Two regular guys with just enough tools to be dangerous. We love '80's imports but if it has an internal combustion engine and tires we'll give it a go.

AE86 Control Arms Rebuild
Переглядів 980Рік тому
Our cars are coming up on 40 years old. It's time for replacement of some of the suspension parts. Here is a video on how we did our front control arms on Project Crunchy-Rolla. While this is specifically for our cars, a lot of other cars use the same type of control arms and the process should be about the same. We know that the '85 Celica GTS is exactly the same process as they use the same c...
Cheap DIY Powder Coat Setup

Here are the tools that we use to get really good results with powder coating. We tried to keep the costs down so we had more money to spend on parts for our AE86 ... Project Crunchy-Rolla. You can probably get similar results for under $200 right in your garage. With these components and a few UA-cam powder coat how-to videos you can do it too.

The rubber bushings on our 1985 Toyota Corolla are approaching 40 years old, they need to be replaced. It only takes a few hand tools and a quick trip to the auto-parts store for some new bushings to get things well sorted. While we're in there we take the opportunity to to make the links and hardware nice and black again. Social Media: Facebook: TheWrenchMine/ Instagram: wrenchmin...

Meet our 1985 Toyota Corolla SR5 (AE86 Chassis)
Please do a walk through on how to get to the fuel filter.
Oh man .... Matt replaced the filter on the Celica before we decided to start doing Celica videos, and it was not easy! Matt had a full head of hair before he did the fuel filter ...... look at him now! So if we ever want to do a project that makes pull my hair out, we'll do it.
Thank you for this video! I was trying to take shortcuts by removing as few obstructing parts possible... but I conceded to your steps and it ultimately made life easier.
Thanks! I was in the same bucket, the only videos I could find were guys talking about changing the MC but not showing anything near a step-by-step video. We were filming the whole process for one of the Crunchy-Rolla episodes and figured out that we had enough video for a semi how-to. I'm glad it helped you out.
This was a great video. It would have been better if you showed more detail of how the clips are orientated. Thanks.
Thanks for the video - helped a ton. Cheers sir, love your content
My Pleasure! I like to think of it as paying it forward for all the videos that just regular guys made that have helped me out with everything from cars to bicycles to microcontrollers. And stay tuned, while we are having some things to deal with we do have some really good video we're editing and some really great music from Night Rider 87.
planning on changing my clutch master too, my slave doesnt seem to be bad and looks fairly new do i need to replace the slave if i replace my master?
Sorry it took me so long to reply. No you don't have to replace the slave when you replace the master. Crunchy's slave cylinder looked like it was 40 years old, so we sprang for a new one.
Rick, your quip about Matt "channeling his inner electrician" gave me a chuckle. In fact, Matt's grandfather and great-grandfather spent a goodly number years as professional construction electricians. And although Matt's father *coughahem* never did anything electrical for money, he did learn enough from his elders that when asked if he was afraid of electricity, he could honestly reply: "No, I'm not afraid of it, but I have a healthy respect for what it can do."
Matt, my sister says that real mechanics don't wear flip flops. She has mistaken us for mechanics.
We're moving as fast as we can to get the rest of the Corolla suspension restored and back on the car. I have the first 4 minutes of video all cut together with music and everything. As soon as we get a break from our day job we'll get it done.
Thanks for posting this video. It has been years since I've replaced clutch master. Thank you.
Yea, it's not a straight forward process. I hope it helps you out. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome vid!! You dont see to much R22 content. Makes me happy that i decided not to swap that engine in my AE86. Great job and great content!
Thanks! Glad you like the videos.
“Trained Gorilla” since when is Matt trained?
He's potty trained! It took a few (30) years to do but now we don't have to worry about stepping in anything!
Having seen this car in person as recently as 2 days ago, and having ridden in it a time or two I can vouch for the gawd-awful amount of work that is going into the old rascal. It surely take me back to a younger age. P.S. I found the mouth-sucking plunking sound as the various blue tubes were removed from their housings to be amusing and a great addition to the enjoyment of the video. A subtle yet effective sound effect.
That sound is me popping my lips into the mic. I recorded about 10 of them and took the best, then copy-pasted them into the timeline. This video was one of our largest projects, it had 14 tracks that I reused as much as I could. 3 Video tracks, 2 music tracks. a dialog track, 2 title tracks, 2 FX tracks, a color board track and a couple misc. tracks.
Thanks for being so patient on the video releases! Matt's schedule is everchanging so we don't get a lot of time to work on the cars and film. Now that the Celica is running like it's the '80s again we are going to switch gears and get to work on the interior. The interior is in sad condition and want to bring it up a bit, we have to learn some new skills like sewing and composites ..... so keep an eye out for a new video in the coming months.
I don't know how to tell you, Rick. I mean, that is an excellent way to manage long extension cords. We know because we created a "Bucket O' Power" at KXAR Radio 45 years ago. Used it forever. Matt might remember seeing it at the radio station when he would show up. But on the plus side, you did a darned good video and I know we're all relieved you avoided driving that drill bit through the palm of your hand. 😎
Matt made the first one, this one replaces my old 5 gallon bucket one, 3 gallons is much easier to store. And why didn't you make a video Ray?
@@rickh6963 Uhhhhh, because I'm not talented in that field of endeavor? 🙄 . o O (Just a guess)
@@rickh6963 You're good a making videos; I'm not any good at it. Pretty simple. 😎
First. I see you put good use to those buckets I sent you.
Great tutorial video on how to disassemble the front suspension of the 86. Great work guys!! Looking forward to the second part!!
