Samyang 12mm Lens for Fujifilm
I've been using my Samyang 12mm for a few years now, both professionally as a photojournalist, and then for my own projects and enjoyment.
As it's years old now, is it still a lens worth considering? Is it the same or better than the Rokinon 12mm lens? Should it be on a short list of wide angles if you are looking for one?

All the gear used in this video is my own, bought with my own money at full retail prices. I have no sponsors, no affiliate links, and no links to any company, distributor or manufacturer. I make no money off my youtube channel at all. All opinions are mine based on real world use.

Fujifilm Autofocus firmware fix, Why Is It Being Ignored?

So, Fujifilm release Firmware 7.1 which makes huge improvements to the autofocus of their top tier cameras. And the big UA-cam photography channels are ignoring it. Why? Why have the smaller guys covered this release while channels like Petapixel and DPReview been silent? Conspiracy, laziness or ineptitude? There's accepted ways to photograph certain events. With car shows, you are expected to capture the beautiful paint jobs, the polished chrome, the detailed engines.... but when you've done that year after year, you want to try something different, or you'll go mad! So I did... I went the opposite of what is expected. Instead of colourful, sharp and bright, I went monochrome, blurry and grainy. ...

Two Tripods, Neewer and Freewell. How good are they?
Переглядів 234Місяць тому
Tripods can be the best investment a photographer makes, but what sort do you need? Many photographers end up with two tripods, a strong sturdy one that usually weighs a lot, and a smaller lighter tripod for travel. I have the Freewell Sleek Travel tripod, which is so light I barely notice it strapped to my bag. For studio use, or for very rough conditions, I just bought the Neewer TP27, which ...
When Things Go Wrong, It Can Be Alright!

My last astro photoshoot at Mount Donna Buang was photobombed by two carloads of people wandering around with torches. I thought a lot of my shots would be ruined. Yet when I checked them out, a few shots with car lights and torches gave some interesting effects. In the end I was glad I kept shooting and didn't just pack up in frustration. So when things go wrong, I'm going to keep shooting any...

The NEW Fujifilm X-M5 vs Panasonic Lumix S9

The Lumix S9 is in my view the camera that the Fujifilm X-M5 is most comparable to, and reviewers of the X-M5 are not making that connection. So I thought I'd better compare these two cameras that are made so specifically for young content creators. Both cameras have advantages and disadvantages over each other, so we go through what those are, and you can determine which are important to you t...

TTartisan 100mm lens on Fujifilm Medium Format
Переглядів 5073 місяці тому
The TTArtisan 100mm 2.8 lens was made for full frame/APSC/M43 however it also works on the GFX cameras. The news is mostly good - it covers the whole sensor, it's easy to focus, it does produce bubble bokeh as well as sunstars, it's dirt cheap. BUT, TTArtisan don't know how to fix the m42 mount so the lens is the right way up on the camera. Every other m42 lens I have is fine, until it comes to...

I go back to Flinders Blowhole to do some more 'no light' photography around 3am. The tide was coming in, and the waves kept swamping the rocks I was set up on with my tripod. I kept retreating, eventually ending back up on the beach, until that too got swamped. There was nowhere left to stand then so I had to call it a night. I then went up onto the cliffs to see if I could get some sunrise sh...

Fish Eye Fun with the Takumar 17mm f4

Is a fish eye lens a gimmick, or can you use one for serious photography? I take my SMC Takumar 17mm f4 lens out to test it. The lens was produced between 1975 and 1985. It's not a super wide fish eye, but does give you a nice wide angle with some curvature. I tested it on my Fujifilm GFX 50R, which has the ability to switch to full frame mode so you keep the focal length of any vintage full fr...

