10 Books I'd Save From A Fire / Bookshelf Tour
And Then There Were None made me fall in love with not only Agatha Christie but whodunnits in general! Absolutely her best! ATTWN and Murder Affair in Styles are my top 2 ✨
It’s such a great book 😋
Regarding #6, I have a theory that Dame Agatha loved playing cards, and the game of bridge in particular. Contract bridge was sweeping the Western world at the time and it makes an appearance in several of Christie's stories. I'll just bet she was a very skillful player too. If anyone in the comments can confirm my theory please do!♠♥♣♦
As convenient and easy as it is to buy a book online, I would NEVER want to miss the experience of a small bookstore with well-selected books. The experience in such a bookstore is simply and finally a completely different one than it could ever be online. Not only because of the encounters with other people, it can also be very inspiring to get lost in a bookshop and pick up books and read through them that you wouldn't have come across online because of the more targeted nature of shopping. The nice old lady who was the heart of my favorite bookstore until a few years ago, who wasn't too shy to even offer you a piece of cake if you had been reading books for hours, is something that Amazon will never have: a heart and a soul. And that's why I hope and believe that small bookshops will never die out. Because that would mean an important part of our culture would die out.
‘A heart and a soul’ is a great way to describe that extra smaller bookstores offer.
Great review. Murakamis Wind-up ... chronicles will be the next book I intend to read. I personally enjoyed the horrors and the beauty of "The Labyrinth of the Faun" as Guillermo del Toro's movie very much and hope that the book is even better. But unfortunately it's still on my TBR pile.
I’ve seen the movie but never read the book actually
Great vlog ❤
Thank you!!
Thanks so much for the reccomendations! Of the ones you recommended that I've read I've really liked. Adding many to my TBR and subscribed! : )
Thanks for subscribing! Happy reading ☺️
a little confused about why you are yelling at us about books - but I love the list 😂😂
Don’t worry, I’m confused about myself as well half of the time 😋
Eleanor Oliphant... remains one of my favorites. I hope Gail Honeyman will still surprise us in the future. I don't know if it is a gift idea but I just finished The Painted Veil and indeed is a masterpiece. 📖✨️
I havn’t read it yet, so it could very well go on the list!
Eleanor Oliphant was brilliant, loved it. You have me interested in quite a few, including The Melting and Educated. I think I asked before, but talking of Japanese fiction, have you read Tokyo Express by Seichō Matsumoto? Mike and I loved that one. This year has brought about a few interesting reads for me, among quite a lot of not-so-interesting, sadly, and I can recommend Ghost Theatre by Mat Osman, If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio, The Bones of Barry Knight by Emna Musty and In Ascension by Martin MacInnes. Happy to elaborate another time. I also read a dark but compelling (albeit difficult, uncomfortable) book by French author Inès Bayard called This Little Family (her first novel). My different books tend to come from a wonderful thing that my son did for me, which was to subscribe me to A Box of Stories and I have to say if you are looking for Christmas gifts, aubscription to this is a must. You can pick the genres (or not) for the person and their algorithm does the rest. They ship internationally. Their mission is: "Approximately 200,000 titles are published in the UK each year. Only 17% of these are lucky enough to make it to the ‘Bestsellers’ List while the other amazing 83% remain undiscovered and are soon lost forever. We curate titles that have sold in decent numbers, after which our algorithm combines thousands of reader reviews, to create boxes that are guaranteed to delight a book lover." You may know of them or have something similar in Belgium.
Bright young women has been on my list for a long time along with educated. I must get to them soon! Yes my ever growing gigantic list of books to get to 😂 I won’t complain though , I haven’t yet read a book you’ve recommended that I disliked. The description you gave of The melting by lize spit reminded me of a book called The ice palace by Tarjei Vesaas. The penguin modern classic edition seemed to be a poor translation of the Norwegian . As I was reading it , I felt like it must be so much more beautiful in its original language. It felt as if the translator basically just translated it word for word. Regardless of this it was a book that captures you from the beginning and so I’m really intrigued to check out this Belgian authors work , sounds great! Thank you as always ❤
Little secret (well, not really)… I’m returning home as we speak from the launch of Lize Spit’s newest book and had a long conversation with her…I don’t often get starstruck, but 🤩
@ that’s really cool 😎sounds like you had a lovely evening ! I’ve ordered it straight away , looking forward to checking it out and also hearing about the new book in another video
❤📚📚❤️ Nice recommendations! I loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I just finished the Japanese translated book Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa and really liked it.
Sweet Bean Paste was one of the better ones, I agree.
@@cafeaulivre 😀👍
Huh. For some reason I though Eleanor Oliphant was considerably younger. Somehow missed the part about drinking vodka and office coworkers. Oh well. Still own it. Still interested. Just need to adjust expectations. (By the way, the first Amazon link to Speak actually links to The Melting)
Thanks for flagging that, I’ll get on it as soon as I have access to my computer!
