I made $800 buying used film cameras - Thrift Haul
I've just gotten into film photography and have yet to develop my first roll. Thank you for such a detailed video. I had questions with a lot of the other ones I've watched and this one just answered all of them.
Thank you for sharing this tip. It's been a great help.
Well, i almost botched my first time due to hubris, i tried loading some film i had developed previously on a reel before tried it with the real thing with no issues Soon as i was in the dark, i found one other feature that felt like those little nubs where you feed the film 😅 And then Amongst that frustration in the dark, i realized i had a light leak in my "dark room" (bathroom with a towel under the door jam & the lights turned off in my bedroom. Definitely getting a bag now But somehow my film appears to be okay! I may have panicked a bit, but your instructions were still plenty clear for me to follow even through all that. Thank you for the info!
I bought a brand new miniature Minox Lieca If camera several years ago for my collection, therefore I never used it, however over time that vulcanized rubber coating broke down and I had to remove it with 90% isopronyl alcohol. I have had other stuff brake down with this vulcanized coating, and for this is the reason I won't buy anything that has this vulcanized coating, as it is a garbage coating that will brake down over time, not to mention the poor engineering of this substance!
What is that mat called? A great video very interesting. There is a place to buy micro screwdriver sets but they are asking £70 do I need to spend that amount?
Rubbing alcohol doesn't always work. It only worked onetime for me. They say to use goo gone.
Can someone please tell me the name of the chemicals, because I can’t find the chemical mix he’s using in the video 😢
I used Unicolor in this video and you can also use Cine Still
Hoppe's # 9, a gun cleaning solvent works too
Great tip
what if you scan it as a positive in silverfast with 48bit HDR raw + as a tiff.. it wouldn't have a higher capacity to edit the rest in Lightroom?
yes?
hey, I’m wondering why you didn't export as a tiff to color correct in Lightroom for the silverfast photo, wouldn't it have saved more color information to edit with?
The color correcting works well with a RAW
I’ve found that constant agitation at 80 degrees avoids streaks.
Some machines roll constantly. this is just the recommended for this tank
Don’t wind your film all the way into the cartridge when you rewind the film in camera.
yeah, i just dont think about it. the film leader retriever works really well. its good to go all the way in so you cont confused a used roll with a new one
Are you happy with the Mamiya, especially the lenses? I’d like to try a medium format but Rolleiflex(es?) became too expensive to justify it tbh
Yes the Mamiya is my favorite film camera. a good starting point is a bronica
Awesome video, I wish color hadn’t become so absurdly expensive…
It is expensive but you shoot less and its more meaningful. They make a new camera that splits the 35mm frame in half to give you like 64 frames on a roll
Also if you develop yourself it saves a ton of money.
I just bought the stuff to follow this video and finally get started developing. State Film is awesome, but not for my bank account. Thanks for the awesome video!
I am so glad I could help!
Just come across your channel. Love your content and and videos. Excellent photography
Thanks so much! Happy that you are here
disclaimer: don't put your lenses and cameras close to developing liquids even thou it looks cool on videos. Acid vapours or drops might spoil multicoating layer on glass or metal surfaces.
It looks cool on videos. haha
Wow. Padding your videos much? Geez. Alcohol & qtips and paper towels. Took you a whole 11 minutes to communicate this? Well at least you beat the 10-minute mark for the UA-cam algorithm. Sheesh
This video was in a series of videos and conveys more than the tip. every comment like this one gives the video more reach including my response. I love your engagement.
Thank you!
Glad I could help
As someone that has recently come to own two 120 cameras, a Mamiya 645 AFD and a Fujifilm GA645Zi, I was already discovering the cost of this hobby. As a DIYer in all other things I thought I should give this a try and of course came to YT to find out how. At about $20/roll develop and scan it really starts to add up. What I did find though is that at least the Mamiya takes outstanding shots even without much work. I have my first roll in the other one still. My one other time attempting to develop film I was about 15 years old without any money to buy all the necessary items and it was a disaster. In the 55 years since I never tried again! This was a great video and gives me the courage to just try it. I have a roll of 120 film that was already in one of the cameras that I'm not going bother developing to use as a practice roll. Bringing it to the lab takes as much time as just doing it myself. I also have the benefit of living in NYC so getting the equipment won't involve ordering, just a trip to B&H or Adorama. One question though, I have a sous vide that I occasionally use. Would you still use it for cooking if you've used it for the chemical water? I see the bottles go into the bath. Maybe just put the bottles in a plastic bag when warming?
I am so glad the video has helped you and hopefully helped you save some money too. with the cost of film high, and developing at labs high too, we need cheap solutions! for the sous vide, mine doesn't really touch chemicals but i guess it could. but also when you cook in sous vide it is usually in bags. So i wouldn't worry too much about it but totally up to you.
@@film_friends Did my first roll today. A few things were a PITA. First, getting 120 film on the spool was difficult. I just couldn't get it started. When I finally got it on after about 20 attempts, I got to the end and the tape ripped and I couldn't get off what stuck to the film. I put it in the tank and closed it up anyway. But then I had a thought, just cut it off. I put a scissor in the bag along with the tank and took out the reel and cut off the end. Perfect! Next was heating the water and mixing the chemicals. You say 130 degrees but the kit instructions say 100 or near whatever temperature you will use to develop. I killed the sous vide at 120, but then it took a really long time for everything to cool back to 102. From there everything just worked out ok. The good part is I have images on my negatives. The film is curling as it dries so I have to figure something out to prevent that. In fits and starts, including re-watching the video, it took from about Noon to 5:30. It won't take that long going forward I hope since the chems are ready.