I never knew there was a difference between the Rokinon and Samyang! I do have the Samyang 12mm lens and although I always wanted to like it, I actually never did like it... Yes it is OK for astro, although optically it has some issues. For wide angle landscape, the corners are not very good. (I did a comparison with the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 and that lens has much better corners). It's not always important how good the corners are, but on some photos it does bother me. However most of this I could live with if I didn't have the Viltrox 13mm as alternative. What really bothers me about the lens, is flaring when shooting with the sun in the frame (and yes as far as I remember, I did use the hood on the lens...). However that is my personal experience! I know that many people love it.
I've heard good things about the Viltrox 13mm. It seems to be the modern go to for wide angle nowadays.
@@GregCarrick It is also a lot more expensive than the Samyang 12mm, and a lot bigger and heavier. Those are its drawbacks.
@@TimvanderLeeuw There is that :)
Reminds me of an old tune, "Love the lens you're with". Seems a great all-rounder and light. Weight has suddenly become more of a consideration for me than ever before.
It's a great walk around lens. I forgot to mention I also use this sometimes for street photography.
Love this lens for astrophotography 😊
I have the same gear. I wish I had kept the 9mm I had a year ago, as I paid about a quarter of it's ebay price locally. Damn bills....or was it all those muffins and coffee? So you're ok with the edge sharpness... Do you find the Fuji focus assist (I use the red high) is harder to see with this as opposed to other manual lenses?
There's a bit of curvature at the edges if you're doing astro, but it doesn't worry me. I'm ok with the peaking, and usually zone focus with the lens.
This is a very timely video for me and anyone else who gets GAS. I got it when I only had the 35F2 and 18-135. It was a place holder for some more expensive AF lens. I get very good images with it with the HR sensor and it is very sharp from F2. Lately I've been tempted by GAS to get the Viltrox 13, the Meike 10mm or the Sigma 10-18. Then I remember that this lens has never let me down. Its around $250 in the US new when on sale. I don't think the AF version has the same optical formula or sharpness in the corners. The close focus is only 20cm.
Hi Greg, I have two of these lovelies. One is M43 on a Lumix GH3 and the other is for an X mount yet to be in my mitts. Agree 100% with you, it’s gotta be the best zone focus lens ever. Thanks for your vids and have a great 2025 ✌️🇦🇺
Cool, and have a great New Year yourself
"Use your camera to enjoy it" - great advice, thanks!!
Ok I watched this some time ago but missed the night shot with the lights on the water, OH WOW !!, I have one similar of my own but it would not hold a candle to that (no pun intended .. lol) Greg absolutely breath taking, I'm a sick puppy for lights anyway, but I just wanted to jump in the frame and swim ! The other shots are spot on as well !
Thanks, it's the sort of shot you can get if you have the time to scout an area and wait for the moment.
Awesome review and demo Greg, and usually whatever I see on UA-cam I can't afford (Leica etc .. lol) However although I have many tripods from thrift finds and a gift or two, they are all not very good under adverse conditions. So in a moment of weakness, I found it on sale from B&H and they say it will come tomorrow ?? So 99 bucks shipped and one day delivery ?? Well I did not get anything for Xmass, so I shook the piggy bank and just enough fell out .. lol Thanks so much for showing me something that will do all the types of shooting my others just can't. I hope I don't break it somehow .. lol All my best and have a Happy New Year.
For the price it's amazing! And Merry Christmas to you :)
Happy holidays Greg, and I could not agree more. Your shots are truly amazing and inspiring as usual. As the New Year approaches, I plan to use more of my gear more often. I'm finding my manual lenses more enjoyable as I get to hit focus better the more I try. (Eyeglasses, Diopters and no Live View ...Oh My) Ok some Wizard of Oz there ... lol Seriously though, you have taught me to focus in other ways, many thanks !!
Thanks :) All the best to you and yours, and enjoy using your camera.
Greg, I send you a message ages ago. I too have this bike and like you I am l am looking to upgrade to 500w bike with a throttle. I recall you did it. How is your riding experience a couple of years down the track? Any tips? Pros and cons?
It wasn't me that did it, it was a guy who bought it off me. He was very happy with his upgrade.
Thanks mate, I thought you upgraded to a bigger motor and bike. I’ve had mine for just under 3 years and have had a great time. But my battery is on the way out and I need new tyres so I am looking at about $600. So I am thinking about spending a bit more dosh and get something with a throttle and a little more range and power. Thanks for your info.
@@bobmcdougall8981 Yes, I upgraded to a new bike, instead of modifying the Fortis. There are plenty of 750W ebikes out there. Or you can look for a 350-500W version. Personally I think a higher ampage battery brings the best out of whatever motor you are running. Around 20AH is good. The Fortis was about a 12 or 13AH.
Looks like it had a similar form factor to the Olympus IS film series of camera from around that time. Also, nice video!! I want one now haha
Thank you for reminding me about my Voigtlander skopar 50/3.5 that I preyed of an old camera. See if I can get som use out of it on my Sony a7.
Dang Greg, we look so similar its crazy. You have a few years on me . 😂
