SIERRA DESIGNS FLASHLIGHT 1 FL REVIEW
I neat thing I’ve noticed with this pack is that the water bottle holders can be used as a solid base, so you can strap a tall package/rifles in it. There are 3 buckles going up the sides to keep whatever you set in there stable
Excellent review!
So. I had this same issue. Now keep in mind I used this filter for 5 years with no issues but I did find if I backed it off it leaked less or not at all. I did read on the msr website not to let this filter dry out. I know I removed this filter from the body for a long time before the trip that it started leaking. So I thought maybe the dry filter was the reason as maybe it swelled or something and bought a new one. 250 bucks. Yuck. Anybody have any experience with issues from a dry filter and what those symptoms are like?
Want to buy a NF O2. LMK if you have one to sell.
Is this pack a 60 + 10?
Excellent vid, thankyou.
Thanks for posting this. Mine doesn’t have the problem to the same level, but water has been coming out from that area and, to your point, it’s very hard to control how tight it is when the bottle going on and off will tighten and loosen it. I actually find it frustrating how hard it can be to *not* have the bottle unscrew the filter from the base when trying to take it off. I am, however, a big fan of MSR overall. They really stand behind their products and most of the time I’m happy with what I buy from them.
Msr makes cool stoves and ok tents, their water stuff sucks, always has.
I own this and didn't know abt the safety whistle
Great video man, thanks for doing the leg work calling msr.
Cooles video aber kann mich immer noch nicht zwischen den beiden zelten entacheiden...
Has anyone tried cooking in one of these 😂
Why would anybody want to buy this when they still have their handles breaking? You have troubles with the piston. It leaks out of the bottom. You have to loosen it up. You have to go to the hardware store to buy gaskets. You have to Jimmy rig. This thing with a Pringles can lid, you gotta be kidding me and you’re gonna put your life on the line and trust this thing out in the backwoods for 380 bucks because they have gone up I think I’m gonna pass on this one because MSR has had handles breaking for years I don’t even get Why they even put stuff out and not test the hell out of it and obviously customers are testing it and having to deal with these issues but we buy these things to take out hiking survival issues you need to trust it for that kind of cash I think I’m gonna pass on that one until they can fix all these problems because I don’t think they fix themgreat video. Thank you for that great information.
I used the retaining ring from the lid of a Nalgene water bottle. This worked well.
Thank you for this, literally had this issue over labor day and was not happy. Especially when a replacement filter is 60% of the price...
just bought one and am glad this exists
I have seen two pistons break off guardian filters in the field - And just discovered that my own filter has this leak issue. Over tightened? Unforgiveable design flaw on what is marketed and priced as premium equipment. MSR should recall, or provide free upgrades.
In the field ?
@@kahumanu5022 It means in actual use, not just testing at home.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj thanks dave.
05.37 The brain is easily accessible while wearing the pack? Really?!! I'd love to see a video of you demonstrating that. Only joking, I just wanted to see if you could fit a hiking tent & sleep system in it. Looks a bit small for that tbh so maybe I need the 65 or 75?
I don't think you really need a bigger backpack. I've been owning the Bora AR 50 for several years and it's big enough for a solo tent (Hilleberg Akto) and all what you need for a 10-days hike if you can buy food on the way every 2-3 days. Perhaps in winter if you carry a large tent.
Brilliant comparison post, well presented, informative, and all the relevant points raised and dealt with!
Bought this as new old stock 3 years ago. Never disappointed. Good space for me. I am 6'3" and us a pretty wide pad. Love the three points of attachment for the vestibule flap.
Well thanks for saving my Family $340 was gonna be a big purchase that at this time I don't think is worth it...
How long does it last?
I just bought that filter and immediately had the issue. Apparently, there have been no improvements or fixes.
Do you regret buying?
@@watchman9198 no, absolutely not. I 3d-printed a spacer to fix the issue with the leaking base and it has been flawless since then. I took it to ~10 multi days camping trips and it was a life saver.
@@frigzy3748 okay good to hear. I’m debating buying one this week with the Boxing Day sales but I see a lot of videos complaining about them. But as far as an all in one, self cleaning, virus removing purifier. The guardian just seems like the perfect setup. Btw when you store yours do you leave it wet like they recommend? And then after it sat for a few months do you flush it out with anything or just run a little water through it? Thank you!
@@watchman9198 yes - I keep it wet. It has never been longer that a month between uses, so I don't worry much about it. They recommend to sanitize it once a year or so. Maybe I should actually do it for the first time. I'm glad to be of help!
Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to make your video. We have now 3D printed a spacer. We kept tightening the purifier and never thought it would need loosening and we're on the point of buying a new one. Maybe that's why MSR don't offer a fix. Thank you again.
can you find a way to send me the file/info so i can print it myself too?
please! @@leamsi1309
I fixed this by using a Nalgene bottle lid ring. I removed the water bottle lid and then cut off the plastic ring that keeps the lid connected to the bottle. I used this lid ring as an extra gasket. Problem solved!!!
This is really the cause of the design flaw, they basically designed this for the Nalgene bottle and not for its own cap. lol
She's ok. She's beautiful
I have had the older single wall model for over 5 years now, and have camped in all weather conditions. this tent is a real performer!. first I use nikwax to keep up on the waterproofing annually. I put a tarp under the vestibule, this will eliminate condensation or moisture from the ground entering the tent especially when it gets warm. ( a few complaints about this ) I also adjust stakes and straps so the vestibule skirts just touch the ground, this will eliminate cold drafts a breezes through this tent. we have camped in very cold downpours multiple times and have never gotten wet, as for warmth it is equal to any tent of its size once you tarp the vestibule areas and adjust flaps to ground level. I would buy this single wall tent again. stakes very sturdy to the ground, stable in windy conditions, very solid ridged over sized poles. Keeping up on the waterproofing is key with this tent long term. Nikwax Tent and Gear Solarwash Nikwax Tent and Gear SolarProof Waterproofing Spray
I’m watching this through the speaker to test it out
my guardian is actually too over-tightened, anyone good a tool to open it ? i just can't by hand, it is stuck
you could try using an oil filter wrench if you can get one the right size.
