Questlove Toilet Snare!?
Years ago I came across a post saying that Roy Thomas Baker was a fan of using a toilet paper roll on an SM57 to help prevent Hi Hat bleed. This led us to testing out that theory. Turns out that Questlove was also a fan of this trick and utilized it while making D’Angelo’s Voodoo!!! Let us know your thoughts. Does it help with the bleed? Does it make the low end thicker? Does it make the mic Omni? Chime in with your thoughts in the comments below!!

Now you gotta shoot out all the different brands. I wanna know if charmin ultrasoft sounds different from quilted northern ultra plush
@@muckmire4995 hahahaha!
Can we get one on untitled?
What’s that mesa in the rack doing?
You are supposed to discharge the capacitors before working on a guitar amp because they can hold over 400 volts and you could get killed, or get someone else killed by posting dangerous videos like this.
Carvin all the way ❤
Dang that Beyer M88 sounds super tight and punchy. Really like the sound of that one on kick.
I love the way that Blue sounds on acoustics!
@@danthegeetarman oh yeah it’s really really good
My guess: Cardboard only - makes the 57 less directional Full TP roll - less directional + filters some high end from the rear of the mic
You’d be correct!
incroyable que uc1 ne pilote pas mixbus alors que ssl a soit disant racheté Harrison !!
Very cool, TLA is the man!! .. just had a thought, Tom, why don't you run a stereo mult of your main output into a small ADC and set that to 48k capture into the DMU30? That way you can work in 96 and still use the dmu30 for metering. ❤
Can you make one for amplitube 5 please!
Nam neural amp modeler is great
nice video
OC7 is incredible! Damn! Otherwise, the M88 is super unique and cool, and the Beta52 (and SM57) are kinda go-to, middle-of-the-road, can always work. I'd be curious to hear the OC7 and EV666 used simultaneously! :) Thank for this awesome video.
@@Boussani we could film that!!
I’ve owned an embarrassing number of kick mics… my desert island kick mic is the $70 Behringer BA19A. It does everything if you need it to. But currently I’m rocking 4 kick mics so I don’t have to change heads or tuning depending on what I’m playing: BA19A, Sennheiser E602 just inside the porthole, Lewitt 640 TS in Supercardioid 6” from the drum, and a Solomon LoFreq. With these 4 mics, anyone can make my kick drum sound like literally anything, from Bonham to Grohl to Lars… Kenny Chesney to Black Dahlia Murder and everything in between, all with the same heads and same tuning, I just change out the muffling and that’s it!
@@BeatsAndMeats all those are killer mics and killer kick drum sounds!
I never used the OC-7 but I am super impressed from this demo! Might have to add that to the arsenal!
@@joshgannet7288 gotta check one out Josh!!
Really enjoyed this one, and great comparison. I lean towards the nd-868, e902, or md421. D20 if I'm going for that type of thing. I really like the attack of the 421, but it definitely needs a little bit of sub help from the outside mic. It sounded great here, too. You're making me want an oc7! That thing has some sub wollup happening.
@@mattwinegar527 the oc-7 is so awesome!! As is the 421!
I disagree that a Beta 52 is a natural migration from RE20... I like the RE20 because it DOESN'T sound like a B52! ;-) M88 was a pleasant surprise in this test, but I think I'm gonna have to try an OC7. I have a pair of CC8s I use for overheads and they sound amazing! Right now I'm using an sE V-Kick for live use; it works OK.
I've got a feeling you'll really like the OC7!
I've used an amalgamation of kick mics and one thing I noticed is having a sub kick mic too it's perfect
We love the sub kick!!
The 421 has been my go to. Got sick of the D6.
Iconic knock!
Wow… you weren’t kidding about the oc7. I must have one now. Otherwise I’d say the beta52 and m88 are runners up. What do you think about the lewitt dtp-640-rex?
It’s an incredible mic! Thanks for watching! Also haven’t tried out any of the lewitt stuff! Heard great things though
it sounded worse in every example, just being honest lol
The Crown sounds surprisingly good within a drum beat, though it's pretty shit on its own. (Or maybe you could call it "stylized" 😉)
No sennheiser 902?
Nope we don’t have one here!
I always throw everything on drums in various ways, just to see what I can get away with, so I found out I like beyerdynamic TG D71c better than anything else on kick drum. It can sound too condensery/open for some projects, then I would go for something like a d112 or re20, they are more retained in details and boxy/old school. I would say Beta52A is actually a very good all around kick mic, the first mic one should buy if it's for client work purposes.
I agree the Beta 52A is a great starting point!
I don’t get your statement that the OC7 is a vocal mic. It’s clear that the OC7 is an instrument mic. It’s like the CC8 microphones but with a body redesigned for drums. It’s an awesome mic, I got them for toms, but I should try it on kick.
Do you like 'em on toms? Do you use AA's tom mount with them? I'm considering getting some to replace my Heil PR-31s for live tom mics. The PR-31s sound pretty good but are too big a lot of the time, and the rim mount is terrible.
@ I read that the FOH sound guy for Slipknot uses them on all their drums, I’ve only recently got mine but they sound fantastic.
Absolutely try it on kick!!!
Haven’t used it on toms yet! We parked it on the kick and we were pretty blown away. Hasn’t moved since
Oh that’s awesome! Eloy probably sounds sick with those
I enjoyed this analysis! My current setup is a DPA 4055 inside and TF29 outside and I'm really digging it.
Great combo!
The last one was a pleasant surprise!
@@User-jk8wq love oc-7 thanks for watching!
I found that an Shure sm48 works extremely well due to its 40hz frequency response and with a little eq it works wonders
Sorry the frequency response is 55 hz to 16k
U47 & 421!
MD421
The only one I liked was the first one
I agree and I knew that before, the beta 52 is the only kick drum mic I will ever need, and I‘m using it since the 90s.
It’s a classic standard at this point
Tama sounds the cleanest for studio recording IMHO
It’s a solid snare!
Supraphonic is killer
I have like half of these, d12e, re20, a few 421s, m88, 57s, always come back to the d6... It just always works, and blends with the kit in a way no other kick mic is capable of.
@@lastboxofsparklers d6 is a classic! Nothing has that click!
puhhh i love the audix mate that brings me right to the ballpark
@@p.m-audio audix is a classic!
@ The Other mics are Great Too. Second mic i would choose The austrian Audio….. Neumann, ev re20 …..love this mics but maybe Not for Kick Drums. And i know they choose The re20 kick in and for Kick out The u47 i believe for The dire straits- Brother in Arms Album, and there it sounds Great.
Hometown heroes
Which ones? Austrian?
If that is supposed to be walk this way start over with out the mic
Just the 57 please
Didnt know st anger was made in the 60s
Filtering Toms: 37:37 Trigger Tracks: 38:39
Nobody wins when you play bass with a pick.
That Ludwig Supraphonic is amazing
I don't hear the 1000€ price different between these two.
lol
I saw the Eagles with Joe Walsh ( separate bill, ) in Boulder, Colorado in 1978. With special guest, Jesse Winchester and Steve Miller band. Joe was so drunk he had two roadies help him to the stage , where he had a little metal “T” bar that he could lean his ass into…. So he wouldn’t fall down on the stage.!! The man didn’t miss a note
Ain't stoppin joe
Big Like from "ISRAEL" !!
The supra is the most recorded snare in the world for a reason. Ive had mine since '88. If you play more live, go 6.5". Studio, the 5" is perfect.
