Stephen King Reading Guide (How to Start Reading King) | The Bookworm
Welcome back, bookworms! Ever heard of an author called Stephen King? Wanted to read his books but didn't know where to start? Think he only writes trashy horror (spoiler - wrong!)? This is the video for you!
Join me on this video, a guide to Stephen King, explaining what his books REALLY are about and exploring some of them - both bestsellers and lesser known - for recommendations that might interest you.
Stephen King has been writing horror, thriller and fantasy novels for more than five decades. His books are complex, long and often misunderstood. Yes, he has some annoying tropes, but his imagination and amazing abilities to write complex and relatable characters definitely make up for that. King writes about the hardships of life - of being a kid, bullying, addiction, bad relationships, loss - with a mask of supernatural. His stories, worlds and sub genres are vast, and I'm positive that you can find your Stephen King niche if you'll give him a chance.

'Salem's Lot (Stephen King) - Book Review | The Bookworm
If you can read some short horror stories it must be fascinating!
Is this review spoiler free? I just started the book today and want to know if this is the appropriate review!
I never have spoilers in my reviews.
@@thebookworm6554 That's great to know, thank you!
An excellent video! Totally agree that King is a master at creating such incredible characters., perfect example being The Stand. You end up really caring whether they live or die. He is just a wonderful storyteller. I actually love his short stories and that is a great place to start with King, in my opinion. I would also recommend 11/22/63, such a wonderful novel.
Haven't read 11/22/63 but it's on my list.
I’ve read about a dozen King Novels, and Needful Things was my favorite of them. I read it like 25 years ago, and there are still scenes that are burned into my mind! I also enjoyed 11/23/64 and The Shining a lot! Thank you! I’ll add the ones you went over I haven’t read to my (ridiculously long) reading list 😂!
Oh yes, I also have a deciduous TBR list... But you know, I actually really didn't like The Shining, but I understand i'm in a minority...
👍🏻
Needful Things was the last book I read of King’s in 1991. I got burnout and his style was getting too wordy.
I totally understand. But if you still want to give him a chance, I suggest trying one of his newer books, it's a lot less wordy.
Funny you should say that, because the same thing happened to me, but for different reasons. I started reading King in the mid-80s. I became a regular reader, and can say I genuinely enjoyed everything he wrote, even some of the ones people dismiss like The Tommyknockers. For most of Needful Things, I was enjoying it. Until I got to the end, and everything that was happening in the climax felt so random, that I remember thinking, "He doesn't know how to end this, so stuff's just happening." I put the book down when I finished and just felt done with King. I didn't pick up another book of his for _years_ .
You kind of spoilt the events
Then why’d you watch the review
I love Agatha Christie! I have been reading through her novels and I only have 3 left! 🎉🎉 🎉
Wow, that's a LOT! Any favorites?
@@thebookworm6554 I love the ones in your video but also 4:50 from Paddington, why didn’t they ask Evans, the body in the library, dead man’s folly and crooked house! X
"You do book reviews very well."
I like Evil Under the Sun a lot!
I loved Evil under the sun! Even more than death on the Nile! :)
I’ve read three so far, Death on the Nile is probably my personal favorite so far. And Then There Where None was the only one I’ve guessed right.
This is not my usual genre of books. I read the unabridged Treasure Island recently (loved the story as a child) which lead me to Kidnapped and now this. I know a little about the plot, but not enough to spoil the book - I hope! I've not read any psychological or philosophical horror as such. One book I adore that is described by many as a psychological thriller/mystery and explores human nature in very great detail is A Perfect Spy by John LeCarre. Not action packed at all and a slow burn - but very thought provoking I found.
Great reading but it's a shaggy dog. It ends with a kind gesture, but what happened to the Joads in the end? You read a long novel anticipating an interesting ending and it cuts in mid stream!
There were no nazis, there were Germans
I listened to a bunch of these on audio. Seriously, more people need to read these books
I spot House of Leaves behind you! Whenever I’m asked what my favorite book is, I say House of Leaves. If you have any recommendations for someone whose favorite book is House of Leaves, I’d be grateful. Thank you, and I’ll check out some A.C. too, as shockingly, I’ve never read her work.
Hmmm... If you like House of Leaves, try reading The Raw Shark Texts (it's not horror, but it is mind bending weird). Horror-wise, I would try English Horror Story, Horrorstor (it's a horror comedy though), and No One Gets Out Alive. Hope you'll like them!
@@thebookworm6554 thank you!! I’ve read the Raw Shark Texts and loved it! I will check out your other recommendations!!!
Your English if excellent. What is your first tongue, Russian ?
