Hunt Couplings modification transforms the Performance of these mediocre wagons.
Hi and welcome back to Route 7 Railway. Firstlwi must apologiesfor the poor resolution of this video the camera settings on my iPhone had defaulted to a low res value. I only discovered this when i uploaded the video to UA-cam.
This video covers the upgrade of a rake of mediocre Panel wagons made by Hornby. These wagons were recently reviewed on Sam’s Trains. They were described as lacking in detail but quite free rolling. I agree with his description.
I found them to be on the light side and also quite poor over points, especially when the loco was propelling them. Constant derailing and coupling overlap.
I assessed that this was being caused by the very cheap and not very cheerful coupling/bogie design.
The bogie and tension lock coupling are of a one piece moulded plastic construction with no articulation, other than the swivel on the bogie itself, and no Nem pockets. Very cheep and basically rubbish in my humble opinion.
I wanted to fit magnetic couplings because I have had good results in the past with other projects, but my preferred make of Hunt Coupling do not currently make an off the shelf version applicable to this project.
So I decided to modify an older Hunt design of coupling, and challenged myself to see if I could make them work for this little project.
Anyway I had a go and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
I hope you enjoy the video and that it helps and inspires you in some small way to improve your rolling stock.
Regards…Steve 👍👍👍

8 May 24. TXS Deltic Upgrade. Stay Alive Test…DC to DCC…Do we Really Need Droppers Everywhere???
Переглядів 5075 місяців тому
I was planning to fit a Stay Alive or Power Bank to the Hornby Railroad Deltic TXS HM7000 just as a simple upgrade following the successful lighting upgrade. Simple, because with the HM7000 system the fitting is literally plug and play. It takes about 30 second once the body shell is off. As my layout is all DC I run and test my DCC upgrades on this model on a short test track. I got to thinkin...

Hi Everyone I Bought this brand new Hornby Railroad Plus Deltic at the Great Electric Train Show in Milton Keynes for the bargain price of £95. It came factory fitted with an Eight Pin TXS DCC Bluetooth Sound Decoder. But it was not fitted with lights because the body is made from the old Lima tooling that Hornby tend to use for their Railroad Plus range of models. So this video is all about fi...

    PROTOTYPICAL GAPS BETWEEN ROLLING STOCK ! This is of course dependant on the minimum radius used on any layout. Decades ago I conducted comprehensive tests on vast quantities of Commercial "OO" rolling stock. Which revealed a minimum 5ft RADIUS is needed (10ft Diameter). Not something many modellers plan their layouts to incorporate !!! Wagons are generally the simplest items to modify, including the Hopper wagon type as seen in the programme. However this often requires "sprung buffers" to be fitted to vehicles first. Available from specialists such as "Wizard Models" (See their Website). Sprung buffers of course reduce the problem immediately, and allow vehicles to even negotiate curves below the 5ft Radius (which is primarily needed for Corridor Gangwayed coaches). A number of options for the actual coupling to be used include. Brass wire hook & eye type, simply bent from 1.5mm diameter brass wire, and glued to vehicle ends. A more rigid version allowing propelling movements more reliably, is of course thin brass strip, 0.5mm thick and 4mm wide. With a hole drilled in the brass strip it can be screwed to the underside of a plastic vehicle, with a small self tapping screw, such as the Fleischmann tiny track screws. Another more realistic option is of course the Kadee USA (British Buckeye type) coupling, available in a number of mounting formats. The No 5 type comes with its own pocket, so can be glued to the underside of vehicles. While Kadee items 17; 18; 19 & 20, provided the Buckeye coupling suited to use with NEM pockets. Where No 17 has the shortest shank & No 20 the longest shank. (Example: The No 19 type fits perfectly without any modifications, in Bachmann Mk1 coaches, closing the gap between corridor connections to within 1mm, and of course is the correct real life type of coupling BR used on such coaches !) Kadee couplings are of course designed to work with Kadee "split pole" uncoupling Magnets, fitted in OR under the track for automatic hands free uncoupling. The BR Buckeye type coupling was also used on a number of more modern wagons including the type demonstrated in the video. The four different shank lengths allow you to select the shortest that your layout can accommodate through whatever radius curves you have, down to around 2ft 6in !!!!

