      Thanks Alan. It’s been hard trying different things as I have many that agree with you and then others that say they like the music and the words. I’m going to try to do a nice mix of everything in the hope of pleasing as many as possible. I’m glad you enjoyed it, it’s a magical place and journey so it makes it so much easier to make videos. Next video will be instrumental 😊😊

    • @NickLivingLife

      The best way is to get one of the apps like Buen Camino or Wise Pilgrim which will have LOTS of info. It starts in Oviedo which is a large city but best airports vary from flights in your country etc. I started after walking Camino Portuguese from Lisbon. It’s easy to get to Oviedo from Santiago or from Leon etc. Rome2Rio is also a great app for buses and trains but you need to put dates within 1 month of now or it looks like there are no buses and trains and they only put them up about a month in advance. 😊 I think from international I would maybe fly to Madrid, bus to Leon, have a few days looking around Leon then bus to Oviedo but there will be many other options which may suit you better. 😊

      I think it was May when I was there. There had been a lot of rain that year (especially on Norte which I was on in April). It’s in the mountains a lot though so that probably gives it a much higher chance of rain. It’s worth it though …spectacular scenery that the UA-cam Videos can’t show in its true awesome beauty. 😊😊

    Hi Nick, thank you for the video. I am going to walk the Frances starting this September 11th and flying out on October 15th. My two biggest questions are should I take my sleeping bag and puffy jacket. I will have a liner and a hooded pullover made from Alpha Direct 90. I just don’t really understand how cold it will get during the time I am on the path. I will have a rain shell, a collared shirt, a sun shirt, and a merino t-shirt. Not worried about being warm while walking, as the sun-shirt/Alpha Hoodie/shell combo can keep me warm to about -2C. Would really like to save that weight, but I also don’t want to be cold when I am not moving. I understand everyone is different and the weather can vary, but in general, during the time period I am walking, would you recommend the sleeping bag and puffy, or do you think I can leave those items at home?

    • @NickLivingLife
      @NickLivingLife 2 місяці тому

      Hi. As long as there is no freak weather coming in from Antarctica or something, you are all sorted for walking. The alpha direct is a big favourite of mine and with rain shell you are sorted for almost anything. It does get colder in October and also it’s colder and wetter anyway in Galicia for the last week or so. Personally I have never taken a sleeping bag and only ever had 2 nights out of about 600 or so on Caminos where I felt cold enough to put extra clothes on. I have used a puffy jacket a few times like the nights above when it was colder, and for eating outside or sitting outside with friends in the evenings (alpha works great when moving but not as good as a puffy when sitting for a few hours). Overall, if your puffy is super light (under 300g) I would take it, if the sun shirt has a collar then you could swap the other shirt for a really light synthetic running shirt and then just a sleeping bag liner. I use a silk one but anything is fine. 😊 Not long to wait now, you are going to love it. Buen Camino!! 😊😊😊

    • @hoffmandarren
      @hoffmandarren 2 місяці тому

      @@NickLivingLife Thank you again! My puffy is under 300g and my sunshirt is an BD Alpenglow Pro Hoody. The shirt with the collar, I guess it is also a sunshirt, but one that looks nice and like a "normal" shirt. I will leave the sleeping bag and bringing the puffy. If I get too cold at night I can sleep in the puffy or the alpha d hoodie. My plan is to hike in the DB hoody and layer if cold, with shorts on. Then change to my light weight hiking pants and the collared shirt once I get to my accommodations and shower. I have the Sea to Summit Silk Blend Liner that does add a little warmth. I think I am just nervous in general about the trip and what it will be like. Thank you for the support and encouragement.

    • @NickLivingLife
      @NickLivingLife 2 місяці тому

      @hoffmandarren You are very welcome. I can tell you know your stuff and have a lot of nice gear. Most of the time now I would start the day and walk in just shorts and a t shirt and I warm up within 10 minutes. I used to layer up and then stop to get undressed again almost straight away so I just walk now. It’s not normally any colder than 10C in the mornings and warms up fast (I don’t normally leave until 8-8:30 ish as I walk pretty fast between coffee shops 😂). Average temperature at night inside most of the albergues is about 20C with only a few very very basic ones lacking heating but a bunch of weary people all sleeping in the same room has a warming effect anyway. Without my UA-cam camera gear, drone etc my entire backpack with 500ml of water is 3.4kg which shows you can get by on a LOT less than you originally think and if you desperately need something you didn’t take, there is a big town within a few days where you can buy it 😊. My main tip would be in the last week before you go, and you get the idea to add something into your pack “just in case” …..don’t do it 😊😊

    • @NickLivingLife
      @NickLivingLife 2 місяці тому

      There isn’t a right to roam like in Scotland so it’s technically trespassing anywhere in England except Dartmoor. It’s tolerated in public right of way open land (like the top of a mountain) if people respect it, be out of sight and leave no trace but could always be asked to move on.

