What's the Best LIVE Sound Rack Mixer for 2025? Allen and Heath SQ Rack NAMM
Behringer Wing Rack may have just beaten Allen & Heath SQ Rack to the punch. However, the SQ Rack is sure to be an excellent mixer, and at £1,000 less than the SQ5, it seems to be the ideal choice.

Why Play Bass Guitar? - Free Beginner Bass Guitar Lesson
Im assuming, They made the mobile mix, and it did well so they figured they could double the price and sell a "Pro" product.
That is my assumption too! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Hey! Thanks for the video. I dunno the first thing about lights for bands. Is there anyone you know in the uk who could step in as a “lighting consultant? They could come to a show or a dressed rehearsal and advise on lights? For a fee of course. Then we can purchase them and I’d probably use some of the new AI driven like Maestro DMX to set the up and trigger at the right time.
Thanks for watching! Your probably best off contacting a hire company, they may be able to bring lights for you to try out and may even help with setting up the DMX protocol!
@ wow 😯 that is an amazing idea!! Thanks a lot
No worries man! I hope it works out! 🤟
This is very personal, and I have both the ac powered version of the mackie along with the livetra l8 (just sold it) and now the livetrak l6 (just bought). Flexibility of inputs/outputs/recording/monitoring definitely goes to Zoom. At least for me, I really use bltuetooth in between sets during live performances, and zoom does not have it. In some setups (don't know why), mackie gives me more room to cut off or boost on low and high freqs. Zoom is more expensive in the states. The battery debate, it can easily be worked around with the zoom and it can be cheaper and more flexible than the mackie. Efects in the mackie are way better and more flexible IMO. Like every other purchase, comes down to preference, usage and budget. I use both and love both for the seputs they are used in. Thanks for the insight, these are both good options and the perks of each are goot to keep in mind because they're enough for actually swaying potential buyers.
Thank you for watching! I can see what you mean; there are definitely cases for both! Bluetooth is great, but it's probably not something to sing and dance about! You can get a cheap battery-powered receiver for not a huge amount of money now, which is what I use when I don't have Bluetooth on my desk!
@@GaryOnBassexactly my point. There are ways around both. Just comes to the notion of actually being okay with those extra steps, but if you don't want the hassle, and maybe the other specs are not deal breakers, then good for you.
Great take! I'm sure some people will buy this, and more so once the price becomes a bit more competitive! But for me, the monitoring options on the Zoom make it far more flexible for multiple musicians! Plus, it has all the other functions mixed in, which adds even more flexibility! But I have little use for smaller mixers, so having more than one use poses a much better value proposition for me! But as you say, that may not be the same for everyone!
@@GaryOnBassI agree. That's why, depending on my setup, I can opt for any of my mixers, or any combination of all my equipement for that matter. We'll just see how it goes for this. I can actually see myself using it, but also will not consider it as my only go-to for every scenario.
@@josesedalopez9312 The Bluetooth on this also being bidirectional is great for live streaming events too, which is probably my deciding factor to invest in this; broadcasting the audio from my phone straight to UA-cam will be great for getting video to share with people that aren't in attendance.
They need a DJ crossfader version!
Yeah, if it did that, then this mixer would make much more sense!
@ exactly! Us DJs need a battery powered mixer! 💪🏽😁
Not to mention the rack effects. The Wing has so many of them and of excellent quality inside, right out of the box, without a penny more. The SQ rack you have to buy separately and they cost a lot, so you will have very few effects unless you are willing to spend a lot more money. So what's the point of this mixer? None, not even for quality. Now Behringer, since it incorporated Midas and other big companies, has started to make high quality products that are worth even more than their price. So even if I had money to throw in the trash I would not buy the SQ rack.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I think this is an opinion many will take! The audio quality will indeed be higher in the Allen and Heath, mainly thanks fto that 96khz sample rate, but I dont think many people will see that be if it unless they are running a high end rig anyway! I still think it has a place if your running a much larger setup and have already bought into the Allen and Heath system, its definitely got its place. But if your starting from scratch its probably a harder sell as its sitting right at the same price as desks with faders from Yamaha, Behringer, Midas, Presonus, and even themselves with the QU series.
Allen Heath don’t have xlr/1/4” inputs
That true! They are fairly rare in high-end mixers, but the QU series used to have parallel 1/4” jacks, so it's a little odd they removed them. It does have a pair of stereo jacks, which is equally rare on high-end mixers, too, but not a massive help! I would always run a DI box rather than jacks straight to the mixer anyway.