@@watchmikehike5568 i actually bought a jar opener before i wrote the comment and received it yesterday, and i was able to finaly open it. Jar opener is better because it is a rubber band, when i had a look for the tool you are describing, it seem to be only metal, but anyway i finaly succeed
I’ve had the waking 6 for a few years now. Gotta say, my wife and I got caught in tornado conditions, the wind at our campsite was almost 50 mph. I had it more then adequately tied down of course and it handled the winds beautifully! But as with all tents you MUST secure the tent well. I have special spiral stakes that really held their ground.
thanks a lot.. easy enough
Any other possible quick fixes like tape (either/both to seal and to keep the the threading slightly loose like advised)?
have u ever had stiching come apart or fraying on this pack? despite being very well made overall, modern packs often have some ridiculously sewn stress points..
I have not had any issues with this pack except for the varmint that chewed through one of the hip belt pockets. I have had a few Granit Gear packs and I have not had a problem with any of them. They are very well made. Thanks for watching. Mike
Nope must be fly first or inner together 4me helm 1
I am concerned about use in temperatures above 25°C/77°F (up to 35°C/95°C). Have you used it at these temperatures? I've also considered Osprey Exos 58 and Gregory Focal 58 but my average max load of 35lbs maybe is too much. I've thought about Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 but the torso length is fixed.
I have used the pack in all conditions including warm/hot temps. I would call ventilation on this pack as 5 out of 10. Your back will get warm and will get sweaty as it will with any pack. The ventilation is not as good as the Osprey Exos but the Exos will not carry a 35 lb load very comfortably. I found the Exos to be comfortable up to 20 lbs and I'm wishing for my Blaze 60 at about 25 lbs despite what Osprey claims as the load capabilities. I also have The Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor in two different volumes. The SD Flex Capacitor has better ventilation than the Blaze 60 and it carries a load very comfortably but lacks the huge side pockets, stretch pocket on the front and a large lit pocket. Its a great pack but its very simple. I don't have any experience with the gregory Focal but a friend of mine said it made his back hurt for a week after using one. My Blaze is my go to pack. I hope this helps Thanks for watching Watch Mike Hike.
@@watchmikehike5568 thanks for the great answer!
Hey Mike ! I never comment on things... but this was GREAT! Just have to tell you the story. My husband and his buddy that do a big backpack trip every year, headed off on their trip yesterday. No cell phone coverage, no way to get online, etc. But they did take a satellite phone for emergencies. Good thing. They had an MSR Guardian purifier and it was the only one they had, they had hiked into the mountains in Oregon about 10 hours, setup camp and tried to filter water - big leak. No idea what to do... except to hike back to the car the next day and bail out, with no water for 24 hours. They called me just to find out if I could find anything online about this problem as well as alert me that they had a big problem. I googled it and did some research and your video came up! One of the first ones. I watched, figured this might be it, did more research and found out LOTS of people have this issue. Called them back and sure enough that was their problem and they were able to fix it! Great video, very clear explanation and solution. and THANKS for posting - you have helped a lot of people. We are very grateful!!!
Is it easy to zip/ unzip the hip pouches when wearing please? Also is it easy to get/ put away a water bottle in the side pouches when wearing? Thanks for any help.
this helped with my MSR Trailshot as well! omg THANK YOU MIKE
Hi Mike! LOVE the size and features of this tent BUT can you tell us how YOU LIKE THE TENT NOW IN 2022: pluses and/or minuses please......
Grest
Just used the guardian for the first time this last week. Filtered about 8 litres a day for a week and the thing is amazingly fast and I had no issues with leaks as you did. Old filter Of ~25 years was the MSR waterworks II with the cleanable/ replaceable ceramic filter. It is still working fine and I was going to replace the ceramic element for this trip and then I saw the guardian. Expensive for the guardian but with 25 yr on the original it was about time for new tech (no srubbing/cleaning with this one and about 4x faster filtering).
I've heard a couple of people saying this. I need something reliable to filter/kill stuff in water, if you don't mind sharing.... What are you using instead or/and what is your recommended water purifier?? 🥰
Lol. Easy-fix gasket. They’ll probably hike the price to accommodate a new part. They’ll get it right in Another 10 yrs.
I just bought an MSR Guardian and would like an instruction video showing the steps as presented in the owners manual that comes with the Purifier. Yes, visual learner here :). Trust in ones equipment is very important when in the outback country. Now I am wondering if this will be an expensive waste of pack space
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
"we spent 6 years designing this for the US military" sadly I believe this and it has had now 2 or 3 major failure points. :(
Me to … foy check. Tightening a Nalgene for the integrity test cause mine to start spraying as you show here. Thanks for the fix!! Any word on official fix?
Just purchased for back packing, 12" tent supports, game changer, what a great tent. I did get on sale, so splurged for bourgeois footprint as I dig how it covers the vestibule for gear space.
5:55 Do anyone know if there's a solid solution to that problem?
I know this is a old video, but boy I have to tell you that it was just so useful to me! Especially like the exact comparison of materials, lengths and weights. Well done, you got a new sub!