Hi, Thanks for this interesting video reminding us of the excellent Agatha Christie, also one of my favourite writers.👍 But I would like to introduce to you the Belgian writer Georges Simenon. (French: 12/13 February 1903 - 4 September 1989). He was a Belgian writer, most famous for his fictional detective Commissaire Maigret. One of the most popular authors of the 20th century, he published around 400 novels (including 192 under his own name), 21 volumes of memoirs and many short stories, selling over 500 million copies.(Wikipedia). If you are interested in, please have a look at his works. I would suggest some of these crime novels: . Le Charretier de la 'Providence' (1931) ; (The Carter of 'La Providence') . La Maison du canal (1933) (The House by the Canal) . The Yellow Dog (Le chien jaune, France, 1932) . The Hanged Man of Saint Pholien (1931) ... and many more. His famous atmospheric descriptions of moody, misty ports, of Paris in the 30s-60s are really stunning. In his investigations, Maigret's method is to put himself in another person's place in order to discover why the crime was committed, rather than just finding out whodunit.(Wikipedia). Best greetings
🤘🏻
Your recommendations are timely since I have Ms. Christie on my books to read list without any books. Thanks,
please any one can help? spolier alert- the ss killed 6 people in many years and then a lot in a year. why? what was the rush? i didnt get that. please of anyone knows help!
It's like The Da Vinci Code with vampires.
The Christie Family asked! Hannah to write a Poirot Continued novel. Hannah gave a new ‘voice’ to Poirot name Edward Catchpool from Scotland Yard to clarify a different approach or view of the same character. (Maybe this new voice is what people are complaining). have read all 78 of Agatha and the 4 of Sophie and I find Sophie to be Wonderful.
Theo is a disgusting person. You want him dead. He has no redeeming qualities.
Well said.
Wonderful. Shirley Jackson is very scary
It's quite astonishing how many people mispronounce the word 'wrath'.
Am I one of them? Am I allowed to blame the fact the English is not my first language?
@@thebookworm6554 A) You are, dear. B) Well, that's not a bad excuse, but it's still an excuse. :) The point is that when you're not sure about a word and you're about to make a video using that word, it's best to check an online dictionary that provides a recording of pronunciation. However, on this one you get a free pass because you have likely been influenced by American English and Americans DO pronounce it they way you, albeit incorrectly. :)
You sure its not just like, an accent difference?
@@lowkeydeetee2779 Well, that's the official excuse for it. :)
@@PeterPonomarenko If I'm not sure about a word I will check it. If I didn't, it means I assume I know what I'm doing, which mostly - I do... I also speak with an accent and I don't think it should bother anyone while listening to a book review. Also, I do speak mostly American English but I also heard my share of British English. I can only assume you mean that the correct pronunciation is saying the "a" more like an "u", but this is simply an American accent. I know English is considered one language but there's a difference of dialect, and this doesn't mean it's incorrect.
You should also read Raymond Chandler's the big sleep and lady in the lake!
I totally intend to!
Where is your accent from! I love listening to you!
It's a mishmash and no one is really sure... Myself including.
Loved Gabriel knight
Glad to see Marion Holcomb but was hoping to See Mina Harker, great video cheers!
I also thought that there was something wrong with my copy of the book when the new characters were introduced 😂
🤘🏻
I appreciate the review. I don't think it would be in my wheelhouse because of the types of things you pointed out. No doubt there are good points to it as you said. I prefer your previous background :)
Where can i download it
This my dissertation topic 😮
Really? What exactly about?
You hated kinderman that’s it
Yeah this was boring
I absolutely disagree! I loved this novel so much. The characters are not what you expect, the setting is amazing and eerie, the slow burn is totally worth the wait and the ending is shocking and very well done. I’m actually looking for more books like this as I loved it so much.
I'm glad you liked it! It's simply not my style of book, but I really don't think the setting was anything unique.
What, no James Joyce?
6 minutes into the review and its like "Whoa guys so like, its set into nazi alternate universe and like nazis are bad and like main character nazi and like nazis dude"
I really love this book. 😅 how evil and mean the plant was always freaked me out! Lol
So Bookworms, do you like true crime? What's the one case you'd like to read about?
🤘🏻
The father in this book is the world's biggest moron. All his problems with Cynthia arise from the fact that he CAN'T SHUT HIS BIG MOUTH! 😂
Huckleberry Finn took place in Missouri not Mississippi.
I just finished reading this book the start felt repetitive but as I got deeper into the book the more i enjoyed it.
This book took me 3 months to finish! I just couldn’t at times 🥱 And are you talking about the uncle Mr. Fairlie? As the worst character coz bro wth was that man even on?
Indeed I was talking about him. A horrible, obnoxious man...
I tend to agree with your review. The book would’ve been better with a heavy editing. There were times when I just jumped ahead and didn’t feel as though I missed something. Like another person commented- I think it would’ve been great to also get a glimpse into the Mayan’s perspective. As you said the characters were extremely unlikable - only the German acted in a way that made me feel sad when his time came.
Thank you for doing this review. I agree with you that it doesn't really work as a story, but I have a soft spot for it, anyway. I love the narrator's voice - seems like he's very fond of all his characters, and I love his gentle sense of humor.
Yes, it almost felt a little like a fable...