I’m considering picking these up or the DXR10 mk2’s. Recently I’ve been using a single pair of cheap Alto TS210’s for small acoustic jazz gigs running keys, bass (either upright or 5 string electric) and 1-4 vocalists. They have worked surprisingly well for these small gigs. However, I would like to upgrade these with something with higher output, greater depth of bass and improved overall audio quality. I would like to keep the weight down as low as possible. Do you still use your DZR10’s? Have you had any more issues?
If you want more low end nd your not running a sub then I would really recommend a 12” or 15” speaker. The DXR15 are surprisingly light and they are great sounding speakers! The DZR do get a bit heavy and expensive in comparison. I will say that I have blown three lower woofers in the DZR but I think the issue was actually with the limiter circuit, I had the first three in the country. So hopefully this wont be an issue with later models. I have used mine for around 300 gigs otherwise and still use them weekly.
@ Thanks. For a lot of the gigs I do I just need a very small pair of 10”s as it’s pretty low level music. If I went with either the DZR10 or DXR10 I would also look to add the DXS12 mk2 subs at a later date. I used to own the DXR15’s and totally agree they are excellent. I also used to own a pair of QSC KW181 subs but rarely used them. I’ve done large events with just a single pair of DXR15’s from a 320 seater amphitheater and a large cathedral and they have been extremely impressive!
@richardpenrose1968 yeah the DXRs are great speakers! The DZR10s definitely outperform the DXR10s by quite a way in terms of low end and volume and would make a great match for DXS12 subs too! But I just wouldn't expect masses of low end but more than the Altos for sure!
@ Thanks. When is the last time you had an issue with your DZR10’s? Have you used them by themselves since then?
@richardpenrose1968 First unit was dead not long after arrival, this was the oddest one as the speaker just entirely stopped, I have a feeling this was a loose connection but was replaced as with 30 days of buying. The second time was distortion in the lower driver, a year and a half in? The last time was last year (around this time), about two years into owning the unit with similar distortion and then stopping. Yamaha replaced all on warranty, I just had to pay postage to return! I run DJ music at the end of every gig at considerable volume on just the tops! I have also done a couple gigs without subs! 👍
Tell us you're not a wedding/mobile event DJ, without telling us. 😜 The Zoom is only $9 less than the Mackie (in the US). The Zoom may be better for bands/recording. 🤷🏻♂️
Haha, I'm a musician, and Zoom is definitely the better choice. Even if you only consider the monitoring options, it stands a long way ahead of Mackie! It's wild to me how different the prices are in the States! But even if Zoom were more expensive, I would still lean in that direction!
This works great for mobile DJs
Thx for your review.
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever listen to the QSC12C cause talk is cheap.
Reasonable points if you’re just looking at this as a standalone unit. But a big part of the value is having it integrated into an existing A&H ecosystem, which a lot of people have already heavily bought into. You now have a full-featured compact SQ IEM mixer in a rack case, connected directly to your existing A&H stage boxes, with a simple digital split via s-link to your FOH console. It’s also worth considering the differences in hardware/software quality, reliability, and ease of use. I’m not a Behringer hater by any means, but the quality and UI differences are substantial.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I can agree with that! My perspective here is from the musician's perspective. As a musician on any sort of budget, it's now a much harder choice if you're starting out, with the Wing being so fully featured and the price gap so wide! But if you were looking at this from a production company perspective, the SQ series is a definite win! I still think the SQ5 is a better option for monitor engineers, and I would want to run an SQ6 or SQ7 on FOH at that sort of scale. If you're using the ME system, I get it, but then you're REALLY in the A&H system, and the SQ-Rack is as good as sold! Haha Don’t get me wrong, though. I think the A&H will be an extremely solid, great-sounding mixer that is also very easy to use!
Hi Gary can i use my Rcf evox 12 Sub in this Yamaha dzr10..
Yeah I would imagine so as that is essentially an RCF 705 AS II which is what I use! You'll need to crossover at your desk though as I dont think there's an internal crossover there! It also has a split power amp so it isn't quite as powerful as the 705 so the DZR10s might outrun them a bit in terms of volume!
So you're reading out the specs and wondering which one is better? Hard to call ot a comparison video. Gets even worse as you're trying to compare A&H to Behringer....
