This is my Squier by Fender Debut Stratocaster that I will be giving away on the channel. But before that we really needed to drill some tone holes into it because as you know tone holes are where true tone comes from. The real ones know. 🤝
You might be asking yourself, "should I drill tone holes in MY guitar?" The answer is a resounding "yes." Especially if it's a vintage Strat like this one. It also works really well on vintage Gibson Les Pauls. I've never tried it on a vintage Martin, but those already have a tone hole. More is better, though, so it's probably a good idea.
One thing to keep in mind when drilling tone holes is you should wear protective gear. This type of guitar mod is super advanced and requires the utmost care, precision, and safety. I am not responsible for you or your gear. If you don't feel comfortable then take your guitar to your nearest luthier and say "I NEED THEM TONE HOLES ASAP!" This type of upgrade usually costs less than $150 and it's well worth ten times that.

  • @HearGear
    @HearGear 3 дні тому

    It might not sound as good when plugging it in to a 100 Watt Marshall with a 4x12, thats what happened to a buddy of mine, he swapped for something similar to this pickup because it sounded good in he's little setup he had at home, when on a mini tour playing gigs on stages using what amps and cabs already on the stage, in this case a 100 watt ENGL and a couple of 4x12 cabs, at the soundcheck 3-4 hours before the show he realises that holy sh*t, I can't use these pickups because they sound like shit and feedback so badly that not even the in house soundtech-guy could do anything about it. He took he's two guitars he'd swapped for these cheap pickups and brought them to the closest guitarstore and in a rush asked them to put in a set of EMG´s in each guitar, 500 dollars later he did the soundcheck everything worked out great and the cheap pickups he threw in the bin at the store, they did cost around 25 Euro each. So the conclusion is that it's not really a great way to test a pickup using smal simple homeriggs with maybe a little 10 watt combo or through a pedalboard and the studio monitors or computer speakers. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you are happy with what you bought.

    • @ArtOfShredYT
      @ArtOfShredYT 3 дні тому

      You're not wrong! But the issue is likely the wax potting or he didn't ground them correctly. You can hear these types of issues in small rigs as well as big rigs. For example: in this video I mention that this pickup came with the bare wire tied to the green instead of the black. Installed like that in this guitar it would have tons of noise issues.

    • @HearGear
      @HearGear 3 дні тому

      @@ArtOfShredYT Yeah but he knows about grounding and stuff like that, its more like a WAX problem and that's the common problem in many pickups, I mean yeah I might have worked back in the 50´s and 60´s but in those modern days with hard rock and metal, nah not so much. I said a could have wax potted them for him but that was several days after the show and he already threw them away. He was more like: Nah dont put any time in to junk like this. So he went my route and put EMG`s in all he's guitars or the ones he uses on stage, 5-6 of them. I have EMG´s in at least 7-8 guitars. Not only the 81 model i really like the 57/66 set because it's not as high output and works great for rock and hard rock as well, and cleans. Ohh and well.. I have a couple of Jim Root guitars and one with one Blackout in it.. I dont like it as much as the EMG though.

    • @ArtOfShredYT
      @ArtOfShredYT 3 дні тому

      @@HearGear Lots of budget pickups are properly wax potted. Not all of them, of course. Anyway, no hate to any of the big brands and if you're a touring musician it makes sense to go with them. The vast majority of guitarists do not play live and these are a great budget option.

    • @HearGear
      @HearGear 3 дні тому

      @@ArtOfShredYT Yeah you just can't be sure until you got them in your hands, I have a dirt cheap guitar with a very different body shape that I bought almost 20 years ago for around 150 Euros, it has two passive pickups in it and the bridge pickup is totally awesome, it sounds fantastic with my big live rig, Marshalls and 4x12 cabs, it has a bite to it that I can not really describe, i am going to have to take it out of the guitar and investigate what gauge copper wire it uses and do some serious measuring to see if its possible to make a copy of it. You know 4-5 more or less winds on the coil and it's going to sound different. It going to be a nightmare to trying to figure it out. I Would imagine those pickups are really really cheap ones.

And for the price, definitely a no brainer for me. I also recently installed some musiclily dual hot rail pups - they were microphonic, and not waxed as advertised. I don't know if you've had a chance to try them but he old Mighty Mights from the 70s were great. They were often mistaken for Super Distortions because they looked very similar, but they were actually designed by Seymour Duncan. They sound fantastic. They say Eddie used one but replaced the alnico 5 with an alnico 2. Then again, Larry DiMarzio says Eddie used a Super Distortion.

    I've tried to sample every type of pickup that I can... the Seymour Duncan JB is hands down my favorite. Honorable mention to Dawgtown Custom PAFs, Lollartrons, and the Gibson Black Magic pickups. That being said, I ordered the $17 bridge pickup to throw in my Hard Rock Cafe strat.

    Have to be honest. I cannot tell the difference between almost any pickups on my laptop or TV monitor. Unless a pickup is screeching or breaking up I simply can't hear a difference. In person is completely different. But I've almost give up listening to sound demos on either the computer or TV unless it's just to hear how well someone plays.

    I recommend the double rail humbucker from Fleor, I believe it's even a bit less harsh and cheap sounding. That said, I had a few Fleor pickups here and there. Would I prefer to record on a Seymour Duncan? Yes, no doubt. But these I actually often prefer to Duncan Designed (SD's official oem import pickups) and at the cost of a take away lunch nowadays those are really a great option to upgrade a guitar with meh stock pickups.

      Nice, thanks for that suggestion! Although I do love this FLEOR for what it is, I don't really think it's better than the JB (which I only chose for the headline because it's a popular classic). Unfortunately headlines like this are required now or people don't click on videos. 🤘 Thanks again!

I've actually got about three guitars on a mod I just get the parts and then I never take the time to do it. It's got that raspy 80s sound do it now sounds good that looks great with a white pickup in the back you're right about the everything kind of just Blends in
