- Oh hey I'd never used these cheap files (emery boards) for this type of thing before and I probably should have done it first off camera instead of experimenting on camera, but it worked WONDERFULLY anyway!

A note regarding "fret sprout" vs "sharp frets" vs "fret burrs":
I've taken to calling any fret burrs or sharp frets & actual fret sprout (fret wire sticking out of the fingerboard) all the same thing because I've become annoyed with saying sharp frets and/or fret sprout together constantly. I forget this is the internet and there will always be pedantic commenters who are gonna whine about that. Know that I know the difference, but know that it doesn't really matter.
In any case, what both of the Harley Bentons I recently bought had was fret sprout (frets sticking out slightly at the edge of the fretboard, specifically at the upper curved edge) and some slightly sharp frets where they weren't dressed well. Once you've said these words on camera 100s of times you start to annoy yourself -- at least I do -- so I've mostly just called it fret sprout lately. In the past year I've fixed sprouted & sharp frets on ~100 guitars (my own and others') and I promise nobody cares what you call it as long as the work is done well.
This feels very reminiscent of the people who care whether you call a coil split a coil tap or vice versa. Yes they're different, but does anyone who matters really care what you call it? No.
Thanks for watching! 🤘

I use cheap drug store nail files too for some fret touchups. Not ashamed to admit it. It works. The fret does not care if the file came from StewMac or Walgreen's.
True that! I do like the FretGuru file a lot better because it's easier to use and will last for years but nothing wrong with these cheap files
I got an inexpensive set of diamond files from Amazon on a Black Friday sale, they were about £10 they’re great because I can use them for Nut work as well, but for fine finishing I also use fine nail boards, works for me!
Nice, that's a good deal for diamond files 🤘
Those softback type polishing sticks work great for polishing frets too just be sure to us a fret guard.or tape the fretboard.
Yup! They worked nicely
Thanks for sharing, bro. I love a good budget solution. Oh, and I am now going to call all my mistakes relic'ing (smile). I have never tried the emery boards. I usually use the Fret-guru tool you held up a few times. Rock on!
Thanks for watching! The FretGuru file is great :)
As for the relicing: In the words of Laura Kampf (woodworking/designer/maker UA-camr): "Every defect gets respect"
@@ArtOfShredYT You bet. I dig the channel. The FG file is my go to. Love the quote. Thanks for sharing that with me.
Seeing as how the weather has been insane here lately, a few of mine have developed some sprout and I have never really done fret work...😅 Nice tips here, I will definitely be getting some stuff to do it myself!
Sweet! It's so easy on nickel frets! Stainless are a little more difficult since it's a harder metal but I imagine even these emery boards would work with them as well.
That's awesome Brother I hadn't thought about it😎
I've used a nail file to shave down saddle burrs before so I figured they've gotta work for nickel frets too :)
Nice tutorial Karol. Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🤘
Nice work, Karol! Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Thank you! 🤘
I have files but gotta try that way thanks
Sweet, let me know how it goes for you! 🤘
@@ArtOfShredYT will do been binge watching to catch up lol
I've got the fret guards but can never get the fret dressing file; L & M and Music Pro never never never have it in stock! So my fret ends remain sharp. I guess if those dollar store emery boards don't shed grit, I'll give them a try.
The emery boards won't last as long as a fret dressing file but they'll get the job done. You can also buy from fretguru.com but I'm not sure if they ship worldwide. They also sell on Amazon, of course.
@@ArtOfShredYT I try not to give Amazon my business, but often fail as my kids get involved and, voila, things are ordered through Amazon. lol! Maybe I'll get the real thing for mother's day.
I used the wife's emery boards on my acoustic, and while it was a bit awkward, but seemed to work ok.
PS I used the wife's emery boards, because I don't have any 😂
Haha! I like to use them on my fragile nails but I never had a set like this with lots of different grits
I have a cheap set of micro files I used on a Fender ukulele. Did the job in a short period of time and the files cost $4.48. I assume they will work just as well on a guitar.
good video thanks with great advice, just off to rumage in the wifes drawers 😮
Hahaha
