Must say it’s a pretty uncontroversial comment! Thanks for participating in the channel!
Liked and subbed, thank you for the lesson. The drum groove for Kid Charlemagne would be fun 🤔
Thank you! Cool idea too, I’ll add that groove to the list of upcoming videos.
@@5-minutedrumlessons Purdie shuffle! Awesome, thank you!
What kinda sticks/heads are you using? Thanks for the lessons theyre super helpful
Thank you for the great comment! The stick are called « Blasticks », they’re basically Hot Rods but made of plastic instead of wood. They are much more durable than Hot Rods but for me have a less natural feel/sound. Both are great for low volume practice/playing.
Hello, you broke it down well.I am interested in studying, are you in the New York City area? If not can you recommend a teacher.
Thank you for the positive feedback. I’m not in the New York area, but I do offer online lessons if that’s something that might interest you. For more information you can contact me at drumsprof@gmail.com Thanks!
Google drum schools in your area. Don’t waste time, you’re not getting younger. I regret not doing this years ago.
Nice breakdown, any chance of having a crack at the break from Give it up or turn it a loose? - there's more than one version of it, the one I'm talking about is with Bootsy Collins on Bass and James chanting clap your hands and stomp your feet before calling Clyde and Bootsy in.
Thanks for the comment! Great suggestion, I have a video about that groove, I’ll put the link here. I think the break is ever so slightly different than what I do in the video, but it’s very close. Also refers to another youtube video that has a good transcription. Let me know if you have any other ideas! ua-cam.com/video/3A9p28puVQM/v-deo.htmlsi=6_izWYssDkmggYcZ
Thanks mate , it's a great groove and you broke it down and explained it well . best jv

Did the saying "different strokes for different folks" start from drumming? 😅
Hahaha, I don’t know for sure but let’s go with that!
nice 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
Does that black thing hanging from the bottom of the crash cut back its sustain or is it just decorative?
It does cut sustain, it’s meant to be placed on top of the cymbal to reduce volume, however that kills the sound completely, and I found putting it underneath cut a lot of the sound but still at least allowed it to ring a little bit!
Like it a lot. I'll ask my teacher to help me get it.
I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to help!
Only start with that terrrible introduction, confusing CAN with a name of their song... it just means that you care a shit about it.
It was new to me man, and I left it in because there’s nothing wrong with not knowing everything, making mistakes, and learning along the way. Thanks for the comment!
sleek
Thank you! Appreciate your comments and thoughtful suggestions. I’m thinking about your Jaki idea and will get back to you about that. I think you’re onto something there though and I am also interested in digging more into his playing!
@5-minutedrumlessons ohhh, im looking forward to. But take your time, i know its hard to make such a video. I was just mentioning him, because he isnt covered anywhere...totally behins the curtains if you ask me. I like such drummers.. John Densmore, Charlie Watts, Jaki etc.. they all had small kits and jazz background and they all were so humble, but their psichadelyc approach to drumming left its mark. 😀The Doors would have never been the Doors without John... And the rolling stones had just the perfect drummer all the time. They were all so minimalistic... Densmore played his snare heads to death, never changed it, and played without bottom heads on the toms, i wonder why "concert toms" are not more popular these days...i guess everybody wants that full sound. But this is another discussion. Keep it going, you seem like a very good guy 😀
great great great... please more stuff from Jaki Liebzeit... one of the most underrated kings of the groove. get into specifics, fills, make a study on Jaki please. I have seen only short interviews of Jaki, but never someone who would in depth analyze his insane grooves. its about time. :D but only you know how much time you got for this. anyway..excellent channel and keep going. im glad i discovered you. and note... This short approach of explaining grooves with 1and2and3and4 is excellent. i like you are going very slow.. i always start with 60 or even 40 bpm on complicated grooves, first ofcourse without metronome. one short story: Jaki was a jazz drummer and after one gig a listener come to him, and Jaki thought he was on MDMA od some hard stuff drugs.. and he said to him: "Jaki, you need to play monotonous!". Jaki first thought what the f... is this guy telling me, but later on he more and more started to think about what the guy said to him and started simplifying things, even to the point where in the late years he discarded the bass drum, and had a more percussionist approach. His beats breathe like crazy and the jazz background is clearly felt when he plays a groove, no mather how simple. RIP JAKI!
Nice job, man.
Thank you! I really appreciate the comment 🥁
ghostly
Yeeeeah
Great video again. I wish I could find those particular drum sticks but the closest thing I can find are from Meinl and I don’t think that them cause they lack the metal ferrule.
Thank you! For the sticks, honestly I like the ones I have but the metal part kind of comes loose a little bit and at the end of the day you might be able to find something more ideal. If you start with something similar and go from there I’m sure you’ll find something that suits you!
these videos are sick great help!
Thank you so much, glad to hear you’re getting something out of the videos, and I really appreciate the positive feedback!