Both companies build their mixers in China. These two rack mixers were released within a month of each other with a split of about £800. They are the same price if you are considering the SB Rack and the Wing Compact. So yes, it is a fair comparison in this instance, and many people will be deciding between them. This is just my instinct based on what information I have and what I feel would best suit what I do! I know I am considering them both for my next buy, but even with all the above, its highly likely that I’ll stretch to the SQ5. I said as much in the video! Thanks for watching!
The rack ears are made so you can tilt the unit up or down when mounted in a case. I think the A & H build quality is much better than Behringer.
Yeah I did meantion that but maybe I wasn't too clear! The A&H built quality should be better than that of the Behringer but only time will tell on that front! I can see the screen being a bit of a week spot on the wing if you are moving it a lot!
What are the facts? The AH is made by VTech in China. Behringer is made in-house in the same factory where they make all Midas consoles. Behringer has 3 year warranty.
Yeah, that was what I was getting at in the video. They used to be made down the road from me in England, but sadly no longer! And for context, in the comment above, I was saying it SHOULD be better in terms of build quality for the price, but we will only know from both fronts once they have seen a few years of work! But Behringer doesn't deserve the bad rap it once had. Times have moved on a lot for that company, and its acquisitions have only strengthened it considerably.
I have the dzr10 now for 1 day. Everywhere i read they say it very clear sounding. My experience is its sounding muffled. Its like a blanked is over it. Am i doing something something wrong. I have connected it just a shure beta 58a mic. Why is it sounding so dull.
Are you plugging the microphone directly in? The inputs are line level so that doesn't work. If you are using a desk then my guess is that the compression driver isn't working! These are really clear, articulate speakers so it shouldn't sound muffled!
Thank you Gary for your quick reply. Yes im plugin in the mic directly. I wil try it soon with a decent mic pre amp. Hope this will improve the sound quality.
No worries! You may be able to change the input to the mic level, but ideally, you should plug it into a desk before the speaker. Alternatively, you could try testing it with an Aux to dual mono cable and plugging it into a laptop or phone. I would probably test it soon so you can return it if needed!
8 hours of battery life is a huge benefit for this mixer, and people doing outdoor/mobile gigs would benefit most from this
Yes, but the zoom can run off of a battery power bank which is far more flexible and most likely costs less to replace than the Mackie power bank! Plus you can afford to have more than one as backup and still be cheaper than the Mackie.
I have had a A&H SQ5 and a QU-SB with 2x DT168 and one AR2412 stage boxes for about two years. I have been waiting for the last two years for A&H to bring out some sort of SQ Rack mixer. I will defiantly sell my QU-SB and get the new SQ Rack probably in the next 4 months. But I must say the Wing Rack looks great mixer especially for people already in the Behringer/Midas x32/M/32 family’s I had an x32 Rack mixer for about 8 years and it was a great mixer.
Yeah, like I said, I think its pretty perfect for those already in the system! And I'm sure it will be a great mixer too! Sounds like it will fit in super well with your other mixers too! The Wing has a huge amount going for it, especially for those with tighter budgets and it feels like a big step up from the x series!
100% agree with your comments above.
Thanks for stopping by and watching! 🙂
Thanks for reading out the specs to us. However, the real pros and cons is what hit you when you actually use such a system. So this video could have been a visit to A&H's web page.
Thanks for watching! This is mainly my gut feeling after looking at the specs and wondering if I would get one of these. As I'm sure you are aware, it has only just hit the market, so time will tell how it fairs in the real world! So maybe I'll change my mind if I revisit this! When I can get my hands on one, that is!
96 khz... ? This would do it for me
Yeah, you're not wrong! Double the sample rate is astonishing, but you would have to run an equally impressive rig to get the most out of this. Unless bands have invested similarly, the difference will be negligible over most of the PAs they commonly run.
To my understanding, the SQ series always runs its processing at 96khz internally. Stageboxes of the old series using the DSnake protocol however only have 48khz converters. The internal recorder can be switched to 16 channels at 96khz, or 32 channels at 48khz. With the big expensive Dante expansion card, you can transmit 64 channels of 96khz to any 96khz-enabled Dante destination.
@@nielsott I belive there are dedicated 96khz stage boxes available ... (dante)
I have the QU Pac and have been a big fan of the SQ (using and installing a few SQ models. The fact that you have to purchase all of the Deep Plugins on top of the mixer cost really ruin it for me. Along with that, the expansion boxes cost at least twice as much as Behringer Wing boxes. I don’t think I would choose the SQ Rack with the current price point and features.
