Slide Projector Lenses are cheap and cheerful
I took two slide projector lenses with me to the Tarrawarra Art Gallery to get some nice black and white images.
Slide projector lenses are easy to get, quite cheap, and can be adapted to any digital camera that has removable lenses.
For focussing, I use a helicoid, and then 3D print an adapter to mount the projector lens to the helicoid.
I shot in high contrast black and white, with jpg's straight out of the camera.
The lenses easily cover the Fujifilm medium format sensor with no vignetting issues.

Coffee 'N Cars - Shoot Local
Переглядів 242День тому
There's always the opportunity to get out in your local area and take photos of different events that are happening. Each weekend can be different, giving you a real good mix of different genres of shooting to practice. One event that happens each month in my town is called Coffee 'N Cars, where classic and hot rod owners bring their cars to a local cafe and raise money for a variety of chariti...
100 Year Old Kodak Lens on my GFX 50R
Переглядів 1,3 тис.14 днів тому
I took the lens off my 100 year old Kodak Vest Pocket Model B camera and put it on my GFX medium format digital. Can a single element lens one century old still make acceptable images when coupled with modern digital technology? I limited my GFX camera to shoot the way the old Kodak bellows camera did - I restricted the shutter speed to 1/30 sec, stuck to 200 iso to emulate film, and used the v...
Not All Photos Need To Be Art
Переглядів 26621 день тому
Sometimes we can feel the pressure to make every photo we take as ' Arty' as possible, and if we can't take amazing images, then why use the camera at all? Well, there are plenty of reasons to take photos that don't include 'making art'. In this video, I go out to record in photos the flooding that happening locally after a week of rain. Not for Art, but for historic interest. (and an excuse to...
Lining up Eagles Nest Rock and the Milky Way, Take 2
Переглядів 141Місяць тому
My second trip to Eagles Nest Rock near Inverloch, as I want to get a photograph of the Milky Way lined up above the Rock. I’ve timed this trip for low tide, no Moon, and hopefully a cloud sky to get the stars. Sometimes it can take multiple tries to get the image you have in your mind, into the camera. And when you get it, the time, travel and lack of sleep is worth it. I don’t have ads on my ...
Eagles Nest, Inverloch, at night and sunrise
Переглядів 210Місяць тому
I went down to Eagles Nest, near Inverloch, Victoria, to do some more ’No Light Photography’. However, the Moon was out and fairly bright, so I had to change my plans. And that’s Lesson #1 - if you can’t do what you were hoping to do, don’t give up, think of what you CAN do. Play the cards you are dealt. I still went out there at 1am, and was able to get some long exposure night shots, and also...
No Light Photography at Flinders Blowhole

I went down to Flinders Blowhole after midnight to get some No Light photographs. That’s where I take long exposure photos in the dark in the hope of getting an awesome result… I stuck around for the sunrise, which turned out be be spectacular. I also tried a cheap plastic kit zoom lens from an old Pentax film camera as I need a wide angle lens for my Fujifilm GFX 50R, and the equivalent GF len...
Go out and photograph around where you live.

You may not have to drive for hours to get some decent photos… I nipped down the road from my place to Olinda Falls to check out the Lower and Upper Falls. There was still some storm damage that hadn’t been dealt with yet, so some tracks and a viewing platform were blocked off. However, I managed to get enough shots to make the short trip worthwhile. Are there places close by where you live tha...
I was told not to criticise the Panasonic Lumix S9, instead, I reveal what's REALLY going on!

So, some people think camera corporations are infallible, know what's best for us, and should never be questioned. Then there's people like me who look at what they offer and think "You gotta be kidding me!" So, as well as revealing just what Panasonic are doing with the S9 (it's not about the camera, there's something far more important going on), I look at a list of camera fails from big name...
There's Always Something To Photograph

What do you do when you go out to photograph in certain conditions and what you find isn’t what you expected? Do you give up? Decide to try another day? Or do you think, I’m here with my camera, let's see what I can do to bring home some decent photographs? I went out on a nice foggy day to Maroondah Dam to get some shots of the trees in the fog, but by the time I got there, the fog had cleared...
No Light Photography at London Bridge, Portsea
Переглядів 2142 місяці тому
I drove for a couple of hours down to Portsea Back Beach after midnight and arrived in total darkness. Instead of going to sleep, I took my camera down to the beach to see if I could photograph London Bridge while the tide was still out. I was able to get some ripper shots in complete darkness with 8 minute exposures. Composition was difficult as I couldn't see what I was shooting, so I'd take ...
It's Never A Waste Of Time

