just a short video, these are some large Yew timber slices i was given. quite wet so I need to let them dry out. step one is to cut them in half, step two is to seal them. I use exterior PVA glue to seal them. works great and is much cheaper then your average end grain sealant

      @limpet9 no, just the extra length with cutting, when I first got this, it was exactly what I need but very shortly after I had a few commissions that needed to be able to do deeper cuts. Still a good machine though, I've not had any issues and it's still going strong

    Just wanted to say thank u. Lost my 19 year old daughter 3 years ago. I am a carpenter and i finally want to make some Angel wings. I absolutely love these. Beautiful. May i ask where u retrieved your template from? Again thank u for sharing and for the inspiration.

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker 2 місяці тому

      @jenniferleigh-ws5xq firstly, let me say how sorry I am for your loss, as a fellow parent, I grieve with you. After that, thank you for your.kind comment, these are pretty straight forwards to make and as for the design, I simply googled angel wing template, there are hundreds of images online. I found one that I liked and this pattern seems very common, downloaded the image, enlarged amd printed it and traced it straight onto the wood. Ideally you want a image that is of a relatively high quality to be able to enlarge and with a detail level that your happy to work with. Also, I would perhaps practice on a few pieces of scrap first before trying on anything special. Besides that, be patient and it will come out great. If.you have any more questions, don't hesitate to get in touch

      @jenniferleigh-ws5xq 2 місяці тому

      @JohnathonWhittaker Well thank u kind sir. I went and rounded me up a template and I'm transferring my image as we speak on some scrap pieces to try first. So odd. When I started transferring something told me to check for a reply. And I am so glad I did. I have been steady repeating to myself to just have patience. This is going to be a very cool healing experience for me. Thank u again for your wisdom. May God Bless you and your family.. 🕊💞🕊

    Why have the smaller shank? #newbie

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker 4 місяці тому

      The 1/8th shank router bits are great, sharp, durable and very cheap. They are great for detail work and for carving curves which can be quite tricky with larger router bits. Like with all.new equipment though, there is a learning curve. With heavier router bits, it's quite easy to force them through the wood, with the smaller bits, you need to let the bit do thr cutting or it will snap. They don't fly off anywhere, just drop down so are safe. Hope that answers your question

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker 4 місяці тому

      @chucksimpson5160 hi there and thanks for the complement. Trays like this are relatively straightforward and easy to do if you have the right tools. If I was doing it all with hand tools barring sanding, probably eight hours. Using a router or angle grinder, maybe two hours? Add in a day for the finish to dry. But I could potentially do 4 or more in a day and same amount of time for drying. Hope that answers your question

    Very awesome!!! Most of the fruit timber have really beautiful texture, but all my fruit wood (including cherry) have bunch of cracks ((((( Cherry is one of the worst about cracks. So far I only managed to get some walnut dried out completely without cracks.

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker 4 місяці тому

      @Dmitriy-SDI fruit timber is also my favorite and it definitely can crack! I found a few ways to reduce this, first I seal both ends of the log and let it season for at least two years. When I start to carve either cherry or apple timber, I either put it in a plastic bag when I'm not carving it or spray a cheap varnish on it to reduce the moisture loss which causes cracking. Unfortunately, this doesn't work 100% of the time but it does help alot. My least.favorite is oak, that keeps cracking and twisting for around 100 years in a unsealed form

    Something wrong with using a CNC router? You are using a printer to print it out, why not do the same on a CNC program and hit start directly onto the wood

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker 11 місяців тому

      This Is more for people who want a more hands on experience and potentially can't afford an expensive cnc set up. I find this method to be very versatile, doesn't take up much room and can achieve much better results than alot of the lower cost cncs. As for printing, that's just easier for me to layout and design something immediately for clients, there are quite a few people who do the text free hand with excellent results. Different ways for different people. I often just use a mallet and gouges, also gives me the result I want although I still print it🙂

      Still using them, cleaning them out is massively important, I am not a believer in using flame to get rid of clogging, I feel that would either immediately or eventually compromise the metal. I just use a wire brush, sometimes soak them in either diesel or cellulose thinners and they are practically brand new. The only thing that inhabe replaced is therenisna small rubber washer between the head and the spindle that eventually goes but they cost next to nothing and very easily replaceable