Yeah, I think I'm in the same position! I love the mixer, but it's a pretty hard sell at that price point, especially with the Wing sitting at not far off half that price.
Well, the SQ Rack contains a full SQ low latency platform engine including full IO (as opposed to the CQ boxes, which have almost no extendability), it's like an SQ5 minus the faders and most rotaries. Therefore I see that it can't be sold for just half the price, still a good price IMO, definitely interesting to me. Also because I already own some A&H gear (from analog Zed and GL2800, to digital QU and SQ desks), I tend to not go astray ;-)
Oh yeah, I do not doubt this sounds better than the Behringer Wing! And if you already have Allen & Heath gear, it's a no-brainer! And if this was £1700 and the Wing £1200, I would grab the A&H without a thought! Like you, I am a big A&H fan, having grown up with them everywhere, but their move to production in China was a bit of a downer!
I was looking at at the Alto TS415. Do you have anything to say about these ones. And the Yamaha DBR12, does it have a good bass projection. Im looking for a speaker that can sound good outdoors. Not necessarily a big crowd.
You'll get more low-end out of the 15” speaker for sure! But the DBR will be a much more reliable and better sounding speaker in my opinion! The DBR15 isn't a huge amount more if you can stretch to that but the DBR12 will do you forever!
@@GaryOnBass So ALTOs arent as reliable? Ive been looking at many reviews and they all say they are good speakers and the TS415 come for the same price as DBR12. Im really struggling to make a decision.
They can be, and that's kind of the problem! The quality control is a little too all over the place, which was fine when they were very cheap, but you can now get tried-and-true brands for the same money! So that would always be my pick, and that's why Alto didn't make my list! I hope that helps!
@@GaryOnBass That last comment definitely helped. Cheers!
@Sickoffence No Worries! Thanks for watching! 🙂
250£ are NOT cheap, that's always been the starting price for years. Each video on the internet has a Co2 emission and useless videos like this pollute the internet and the environment.
I would say that £250 is very cheap for a moulded set of IEMs compared to everything else on the market, and they are surprisingly good for that price! Weather they have been that price for a day or 20 years that doesn't really matter!
@GaryOnBass You think people don't know they already exist? Of course they do! Your content is copy-paste from videos already covered thousands of times. If your goal is to pollute the internet and the environment you're doing an amazing job but in terms of helping people with new solutions you're doing the worst job ever!
Would use this for an acoustic show. If it’s a single or duo, you can put this up in a table beside them and they can reach over and turn the knobs without having to go through menus. Or if it’s a radical political meeting where they are doing a speaker on a stick thing where they are screaming about the thing they are angry about.
Haha, I may skip the meeting! I think my argument is that it is just an update of the Mackie ProFX10 and is a little overpriced! It has its uses, but for any of those use cases, I would point someone towards the Zoom L-8 and save them a good whack of cash in the process!
Great video! Just getting started gigging again. I’m going to step up the show with some lights. Any recommendations on foot pedals?
Do you mean foot controllers for lighting? I've only really used the Chauvet foot controllers before but the Eurolite DMX Big Foot looks like an interesting and full featured option for not a huge amount of money!
What do you think of the SQ Rack? Is it worth double the price of the Wing Rack? Let me know below!
I really like to work with A&H desks because of the worklflow and the customization to my needs. I used my GLDs for my band jobs the last 12 years. But I'm sorry to bring it to you. The A&H desks (apart from RUFX) have the worst sounding reverbs from all brands I worked with, even the Yamaha LS9. The reverbs are still the ringing, metallic sounding ones from the Ilive from 2005. That's the reason I bought a M-Waves card to use external reverb plugins. BTW, you forgot to mention that you have to buy the deep pack when you want to be on par with the wing. Otherwise you don't have the 160, 1176, multiband compressor, dynamic eq etc. I don't know where you get the SQ Rack for 1700£ when it's listed for 2050£ (best price, otherwise 3000$). If you add the deep pack, then it's more or less 2700£. I wouldn't hesitate because of the production in China. Almost every digital desk from every brand is designed in Europe (mostly UK) or the US but produced in China. A&H is no exception.
@MrYuppiedu thanks for watching! I know everything is now made in China, but A&H were always made down the road from me growing up so its a real shame for me personally! Does it effect build quality? Probably not so much, but it really effected my local music community! They are £2k here, I was saying it would be more competitive at £1700. The deep effects are such an expensive addition, and I did miss that! Its a really good point as you can buy a second Wing for the price of the dpack plugins! Which is madness!