    It surprising that the bogie plastic would split. I have the Lima versions of these and the plastic they are made of is virtually indestructible. It doesn't file, doesn't glue. Awful stuff. Maybe Hornby is using a more modern plastic which is more brittle. Generally, if it does split, it means that the pilot hole is not large enough.

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567 Місяць тому

      Hi. Thanks for watching. Yes you are right. The plastic Hornby used in these bogies is terrible stuff. In the event of nuclear Armageddon it will be only that plastic and cockroaches that will remain 🤣 In this case it is the coupling that splits easily if the wrong size screw is used. The screw is really to support the superglue bond, as the coupling has the magnetic swivelling head and does not require the screw to allow rotation. Regards….. Steve 👍👍

    Fantastic mod there Steve. I honestly think magnets are the way to go, I’m slowly converting my stock on both gauges, just takes time. Even for shunting magnets can be used to couple and uncouple (Robert’s T S). Hopefully catch you at GETs.

      Hi John. Hope you are all ship shape. Magnets make stock much easier to use and tend to be more stable in reverse. But they still need a little assistance from the ‘hand of god’. I think the Auto Uncoupler by Bachmann could be the game changer for shunting if they are fitted to more locos. Small metal tension locks could still then be useful. I hope other manufacturers will design similar mechanisms. Maybe even something for magnetic couplings. That way we can have our cake and eat it. Stability/ease of handling/auto uncoupling with magnets… we can only dream 🤣 See you at GETS 👍👍👍

    Hi Steve. Thanks for a very interesting video. I'm getting to the point where I need to decide what style of coupling to go for on my layout overall. It's a shunting layout and I have a lot of wagons that have many different styles of coupling that I will need to replace and will certainly take time and finance! How do you find the Hunts to use? I'll admit I was angling towards Kadee couplings and very few wagons will be run as a set. But I suppose I could use hunts as long as I don't mind the hand of God working every train! lol. You've definitely given me something to think about. Top work on the conversion too! Thanks again and hopefully I will see you at GETS again this year 😉 You can have one of MY cards this time 😄

    • @route7railway567
      @route7railway567 Місяць тому

      Hey Mav …. I use various types of couplings depending on the type of train or how I’m using it. Hunts and other magnet variants are good for general use and improve Reverse running and handling. However they all require the Hand of God when shunting. Other non magnetic types need Gods piece of wire or plastic 🤣 I do think the new Bachmann Auto uncoupler will be a game changer for shunting. Especially if Bachmann produce a version that can be retrofitted to other locos. Or as other manufacturers produce their own versions of auto uncouplers. Once you have an auto uncoupler you will be able to choose the least obtrusive and most appropriate hook coupler for all your wagons. Good luck deciding which one though 🤣🤣 Regards … Steve 👍

      Hi Gordon Many thanks for watching. The upgrade in this case is the coupling distance when pulling is reduced by a good four millimetres between each set of buffers. This makes the rake look a lot better. The magnets couple at the same point or distance the old tension locks did when pushed together. There is no slack between the coaches in the rake. I can’t go to close coupled as I’ve unfortunately got a couple of tight curves on my layout. Regards…. Steve 👍

Your videos are very well done and I’m enjoying the content. Cheers Ross

      Hi. Thanks for watching and your nice comments. It’s fun having a go at upgrades like this on older models. I wish I was better at it frankly. My advice for what it’s worth is, have a go on an old simple low value model. Use that as a test bed to make your mistakes. The buzz from getting it to work is worth it. Regards…. Steve👍

      Hi Dave…Thanks for watching and the helpful tip. This is a bit of an experiment really. To see how few droppers are needed to run my layout on dcc. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I think stay alives may help me cheat my way to a decent result 🤣👍 Regards…. Steve 👍

    Very interesting experiment..! How well it will work in the long term is probably the question though, it might be very successful in the long term, fitting the bus-wire and the droppers might help in any problem areas of your layout. Trying to turn a DC layout into DCC layout isn't the easiest of tasks..! I Hope it works out for you, and that you can achieve the running qualities you seek from your layout, get well soon too..! Will we ever have an end to covid..! Get well soon Steve.

