Is Bass Fishing Overrated!?!
The topic of bass fishing being overrated is a very divided topic amongst the fishing community. On one hand you have you bass fanatics who practically worship bass and on the other hand you have people who act like bass fishermen are demons. In this video we get to the bottom to see whether bass fishing as a whole is overrated or is it as good as the bass pros claim. join me as we go through the good and the bad of bass fishing.
Also, when I mean bass fishing, I'm mostly referring to certain species like Smallmouth, Largemouth, and Spotted. I know I use some other "bass" clips with Rock bass and White bass, so I include them to a lesser extent. Especially since some bass elitists have hate towards these species. I also know that most of these fish aren't technically bass, but rather sunfish. However, their common term are bass, so I just call them that as most people do. Out of the fish brought up here white bass are actually a "true bass"

I fish a lot; mainly for bass but also for other species like trout, striper and steelhead. I also know a LOT of bass fisherman; one of the guys I mainly fish with is a casual tournament angler. There is a lot wrong within the bass community, but I think people often forget that the big core issues are primarily coming from the worst of the major tournament scene and also from major bait companies. I've worked at a bait shop for a little over a year as well and have seen just as many issues within other communities of anglers, regardless of target species. The issues are almost always from things the industry pushes or from individual anglers with issues, regardless of what they are fishing for. It just happens that bass fishing is easily the most popular fishing in at least the US, mostly due to the accessibility of it and bass fishermen get a bad reputation as a whole because of this.
It’s crazy seeing snakehead get hated on by bass anglers here in jersey. They hit the same lures, get bigger and fight way better but they still hate them. “Oh they’re invasive and endangering the bass population!” Funny, no one has that fear about bass and the native pickerel population.
My only beef with bass fishing is watching grown men scream when they catch a 8 lb fish. I love bass fishing but Im not a bass fishermen. My favorite target are flatheads and I don’t get excited unless it could swallow a small dog.
Bruh, the topic you mentioned about people introducing bass as a neozoa to an environment that its not native to and actively trying to help it spread by killing its competitors is crazy 😮 As an european (german) im asking myself if thats even legal, in the US. Here these people would commit at least 2 state offenses...introducing foreign species into an ecosystem theyre not native to and by killing the competitors probably aswell the state offense of breaking regulations for minimum legal keeping size or breaking the on-and-off-season regulations. The thing is its so tightly regulated here coz the rivers are in a really bad shape and most relevant species (≈30% of our total species) cant reproduce by themselves but need to be bred and released into their original environment and should at least be given the chance to reach adulthood and reproduce at least one time...pike, pike-perch, trout, salmon, carp, eel etc. Thats why im so interested in bass fishing as a shtf-prep, its one of a couple of species that have no problems whatsoever reproducing independently.
This is the first fish I ever caught that I decided to cook!! I did a terrible job :) it was my first time filleting a fish and my first time trying to batter and fry something
can i eat it though. I really wanted to hear ur thoughts on this.
@@MehediHasan-wi8wc You definitely can, I never have as I’m pretty much exclusively a sport fishermen (which some people hate but I don’t care). But I’m sure someone out there has some form of bass dish you could try. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on their taste, but they are in the sunfish family at the end of the day 🤷♂️
It is very overrated, same thing with some people who fly fish for strictly trout- abhorrently elitist over some fish that simply aren't a worthy gamefish when compared to others. Like you said, rather a big pike(or striper) test my knots on my 10wt rather than a comparatively weak rainbow. I could swear the current does 90 percent of the fighting.
If you dont like bass then you dont like them but we really do not need to start a argument over which fish is better or worse. Go target what you want and just fish good lord.
Fr this video is kind of ironic in a sense
Personally I’ve only ever caught three bass my entire life so far which is a bummer because I was so excited to fish for them in the beginning when I was 16 (in my 30s now). Before then, I was going for trout and on the occasion cats and bullheads and come to think of it I’ve caught more bullheads in one trip then bass all these years. Also, it’s a shame that in many states including the hell state I live in now won’t allow you to keep the bass you catch. I hear they’re delicious.
Growing up catching musky pike and walleye before I ever caught bass. Bass are pretty much nothing more than large pan fish. You realize this after being humbled by musky and pike. I do enjoy bass fishing when I feel like catching lots of fish. Not just one or two trophies.