Awesome video thanks!!
So glad it could help
I really struggle with this product and my negatives are always underexposed and foggy. I follow the instructions but sadly have not had a decent set of negatives. For something so simple I am lost at what I’m doing wrong 😢
yeah, I don't think it nails it as much as a full cycle through black and white chemicals but I think tit works well for what it is.
Would you know why some of my imports from scanner aren’t allowing me to white balance, when trying to edit in Lightroom classic ? I was able to early on, then all of sudden something changed. The white dropper is greyed out now and I can use it, so then I can use negative lab pro. Thank you !
Gosh I am really not sure why it would be grayed out like that. were you able to figure it out?
My issue is finding a film holder that will scan all 4 frames of 120. My Epson v.850 holder can only accommodate 3 images.
120 in what size? 6x6 6x4.5 6x7?
A piece of 3/4" thread pipe, a flange, a piece of wood, a manfrotto super clamp and a ballhead (which I already had) created a copy stand for me to do this very much on the cheap. I too could not understand why basic copystands were so expensive. I bought the valoi film holder but made my own makes out of wood in the ship much like you printed the base thing. I also have the Raleno light, works great! Fantastic video, this clearly shows how the system works, how to use a mirror and perfect simple camera work with good audio. Great job!
Thanks so much. I am not sure why copy stands are so expensive. Makes no sense. I was going to design one but we live on a boat now.
Thank you for this. I woke up today and my X-t30 and X-t10 have started doing this. Now I can fix it :)
So glad i could help
23:19 "I am never going to financially recover from this."
This was back when film was cheaper
It might remove the sticky goo surface, but you're just exposing a fresh surface which gets sticky again in a matter of weeks. The entire grip decomposes, boggles my mind why the industry keeps using this sh*t on expensive cameras even today. I have two Olympus OMDs and a PEN all of which have this problem. Very disappointed, makes using them very unpleasant.
THats a good idea
Thank You
You're welcome!!
Top notch! Thank you!
Thanbks so much
7:00 Why do you think that the opening can scratch the film ? What makes it different from the other designs ?
Just the way that it goes in is super close to the film
Emulsion side up or down? Not all film has numbers.
I actually found it didnt matter
This might be a dumb question but, I don’t have a laptop yet. Do I need a laptop to use this scanner ? Is it compatible with smartphones ?
yes you do
@@film_friends Thank you 🫡
Good video, man. Like it a lot. It was really useful for me. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Getting technical, tweaking the Y,M,C channels will be similar to using the darkroom. I worked with someone who could look at a print, decide that it needed more green, and knew which CMY she needed to add to get the effect. Also- each film has its own colour profile. depending on the settings in camera, it can effect that outcome.
yeah thats a great way to work
I've been looking for info on the backing paper everywhere, thank you! I was gifted a Kodak Tourist many years ago. I shot one roll of 620 on it in 2016/2017, and haven't developed it. I used to have CVS do my 35mm, since they just sent it out to Kodak anyways. Even though the 620 I have is also C41, they wouldn't touch it. Gave developing 35mm a shot last year, and it came out good. Now that i have a visual of how the backing paper comes off, I will give my roll of 620 a shot! Thanks!
THats really great. I am glad I could help! The backing paper can be a little tricky but you can feel the difference
Skip to 4:40 We already know why we are here thank you
Welcome
That film leader finder is the coolest thing I've ever seen!
It rocks
@ once’s it a little out can you pull the whole thing out of the canister when you are in a dark bag?
The one i have has the eye focusing and it works really well!
That’s sick!
Please how long do you leave the distilled water before mixing the chemicals and chemicals are mixing to heat up when using the sous vide
Until it is at temp of 102f
@@film_friends thank you so much
Just curious... how long does it take to scan each negative at 3200 ppi?
maybe like 15 sec
@@film_friends Really? All the other UA-cam videos I've seen say the scanning time is 90-120 seconds per image.
had to subscribe, this vid is that good
so glad i could help
That eye tracking technology was used by the military on fighter jets after Cannon’s development ....
thats nuts
Super helpful, thanks!
Glad I could help
Please Do I have to heat up the chemicals everytime I need to develop the film, and you also identified because your in the us you have to change to Fahrenheit, does it really matter, or I just use the same number figure you used which was 130, and just convert it to Celsius.
You can do what you need to but it needs to be 102f
@@film_friends thank you
Liked, subrlscribed, saved a shortcut to my desktop
Thank!
30:00 - rinsing with sink water is okay but you really need to make sure its a similar temperature to your dev and blix because otherwise you can encounter reticulation patterns from shocking the film at a different temperature.
That’s a good tip
Best travel camera... worst travel lenses. I think Zenzanon was made with window glass. They are so poor. My Olympus OM 35mm is much sharper. I would like to try the Schneider Variogon Lenses for Bronica because I'll sell all my Zenzanon. I love the camera, but I don't like the lenses. Mamiya Sekor are much better.
I sure liked it!
crazy how expensive everything is now after inflation :(
I know, cant afford anything
Thanks bro!!
Absolutely
