Good Afternoon Beekeepers and Bee Enthusiast!
Secure Acres Natural Bees is a channel focused on the study of Natural Beekeeping as defined by Fedor Lazutin in his book "Keeping Bees with a Smile". Natural Beekeeping is not only possible but proven through our years of handling Honey Bees in a minimal disturbance manner. We are teachers in these styles but love to learn from our viewers as well.
Another person worth mentioning is Dr. Leo Sharashkin, who co-wrote "Keeping Bees with a Smile" and has brought Natural Beekeeping to the main stream through his website "HorizontalHive.com".

2024 Secure Acres Honey Harvest
We are very proud to bring to you a video of our 2024 honey harvest. In this video we go into two hives and show you the bees, extract honey, winterize the hives, and finally head back to the barn to press the honey we pulled. It was as much fun as the honey was delicious.

Five Tips when Starting Beekeeping, Naturally
Great content sir.
Thank you!
I'll see you soon too. 😉
I need two suits going in my hives , I'd love some calm bees like this
You must live in the south where the bees are a lot more aggressive.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees very far south st lucia 🇱🇨
That island looks beautiful!
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees thanks alot it is a very nice place but just like everywhere else u do find the occasional bad apple.
Nxt year I'm thinking of keeping queen excluders on my entrances to help with swarming and just split when i need to . So any ideas for me on this idea .
Haven't done that before. We tend to surround our property with swarm traps and allow our colonies to swarm so we have natural splits.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees I allowed that this year , I did have a few traps around . With work I had not much time to go in when I should and that affected my harvest . Well I'm learning this is my second year in bee keeping.