The book by Yoshimuro Keiko isn't in English yet. Maybe now that you've highlighted it, then it will get translated. I haven't added anything to my TBR, but "The House of the Mosque" is a definite maybe. This is the first time I've seen your videos and I'm now subscribed.
Thank you and welcome. It’s somewhat rare to see a book being translated in languages like Dutch and Italian first, but I’m confident English will follow. (Although I don’t think I will have influenced that 😋)
Thanks for the recs! I’ve only read Educated and found it excellent (I also am not usually a fan of memoirs). To add my own lesser known (probably completely unknown for most readers) novel to the list, check out Starling by Kirsten Cram. It is a touching story of two children, both with difficult home lives, who bond and become close friends… it is Cram’s debut novel, self-published, and is so beautifully written. It is very special and I hope to see more by her in the future.
That does sound interesting! On the Christmas list it goes! :D
Such great recommendations, Bart. Cloud Atlas is easily one of the best books ever written ☁️ I really disliked My Year of R&R but got a free copy of Eileen and absolutely loved that one, so I’ll definitely read more Moshfegh at some point ☺️ I’d love to reread The Curious Incident. It’s been a long time, but I remember really loving its unique perspective.
I had never heard of the curious incident before a friend from my bookclub just shoved it into my hands one day and simply said: ‘Read this!’…so I did 😋
I really want to read Eleanor oliphant is completely fine it was on my tbr , thanks for the reminder.
Hope you enjoy it!
Did I add some books to your TBR? And do you have some recommendations for me? Let's fill those whislists down below!
They all sound really good. Thanks for the recommendations. 😊
My pleasure!
As good a description of literary fiction as I’ve heard. I stopped giving much weight to the label others assign to a book, but you got me curious. StoryGraph categorizes your books and my most read category is Literary Fiction. This included such a variety of works! My favorite so far is I Who Have Never Known Men. Literary Fiction? SciFi? Dystopian? Not sure, but it was marvelous.
It’s a great book (and a Belgian author 🤭)
I have a huge collection of collins classics. They are really budget friendly and look nice. The only issue some people might have is the small font size
First time seeing a video -- I have already all books 😉was searching for new books lol 😮
Luckily I have more videos 😉
is this the 3rd printing collection
2nd edition 2005
@cafeaulivre @cafeaulivre oh that looks so good. current 4th printing dont have this which is a shame
I know, it was quite the hassle to find them all before they would become impossible to buy
@cafeaulivre after seeing this, now I don't want to buy the current edition.
It’ll have been amazing if you’ve talked about novels that aren’t literary fiction and have recommendations sad 😞
Do explain
good info, thanks A couple of my favorites are Tom McCarthy's "Remainder", and Lucy Ellmann's "Ducks, Newburyport." In French, Gaétan Soucy's "La Petite Fille qui aimait trop les allumettes" and Houellebecq's "La Possibilité d'une île".
Definitely checking these out, especially the French ones. It has been a while since I read in French.
Literary Fiction often seems to mean limited to "mundane" fiction...at least in the US. It's very hard to get something that is more fantastical to be accepted. You use cloud Atlas as and example when to me it seems an edge case for most of what is published as literary fiction.
Fantastical and literary fiction don’t cancel each other out, especially since litfic isn’t genre-dependent. A good example would be fantasy or magical realism: I would consider a book like Piranesi literary fiction, while the Belgariad Chronicles are not for example.
My god the way this man speaks and describes the books is brilliant. Sets a perfect vision for which book is my taste and which isn’t
Thank you! 😊
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace will ALWAYS live rent free in my head, I’m gearing up for a reread😊
I don’t think I’ve read that one, I’ll check it out!
So funny, I happen to be reading " The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime".right now. I love that you included it; it's a great story. Your definitions of literary fiction are excellent as well as thought-provoking. Thanks for a great video.
Such a lovely book ☺️
Great accessible choices. I would add in Atonement by Ian McEwan and Orwell's 1984 as a more historical choice.
Both excellent additions indeed 👌
It's around 3:20 pm on a Wednesday which means my favorite novel is "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" by James Joyce. Not that I recommend people start there with Joyce; I definitely recommend Dubliners, his short story collection as a first stop. I bought a neo-Golden Age mystery novel while listening to this; perhaps my brains way of noping out of LitFic for today. 📚
Joyce is something…special 😋
The Unbearable Lighness of Being by Milan Kundera is probably one of my favourite modern literary novels. Modern as a 40 year old book can be I suppose but then again I've read way older books than that, it would be still considered a young whippersnapper by comparison 😉
Excellent addition, I agree!