@@GaryOnBass I can understand your disappointment that a long-standing company from your neighborhood is moving production to China. At least the same people are still behind the design. I was actually always hoping for a mkII version of the GLD, because apart from 96kHz there are too many compromises with the SQ for me (especially at the price with the Deep Pack). And the Avantis and the DLive are unfortunately out of my budget. So I'm still looking for a successor for my beloved GLD, which is unfortunately slowly dying. I actually want to stay at A&H especially because of the workflow and the quick start from scratch for individual shows. I'm pretty sure that if A&H had released the SQ Rack at the current price with the other SQ models it would have been a success and become the top dog. But now they have come into the game a little late and have a direct competitor in terms of price and features with the wing rack.
@@GaryOnBass But at least we still have the QU-SB in our band rack for a while🙂
Yeah, to be fair, I always loved the QU Pac, and the SB is great, too! As I said in the video, if the price were slightly more competitive (£500-1000 less), people wouldn't even look at the Wing. But when you're talking about double the price, it's hard to justify that price difference unless you're a full-time engineer! This is unfortunate because I always felt the QU range was achievable for everyone! But lots of my engineer friends run the SQ so there's obviously still a place for it and I think the SQ-Rack will be no different in that regard!
Have you got a use for this? Would you take it over the Zoom? Let me know below!
Totalmente de acuerdo contigo
Two days ago, i went to guitar center thinking of buying the bose l1 pro 8 or pro 16. I saw this and ask the guitar center employee how much the QSC kc12 cost since no price tag. The employee and i found out that it just drop two days ago. Let me tell you, this QSC can get loud. Like extremely loud to the point that I was about to leave the live sound room. Everything was at 12 o clock and i only play music a quarter volume on my phone. The employee and I said the sound is so crystal clear. It sounds so much better than l1 pro 16. It reminds me of my car speaker focal kx3 6.5. You really need to hear it in person to experience it. Today, I went to guitar center and bought the QSC kc12 for $1,599 USD which is the same price as ld maui 28 g3.
Its great to hear from someone who has been able to listen to it! The price seems a lot more competitive over in the states too! I dont necessarily think this will be a bad speaker for playback/DJs I just dont think its ideal for bands! But I’ll happily be proven wrong with this as its great to see new innovation in this market!
@@GaryOnBassThere's nothing new or innovative here. Just another column array with the QSC brand stamped on the front. The marketing department realizes if they make it, people will buy it. If your current system ain't broke, leave it alone!
@kellyaustin7487 I think there is probably something to this…
I am using the JBL one with my band with mixed results, the two 4" drivers is a concern for sure. I would prefer the wood/aluminum design with a fan and it is spec'ed at more output 130db vs 132db. Also the QSC is not plastic all around like you stated.
Yeah I overlooked that, the sub seems like it is a hybrid construction. I'm still not a massive fan of the ABS on top of the sub and top unit. I'm sure it is well made though, I know the RCF J8 is still solid and that's all ABS! The fan could definitely be an advantage in hot climates! But its just not an ideal speaker setup for me and I wouldn't hold much weight to SPL ratings from many manufacturers! Its vary easy to bend the truth with those readings!
I have HK Polar 12 speakers, and in my opinion, they have a lot of bass. They’re great for DJs, but with some filters on the mixer, everything works perfectly even the microphones. For more power, I recently got the Ingenia IG4T Vertical Array from dB Technologies, and I’m very happy with the results for live bands. I pair them with FBT Subline 18 subwoofers, and the system works perfectly. Usually I do corporate events.
That sounds like a great pair of systems for different size events! I have heard great things about the IG4T too! One of my friend has them with the matching DB Subs and he loves them!
I'm tossing between this and the RCF J8 for my trio, that all run through the PA (Mostly DI) with IEM's, which would you recommend?
I'd pick this, if it were between the EVOX8 it may have been a harder choice though! I think the “sub” is less boomy and tighter on the ES802/503 which really helps with definition when they are taking so much of the frequency range!
Ld Maui for band 💯
Is that what you use? I have had pretty bad experience with the LD Columns with bands, they lack separation for me!