I think you need leather gloves. Thin latex ones offer no protection against stings
The latex gloves have worked really well except for the instance where I didn't have my smoker and the Bees got a little wild. It is true that they can sting through them but they don't do it often.
Time for honey harvest and hive winterization. Time marches on.
Into the winter we go.
I can tell that you had a strange season, because that hives does not have a lot--if you asked me--and I realize you didn't, but I wouldn't have taken anything off that hive.
It was a strange season for sure. Both hives have plenty of food going into the winter, we left them with seven frames which is sufficient food storage. We didn't get a large amount of honey but we're happy with what we got.
Good morning Wes. I have had a few dead outs and I got some honey from them, but for the most part I fed the honey from the strong colonies to the small er colonies to provide them winter stores. I figured I only wanted to pick up 3 Layens frames full of honey, so I made a 3 frame Layens box with a lid, handles and no entrance to put my honey frames in. A swarm trap with the entrances closed also works well but can get heavy if all the frames are full. Have a great day.
That's a cool idea. Hoping all of your bees have plenty of food for the winter. Get them sealed up and let us know how they do.🐝🐝🐝
We've had quite a dry spell so I'm excited to see what our girls will "gift" us Do you recommend a particular extractor? I was looking to see if you had an Amazon product listed but don't see one Thank you! Thank you for sharing!!
Hoping y'all have a bountiful harvest! 🐝🐝🐝
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees we will definitely share pictures. As long as they have enough for the winter, it's all good! Thankfully our winters are mild here in SE Alabama
I'm so sorry! I didn't see the bottom half of your post. We got our press from www.horizontalhive.com. It was our greatest investment for honey harvest because it's easy to use and easy to clean. Can't wait to see those pictures!
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees no worries, I actually edited my comment after the fact...lol
I can’t wait to afford a hive and TRY to catch a swarm !!
Let us know how you do!
My favorite time of year! Another "off" year but at least there's enough honey to insure their survival over the winter. Let us know what you found in the remaining hives. The press has me foaming at the mouth! 🤣🐝❤
Glad you enjoyed, didn't find much in other hives but everyone has plenty of food. You could say we have an Impressive way of pulling honey. 😉
I had about the same amount of honey from my Layens hives so decided to order a box of foundation so I can add full sheets next year instead of just starter strips. Thinking if I save them the energy to make 2lbs of wax I hopefully will get 16lbs of additional honey in exchange for it. Your wilderness honey is probably even more valuable than mine so spending $10-20 on a hive for 3-6 full sheets of wax might turn into hundreds of dollars worth of additional honey.
That's an interesting theory, haven't considered using full sheets but that could help.
Lets get that DEEELicous NC honey
Simply Delicious
Love the Bug Baffler suit! This was a weird season of long droughts and soaking rains here too. Nothing steady or predictable. Good to see you're still getting some honey. I left most of mine on.
Thanks Bruce, we love using them. Not much honey this year but at least the bees have what they need. Hope your bees are doing well!
Great video! I enjoyed the information! I always wondered how you know you're not pulling brood frames.
Glad you enjoyed dude.
Yea buddy
Glad to hear that you and yours have been minimally impacted by the hurricane. Hoping your family is able to recover soon. Can’t wait for the honey extraction.
Thank you, we're safe and happy to report all of our family is safe as well. Honey extraction should be a lot of fun.
My favorite time of year...extraction!! 🐝🐝
The extraction videos tend to get the most views. 😂
Up here in NH, we have had a few frosts. Temps have dropped with highs only in the low 60s on the warm days, if that, and bees don't seem to cap anything at these temps. I pulled partial and uncapped honey frames. I was able to spin out the honey, the bees will clean the frames out when the temps warm a bit at the end of the week, and I can give the drawn comb back to the bees in the spring. Thanks for posting, peace
Sounds like you had a good honey harvest, that's good to hear. Thank you for watching. 🐝🐝🐝
I do have two questions regarding the openings on Dr. Leo's hives... There are two openings, one at the bottom and one near the middle, both in the center of the box. I'm assuming that's where the brood would be, so my questions are: Do I close one of the slots and which one? And then the other question is..do we take frames from either end and leave them with the seven in the middle and just slide them over? Or how does that go? Thanks so much!
We also have a few of these hives with the centered entrances. For the entrances we generally only have the top one open when the hive is very busy. When it has slowed down or stopped for the winter the top entrance is shut. Handling the frames isn't different then the style of hive I showed in this video. When we catch a swarm we put them on one side of the hive as we normally do. The Bees will put their brood on these frames and when we add honey frames we just add on till we reach the other end of the hive. Haven't had much of an issue with eggs or anything on the honey frames I add even with the centered entrances. Hope that helps!
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees Thank you so much! That's what I was thinking but then watching the video you posted I was like.... Let me just ask and be sure... LOL
We are here to serve. 🐝🐝🐝
about locating the brood nest or cluster, often you can feel the warmth of the bees with your hand on top of the frames.
My husband was just asking me yesterday about harvesting honey and what we have to do for the fall. This being our first year with a horizontal Hive I was telling him that I'm waiting for your video to come out so I know what I'm supposed to be doing... So your timing is perfect. Thank you so much!! 😊
You're welcome! It's pretty easy, you aren't even disturbing the core frames so it doesn't take long. Excited to do the harvest next week.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees One other question that may seem obvious, but I just want to be sure since this is our first time... We don't have straw but we have bales of hay. Will that be fine for winterizing them?
I prefer to use straw because I don't think it gets as moldy but I have used hay before without too much issue.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees Thank you so much! I appreciate you answering all my "silly" questions...☺️
No such thing as a silly question!
So glad yall are safe from this terrible storm , I know your mom from way back and have wondered how they were so you answered that / have family in SPARTA so I knew the area was spared , praying for all of western nc
Thank you, we we're definitely better off than most in this area but we can definitely feel the impact of it all. Hoping those in the worst areas can get some well deserved rest soon.
I am still confused. I’m super interested in getting bees but I don’t understand what “we do”. Like, you just hang out with them and take half the honey? 🤣 What are we offering them? Whats the upside for this bee union? “Thanks for the box?”
We like to think of it like we're providing a good home for them and also taking care of the land around them. We do take a portion of their honey but only the excess, which would otherwise be difficult for them to maintain with all the heat the excess honey requires..
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees i got a few mote videos under my belt. You are a great teacher. Very helpful stuff! I have the book bit i am leanng to topbar hive. I liked what you said about having an observational hive. Seems like an easy way to onboard and also increases chances of having more around to capture over time.
Observation hives are great and we always have a few. Very easy to maintain!
These principals are the same throughout the entire agriculture industry. Everything is medicated, genetically modified, pesticided, we barely even have food anymore. And people still wondering why cancer is so widespread. Its getting so damn ridiculous. RFK's slogan is: Make America Healthy Again.