      I retired 3 years ago...on Camino I realised I don't need much in life to be happy and worked out I can afford beans on toast (I like beans on toast) without working...so its a life of Caminos, nature and....beans......and toast :) xx

    As a Camino addict myself, I've watched a lot of your videos. Just one criticism: the soundtrack with lyrics really detracts from the experience, since the WORDS get in the way of enjoying the happenings onscreen. It would be better to have just music and no lyrics as an accompaniment. Finally, the last tune you use has really become the trademark close for Those Happy Days. I know they don't own it, but it's something we always associate with them.

      Hi Margaret, I get so many comments saying they enjoy the music with the words. This is the reason I use it (it actually costs me a monthly fee and would be cheaper without…but sooo many comments say they prefer it that way. I do try to mix in some without words like as the end of the Primitivo full movie. It’s so hard trying to please everyone when everyone has differing tastes. I don’t know what Those Happy Days is. Is it another UA-cam channel? Thanks so much for watching and I’ll try to sneak more music in without vocals 😊

    Hi Nick love the videos and share a lot of similar Treks and kit……but i have an issue with the way you promote wild camping and leave no trace ….as i don’t believe many people really do so…..i mean do you carry out your shit….? Cos the problem is frankly everyone wants to camp in solitude & in beautiful places but there’s a reason why it not allowed….for instance… do they bag their personal poo out ? or just shot anywhere ? ……….love to hear your reply here cos this is a serious issue affecting many beautiful areas and you are encouraging no responsibility here and you need to influence people better especially those who are new to the outdoor better….to be frank….. There are ways to shit etc in the wild and ensure this is away from water sources etc Please use your influence (so to speak) better! And please take these commemts as constructive criticism as i do love the videos! Rog

      @NickLivingLife 2 місяці тому

      Hi Rog, I obviously leave absolutely nothing behind (in fact I carried out some orange peel that someone left before I arrived). I put the “leave no trace” picture in the video as an example but I do get your point that more needs to be said for the people that leave more than a trace. The people that do that though, I think most are just selfish and would continue to not respect nature regardless of how many videos and pictures talk about it. I can only hope that a few learn by example. I’ll always include an “after” picture in any video to show I leave it as I found it (or even better). Wild camping is allowed in Scotland and to my experience there is less litter so hopefully it’s just a matter of examples and practice. 😊🤞

      @@NickLivingLife hi nNick thanks for the rapid reply! I think that’s really brilliant don’t think people really understand what leave-no trace means I’ve been trekking since I was 13 and I followed principles that were laid down to me very early on and I think it would really helpful that you made more reference to it in your videos because I’ve gotta be honest, I didn’t notice when you did a pan of a clear site you were referencing that you picked up all your shit. I think people really need to be told this because I have la lake very near where I live where people fish and camp and they just shit everywhere and I think that’s fine but it’s not because it goes back into the forest and the water and it affects wildlife Anyway, I love your videos and very happy to see you doing more reviews on gear as I’ve found your previous ones useful and it’s always good to hear from someone who’s actually out there doing the walk…. Please take my comments constructively as I’m just trying to be genuine ! Cheers Rog

      Happy to read them Rog. I couldn’t agree more with what you are saying. Years ago I was taking a group for some wild camping and night navigation practice in Wales and one of the group in the front decided to just throw a banana 🍌 skin over their shoulder and continue walking. By the time this extremely tired and exhausted individual had finished setting up their tent on Cnicht, I showed them the banana skin that they had dropped and I had picked up and carried. I then let them know how much lighter it was than the roughly 4kg of rocks I had been sneaking into their pack on the ascent to teach them a lesson 😂😂 In their case it was ignorance and they thought a banana skin would just evaporate and decompose. Once I asked how long it would take to decompose if they just left one in their bed at home, they started to grasp it. Next time I do a wild camping video I will make a big deal about leave no trace as well as just the “proof” pictures 😊😊. Thanks again Rog.

    Thanks Nick. When were you on the trail? I hiked it for the second time starting on the 21st of May and like you and like last year the Hospitales was shrouded in cloud. Pilgrims this year were probably double what they were last year, but it was still wonderful and like you I felt very privileged walking into Santiago. Also completed the Invierno. Finisterre and San Salvador and all were wonderful. I would recommend the Invierno if you like solitude. Most days not another pilgrim in sight until the albergue and great scenery. Never stop walking. Cheers Ken

This was mid to late June but it gives me reason to go back, and I actually loved the cloud too with it’s mysterious silence at times 😊 I had a very quiet time on San Salvador and only met 4 or 5 pilgrims during the entire Way. Thanks for the recommend of Invierno, it’s definitely on my wish list 😊😊😊