Yes, use it and love it. I own maui28g3 and maui44g2. Both perfect for band and separation what issues do you have? I have done many many gigs and some large crowds zero issues
Interesting! I have only ever used the older models and always found it difficult to hear the individual instruments in the mix compared to my point source systems! Maybe its time to try the Maui again! I quite liked the look of the curve TS when that came out too!
I use LD and agree. Band perfect sound and plenty of juice and separation
actually disapointed i thought they would come out with a newer version of the k12.2 yes there still great but come one QSC
I think they really need to do something about the harshness at high SPL because the k12.2 would be solid without that!
Another helpful video, thanks! How did you find the kick drum through this PA? I'm assuming you used two of these in a band (can't remember if you mentioned it in the video). I was quite impressed with the bass and kick in my mate's band, where they have two RCF 712s (I think) and one H&H 15" sub. Despite being quite cheap, the sub definitely added some heft to the band's sound, making it something I want in my band's live sound.
Thanks for watching! The kick is really tight and can be heard, but I don't think you get that “feeling” of kick if you know what I mean! I think you really need a 15” or 18” speaker to get that! But I very rarely feel like the bass is too overwhelming out of these speakers, which I have had in some tight spaces with traditional subs! I would use these in any venue I wouldn't want to take a sub into, and they beat most point source speakers in terms of overall breadth of sound! But even though I have multiple PA systems, I still think these would cover the majority of gigs, and they represent great value for money!
@GaryOnBass Sweet! Thanks for the comprehensive reply 🙏 Subbed 🙌
@SpiralDogs No Worries! Glad to help! Thanks for the sub! 🙂
Useful information, thanks! You mentioned in another comment that you've used the Db Technologies ES802 column array speakers with your band. How did you find it? I've been considering those speakers (or similar) as they would be easier to fit in my car along with my guitar gear. The general consensus is to use point source speakers over column array. Otherwise, I'd be looking to get an RCF sub in conjunction with my RCF 710 tops. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
I've got a video on my channel about my experience with the ES802 for full details! Generally, there's not as much presence/mids, but it's got a great homogenous sound. They sound great in specific spaces, but the point source is far more flexible! It depends on how you're going to use it and in what kind of spaces you're performing in! If space is an issue, they are a great option!
@@GaryOnBass Thanks mate. That's useful to know. I'm looking to upgrade my set up for my cover band project, which is mainly pubs and with a drummer who is used to playing rock festivals and arenas. I still feel two tops and a sub may still be the best way. But I'll definitely check out your other video. Cheers 👍
@SpiralDogs no worries! I think for Pubs (especially smaller ones) they are a great shout! You'll get louder with point source but I doubt you'll need it! My drummer has an acrylic kit (which is loud) and it doesn't struggle! Guitar can get a little lost if not mixed properly though!
EVOX12 is $3000.00USD each in the US
I just made a straight conversion as we can't see American prices but that does make them less viable! How much is the FBT Ventis system over there?
The Americans will love the QSC like the Evolve 50. Here in the UK we have much more sense. I’m looking at the Ventis the 2500 (15” sub 2006 top) or 3000 (15” + 10” tops) in white ( wedding DJ) OR the new rcf 905 / 114a in white. Although I can get the Ventis 3000 with case for 4K new and will wipe the floor with these QSC. You sound like me to be honest. Sensible and not fooled by hype. Also the QSC’s have fans in their subs….in 2025 wtf. lol. Heat sinks, not fans that break and get clogged up.🙌🏽
@ifonlyhowie Thanks for watching! I guess the fans make sense for hotter countries. I have had speakers with heat sinks overheat when left by bales (country event) or next to a heater (which was on in the summer for some reason!), so I get it. But as you say, it's also a weak point for water and dust! I don't think these towers are the one, but I understand why QSC made them! I think FBT/RCF have the small PA market cornered!
Defo. Guess there’s also the price. Seems the US get shafted in import with European goods same as we do with VAT on US products coming this way so they’ll pay more for FBT / RCF than we probably do. Great content btw 💪🏼
@DjCraighowarth Thank You! Glad you enjoyed it! It does seem that the skew is quite different in the States! I think if the QSC was hitting that £1000-1500 mark in the UK, it would be more competitive with the Evolve. I'm sure that will happen with time, though!