I've often found the term literary fiction to often come across as quite snobbish and more than a little elitist and proponents (often book reviewers from the more traditional critic background, not the more down to earth and very nice BookTubers 😉) of it often look down on anything else. For example Cloud Atlas & Handmaid's Tale that you started your list with crosses the line with genre SF. I've always hated the snooty attitude that science fiction can't be literary and the same goes to other genres that often get looked down on. A great book can cross genre boundaries and successfully reach a wider audience than genre fiction often commands.
I couldn’t agree more, and to anyone that says that genres like SF or horror can’t be literary: read Jeff Vandermeer
@cafeaulivre the Southern Reach books are very good, I think there's supposed to be a 4th one coming soon if it's not out already.
I just double checked and the 4th book Absolution came out on the 22nd October 👍
Excellent! 👌
@@cafeaulivre you might also like Roadside Picnic by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky.
Highly recommend my current read for this category… Solenoid by Micea Cartarescu. Bit of a mind-bender but absolutely engrossing!
Don’t think I know that one, so I’ll look it up! Thanks for the recommendation!
@@cafeaulivremisspelled Mircea.. oops!
Great! Thank you for the promptitude! 👏👏 Precise and clear information! Indeed I prefer literary fiction, I discovered in time that I'm interested to read more about the human condition, the significance over the entertainment. Some of my favorite books that fit here: Normal People by Sally Rooney, The Kite runner by Khaled Hosseini and The remains of the day by Kazuo Ishiguro.
Yes, all great recommendations! Happy I could help ☺️
The Kite Runner is indeed a fantastic book 👍
Well done!
Thanks! It was a question I’ve seen people ask, so I’m always happy to dive into it ☺️
That is the best definition of literary fiction I’ve heard. I would recommend “The Elephant on Karluv Bridge” by Thomas Trofimuk. It is a story of several individuals and an elephant, told by a 600 year old bridge in Prague. Excellent!
I know that bridge, but I never saw any elephants there 😋 consider me intrigued! 😋
You had me at elephant and told by a bridge 😉
Experimental literature fits comfortably into literary fiction. There's a book called 'Time's Arrow' where the narrative is told backwards. Example: people go to the doctor to CAUSE injury and illness!
That sounds exactly like literary fiction and it’s narrative freedom. Did you have any specific titles in mind?
@@cafeaulivre Well... the only other book I can think of which uses no rules or limitations on story telling is 'The Ministry for the Future' by Kim Stanley Robinson. Watch my review of that book to know what I'm talking about.
I will!
You defined it well, i completely agree with your definition . I would include two books in the list "To kill a mockingbird,"and The great Gatsby .
Excellent additions indeed 👍
Do you agree with my definition? And what is your favorite literary fiction novel? Let me know down below and let's create a whole list of recommendations!
I cannot imagine what living in a society where one is bombarded with constant media.
Overall, the definition seems not bad, I would however say that there are tropes that exist in literary fiction. Sure, it is not as pervasive as in genre fiction. You even mention the aspect of the human condition, and from there it is easy to spot tropes, like the search for happiness or such thing. I would say the tropes in literary fiction usually tie more into themes while those in genre fiction tie more into a plot. And I would say that is the big difference, that literary fiction does not follow these plot patterns we get in gerne fiction.
@@Drudenfusz I agree, it all depends on what we call a trope and what not, I guess. Certainly, with the rise in popularity litfic has seen in the last few years, ironically, the same popularity will create readers' expectations and thus tropes.
I haven't read nowhere near as many Agatha books but so far one of my favorites is definitely Destination Unknown
So many more to explore, I love it! :)
You can always be counted on to introduce me to books I’ve never heard of. Tin Man by Sarah Winman broke my heart in the best possible way 🌻
Ah yes, I can totally agree on that one 🥲
Penguin is to go because it's availability and affordable to me. But as I want to get more information and study I did go for wordsworth and other publications on thrift store. Recently I ordered a bit pricey book - deluxe edition of homer box sets from penguin classic, I chose it based on the translation that I want and based on review mentioned how it's actually helpful with all the maps and notes. So I can't wait to receive it in 2 weeks time. Hoping that it's worth it.
I’ve seen that box, but I have refrained at the very last moment, as I was pointed out I have several editions of Homer’s works already 🤭
Of mice and men and Grapes of wrath are the first titles that spring to mind right now
Both excellent choices 👌
A man called ove is one of my fav books. All of Backman’s books are tear jerkers!
They are, but in different ways, I find.
A monster Calls by Patrick Ness ...
I’ll look that one up, because I don’t know it. I’m intrigued 🤭
@@cafeaulivre an advice keep a pack of tissue close by :D
Noted 🤭