It's Maui 2.0. Glad you were not in their target zone. I'm sickened with what I've been finding out. 🙏🙏
Wow I didn't know you guys got hit by that storm. Thankfully you are doing ok.
Thanks Wendy

Glad to see you're doing ok. Thanks for updating us.
Thanks Bruce.
Lot's of money for is rail. No money for the people.
Glad you’re okay and thanks for posting! We have several friends in Marshall and, although the town center was demolished, our people are all okay. But we know that many have died, many more missing all over.
Thank you, Praying for your friends and hoping they have a swift recovery.
Good to see ya buddy!
Thanks Chuck!
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees I'm over in Waynesville, NC. I enjoy your videos and look forward for your coming honey harvest.
Glad you were spared the rath of the storm. Hope fall was good to your bees
Fall was pretty mild until the storm hit, but now things are pretty quiet on the farm.
Glad you’re safe.
Thank you Adrienne, hope you are doing well!
That area got hit hard. Glad you got through it largely unscathed. God Speed.
Thank you.
My boy just finished the AT. His girlfriend lives in Asheville. Her whole garden washed into their house. 2 feet deep in mud. He’s over there helping out. Glad you’re ok mate.
I'm glad to hear y'all made it out with minimal damages!
Thanks Kenny.
Horrible what has happened to beautiful NC.
Thanks Jared, I don't know if you saw the pictures but Boone totally flooded.
So glad y'all are ok. Prayers for those that are dealing with the aftermath
Thank you Joy! Hope y'all didn't get hit too hard where you live.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees we were fortunate...she shifted East and other than wayyyy too much rain (months worth in 2 days) we did ok. We're in SE Alabama, so we were watching her path for days
Good Im glad y'all got through it ok.
How do you clean the press
We usually just use our well water with a sponge.
Can mice get into these hives?
Yes I believe they can, but we haven't had a problem with them thus far.
How are 14 frames working do you find needing to pull honey and give them fresh frames so they have enough room, or would you just let the bees swarm?
14 Frame is our favorite hive. Never had a colony fill out the 19 frame hives completely. We set them up with frames and let them build until October when we harvest the honey. If they swarm then it's up to them.
Ohhh what a lovely day it is… get off my branch.
You were the first person to get the reference.
I just can't see how bees survived in the wild before humans came along. It's almost like if you give the bees welfare, they get stuck on it and can't survive without it.
You said, "Honeybees have co-existed with other insects for thousands of years and that won't change anytime soon". I couldn't agree more!! Oh and @LtDan2K is a friend of Wes and loves busting his *****. 🤣🤣
We served in the Marines together, definitely a good friend.
please change the talking about not treating into not treating with chemicals! we should think of it as more about "chemical free" rather than "treatment free" because anything you do to help your bees is treatment, ie ... splitting, feeding, adding/removing frames,... that is actually treatment
people forget that bee's have been dealing with pests forever. they have the tools to deal with most anything.
Yes, there are Bees in trees right now surviving with zero human interaction. They will always be there and regardless of how much we stress out our bees the Wild colonies will always thrive, pests included.
Well it would be nice if I didn't have to treat for hive beetles but because I didn't I just lost a good hive because of beetles.
Sorry to hear about your Bees. If hive beetles overtook your hive then what killed them was their inability to stop the beetles from reaching a dangerous level. A healthy colony can fight off hive beetles and other pests no problem, and they will spread their good genetics to future queens. Losing Bees is sad but be happy knowing your survival colonies are carrying the strongest genes.
i want super treated pests in my bee colony
