DIY Home Library Build (1/2)
Переглядів 23 тис.4 роки тому
After 3 years in our home (and 3 years of improving the craft) it was time to take down the old bookshelves I threw together, and really give this room a key feature. This is my take on a "hybrid" built-in that includes lighting, bench seat, plenty of storage, and obviously lots of shelves! This video is Part 1 of 2 that includes construction of the base cabinets, upper bookshelves, and spanner...

    Very cool set! How thick was your plexiglass that you used? Is there any loss of suction since you first built it?

    • @PrattMadeThat
      @PrattMadeThat Рік тому

      1/16”. It has held up pretty well even today. I know there are losses at all the PVC connections since I didn’t glue or tape them, but that’s my preference to keep the flexibility and modify as I change the Shop around.

      I 3D printed it. There are tons of models on Thingiverse if you want to print your own. But if no printer, you could either buy on Etsy or make your own from wood. There are also a good chunk of videos on UA-cam for making a dowel jig.

    All shelving units made our of 3/4" plywood? Is 1/2" too flimsy?

    • @PrattMadeThat
      @PrattMadeThat 2 роки тому

      Yes, its all 3/4". 1/2" ply has its place, but if you try using it for cabinets, by the time you stiffen it up, you burned through your "savings" in time and extra material. I like to use 1/2" for drawer boxes. Hope that helped!

    Wonderful work on the unit. What type of wood are those shelves built of and the thickness of it? What type of wood is the trim and what size is it? Thank you

    • @PrattMadeThat
      @PrattMadeThat 2 роки тому

      Much appreciated! Everything is 3/4" birch plywood (including the wood middle shelves). The trim is pre-primed, finger jointed pine you can get at Lowes or HD, and it rip it to 1.5".

    Is your nail gun hooked up to a compressor? What kind of compressor do you use? Thanks!

    • @PrattMadeThat
      @PrattMadeThat 2 роки тому

      Nope! Thats a Battery powered Ryobi 18g Brad Nailer. They're a bit heavy, so it has not replaced my compressor unit and pneumatic guns in the garage when building pieces, but it has been great when I only need a few nails and do not want to deal with my compressor.

    I've scavenged the internet for a good looking and yet functional blast gate box and I think I found it! Thank you for filming this --- I'm for sure using this for a number of different spots in my shop. Question - how is the electric tape holding up after almost 2 years? Thanks!

    • @PrattMadeThat
      @PrattMadeThat 2 роки тому

      Glad I could help! The whole unit is as good as it was on day one! The tape is really sandwiched between the wood and plexiglass so nothing has seeped through. If anything was to fail, I thought it would be the gasket between the sliders, but they are still holding strong.
