Not quite an aurora storm - May 16, 2024
Headed out to Oreti Beach, New Zealand, in the hopes of capturing some more aurora australis on Thursday, May 16.
Thought I was going to be disappointed by the clouds, but with some help from a few clear patches I was able to capture another pleasant display.

A particularly active period of solar activity saw an auroral storm, not seen in some places for a generation, bring the skies to life with dancing colours. I struggled to find some clear skies, but eventually managed to get to a clear spot in Central Southland, near Dipton, New Zealand. At times the whole sky was lit. Just incredible. A pretty sweet springtime display of Aurora Australis, shot from Oreti Beach, near Invercargill, New Zealand on Saturday September 2, 2023. I shot from Dusk until just after moonrise as the clouds and moonlight combined to wash out the colourful auroral display. I briefly saw this show in the pre-dawn hours in Minnesota. The sunrise mixed with deep red and purple auroras was one beautiful sight to behold.
Was a pretty amazing display.

Was definitely a sight to behold. The camera gives the colours that you don’t necessarily pick up with the naked eye, but the naked eye can see the rapid bright pulsing and flaming.

Oh my God... I even didn't know about the Aurora Australis. I thought that there was only a Northern light. Shame on me...

Thanks. The one good thing about the 77% moon was it at least hides some of the stray headlight glow. Can’t do much about the people driving towards the camera though 😅

Wow gorgeous deep red Aurora! Is Aurora Australis generally more red that Aurora Borealis? Seem to see a lot more red in photos/ videos in the southern hemisphere
Looking back through my videos, I’d say most of the aurora I have shot hasn’t had the vivid red. Usually it’s yellow/green accompanied by a pink/purple. Occasionally there’s a bit of blue. The red seems a bit uncommon, but many of the displays this year have had it. February this year had an impressive display that had red so bright you could see it with the naked eye.