A KC15 with 15"sub and a top with 2x 6"mids+ high freq driver could be a strong player in the "column-array" segment, and actually just as good as RCF NXL 14a + 15" ax sub. Evox12 is old and missing a high driver. I´m old school and stay with my (RCF) tops and subs, but as you mention the FBT Ventis 206 looks like a way better deal than the new NXL 14A from RCF. Btw I hate that RCF started talking about "peak power 2100 watts" and dont specify their freq range, so probably its at -10dB😒 god damn! just give me the real RMS wattage, max dB at 1 meter, a frequency curve and freq range at -3dB or -6dB
Haha, I agree with so much here, especially with how they measure everything! I think you're right that a KC15 to that spec would be a strong contender, but if the current pricing is anything to go by, then it would be way more than the FBT with a good 15” sub under it. I think I know which I would pick from those two options!
@@GaryOnBass If you want that white and column array wedding-DJ look..... then you must pay extra for the look😂I can live with black speakers, and love the versatility of tops+subs, I can do 2.1 setup, 2.2, 2.0 or even go out and rent 2 more subs and do 2.4 if it should be really bass-heavy. I can raise/lower/tilt the tops as I like. With column arrays you are "locked" to 1 or 2 speaker setup and thats that. So for now I stay away from column-arrays, but no one knows what the future bring, so I would never say never 🤣
@J-DJ there are massive pluses to point source, which is why it's my go to, but I have had great experience with column systems, too! You just have to be realistic that there are compromises with everything! The dispersion for column arrays is excellent, and they work so well in overly reverberant or small tight spaces without sounding too much, for example, but you're not going to be playing to large groups outside with them! They all have their uses, or that's what I tell myself when I buy another PA/Guitar/Bass 😂
@@GaryOnBass Yep its important to be able to justify every gear purchase 🤣 The wide dispersion is a plus. I was just watching your HK Premium Pro video, I had "Hughes & Kettner 15/3" cabinets way back. HK is not the hottest name in column-arrays even though you get their Polar 12 with 12" sub, 6x 3" mid and 1" high CD horn for half the price of the new QSC KC12. I have never heard the Polar12 but i doubt it is only half as good as the QSC.
@J-DJ it’s always important to justify a purchase in some way! Haha, the Polar 12 is actually a great comparison! I didn't think of that one at the moment! They are really good-sounding speakers for plastic boxes! The HK Elements are actually the best middle ground between Column and Point Source, too! You can expand the system and choose different sub combinations from case to case! Their only letdown is that it was a pricey system to get into! But solid wood and steel construction and the joining method is really robust and simple! I think they should have probably had a loss leader starter set that would have gotten more people picking them up!
Will it work for DJ? ??
Most likely it will sound great! But my gut instinct is that any of the other systems I mentioned will be as good or better for less money!
Unfortunately the evox 12 cost 3k 😢😢😢
@zukaDJ these are £2k EACH! £4k for a pair! That's £500 more than a pair of EVOX12 here!
Bro , evox 12 cost 3k each , So 2 will cost 6 k ,
Oooosh that is painful! What about the DB Technologies ES1002 or ES1203? I feel like the QSC will be fairly close to the EV Evolve or RCF J8, I think a FBT CS1000 would beat all three of those though!
How do you think these hold up? Would you use them?
If you ever wanna sell one of yoursubs I'm in the market for another one!
Me too! I have a Pair of EV 18" subs I need to move on soon!
I don’t think them dsps are actually rebranded Behringer. I think they’re made by an oem in china and rebranded by both companies, as the thomann ones came out a couple years before the Behringer
Oh, really? I thought they were the Behringer DR112DSP, but now you've said it, the power amp module does look a bit different! They're singing from the same hymn sheet regarding cab design, though! I just checked out your channel, and I remember seeing one of your videos a few years back about The Box speakers being made by another Chinese manufacturer. It wouldn't surprise me if they made the injection mould cases for Behringer! Similarly, I know Mackie had some relation to RCF for the SRM series! Great spot, though!
Them subzero tops have peizo tweeters too, so they’ll sound horrendous, we have the thomann versions of them Behringer dsp tops. They’re actually very good when we used to put on our own gigs we used them on their own and they performed very well. Loud enough to handle a metal band nicely anyway. Been quite reliable too we had an amp blow up at the first gig but thomann just sent us an entire new speaker
Yeah, I did clock that! Piezo have their place, but few and far between and probably not in these speakers! Haha That's the big bonus of buying new when you haven't got a huge amount of cash-you're covered for a bit! Thomann is great for that, too! Behringer isn't all bad now, and since the acquisition of Turbo Sound, I think they have put a bit more thought into their designs, too! They still probably won't hold up to more expensive options in terms of sound and volume, but no one should expect that, really!