      Hi Maurice. Thanks for watching and your nice comments. Yes it will be interesting to see how this goes. I’m aiming to use as few droppers as possible to run dcc over the whole layout,and to have the ability to switch between dc and dcc so I can continue to use all of my kit. Sadly I think Covid is here to stay. We need to do what we can to not pass it on to others if we catch it. Regards… Steve 👍

    Very interesting . I’ve long been waiting to see how someone could run DCC on an otherwise DC layout . I’ve been collecting locos since 1965 , so you can imagine there’s a fair few by now . I can’t go DCC as some of these locos pretty old , but I do still run them . I do fancy an occasional sound loco though . What I’d really like to see is how some of these Bachmann sound fitted locos run on DC . However what you’ve done gives food for thought . Does your HM7000 Deltic go on DC and aren’t you frightened that you might get DC and DCC mixed up Causing problems to locos . Great video , the first I’ve seen attempting this . Hope you get over Covid soon !

      Hi Russell. Thanks for dropping in and your interest in this project. Im literally going to add one dropper at a time to fix dead spots and see how that goes. I don’t run dcc locos on dc at all. I hope to set things up so the layout is switched between one or the other. I expect snags and problems during this project but it will be fun trying to solve those problems don’t you think. 👍 As long as I can still run trains throughout the process that is. 🤣 Regards…. Steve 👍👍

    Hi Steve, DCC is simple to start with but it can get complicated if you go in to deep with block detection and things like that I’ve got a separate DC line and the rest is DCC witch I run multiple loco’s on the Hornby clips just gives you continuous power on the points cheers Al

      Hi Al. All the complicated dcc stuff has always put me off. So I decided to see if I can enjoy the benefits of dcc but still keep things simple. Im really interested to see how this plays out. It may be cheating a little but it seems that Stay Alives might make things work in my favour. In the future I think they will become a standard factory fit. If I’m not mistaken isn’t one of the manufacturers already doing that, for a price of course. I hope to do some short progress videos on the project. Regards… Steve 👍

    Hi Steve. Sorry about the covid buddy. Mines dc only still can't get dcc round my technophobe head. Your layout is bigger than mine and I love the different levels. Get rid of that horrible bug mucker. Still got your photo by the way. .... Pete....

      Hi Pete. Hope you are well. I’m just experimenting to see if I can enjoy the benefits of dcc and still keep things relatively simple. Like you I have been put off by some of the complicated set ups and the mega costs in electronics. I’m using Hornby HM7000 on an old iPhone 8 that I had in a drawer. Also the Hornby Bluetooth sound decoders. Let’s see how that goes. I won’t be using sound chip alone. I will be using ordinary dcc decoders on older kit as well as keeping dc locos. I want to be able to switch between dc and dcc so I can still run all my yummy toys 🤣🤣 Regards…. Steve 👍👍

    Excellent result Steve, Dcc has it's benefits indeed, Multi train running especially, i only have a few droppers as my top lines are separate. And a couple on the bottom, And as Robert says the clips are great, i have them on all points. But a great result, Hope you feel better soon. ATB to you.Stuart

  • @robertstrainset6556
    @robertstrainset6556 6 місяців тому

    Hi Steve, I ran my loft layout with not many feeds and it did work although the small locos 0-4-0 & 0-6-0 would struggle on the hornby points but to make the whole layout live it needed the hornby clips in them when I did the conversion to iTrains you had to have each block with its own feed and doing that did make a huge diffence to there running and thats why I will do a dropper on every bit of track and the points on the end to end so it will be interesting to see how you get on with Dcc on yours. What dcc controller have you got to run this. I hope you will soon shake of the covid but well done for doing this video when suffering from it. Cheers Robert.

      @route7railway567 6 місяців тому

      Hi Robert. Thank you for watching. I hope all is ok with the skin problem you mentioned on your video. From personal experience it’s essential to get these things checked out asap. I’m new to dcc, and I want to try and keep things basic and simple also not too costly, so I don’t get a headache 🤣 I’m using Hornby HM7000 on a spare iphone. So cheap as chips 👍🤣 I will be trying things out and testing various wiring set up ideas. I will hopefully do an update/progress video soon. I’ve got some of those clips but need to understand what they do much better than I do at present. I will learn about and understand dcc better as I go. It has always looked too fiddly and electrically complicated to me and that put me off. But if it’s possible to do dcc simply and I can retrofit my layout cheaply then I’m up for it. Regards…. Steve 👍👍

    I found that drilling the rivets out works if you use a 5mm drill or bigger and just remove the top of the rivet instead of drilling through.. Like you say they can vary in how tight they are.