I got up early and went out in the cold of the first night of winter here in Australia to see if I could photograph an Aurora. I got nothing from that plan, so instead of packing up thinking I'd just lost some sleep in a warm bed, I looked around where I was to see what else I could capture. I was rewarded with some nice nature shots, and then something unexpected happened... All the gear used ...
Pulpit Rock, Cape Schanck, Victoria

Despite having a bad cold, I dragged myself out to Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula to shoot Pulpit Rock. The tide was on the way out, so I had plenty of time to clamber over rocks to get a variety of compositions. I used my Fujifilm GFX50R and GF 35-70 lens, with some ND filters. All the gear used in this video is mine, bought at full retail with my own money. I don’t have ads on my ch...
What's all the fuss about the Lumix S9 Launch?

It's no longer a SECRET! Guerilla Bay Rock Arch
Hi Greg, great tip about looking behind you. Was taught that back in the early 80's, always look behind you and you'll see things from a different angle. Still do that today.
A three parter.... 1) A bit complex this one... the Fujifilm sensor is a X .80, so the 85mm would be about 68mm equiv. however, slide projector lenses don't gather light from the front, they gather it from the rear (to project light), so who knows what the 85mm or 100mm actually refers to... 2) My son in law does the CAD and printing of my adaptors. 3) I haven't noticed any, but then I haven't bothered trying much video with them.
Nice photos again! Is that a full frame sensor -- i e., are these 85mm equivalent as well? Do you make your own 3D adaptors, or does someone do then for you? Do you get colour aberrations if you film in colour?
The hype basically doubled the price.. However I already have a few I purchased years ago. Nobody cared back then..
I have a few of these compact cameras. A Canon, A Nikon and a Samsung. I almost never use the Canon. Why.. Because with the Canon I need to take out the battery and put it into the charger. With the Nikon and the Samsung they charge via USB cable, while I cam copying the pictures to the PC. So it is super convinient. These little things make a difference in real world. At least for a casual guy like me..
When I got an X-T2 I found myself using front button focus. Works really well. I have an H1 on the way and I might just keep on with front button focus. I also use autofocus similarly and rarely see the need for AF or CAF. While it’s nice to have a snappy focusing lens like the XF35 f2 it’s great using fully manual lenses and many times I prefer that experience.
Many Fujis are becoming collectors items - no wonder Matt ‘Mr Leica’ posted last week that he couldn’t understand why Fuji owners were willing to pay good money when they could own a Leica - even my XT 1 has gone way up in value !!
Those are all really nice shots!
Lovely shots and great work mate.
Adding "cake" would elevate it to Perfection Status 😉
I do love some Coffee Cars (and Cameras) ... 🦘
Crisp and nice! 👍
Thanks for the great idea, great images, and great video.
Would be fun to see in colors
Fascinating. You made me get my Kodak 1A Junior to double check the lens. It's an f6.7 127mm. Ah, the smell of old leather and nostalgia...
I have a vest pocket camera lens, a different version. I have used on my Canon M-50 cropped mirrorless camera. I have not tried restricting it like the original camera, will do so now. Working on trying to adapt it to my Canon FTB and Canon EOS 10S 35mm film cameras. Do like the photo I have taken with it so far.
Blimey Greg. You got some remarkable results with that little lens. Top marks for ingenuity.
Awesome !
Mechanical device to assist perception, imagination and sense of aesthetics. I love the film advance lever and the reopening mechanism.
Surprisingly good images ...🦘
Pretty good for mass produced old design
@@GregCarrick - I didn't know they mass produced lenses back then .. 🦘
@@roybixby6135 yeah, around 2 million of the Vest Pocket cameras were made. That's why there's still so many around today :)
I used to know 35mm cameras as "SF," small format. I didn't know "full frame" until it became necessary to distinguish from "crop sensor."
That is as vintage effect photography today as it was 100 years ago. Good exercise with a great outcome.
Must try it with some old wooden railway bridges...
Beautiful pictures Greg
Proper vintage look to all of those photos, genuinely looks like the sort of old pictures from family albums or museums. Nice work :)
Thanks, I must use it at a vintage car show or something to complete the look :)
the 18 has worst fuji focusing and vastly OVERPRICED...Truly needs a REDO add LN focus and WR
A part of the video was shot with the camera in view being off (no change on the top panel window) w t heck
I can make good photos with my phone, but none that I actually want to. It doesn't do raw, and I don't have much control. I can make good photos with my EOS 30D, but live view on my 60D is a useful improvement. Arguably my 80D doesn't do much that my 60D doesn't but I like the flippy screen, and the focus tracking is useful and the AF is outstanding. With my eyes, that matters. I misunderstood the "benefits" of fullframe cameras when I bought a 6D, by the time I lost it I had a collection of TS-E lenses, and for me those are important enough I needed a replacement. At the time, the cheapest replacement was a 5Ds. I sold the 5Ds after I got a cheap Lumix S1R with which can make every photo I could with the 5Ds, and a few more besides. And it has some nice convenience features. Mostly though, I use 20 Mpx Lumix G and Olympus cameras which can make photos I could not make with the 5Ds which is what I was using in 2019. I might buy an OM 5, I'm not as strong as I used to be, and hope it will fit into a pocket, maybe with a lens attached. If not the OM 5, then its immediate predecessor.
Some really nice photos here Greg! Quite arty too, especially those last ones mate✌️🇦🇺
Ten second video clips might be interesting to a museum or NLA, someone who records history.
My favorite of the photos is the thumbnail/splash pic of the tree. And thank you for your post. :) Be safe, sir.
Capture the moment ? 🦘
well, I was a photojournalist for some years :)
@@GregCarrick I shouldn't judge ? - I was a product photog for many years ... 🦘
@@roybixby6135 that wasn't my point... I was saying that's the way I'm wired to take photos.
Nice video, you still rocking with that X70? :)
No longer. Someone else has it now. I tried the X100V for two years and just didn't like it, so I have found the X-E4 is just what I'm after. Basically an X70 that can change lenses.
You're very sweet, really liked your video and helped me in taking the decision to buy this lens or not! Thank you
Wonderful idea to use good old Glas :) Do you have IG or email to contact you?