Hello, how are you? I hope you’re doing well. I acquired a Fujifilm X100S, but it has a problem that no store here in Brazil can fix due to a lack of parts, and it seems that no one understands what is wrong with the camera. Basically, it turns on but the lens doesn’t open, and after a few seconds, it turns off. It always starts on the initial language menu and then goes blank. It also doesn’t turn on immediately when it turns off; it takes some time to turn back on, and sometimes when it does turn on, the screen flickers a bit. Have you ever seen this problem before? Could you recommend any help? Maybe replacing the motherboard? Do you have that part? Please help me; I don’t know who else to turn to in this case.
Get it done properly by sending it back to Fujifilm. Otherwise, accept the loss and get another second hand X100 series. THere are thousands of them out there, and sometimes what you have just isn't worth the money to fix.
I don't know if it's just me, but the store mentioned, has upped the price to $2400(AUD)+ ? Maybe larger demand?
That was two years ago. There will be more options around now too.
too many get a new camera before they learn the last...
New gear? What's that? I've been shooting with a 41-year-old camera today, and it was so much fun!
Put some Voigtländers on the Fuji to get rid of any AF questions!
Great shots, my friend!
Great advice Greg, Just starting to declutter my corner of our “study”. So I’m currently unloading some of my gear to the local Op shop and just keeping My G9 and 200D. Just need to allocate time to shoot… always lawns to mow and chores around the house too. 😢
...that leaves night times free ;)
I have been having a bit of fun with a Lumix GX8 lately. I think the colour is somewhat better than with the Sony I have had since 2012, and, although I have saved almost nothing in weight, I feel more comfortable with the Lumix, including better one handed operation. Something that is becoming clear to me is the time it takes to get on top of the features of a camera. I took photos at a pre-Christmas event this afternoon, and found my shots improving every few minutes as I tweaked settings, doing things I hadn't thought of before. And that implies that, unless you get a new camera which is almost the same as your older camera, you will have to go through that process all over again. Maybe it's best to get on top of what you have.
Panasonic make some good cameras, the GX line is well liked. And yes, familiarity can breed creativity :)
Thanks Greg and happy Sunday. I'm now going to grab the dog, my camera and a roll of HP5 and do just what you recommend.
I love my Fujifilm X-T3. It is the best camera I have used in over 60 years. My photos are fantastic, nearly as good as yours Greg.
Very creative!
I owned a 68 Impala for 10 yrs(sold it after 1st wife and I divorced) and have 1 mate with a 55, 57, and a 67 Camaro and another mate that has a 57 and currently doing up a 56. Oh and I currently drive a 1981 mazda 323 lol
Very wise words Greg 👌
I only have a little canon 200d(Rebel SL2) and its auto focus is great out to about 15 -20 mtrs, after that and especially to focus on distant tree's or subjects its horrible and needs to be manually focussed and its a 2018 camera. But as you say, get out and use it which i do almost every day even if its just a couple of hours in the front yard taking photos of birds although I don't post them to socials unless really good. Was the lookout tower by any chance the 1 in Bendigo at 1 tree hill, although it looks a bit bigger than that.
The tower is at Mt Donna Buang.
Some great photos! And although I've already seen many in earlier videos I'd have liked to have a bit more time to look at each picture, they went by so fast!
Nice work Greg👍🏽
Sabios consejos. Al final de todo, lo importante es hacer fotografías.
I wonder if half the problem is "that youngsters" don't know how to manual or pre-focus a lens?
can you recommend a good and not pricey camera that shoots nice nightmode pictures :) ?
Pretty much anything made in the last 8 years.
@@GregCarrickoh? im not the kind of person that knows a lot about cameras because im pretty much a beginner😅, however I do love old cameras and how they give that mesmerizing glowy feel with also other functions but I cant seem to find any good ones🤔 any help would be appreciated 😁
Thanks for the encouragement! I love using my Canon Rebel T2i (always with auto focus, though (-: )
I don't use Canon, but I've heard the Rebels are good.
Can you provide more detail on setting up front button "snap" focus on the X-H1? It wasn't clear how you set it up in the menu system
OK, go into Menu/Wrench. Go to Button/Dial Setting then Function (Fn) Setting, set Fn2 button to AF-ON. Also check that in Menu/AFMF you have AF+MF set to ON.
@@GregCarrick Excellent, thanks so much Greg! I'm always interested in how you "journo's?" work haha
Please yourself with your photographs, mission accomplished.
Hi Greg awesome content as usual. Just starting to some some night stuff myself. Had a spot of weird computer trouble comments disappeared ?? Oh well I fixed all that and you look great on the laptop running my new Linux Studio, lots of photo friendly stuff in it too. Thanks for all the content you share, I never fail to learn something. Wonderful shots as usual, but I may be biased, but I'm not sure you can make a bad shot .. lol, thanks for being the awesome you that you are !!
Ha thanks, I just don't show my bad pics :)