@@timjones8184 For sure the true top predators in the lake are a very humbling fish. However big 10 pound bass are a crazy fight and are trophies in their own right! Would love to catch one of those some day!
I personally, do not like largemouth all that much, I do love smallmouth, they’re my favorite, and for any reason you’ve said. However, even though I love them very much, I do not believe that they should be placed everywhere, especially in places such out west where trout fishing is very popular (I love to fly fish for smallies and trout but wanna start trying for trout more). People should keep bass where they’re native. If the government decides to put them somewhere, then that’s the governments fault, but never should native species be killed off just because you wanna catch a dink bass.
I caught a bowfin while night fishing once and I had to stalk this guy for three hours with seven shiners in order to finally hook him. There was a nice little inlet surrounded by vegetation near the dock I was on that he was hunting around and he kept going for whatever I put in the water, so it became a point to hook him. I eventually got him after I back hooked a shiner instead of lip hooking and the hook finally set on him, he'd been slamming into the middle of the bait all night and ripping 'em off with the speed he was going at. Had a bit of a bulge in his stomach when I finally got a look at him and when he got back in the water he was off like lightning and never came back to anything I put in the water. Only ended up being about 12-13 inches in length, but the thing put up one hell of a fight for how small it was; surprised the hell out of me. Come to find out that males grow 18-24 on average and females can grow up to 30! Would love to catch another one sometime, but bigger for more fight for sure.
I intentionally target rock bass. They are usually larger and stockier than bluegill. In Wisconsin, there is no limit. I bring home around 5 pounds of fish everytime I target rock bass, they are delicious. They are also beneficial to the Midwest because they eat the invasive rusty crayfish, helping the ecosystem.
I live in Wisconsin, and a lot of people snag fish. To be fair, salmon fishing from shore is VERY difficult, but come on. There are plenty of times where a fisherman is casting lures and accidentally snags a fish due to their high concentration, but those often come unhooked or are thrown back.
Peacock Bass in a league of their own
I think bass fishermen need to work on their hooksets. Bending down and then twisting your whole body and setting the hook so hard that they literally launch the fish out of the water is overkill. "Rippin lips, bro" yeah and you wonder why there aren't any big ones in your water. Because they can't eat properly after you "rip some lips". Also I don't kill "trash" fish unless it's posted by local wildlife authority, which i think if everyone did, we would have better fisheries. I've seen game wardens confiscate fishing licenses of people who were stacking carp on the bank because "it helped the bass". They also got mandatory court and a $500 fine. Bass bros aren't trash fishermen, people are trash fishermen, and we've all ran into one at some point regardless of what they are fishing for.
Bowfin are marvels. Literal dinosaurs: Anything that has survived that long has to be appreciated for that alone. I’ve caught 7-8lb bowfin and they will rattle your cage for sure. In terms of whether they’re “detrimental” to an ecosystem, they’ve survived millions of years virtually unchanged so by definition they’ve outlasted everything else in that ecosystem. They are integral.
Bass fishing became overrated when tens of thousands of googans were created in the last few years, all of whom watch the same tik tok vids and UA-cam shorts, use the same gear (Shimano SLX DC, 50lb braid), throw the same baits (whopper plopper, wacky worm), show no courtesy or etiquette, and put ponds and rivers on blast to all their idiot googan buddies to abuse and trash. Hopefully in a few years they’ll disappear and bass fishing will go back to us who’ve been doing it for 40 years and laugh hysterically at all the 13yo’s putting out their “bass fishing tips” videos.
Bass suxk goby’s fight beter
Worst bass eitism ive ever seen is my friend who talks crap about someone fishing for smallies instead of largemouth because they “on average are smaller”
On average smaller but they fight 3x as hard. I’ll take a 3lb smallie over a 5lb largie any day of the week.
smallmouth are objectively better gamefish and it's not even close too lmao
More than once I have found small bullheads in the stomachs of walleye. A prized gamefish in my area. Something called a willowcat comes to mind.
@@lovebug1336 they are an important food source to other fish! Those massive schools of bullhead really help fatten up certain predators
No it isn't.