@@GaryOnBass that’s true I’ve got a lot of Behringer gear and it’s all very decent. Especially the turbosound stuff, I know a few venues using the iq series speakers very reliably and I know they get thrashed but keep going and sound great
Yeah, for sure! They aren't anything like Turbosound, but they are arguably much more usable! I have a friend who runs a large IQ rig, and he has had little to no issues with any of it, and it is definitely LOUD! But you shouldn't expect less from three 15" tops and eight 18" subs! Haha
I would never go down the budget speaker route - I would look for good second hand gear and build up a system progressively. A pair of £1000 Yamaha dxr15’s will sound better and have more punch than any budget speakers and will hold their value if you want to trade up in the future. Buy once-cry once is the way to go. Cheap speakers just take up space without the reward.
I totally agree with this! Although buying new affords a warranty which is always useful! I think you would have to search hard to get something decent for £175 a speaker, even second hand! And everyone needs to start somewhere! So I totally get why people consider these. But I wouldn't go for the subzero even if I could get a sub! I think a pair of DBR15s would do most better and get the sub when you have money to upgrade later! It was interesting to see how much money you end up spending though! Even specing out a set of speakers which are considered “cheap”!
Which of the two setups would you pick? And whats your opinion on carpeted speakers? Let me know below!
I absolutely love my DZR12s and haven't had a single issue with them yet. They sound so nice and punch well above their weight. Especially paired with the DXS 15s
Yeah, I totally agree! The DXR10s are crazy-sounding speakers for their size and price! However, I have had three lower woofers break now.
Is the Hk Audio Pro series sound really better than the RCF Art 9 series?
For a band, I think so! The RCF is still a great speaker though, and has a hifi like quality for playback! The MDF case on the HK Audio really helps the low end if you’re not using subs.
Will two es 803 be sufficient for a small band with vocals, acoustic guitar, bass and drums where we have a microphone on the kick for private parties 50-100 people?
Yeah, easily! I have run these outdoors to 150 people with kick, vocals, backing tracks, guitar and bass with no backline and it was more than enough! Not extremely loud though! In doors and less than 100 people then I can't see it being an issue ever!
Hi gary, if u were to buy a 12 in h tops and 15 inch sub now with all the experience u have with the different brands (not looking at thise super expensive pro level concert rigs) which would u get? Asuming size and weight is not a factor but sticking to the 12 toos 15 bottoms powered speakers and sub. Both quality of sound and reliability for many years as a primary consideration which would u pick today 🙂
I think if weight wasn't an issue then I would most likely go for the HK Linear 5 range! They are great speakers, super reliable and sound great! The weight puts me off of them but I think that would be my number 1 choice in terms of sound quality and reliability! I think the DZRs are very close but I have had reliability issues with the drivers!
@ many thanks gary! Really appreciate it! HK Linear 5 12FA now in my cart 😅 Happy New year!
You really can't go wrong there! Happy new year to you too! 🙂
Thank you for that video. I was looking at the Allen & Heath CQ-18T which I had the chance to use on one gig. I was impressed by the amount of inputs (although I wish they implemented 16 combo-XLR-Jacks, instead of 8 XLR and 8 comb o-XLR/jack). I currently play in 3 formations (3 members, 4 members and 10 members) and I think the Allen & Heath CQ-18T would work nicely. However, I had a look at the Behringer Wing Rack which is only slightly more expensive but seems to be in another league compared to the CQ-18T. It looks a bit more daunting though and I rather play music than figuring out how everything works but I'm wondering if I'm missing out if I go for the CQ-18T? What's your opinion on this?
I think the CQ-18T is extremely intuitive to use, so if you want an easy system to control and just focus on playing then that is why I would go for. The lack of jack inputs really shouldn't be an issue, it's mostly for keys and auxiliary devices. However, it only has 6 auxes which may be a real problem with a 10 piece band. I have used a Wing before, not the rack version but I have owned an MR18. I imagine it will be fairly similar to control but with the better wing app. You will get used to using this and work your way around it, it will take some learning but I think you will probably thank yourself on the larger band gigs where you dont need to share auxs! You will however need to expand the wing to get those extra aux outs which will make it quite a cost quite a bit more! If the aux number isn't an issue I would still go with the Allen and Heath, providing it works for your applications! The CQ-20T does have more combo inputs and aux putputsif you prefer their app for mixing!