i am really in a debate at the moment about a new camera and thinking about the xt2 for example to use with vintage glass and the 18mm + 35mm fuji. sony would be the other option but i really kind of fear that going sony will result in leaving my camera at home more often because its just a small black box without character and fun and its also larger. not by HUGE amounts, but still an xt2 with a tiny 18mm is still a lot smaller than a sony a7ii with a 28 or 50mm. i keep hearing everyone online currently all of a sudden hating on fuji and i have a real hard time deciding if this is actually huge or if its the usual rant stuff. its kind of bizarre really and i guess people have money to blow? and you cant even trust those channels anymore either because they kind of change their mind every 3 months. 3 months ago: ''why i switched to fuji from canon and how it made photography fun again'' fuji awesome. 3-4 months later be like ''i am so done with fujifilm as a company and why i am switching to nikon'' its like... wtf is it with people switching systems every couple months?? i thought normal people just buy a system and then stick to that system for like a decade or so unti there might be a new camera type or mount that actually makes more sense. and it makes me also feel super old, even tho i m just 35. the camera i shot with for like 10-15 years was a nikon D90. People nowadays are like: the af is so bad, its not instantly doing ai eye tracking and what not. and i m like: dude... eye tracking is kind of alien to me to begin with. my old D90 just has af. a single point in the middle, it does af and you then pan the camera to recompose. and it worked for sooooo long. even if the fujis AF might have issues, i am just getting so tired of this endless discussion about the new AF tech as if thats all a camera is. for the most part i shoot manual lenses because i dont like af. Back in dslr era the first lens i bought was the Nikon af-s 50mm 1.4 G and i kind of hated it. i got a ai 50mm f2 from a flea market for 25$ and loved it. way better lens. sold the af one and since then, i shoot most stuff on MF lenses. To me for any sort of stills shooting where i dont need to track some fast moving objects, AF always means: i am giving up control and i am in the mercy of what the camera wants to focus on. there is nothing like having full control about your focus area that you can physically change with a tactile feel on your fingers because you are in full control of what happens. AF doesnt have that at all. Anyways, back to the firmware topic of fuji. i see it from a perspective of someone who is using windows since windows 95. Can updates suck? YES but here is an awesome tipp, that googled up on: if the newest firmware sucks... you can actually just roll back to an old firmware. x camera was really good in the past and they ruined it now? well then just roll back to the firmware were the camera was really good and then IGNORE firmwares for like half a year or a year and check back in next year when fuji have figured it out to see if its save to update now. imagine every time an update sucks, i would be like: i m switching to mac, i m switching to linux, i m switching to chrome os, now i m switching back to windows, new android update sucks i m buying an iphone now. oh new ios update has an issue with x, i m buying an android again. like... bro blindly updating a working system was always a bad idea. you always wait a bit and observe reviews of said update if it breaks anything or improves anything before updating anything. if it works... why upgrade in the first place? but hey... maybe its good people hating fuji now. this could mean: fuji actually gets more affordable again
Your generosity in sharing tips and techniques is always valued. Superb results.
Thanks, I enjoy these over the times I look at gear.
Nice work Greg !
Great video Greg, the images are superb, weather conditions just fell 100% right for you. A good thing about cameras now having USB-C charging is you can hook them up to a cheap powerbank rather than buy an expensive battery grip.
Yes, I might invest in one. The battery grip was good for my work as a photojournalist as I was always movning around a lot.
The xh1 time-lapse was my fav 👍
Thanks, it captured a lot more time, and caught some pre-dawn glow.
Awesome…. Thanks mate 😊
Wonderful stuff. Really informative as always. Thank you
Thanks, glad you liked it.
The problem is the bigger channels only ever care about hardware. It gets more views.
I think the manufacturers of real cameras will not get their act together from the user's perspective until someone can let a virus loose which kills the "cameras" in every mobile phone.
What a great idea, to use the camera in a totally different way from what's expected. Many of the pictures convey a sense of motion and speed that you wouldn't expect in pictures of cars just sitting still! Thanks for the creative approach.
Interesting thoughts about the big youtubers. It unacceptable that we are still waiting for the firmware for the XT5 and X100VI
We have a lot of Australian brands that import from China and charge $4k for there bikes, great video
Old school photographers got by with full manual focus equipment and no 10 fps. New age photographers just bag out camera systems on UA-cam to attract as many followers as they typically can to earn a reputation, new gen have all the tools at their disposal and still cant get it right!
This was the days when you could do a wedding and all the clients got were 30 photos across the whole day though. Couples want 600 in focus perfect photos now for the same money and try and get you to do video even if you say you don't do it 😂
@@Neardarkphotography 30 photo's ??? I very much doubt that. I was lucky enough to grow up in the film era and most of my family have wedding photo alblums with 100's of photo's for the day which still look great. Modern photographers just want the Ferrari but don't know how to drive!!
