Why is Columbus Ohio Growing? Fastest Growing City in the Country!
Why is Columbus Ohio growing so much? Columbus Ohio was the fastest growing city in the country in 2023. If you have been paying attention the past couple of years you have probably seen Columbus Ohio mentioned several times as the place to live for opportunity, cost of living or as the new Silicon Heartland with Intel and all the high-tech manufacturing that is headed our way.

About Me
After growing up in Central Ohio, the natural progression is to move to Columbus, but this was a very different town in the early 2000s. After surviving the Great Recession, Columbus has been on an absolute tear. While the recession was rough, we tended to fare better than many other cities partially due to the diverse amount of employers in the area. That, along with a focus on redevelopment of areas close to Downtown, population growth and the relatively cheap cost of living have helped buoy the Central Ohio area.
It doesn't seem that long ago in 2009 when residents were stoked to get Yuengling Lager to the area. Fast forward a short decade and today we have over 50 local breweries and our own "Ale Trail". That is just one of the fantastic changes.
Leaving for ten years, I left more or less a cow town and returned to a City bustling with boutique shops, coffee houses and restaurants, a renewed focus on fitness and somehow it seemed sunnier. In fact, it was such a cool city that we decided to stay.

Columbus may currently have a leading high growth rate but it does not have the largest population gains in the nation. Google search showed Columbus metro with 950,000 residents in 1990 and 1,727,000 residents in 2024. Dallas Fort Worth had a much larger increase in population from 3,8 in 1990 to 8.4 million during this same time period. Austin metro had 465,290 in 1990 and 2,274,000 in 2024.

With your definition of suburb, when Galena, Delaware and Marysville are fully developed, will Powell, Dublin, New Albany and Westerville still be suburbs? They will not be; because they will no longer be the furthest away from the downtown city center (as you defined it). Arlington was a suburb until Hilliard and Dublin developed. Future- Dublin was a suburb until Plain City and Powel developed- see the logic?

I’m not sure just exactly where you’re getting information from. All my research shows, over and over from many sources, that Columbus is most definitely not the fastest growing city in the US. In fact, Charlotte just bumped Columbus down from 14th to 15th in population.

As you said, Columbus lags behind the national average in job creation. Also, it lags behind the many other comparable cities in public transit. So, will the COTA have a light rail or subway. Cleveland has one. Cincinnati is working on it. Neither are great but they exist or are up and coming!

Columbus has the most impatient drivers. They have been voted third most impatient drivers in America. And an impatient driver is a dangerous driver. “Tail Gate city”. Everywhere you drive you will be tail gated. Get ready to disregard the speed limit or you will be passed in the most dangerous situations. Generally, speed over curtsy. In an accident, you cant tell the Judge - “Everybody else does it.”

There aren’t any tradesmen there, or there aren’t enough tradesmen there, so it sounds like if you need your heating fixed or your air conditioning fixed in the summer, or your plumbing fixed, who do you call? I looked up that Ohio hospital, and even though it’s supposed to be great, it has a lot of terrible reviews on Google. it reminds me of a certain hospital in Florida (Tampa General) that was on a US News World and Report list, but it was literally a terrible hospital and anyone who had an experience there didn’t want to go back.

Hey, I'm also a native these last 65 years, but I feel the need to disagree with your assessment of the roads here in Columbus. Yes there are potholes, etc, but, exc😢for rush hour, you can still get from the center city area to any part of the outerbelt in 15 minutes. Which if you've lived almost anywhere else is unusual. Literally normal for any Midwest city to have potholes downtown tbh. Salt+freezing temps =doodoo roads. But the highways in OH are better than any other Midwestern state in my experience. 2nd id say Illinois but only where it’s a toll road, seems they don’t care about non taxed roads there much.

transportation is such a glossed over issue. Traffic may not be horrendous now, but in a few years if LinkUs doesn't do anything, the terrible land usage coupled with auto dependency will lead down to that of your San Francisco's and other west coast cities, for example. People will get priced out and affordability will go out the window as it's already starting to rear its head. Transportation + land usage are the next biggest issues in our american cities. Columbus is unique as it is growing at a rapid rate, and it ABSOLUTE NEEDS to accept that the car experiment has failed and needs to be over if it truly wants to succeed. But I feel like it's not going to, or not at a fast enough pace, making it a terrible city to move to for your children. Chicago all the way.

Other than Worthington, the other four suburbs are rapidly building out and expanding. Worthington has its charm. Don't get me wrong, but it is a landlocked suburb like the aforementioned Marble Cliff, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights. A smattering of Columbus is growing northwest to Plain City, as is Dublin, which is also growing toward the growing Marysville. Powell is following with development towards Delaware. Westerville built out by the 2000s. There have been no major annexations to bring more redevelopment properties into the city. Could be considered a landlocked suburb like Gahanna? No disparagement intended. Columbus and it suburbs offer something for everyone.