I have this sigma but hood gone
Super nice Greg, great shots and you really nailed the Milky Way. Looks a little scary there at night, please be careful moving about.
Persistence pays, obviously. I like the results. And your explanations.
Love my ttartisan lenses. The 25mm f2 was my first. I also own the 35mm f1.4 and 50mm 1.2. Have my eye on the 17mm f1.4. I know not everyone is into manual focus but I’m having a great time. Having a Fujifilm with exposure triangle and other features at my fingertips (X-T1 & X-T2) with manual lenses is like driving a sports car instead of a luxury car. Not for everyone I’m sure but great experience.
Great video! Unfortunately the lens that you are using is no longer cheap.
That's a shame, it's not a premium quality lens. Good optics, cheap build.
I have to admit, it's great watching the videos again and you get more from the images that you may have missed on the first go. This time I figured out what to say. These particular images seem like they are alive if that makes any sense, and it makes you want to just jump in and swim. I have only one such image in my files and it was from my Olympus E500 down at the Hook beachfront. I was gunning to make a Kodachrome shot which I love and when I looked at it I said .. yup .. Kodak CCD Oh Yeah. Not quite as good as Greg's but in all honesty this one could hold the tail wind.
Super nice Greg, saw them on my tablet, even more stunning on my big screen TV. I can't wait to do some more long exposure shots. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you could hand Greg a pink kiddie camera off Amazon and he can take it and make it sing. Thanks again for sharing, The shots with the stars really have a magical quality to them, spot on getting the moon in the one frame.

You'll confuse my 'Merican viewers... "Daddy Who? Daddy Cool"
Wow Greg, you really turned up the heat on these, absolutely beautiful stunning shots. Thanks so much for sharing and showing how cool the Australian landscape is. I love long exposures, but none of mine are even close to these. I gotta try the dark thing.
It's a fun experiment, and the results can be awesome :)
Beautiful sunrise shot. I went SCUBA diving somewhere around there many years ago, I can attest to how steep the climbs are after lugging all my gear down to the "beach" from the car park.
It's still a popular spot for diving, there were a few there a bit after dawn.
Awesome
Great effort for an excellent sunrise shot.. BTW is that you squeaking or your kit 😅
It's my camera bag, I swear!
Wow Greg, amazing long exposure shots and in the dark! How on earth do you work out the exposure times🤔✌️
It's pretty much guesswork. Although when it's that dark, a couple of minutes extra barely makes a difference, so it's all very forgiving.
Remember, four minutes to eight is one stop. Failing all else, guess. Then adjust as seems best. Next time, your initial guess is informed by experience. You could possibly get a reading by pushing ISO beyond reason. However, some of my cameras measure exposure over the exposure duration. Gets progressively annoying as you go further and further beyond 1s. With Olympus and I think recent Lumix cameras, you have live composite or something - you see the image as it develops on the back of the camera.
