, but with a low alcohol content. This type of beer has died out. After the Second World War, however, the "Goaß-Maß" was invented when the Americans were stationed in Germany and brought Coca Cola with them. This is simply a stein that is half filled with cola and dark beer. This makes the drink dark like the original Goaß and has a low alcohol content. In Bavaria, there are several mixed beer drinks with the 1 liter stein ("Maß"), e.g. Laternen-Maß, Schnee-Maß... (which are typically not drunk alone but shared in a group, e.g. a football team), but these are slowly being forgotten.

    • @SwedishBeerGuy

      @@jerrydifiore6623 It's confusing because in German "Dunkel" just means "dark" and you can put it to next to a lot of different beer styles to clarify it is "the dark version". If the beer is just called "Dunkel" you usually (in my experience) mean the Munich Dunkel style, but I think that can vary as well depending on which part of Germany you visit.

    Oh, I hadn't really thought about crisp. I think about hoppy as a term pretty often. To me there are multiple types of hoppiness and they can be specific - say citrus or even lemon or grapefruit - but there's also a general non-descript hoppiness that comes from hop bitterness that accompanies other specific characteristics.

    I always considered Bittburger as crisp. I may be wrong. (Jever is so dry, not unpleasant just a very noticeable contrast to my usual Bavarian Helles beers).

      And I probably call a beer crisp because of the mouthfeel after not necessarily the taste of the beer in the mouth….

    For me crisp in a beer I do tend to recognize it in lagers, which I also drink cold and not on higher temperatures like ales. When I talk about crisp in a beer I mean that in my opinion it comes from the malt and other grains that were used during the brewing process. I use it together with the terms biscuity and bready, which also tend to have a crisp hint of flavor. Like helles or pilsners for example. It’s that kind of bite that I experience while drinking a Helles or a Pilsner, which I’m assuming that it comes from the malts and the grains

    I think temperature is also a part of "crisp". A crisp beer needs to be light-bodied, dry, carbonated, but also cold. I think I wouldn't call a lukewarm pilsner crisp.

    I think you're onto something at the end there; I think 'crisp' as it's usually used in beer refers to notable acidity, particularly at the end of a sip-if acidity is present in the body of the sip it may be more appropriate to call the beer 'sour' than 'crisp'. (Similarly, a crisp sound is one with notable high-frequency overtones ie treble, but not necessarily a high fundamental note).

    Tjena Dadel! I personally would describe "crisp" as the feel of tiny bubbles. Like prosecco or the grains in an apple. As you said about crispy weather. When its crispy outside it feels like tiny water droplets hits the cheek. That is my impression of adjective crisp 👍 Ses på jobbet!

    One of reason I like your videos is because you go beyond the just normal phrases like fruity. I tend to be bland like that when describing a beer as my palate sometimes can’t pick out the different fruit taste. For myself, when I drink the first drink and it has a “ bite” makes your mouth tell your brain that the drink has a zest or kick at beginning, wakes your mouth up. That’s best I can describe crisp beer

    Serveringstemperaturen på en öl kan i ena fallet innebära att en öl är krispig när den är kall, kanske också lätt kyld (källarsval), men tveksamt om ölen blir ”varmare” än så. En ”varm” Jever kan ingen beskriva som krispig. Eller. Klart de kan. Men. Enligt mig har de fel. Då.

    To me crisp would mean dry, with no lingering flavours or sweetness, normally strongly carbonated. A clear crisp ending to the gulp. Where every gulp is like you compared as crisp as a bite of an apple rather than a spoon of Nutella.

      @SwedishBeerGuy I prefer non crisp beers. Full bodied like cream with strong foam. But I had a Meckatzer leichtes Hell that I would definitely call crisp, otherwise I drink Fischers handhalbe (spezial hell) which also has crispness. What I like most is Andechser export dunkel, Schlenkerla Rauchbier, Störtebeker schwarzbier. But I like to try different things like Måsen and lakrits. Yesterday I asked Copilot what crisp means in beer context and I would say it gave a good answer that fit ours here. Otherwise if I cannot really picture the subject, I think of the extremes, like carbonated water-cream, or Apple-Nutella . Crisp is somewhere in there. Most beers present themselves as crisp when very cold.

    Most beers that I would describe as “crisp” tend to have a light body and high effervescence or carbonation. The amount of bitterness does not affect this very much for me. I would agree though that there is at least some correlation with dryness👍🏻
