the drill press is perfect for this type of thing where you need two hands to hold your work. you can even make long attachments to reach tricky spots. one recommendation though is to have the drill press at its lowest setting so it doesnt burn the wood
I got hooked on the most awesome and breathtakingly stunning woodturning work I have ever seen. Now I came across this video on UA-cam and I am hooked, the work and methods all of you do is stunning and magnificent. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Great to see an alternative way of making these. I've been doing the segmented versions and have been toying with the idea of going a different route. This was very inspirational. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you colour these. I'd like to get that effect on other wood projects that I make.
Thanks for the great comments, should have the next video up this weekend. I am going to keep experimenting with this theme. The next project is going to be a challenge!
your channel really inspires me a lot. Thanks for that . I think i try to make my own nautilus shell a little bigger for my pond. The other variant on the band saw is mostly to smalll so your method is perfect to carve a bigger size
Thanks for the great comment! This was fun project and you should be able to scale it up as big as you want! I had a request for a much larger one and i think I will use a chainsaw for the rough shape but then shape it just like I did this one. When you carve yours, I would love to see the finished result! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for that! These are alot of fun to carve! I have a new one coming out about carving a conch shell from a single block of wood. Thanks for watching and i hope you.like the future videos!
Hey Johnathan! Late to the party. Been dealing with the Polar vortex here in North Pole South ( MN) Have not had much free time as equipment is breaking down. Did not prepare this year as I often do. My truck plow quit. My snow blower has not benn maintained and I built a large shop instead of a garage. Below Zero Fahrenheit here. And I've had a few shop equipment pieces breakdown as well. Murphy is ever present? Looks like you're getting comfortable with the conical shapes. Probably could have sketched it freehand. LOL! Got the tools , got the mentor. Just need the time without crises. Looks like viewership is rising. Oh yeah nice gouges!
Glad to hear that you survived the vortex Hopefully spring is on the way! I am really enjoying making the shell shapes at the moment. need to do a few large ones!
I think they both take about the same amount of work but I have more control over the final shape this way and I waste less wood. also I need fewer larger tools like table and band saws to complete these ones
Thanks John, really appreciate that. The pad comes with a car polishing kit. 150 mm hook and loop sanding pad. They come in lots of sizes and great for detail sanding
Love the use of the drill press for sanding and polishing

I just drew it from the original shell. I can add a template onto my Instagram for you though.
