Exploring Multi Timbral Synths with Ableton Live Drift
Mult-timbral synthesis is all about layering different sounds and textures together to create a desired effect. Keys with pads, varying arpeggiations, different delay subdivisions, different layers of reverbs - all of these things can be used to create rich sound design. This video covers a few of these ideas.

    Map the attacks of each synth to its own macro. Map the filter cut-offs. Also map the wet/dry of each effect. That should give you a nice palette of texture. Now save the instrument rack as a preset and whenever you need a pad, there you go. Even if you change the presets of the three layers. You still have lots of external control to create new pads quickly.

    Great video. Similar vibe to both plugins. I will say that I think I like how the Maag EQ treated the hats and other high frequencies. It sounded a little more pleasing to my ear than the stock EQ8. EQ8 felt a bit harsh (splitting hairs but that's just what I noticed.) I use EQ8 all the time, of course. I gotta dl the Maaq EQ and try this out in my own studio to be sure.

    It’s basically a common knowledge at this point that you can null test 99.9% of third-party EQs to a stock EQ in whatever DAW you’re using. You can’t do that to a hardware unit though. But buying a digital EQ is just like throwing your money out of a window.

      Yes, there's still a subtle sonic difference. The point of the video is that these plugins are tools, and for someone who cannot afford these 3rd-party plugins, that small difference should not prevent you from becoming a better mixing engineer and growing. I also detect a hint of elitism from your comment, which is not surprising either. There are many guys like you out there that just relish leaving this type of comment lol. Good luck to you brother.

      @@TomCasey Whoa, brother, no need to create a new stereotype just because I offered valid criticism. I primarily use Ableton's stock plugins and strongly advocate for learning your stock tools. But, my man, I’m assuming you know that even a bell curve behaves differently in analog-emulated EQs. With some tweaking, you can absolutely achieve what a Maag EQ or any other famous analog emulation offers. That’s exactly what I mentioned in my original comment-I can hear the difference. No need to get upset over some simple feedback. I hope I didn’t trigger your manchild behavior. ❤

    The difference between plug-ins 3rd party is that some of the plug-ins are specifically designed to do that specific task, yes, native plug-ins are very good nowadays but for you to duplicate that specific action that this specific EQ does, you will have to do extra steps.With that being said if you can afford it go for it, as long as you know that you can do the same thing with what you already have just by doing a few extra steps However, there are some plugins that don’t come w daws that are amazing and useful. . Great video.

  • @R01499-y
    @R01499-y 8 днів тому

    Brother, how can you sit there and say you don't need Plugins... you sat there A/B matching to Maag and still couldn't sound as good, I can clearly hear that it lacks top end crispiness and just doesn't sound as tight overall as the Maag did. It is also easy to EQ when you have a reference point like the Maag there where you can A/B a plugin and try to recreate it, but try and do as good of a job without having Maag available to compare your EQ to. At the end of the day it's just an EQ plugin, but why It's so good is that the configuration is musical, it's very fast to dial in and it sounds great and saves a lot of time

    • @TomCasey
      @TomCasey 8 днів тому

      I agree the Maag is very musical. As a said in the video, not owning these plugins leads people to believe they don't have enough tools to finish their mixes. Anecdotally, I've had students DESTROY their computers downloading torrents because they thought they HAD to use these 3rd party plugins. I understand this type of video triggers people, because you and I have likely spent money on these plugins and feel the need to justify them. And they are justified purchases! But again, please understand this video is meant for people that can't afford them. You can absolutely get a great mix without them and I won't back down on that stance!

      There is still a HUGE difference between these plugins, their musicality and obviously their interface. But as I said in the video, I've had students completely mess up their desktop setups downloading sketchy torrents because they thought they couldn't mix a track without a cracked version of Ozone (or something like that) Obviously, I don't think that is necessary, nor do I advocate people spending money they don't have on these things when you can just use stock DAW plugins and get the job done. Unfortunately, I see that is a very triggering stance to our consumerist hearts, but that's just my opinion!

    I've been using Massive for sub bass/808s for years. it's so clean. I will say (and I'm not sure if it's possible in drift,) I use separate oscillators for the kick attack and sustain/bass note. I also turn off the key tracking for the kick osc so the kick sound is the same no matter what note is played. Not quite the same as an 808, a little more modern. It's super clean though.

    Completely agree with the sentiment btw, but for this EQ in particular, there's a great free alternative called Luftikus (and another that I just found out about called Sky Blue EQ4) that's worth checking out. But also for this one in particular, the high-end boost isn't exactly tricky to recreate with your stock EQs. Kilohearts and Melda also have great free plugin suites that offer similar to what you'd get from a DAW's stock range, but can naturally be used across DAWs. But yeah, fully on-board with getting to know your tools and being able to get the most out of them. It's difficult when producers are targeted with message that "this one plugin will change your mix" etc. on a regular basis. And to be fair it is tricky to make your stock plugins behave like their 'characterful' counterparts when you don't have the expensive one installed to compare against. Though with many plugin companies offering demo/trial versions, perhaps that's a useful learning tool.

    Great video. From a different angle, how much time does it take to acquire this knowledge, to use these stock plugins? Comfort, laziness, instant excitement etc are bad reasons to go for the quick buy, but there must be a trade off. A hundred buks for most of us is a lot of money, so you are willing to spend time, but how about 30 (when plugins are on sale)? In that case it might be worth it.

    • @TomCasey

      I try to look at a plugin and learn what each knob does individually. Sometimes it takes me several days to really digest everything that a plugin can do. One tip that really worked for me was to turn knobs much more aggressively, so you can really hear the differences. I learned that from a professional mixing engineer who would turn the EQ knobs REALLY aggressively. He said he did that because you want to feel the difference. If you go through each parameter in the plugin that way, I think you can get your bearings and better understand what each thing does.
