A newly found performance by Lloyd Green from the early 2000's featuring photos from Lloyd's private collection.
I play guitar- not steel, but man, I found this fascinating. So cool to witness some masters diving into the craft. Thank you for this!
russ and mike cass showed up at one of my gigs one night. i should have been paid triple for the extra stress.
🍀🍀🍀
I asked Bill Dearmore (Gene Watson Steel Man)to play Farewell party on my Mullen one day at a lesson and he reached up and pulled the 1st string with his finger.Id never seen that before. His Zum prob had that pull on it.
Man.I wish I had tracked Chris down when I moved to town in 97-99.He and I share a lot of the same personalities.
My first REAL steel player actually played w/out picks on some tunes.
Thanks Russ! 🍀
VERY VERY VERY 😎 KOOL
Is there any instrument Chris hasn't mastered? His knowledge of the history of the instruments and country in general is incredible.
The sound is all in the high-mids.
That was a ripper! Thank you. Never heard of this guy before so I'll check him out
I met Steve in late 80s, Knoxville...Cool Cat, Bobby S said, watch this boy, he's gonna be a great steel player , as usual Bobby could pick um, and was/is right on, keep on pickin Steve. Bill (pink hat)
LOL... Whaaaat is Cow Jazz?? Russ, please keep these comin'.
Thanks so much for this channel. Love hearing the stories.
Just that little bit of Webb Pierce voice that Steve imitated…funny. I asked Steve in a session one time…how many country music stars do you impersonate? Without thinking he said … “Only the ones who’ve fired me.” Great player and cat to hang with. I’ve edited this to include a story about Bobbe Seymour… I was doing a session at his studio with Steve one time… And Steve talked about Bobbe was always on the phone… That was so true. Bobbe was engineering this session we were on, and Steve could not get his attention to get more of something turned up in his cue Why? Because Bobbe was on the phone… Eventually Steve Hinson pulled out his big brick cell phone with antenna on it and called the control room and Bobbe answered it and when he did… Steve says… A man can I get more steel in the cue. Funny.
Flat-out, Steve Hinson is just so cool! :)
I love how y’all are so reverent (rightly so) about the generation of steel players before you. I have to say, though, you’re both on my Mt.Rushmore of steel players!
right? is there an instrument where its players are more reverent towards their influences and heroes than the steel guitar? it’s an amazing community.
The history and knowledge Chis has about Nashville, Country Music, players, instruments, theory, technique, you would think he's a hundred years old and not a 30 something kid. Unbelievable. I could listen to him prattle on for days.
Russ you are the perfect host!!! Eddy is so dang good too!!!
I can listen to Chris talk for hours. Such a wealth of knowledge and well spoken man.
this is one of my favorite YT channels
Terrific interview! Thank you for this. Saw you both at the Blue Room about a week ago. Hope you guys continue to do those!
So glad you put this channel together Russ..thanks!
This is a very good video. Chris Scruggs know an awful lot about steel guitars and country music. And Russ Pahl is a good interviewer who let his guest speak, instead of speaking about himself.
I’ve known Chris for over 20 years from working at a guitar shop on Broadway in Nashville. Scruggs knows as much as anyone does about the history of country music and Nashville music and the same about the instruments and people that made it..he’s wise beyond his years and he’s unassuming and pleasant to listen to when he talks about it..and his playing is just as rich and deep. Chris is a gem of a human.
Really enjoyed the interview with Chris. He has been fortunate to be mentored by the cream of the crop of non pedal steel guitar players. I heard him in Springfield, MO on pedal steel. He did a great job. Don Helms and I were friends and Chris is definitely in his class. He has a great future ahead.
⭐
Love this content, please keep it coming, if possible! Thank You 🙏
Dang! What a cool player!!
Damn Russ, you bring out a lot of insights in these interviews
This is so wonderful. What a wealth of knowledge !
Chris is a font of knowledge and a hell of a nice guy. Had the pleasure of seeing him play with his band a couple times. Great when amazingly talented people are also amazing people
I went to a honkey tonk, couldn’t find much good much, then found the old timers with Chris playing, and it changed my life. He’s truly stunning on his instrument. So much history in his musical mind.
Chris Scruggs always educates me - wish I could study with him
THA❤
Kayton changed my life. Made me realize how cool country could be.
I've got a pedal steel guitar, but it's nearly impossible to push down the strings and some damn fool filed off all the frets! Another commenter below (Paul Strojan) mentioned that there are very few resources for pedal steel guitar. I've made a set of fingering charts for the E9 tuning and the standard copedants from the manufacturer (WBS in Germany) with three pedals and four knee levers. It came with a chart for the open strings and I made ones (with the permission of the manufacturer) for the (imaginary) frets 1 through 11. I did make one for the open strings (and the twelfth and twenty-fourth "frets"), so that the source code would be available (see below) and the charts would look similar. I also made charts for some of the most common chords. I haven't actually used these very much. The charts are available as a PDF file, but I've made the source code available, too. They are available on the internet for free, but unfortunately UA-cam will remove comments that contain links. A search might turn it up, but otherwise, if anyone would be interested in this, he or she would be welcome to send me an email. I tried to do this via a pedal steel internet forum, but joining cost money and I didn't feel like paying in order to make something available for free. I offered it to the manufacturer, but he wasn't interested and said people would use other resources. I used instructional materials in the past, but I never do anymore. I think people usually can figure more out themselves than they think they can. The source code could (more or less) easily be adapted for C6 (or any other) tuning. My pedal steel guitar only has one neck and I barely got it up two flights of stairs as it was. I'm not really a fan of double instruments, anyway, and would rather have a second pedal steel with C6 tuning, but to each his/her own. Glad to see this channel and am looking forward to more content!
Great interview and Chris is one of my favorites.
Excellent Interview!
These are great Russ. Thanks!
Wow what a fantastic interview! This is great and so inspiring and informative! Thanks so much to both of you!!!
This is great!!
Fabulous!
This is incredible oh my gosh. Thank yall so much for putting this out for the world to hear.
You talked about Greg Leisz. It would be awesome if you could get him to do an interview. Thanks for doing this for all us steel guitar players/fans Russ!
I loved this! Chris is the reason I picked up the steel
Chris Scruggs should do a lap steel method course. There is very few resources for lap steel beyond 6 string c6.
Hi Paul, search the internet for Scotty's Music in St. Louis, MO. They still have and sell Jerry Byrd's entire instructional course, including all of his personal transcriptions of hundreds of songs. The Jerry Byrd Instructional Method, and the many transcriptions cover MANY different tunings. So you can start there. Enjoy!
I started on Hawaiian guitar, but switched to guitar because of lack of educational material.
Thank you for this. Chris is a national treasure. There's really no expressing how much I wish I could be a fly on the wall of the Fabulous Superlatives tour bus.
Thanks for a great interview.