I manage a state owned lake. They own 23 they have for public fishing. I weigh every single fish that leaves my lake. I have a serious problem with bass fishermen absolutely refusing to take bass from the lake. They were brow beaten by dad and grandad about you release ALL bass. Myself and the state biologist cant make them understand that there is unlimited creel below 14 inch to make sure they dont overpopulate. Our lake record for black/large mouth is 13lbs 4 oz. When the biologists do their surveys they collect a few in that range every time. But its because if they dont come and take bass the state will stun them and toss them on the bank for the eagles and such to eat. Its not unusual for the average bass fisherman to come here and catch 3 dozen bass between 2 and 6 lbs on a regular basis. The bass fishermen absolutely hate any other fishing and the people that do it it seems. They would remove everything but bass and forage for the bass if they had a choice.
Stop the glaze on bass
are rosey barbs the same as cherry barbs i was thinking of having them as my main schooling fish but if they are fin nippers then ima look for other options
@@slow_cl9tsx Rosy barbs and cherry barbs are two separate barbs. Id recommend cherry barbs over rosy barbs as the Rosie’s can be fin nippers. Cherry barbs are super peaceful and beautiful with their either gold or red color!

Did you really compare snagging to the slave trade?? What a moron... funny with all the 'real job' insults from a youtuber.
Great fish for kids to catch when learning how to fish.
I will always love smallie fishing. My favorite especially because I'm near lake Michigan. But people over hype it overall
I'm blessed that my grandpa and uncle who are bass fisherman accept me as a catfish fisherman as far as bass fisherman go they are far more tolerant of fisherman going after other species than most.
@@TheIconicFisherman I’m glad you were accepted 😂. Going to be honest it was kind of a pretty funny way to put it
I fish to fish, I enjoy the experience of catching any species. Even if I catch nothing I can enjoy being outside away from the daily work garbage.
@@ecarots9469 You have a good fishing mindset
Yes
Any species specific fisherman has an ego to get under control. See crappie guys get more mad about landing a largemouth than guys trying to pull a tuna past a shark....like what dude ? I don't get it. Unless there's a reason you don't want to land a fish mabey a catfish, even bluegill-spiney little bastards but my God that's part of fishing. What happens if you hook an ACTUAL predatory fish with teeth😂😂
@@ronmatson5502 Woah easy there we don’t want to make them too mad they’d only like to have their fish in every waterway across the world
@Fishman2114 i do love trying for crappies but makes it that much more fun fighting a bass because I have lighter line on those poles usually
@@Fishman2114what’s the appeal to crappie fishing anyway? I’d always just assumed everyone fishing for them was keeping them for dinner.
Bass fishermen are often hateful snobby elitists. They've officially transformed the sport into on the water Nascar. My advice is to keep targeting bigger species and save your money so that you can continuously tell them that they're ten pound. PB looks like the bait you use in saltwater.. 😅
Bass fishing isn't over rated, fishing is a great way to enjoy some time. What's over rated are the pompous assholes who believe they're special 'cause they caught a friggin' fish...God bless everybody.
And they only use the best gear Blah Blah Blah !
I have caught what we in new england call horn pout in sand bottom ponds that had kind pink flesh and they taste real good. I tried eating bass once with the emphasis on tried to eat. They may be fun to catch but as far as I'm concerned that's where it ends for me 😊😊😊😊
The asians deserve the bass they infected us with carp
Bass are really overrated if you catch a 1 pound trout (ok size for trout) compared to a 1 pound bass the bass seems like a total wussie I like all species of fish equally except for dumb ahh invasive fish.
I’d argue that it is good to have fish like bowfin around because they control the bass population
@cameroonkendrick6312 It’s for sure good, and it’s like that for any fish. These fish all fill an ecological niche which leads to better, healthier ecosystems when they are all present. It’s never good to just have one of two species in a waterway. And it’s like that for any species, the bass will just as happily eat the smaller bowfin and vise versa. Too many fish will stagnate the fish’s growth long-term
Peacock bass fishermen can be even worse because they will kill native species including largemouth because they think they outcompete peacock bass, leaving many bodies of water as dead zones where you can only catch peacock bass, cichlids, and clown knifes
Anyone who just leaves a fish on the back to die is a sadistic asshole and more than likely the worst kind of boomer(absolutely no offense to the boomers that are cool and don't kill fish without eating them)
Bowfin are my favorite fish to fight with! The fight they put up is legendary and they just super cool animals in general! Also too dude-if you ever make it out to michigan ill take you to lake st. Clair and get you on to some bowfin!
