Simple beat - but great and very usuefull. Thanks!
Happy to hear you think so, Thanks for the kind comment!
You're such a great teacher. Thanks for all the uploads 👍
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it a lot. If there are any subjects/ideas you’d like to see covered please let me know and I’ll make videos about them 🥁
In the recently released Can "Autobiography" All Gates Open, Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) recalls the following story: "Can was massively important for me - even though my relationship started only in 1991. I was working in London on the demos for the first Portishead album at someone's house, which had a studio in it. In the kitchen there was a radio that was always playing. It was at night when I went to the kitchen to grab a beer, and there was a track playing on the radio that immediately attracted my attention. [...] I literally thought it was the best band in the world. I honestly thought that this was the music that was made for me. So I grabbed the cassette, banged it into the tape recorder unit of the radio and started to record. The song was already about three-quarters of the way through. Mark E. Smith [of the Fall] was hosting the show on Radio 1 and he mumbled something about 'Can' and 'Vitamin C'. I didn't know whether the band was called Vitamin C and the track 'Can' - or vice versa. I had no clue. The next morning, I drove back to Bristol, where I went to this record shop and asked for a track called 'Can' by Vitamin C. The guy at the record store was a real asshole. He knew exactly what I was looking for, but he said he'd never heard of it. He was one of those typical, sort of anal record-collector guys. He owned a record shop, but he wouldn't sell me a record. But there was a customer in the store who lifted the secret. So I went over to the shelf, pulled it out, and there it was: Ege Bamyasi. I ran home, put it on and I just couldn't comprehend it. Especially when I read in the credits that this was a record from 1972." (389-90) ;) (And thank you for the video, btw, I am trying to figure out this groove but those quick kick patterns are tough!)
Such a cool excerpt, thanks for sharing!
Great lesson! Cool rudiment. It's sounds little bit like a herta.
Thanks so much! Glad you got something out of it. If you’d like a video on anything in particular please let me know!
Apart from w-a-y too much talking he didnt do my fav diddle bouncy beat! Try this folks. Do paradiddles on closed hi hats slow at first, but bring left accent onto snare-using B/D on the one. Adding 16th note doubles or triplets on bass drum gives a great funky bounce feel. Experiment on cymbal bell R/H or open hats here or there for a nice bitta spice! In your head it sounds BUM..TSHH...BUM BA BUM..TSHH..BA BUM..TSHH..BUM BA BUM TSHH..BUM BUM...TSHH..ETC. (Sorry i diddnt learn to read music but in 45 years of pub bands, and few studio demo's but hope it makes sense!)
Thanks for sharing Jim
Hell yeah. Thanks for taking the time to go over this.
You’re welcome, thanks for commenting and participating on the channel!
Thanks
You’re welcome Coopdawg
this is incredibly helpful. just yesterday i was wondering why someone hasn’t done a video like this
Thanks so much! It’s a tough groove, but if we can get this one together it’s sure to open up our playing and help our creativity on the kit.
Instead of bagging this guy , just realize he is giving up his time to give free lessons. Lets put things into perspective. Good onya lad.
Very much appreciated, thank you!
thank you this is great because vitamin c was the assignment😀
Glad you got something out of it, and thanks for the comment!
Kinda all over the place video
Thank you for your comment, we’ll be working on improving the presentation of information to make it as clear as possible
you don't know the band "CAN" ?????
I could hardly believe it myself
0:09 what a shame...
Cryin’ shame is what it is
Easy way to give us notation: Before you turn on the camera and mike, post hand-written notation on the wall to your left. Good for those of us who don't memorize easily.
Sounds like a good coordination builder. I'll ask my teacher if I should add it. Sounds pretty good too.
Yes, these are fantastic exercises, and as you mentioned, they sound pretty cool too!
This was more difficult to grasp; so I'll have to ask my teacher to check out the video and help me out.
Yes, this concept is tricky because there is mental work involved where not everything you play is written. A great way to practice though!
The band is Can and the song is Vitamin C
Yes this error has been acknowledged, however the beat explanation is accurate so I decided to leave it up
@@5-minutedrumlessons Alright, cheers.
Like it! I'll ask my teacher to do some of these.
That’s an excellent idea!
I really liked the way you broke that down... very concise simple teaching technique - I've played that beat for a while just by ear and I feel like I could improve it by slowing it down the way you began it - thank you
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking time to write such a thoughtful comment. If you’d like to see a video on something else in particular please let me know and I’ll add it to the list. Thanks again!
@@5-minutedrumlessons Cissy Strut by the Meters... Zigaboo Modeliste is one of my absolute favourites and that groove is a killer... Just noticed that you've already covered The Meters - another favourite would be 'Give it up or Turnit a loose' by James Brown - what Clyde Stubblefield does with that break is one of the funkiest... ua-cam.com/video/921kqkHOHDo/v-deo.html - the break kicks in at about 4:58
@@luisortizszimmerframe6933 Oh that sounds very cool, I’ve added the Stubblefield break to the list and am definitely looking forward to checking it out! Thanks for the suggestion!
Keep it up, man. Good stuff.
Thank you, I appreciate the support. If you’d like to see a video on something in particular please let me know!
Great stuff! Perfect, clear explanation. Never heard the song before. Just heard it on Eric on Netflix. Cheers fella.
You’re too kind, thank you so much for such a positive comment. Cheers to you!
I love your five min concept. Very accessible and appropriate to today's fast paced quick access media based world
Thank you very much! I really appreciate the positive feedback. If there is anything you’d like to see a video on please let me know.

