Forest to Fire: Heating our House by Wood
We heat our house entirely by burning wood in out wood-stove that we harvest from our land. This does take a decent amount of work to bring the wood in, but other than a bit of bar oil, gas if we are using our gas saw, and unquantifiable wear on the tools it is just that work. It feels good to be self sufficient in this aspect of our life. Video on all the ways out house gains heat: ua-cam.com/...
Raising a Path in Our Yard so We Don’t Get Muddy Feet
The path leading to our pond over the years has become a bit sunken and thus often wet and muddy. A particularly bad path to be muddy as it is the one we most commonly traverse in bare feet; right after they were clean from jumping in the pond. With the desire to maintain the nice soft grass I am digging that up and filling with gravel before replacing the grass over the top. A lot of work but ...
Spring Check - Year of Trail Adoption

In adopting a section of the Long Trail, a hiking trail which runs the length of the state of Vermont, I’ve committed to doing periodic light maintenance on it. This is my trip out before the start of the hiking season to make sure the trail is in good shape for those who will be soon be hiking it. Filmed mid May 2024

Bike-Backpacking Overnight
Just as an adventure I packed up what I would need for a solo overnight and some trail work (plus the filming) and put it on my back for a bike ride out to some property my family has a couple of miles away. I spent the night before biking back the next morning, just barely beating the rain home. A few lessons learned generally about my gear from from this trip, plus that I don’t want to bike w...
Good Design of Charging Indicator
I think there is a really smart design of the charging indicator on my rear bike light. Its just a single light that does not even change color, but it can still give me the state of charge, by modulating itself. Rather than a light that just tells you it is charging an it might change color or turn off for full, but I don’t know how far until it becomes full. This charging indicator light will...
Why Taller Grass Next to Added Dirt?

In my fifth year (and third video: 2020-2022: ua-cam.com/video/5VSoPjXkd6Y/v-deo.html 2023: ua-cam.com/video/5vGV-upUobM/v-deo.html) I use tile painted different colors in an attempt to see if the reason I am seeing taller grass growth next to the dirt I add is due to the darker colored gravel absorbing more heat from the sun. Experiment conducted early April to early May 2024
Watertight Case for Audio Recorder Construction
I recently bought a new audio recorder after my previous method of recording from my microphone for the past nearly four years on my phone has never truly worked well and has been having serious issues for the last two and a half years (which explains why there will be four differently types of microphones/recorders for the audio on an upcoming video). I wanted to make a case to protect it whil...
Fenceless Pasture?
This was filmed prior to cows being out in the pasture for the season so I can’t be certain that a temporary fence will not be put up prior to them being let out but that seems highly unlikely. A treeline, particularly one that is partially fenced, is not where farmers typically put up a temporary fence, there is no reason to move it in that location. Instead the terrain is acting like a natura...
Multipurpose Backpack Straps
My backpacking experience has shown me that having a day pack on a trip is useful. While I can bring a separate one I like the opportunity that a detachable brain can provide to create a day pack, I have yet to find a pack that seems to do it efficiently and well. Also, I am not a huge fan of built in straps as a way to attach items to the outside of a backpack. If they are going to be included...

Backpack Features I Looked for When Purchasing a New Pack
Close to a year ago I bought a new backpack in a rush, I needed one for a trip that I was only flying carry on and my existing backpacks were too big or too small for that. Given that it did not really fit me (I made it work for the week of backpacking) I needed to look for a new one for some adventures I have planned this summer. When looking for this new backpack there were a couple of things...
Shovel Selection

I am often frustrated by the shovels others choose to have that I then have to use if I am shoveling at places other than my house. Why Road Paint Wears Out
By the time spring rolls around the pavement markings on our roads in Vermont are often hard to see. In online posts and even in person conversation I’ve heard people complain about how the plows scrape them off. However, I think there is evidence in the pattern of how they wear out the shows it is not the plow blades doing most of the damage to the road paint. Example photos and videos taken e...

Here in the UK I use Aspen 4 which is an excellent fuel and better value than Colemans. I always ensure my dual fuel lamps, stoves and appliances (such as generators) are stored with Aspen 4, rather than unleaded petrol (gasoline).

What is the gadget called you place around your cooking fire as a wind break?

    • @KestrelOwens
      @KestrelOwens Місяць тому

I am not sure it has a specific name, I would just call it a wind shield. Its not just to prevent the wind from interfering with the flames of the stove, but also (along with the sheet that I place the stove on, not visible) reflect at least some of the radiant portion heat back to the pot.

Is it the darker colour though? Because things that are black will absorb heat faster but dont they also disapate that heat faster too?

I don't know enough about the physics to give an actual answer but that might really only be a significant factor at higher temperatures.

Interesting video! I think your neighbor is correct, and that you are right that fertility is a factor as well (though I suspect it’s minor in comparison). I've noticed the same effect along the edges of my yard (surrounded by cement), along the edges of sidewalks, in cracks, etc. I think the higher temperatures and earlier germination is definitely a part of it. I also wonder if the extra water runoff from those hard surfaces contributed as well. I would try burying a stone paver a few inches deep and painting it black with charcoal or something. That'll increase the temps the most as close to the root zone as possible, simulating higher soil temperatures. My guess is that'll maximize the effect. Fertilization might contribute even further On the opposite end, a white/reflective low height umbrella (like shiny white cardboard close to the soil without touching it) would minimize heat and insulation without contributing fertility. Lots of variations to try. buried/unburied, painted/unpainted, fertilized/unfertilized etc; You could even try stamping VS non-stamping because covering existing grass with soil or manure etc might trap an insulating air layer, reducing heating while increasing the insulation. stamping might remove the insulation and improve heating. You could directly test the soil temperatures with a soil probe or meat thermometer to look for correlations that way as well. Keep in mind that cold temperatures (especially a late frost) that occurs after the grass has come out of dormancy can have a negative effect, and that the insulation that kept the grass/soil from warming up in the first place will also protect it from the cold. Without insulation from the sun (and with added fertility), the grass will come out of dormancy, green up, and begin growing faster/earlier, but if there's a late cold-snap it'll end up taking LONGER to recover (having essentially ‘wasted’ its energy too early), stunting the growth. This is why early scalping and fertilization of a bermuda lawn (what I have) can be risky, and why the same ground-cover experiments (with varying insulation and fertility) can have different results year over year. The effect might be observable in the fall as well, where the grass along edges may not go dormant as quickly. That'd remove the 'reserve energy' variable of coming OUT of dormancy in the spring. My last thought is that a bare spot should show similar results to the path. You should see if there’s any similar effect in bare spots. My guess is that if the path has a stronger effect it’s probably for many reasons such as retaining more water, concentrating the water on the edge as it runs off, being darker, and adding a bit of fertility.

The string soaked in the potassium nitrate and sugar works very good, however not the way you prepare the fuel. If you put potassium nitrate sugar 65/35 and just like five drops of water into a pan stirring constantly until it all melts, dip your string into the melted fuel. After you let it dry for a couple days it's very close to Dynamite Wick but not waterproof... how to make a bit of a slower burning fuse add a little bit of sodium bicarbonate/baking soda to some of the melted fuel.