We also have a really in-depth control arm rebuild video if that kind of work is in your future. It's for the the Corolla but it also applies directly to the Celica (same control arms.) It could also be a good guide for any import of the era.
You’re back!!!!!! I missed you guys!!!!
Yes, Matt's schedule change and work for me has been brutal. What little time we had we spent on the Celica, and it is running great. Well have a Celica video out soon and with the weather getting nice again we'll finish up the front suspension.
Great to see the progress on this!
It has been a long .... hard winter.
Yea, it's been a while. It turns out that kids and jobs and family take priority over wrenching on the Toyotas. Motivation plays a huge factor too, which has been low lately. But spring is here and we are working on a Celica episode (Spoiler, it's running great now) and putting the Corolla back together. Enjoy the music and go buy a few tracks from our friends at Speedworld!
Miss you guys and hope you guys had a good Christmas and hope for a good new years as well
Thanks this saved me a ton of time. I was trying to do it with out removing the brake booster.
Nice!!! Subscribed!!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the sub!
Hadn't done my front brakes in almost 20 years! Replaced them with your guidance , went very quickly! Original pads were Project Mu, which only saw about 5k miles (heavy road racing/canyons) from '06 to '10)@@WrenchMine
Glad we could help!!@@aphex14
I'm getting ready to do this job. I'm replacing my brake booster, brake master cylinder, and clutch master just for the fact that I don't want to have to replace them later down the road. I bought a bigger brake kit and a smaller 140mm brake booster (which will hopefully free up some space). I also have a GT-S clutch hardline to install. Although, I'm making tons more work than is necessary, I'm trying to restore the car in some form and would rather just do everything all at once.
Good luck! We have our fingers crossed for ya!
I got it done, but it was expensive. I found out with the larger brake kit that my wheels barely didn't clear, and required 8mm spacers, ARP extended wheel studs, and special lug nuts.
Nice work! My DIY powder coat videos have done quite well and my setup sucks compared to this, hahaha. Hopefully someday soon I'll have a sand blasting cabinet.
That blast cabinet saves us so much time!
Just to clarify something for you noobs, the SR5 is still an ae86!
Here come the arguments!
That was an excellent production, Rick. I was particularly impressed with your smooth transitions back and forth from "real time" to high speed ramping and back again without it being so obvious that's what you're doing. Like I said, very smooth. I don't care WHAT Matt says about you, you're all right in MY book. 😎
Thanks Ray!
Dude i did this on my corolla, fuckin bitch of a job hahaha
Nice video as always! Do you think you could tell us which pins are the ones we need to jump? :)
Of course. In the wiring harness there are three ports. The one you need to jumper is the connector with two pins. Just use a solid core wire like the one Matt used in the video. It's the same port that you jumper to set the static engine timing.
@@WrenchMine Alright, thanks a ton ! :D
Ohhh yea! This is good information! Thanks for sharing!
Don't be watching videos, get back on that keyboard and churn out more of the music we love!
First
That's a bold claim to fame!
Where did you get the new one 4:29
Harbor Freight but ($80ish) don't buy it unless you do a lot of ball joints and bushings and you don't have access to a hydraulic press. You can rent/borrow a kit from the local auto parts store.
Awesome stuff, and excellent production value ❤
Thanks! We're trying to up our game with each video.
Awesome tutorial!!
Thanks! Hope you find it helpful.
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!
You can tell that the control arm needed some love. It was a bit rusty, the bush was perished but the balljoint on this side was serviceable. But if you are going to take the arm apart you might as well do the ball joint, cheap insurance.
Glad you got another video posted. Enjoy watching
👌 Promo>SM
This was great. I’m just researching for my build and preparing mentally. Thank you for this. Where can I download the manual for torq specs?
Check some of the AE86 forums. It should be linked.
I think it's useful to show how you can accomplish various projects pretty much "on the cheap" without having to spend a arm and an egg on everything you do.
Thanks Ray!
This was awesome
Thanks!
Great basic setup!
Thanks! To be honest our wives were also pushing for the setup so they could do stainless cups as craft projects. And the first cup was Matt's cup that was done in the same blue as the parts on the Celica and I used my wife's vinyl cutter to put the WrenchMine logo on it in pink. The ladies have yet to use the setup.
Awesome setup, and the results speak for themselves.
Wow man this is perfect, I had to do these a couple weeks ago as mine came from japan with no bushings at all from how much they had worn. I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out the right order to reassemble, as I had no reference on the other wheel due to the bushes being practically non existent. Managed to find one picture on google images that helped but even that wasn't easy to find. Excellent camera work showing exactly what is needed - and everything is straight to the point. Hoping your videos will help me a lot more in the future as I work on my trueno more :)
Thanks for the comment! We are working on a how-to video on Control arm refurbishment. Removal, pressing out the ball joint and bushing then reinstalling them. May throw in the powder coating steps too. What do ya think?
@@WrenchMine Sounds excellent!
Love the portable paint booth! 🤠
We needed something small and I went to Home Depot to look for a cardboard box and I saw the wardrobe carton and it was love at first sight. I enlisted the wife to help with the crafting end of it and Now everyone can make one. And we get really good results with it.
@@WrenchMine Sounds like a good topic for a video!
Quick and easy, when things are abled to be removed normally like that. Good video!
Penetrating fluid is always the first attempt ...... Then comes the grinder with a cut-off wheel!
As always can’t wait for the next video and it feels good to have a small bite of content until the next video
A good video as always guys I love that this was nice and short and shows to proper producers