Thank you so much for this! Very easy to understand and very good at explaining everything!
You’re very welcome, and thank you for such a positive comment!
Excellent as always.
Thank you so much!
I'd be curious to hear a fill that would fit well musically with that groove. Maybe in the distant future when I can play the groove, I'll come up with something appropriate. Perhaps I'll challenge my teacher to get me there.
I believe you can learn this groove! I’m sure your teacher would be happy to work on it with you. As for the fill that would fit well with the groove, challenge accepted!
Well explained, thanks
Thank you!
I've been learning the drums for 7 months now. I still haven't practiced any rudiments yet. I really need to start working on those.
Thank you for your comment, and welcome to the world of drumming. Rudiments require patience and practice, but are totally worth it! I offer online lessons if you’d like to try it out please feel free to contact me. Otherwise, happy drumming!
I'm confused by counting a triplet. If you count 1e &, where does the uh go and then get you to the next 1 e & ?
I usually count, 1 & a, not 1 e &, but there are different ways to count it. Just keep in mind that it is only 3 notes, so the « a » you’re referring to doesn’t exist in the triplet, it only exists in the 4 note subdivision (the sixteenth note)
hey man, nice lesson, will sub. Havent really listened or played to this song in awhile, but this video made me remember how cool it actually is, as it has some fun grooves and incorporates some groovy sincopation. if you check out a live performance youll see on that 2nd broken 16th note groove Matt Helders accentuates with some hi hat barks which really pulls the groove together. have a nice saturday night
Hey, thanks so much for the detailed comment. I’d like to hear those hi-hat barks you mentioned, I’ll go check out the live performance!
Jaki Liebezeit <3
Agreed!
Hi, newbie to the channel, just watched this frankly excellent video and have subscribed..! Really helpful content, some great well-presented ideas explained clearly and enthusiastically by someone who clearly loves their art (and isn't up themselves..!!) Very refreshing... Greetings from the UK, will definitely recommend '5 Minute Drum Lessons'. Cheers.

Haha ok you got it, they’re on the list! Thanks for the comments and participating on the channel, I appreciate it!
I can read. Could it be that with the music in front of me I could play the groove, no matter how slowly? Boy would my teacher be impressed.
Slow and steady is the way to do it!
Fantastic ! Thank you so much ! I was looking for a lesson for this incredible beat for a long time. 😃
That’s really great to hear! Thanks for the comment. If ever there’s anything you’d like a lesson on please let me know and I’ll add it to the list of upcoming videos!

Thank you! And thanks for participating on the channel!

That’s what we like to hear!
Good Idea! I'll tell my teacher that I'm doing it.
Thank you, I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that!
Muy buen vídeo Me suscribo a tu canal ya mismo. Do you give private classes? Saludos desde Toluca 👌🏼💥
Hey, gracias, thank you so much! Yes I do give private classes. If you are interested please contact me at drumsprof@gmail.com 🥁
excellent, very clearly explained: It was actually this track that I heard on the outro of a film soundtrack that made me check Can out. thank you, subscribed
Thank you for such a positive comment! I'm happy to hear you found the explanation clear. And of course, thank you for the sub!
Are those sticks flexible? Like some kind of rubber on the striking end?
Yeah they're made of plastic so do have some flex to them. They're a plastic version of the "hotrods" which are made from wood, these ones are called "blasticks". I'm sure they have lots of different names but that's how I know them. The flex in them can actually be a bit annoying, but they're cool for low volume practice and are super durable. The wooden hotrods feel a lot more like a stick and feel better in my opinion, however they break pretty quickly and are expensive! I keep a pair of each on hand so I can play the plastic ones when I'm banging away and the wooden ones for more "serious" practice. Anyway, there's your novel of an answer to a very straightforward question! Haha
@@5-minutedrumlessons Thanks man. Also, thanks for all the content, it's been really useful, as a new player it's great to see stuff broken down into digestible chunks. So many drum videos are very involved and not a lot people really break down the concepts of things very well. But I find your videos to be a really refreshing addition to the "drum instruction video zeitgeist".
@@PilafIsACookingMethod hahaha I love the drum instructional zeitgeist bit. But that's great man, if the videos are helping you out that's what it's all about. If you have any specific questions let me know and I'll do my best to answer or make a video about it!
@@5-minutedrumlessons I see you have a Moeller Method video from about a year ago...But I assume that's for matched grip...You play any traditional grip, specifically Moeller in traditional grip?
@@PilafIsACookingMethod Yes, you're correct about it being a match grip video. I do play a little traditional, definitely not to the same level, but the approach to the technique is theoretically the same, try to get one note on the way down and one (or more) on the way up. I'll do a little video discussing it! Like I said though it's not my main thing. There's one guy on youtube I think his name is Quincy Davis, he does a lot of higher level jazz stuff and plays traditional, if you can find him talking about Moeller I bet he has some good insights. Another BEAST is John Wooton, he's traditional and has the vic firth series rudiment videos that absolutely crush. If you can find him talking traditional Moeller that would be the way to go!
The band is called Can and the song Vitamin C. Can is one of the greatest krautrock band. You should add an erratum. ;)
Aw man thanks for that, something did feel off about it. I will correct what I can, but unfortunately there's nothing we can do about the idiot in the video! 😅
Doesn't Matter It's All About Your Skills And The Music 😊@@5-minutedrumlessons
Hell yeah man. Never heard of Vitamin C but this beat is very cool. I'm definitely going to learn it. Rock On 😎!!
Nice, yeah I think learning this beat can open up a lot of fresh ideas. I'm going to continue working on it as well!