Awesome, thanks for the great comment!
Makes me want an hour's worth
I’ll keep ‘em coming the best I can!
Thanks. What sticks are you using there?
Hi, thank you for the comment and question. Those are a plastic version of the wooden « hotrods », known as « blasticks », those are just the brand name names for them though, many different companies make a similar product. It’s basically several small pieces of wood, or as in this example plastic, held together with either tape or an adjustable plastic band. They are good for quieter practice or playing. I tend to prefer the wooden ones but they are expensive and start to deteriorate quickly, so I have a plastic pair as backup because for better for for worse, they’ll last forever!
@@5-minutedrumlessons Thanks for taking the time to reply. Great info. Love all your videos. Currently trying to figure out Vitamin C 😮
@@PeterG-ej5ly Thank you so much! I really appreciate the positive feedback. The Vitamin C groove is a doozie, but learning it will definitely help us open up our playing and free up our coordination to come up with our own grooves and ideas influenced by the ideas in that beat!
Is there a video for the accent pattern you’re playing?
Can you do mushroom by can?
What kind, and/or brand drumsticks are you using in this video?

In the recently released Can "Autobiography" All Gates Open, Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) recalls the following story: "Can was massively important for me - even though my relationship started only in 1991. I was working in London on the demos for the first Portishead album at someone's house, which had a studio in it. In the kitchen there was a radio that was always playing. It was at night when I went to the kitchen to grab a beer, and there was a track playing on the radio that immediately attracted my attention. [...] I literally thought it was the best band in the world. I honestly thought that this was the music that was made for me. So I grabbed the cassette, banged it into the tape recorder unit of the radio and started to record. The song was already about three-quarters of the way through. Mark E. Smith [of the Fall] was hosting the show on Radio 1 and he mumbled something about 'Can' and 'Vitamin C'. I didn't know whether the band was called Vitamin C and the track 'Can' - or vice versa. I had no clue. The next morning, I drove back to Bristol, where I went to this record shop and asked for a track called 'Can' by Vitamin C. The guy at the record store was a real asshole. He knew exactly what I was looking for, but he said he'd never heard of it. He was one of those typical, sort of anal record-collector guys. He owned a record shop, but he wouldn't sell me a record. But there was a customer in the store who lifted the secret. So I went over to the shelf, pulled it out, and there it was: Ege Bamyasi. I ran home, put it on and I just couldn't comprehend it. Especially when I read in the credits that this was a record from 1972." (389-90) ;) (And thank you for the video, btw, I am trying to figure out this groove but those quick kick patterns are tough!)
Such a cool excerpt, thanks for sharing!
Just bought some roland td-9s last week, never played before but determined to learn this groove 👌
Great lesson! Cool rudiment. It's sounds little bit like a herta.
Thanks so much! Glad you got something out of it. If you’d like a video on anything in particular please let me know!
Apart from w-a-y too much talking he didnt do my fav diddle bouncy beat! Try this folks. Do paradiddles on closed hi hats slow at first, but bring left accent onto snare-using B/D on the one. Adding 16th note doubles or triplets on bass drum gives a great funky bounce feel. Experiment on cymbal bell R/H or open hats here or there for a nice bitta spice! In your head it sounds BUM..TSHH...BUM BA BUM..TSHH..BA BUM..TSHH..BUM BA BUM TSHH..BUM BUM...TSHH..ETC. (Sorry i diddnt learn to read music but in 45 years of pub bands, and few studio demo's but hope it makes sense!)
Thanks for sharing Jim
Hell yeah. Thanks for taking the time to go over this.
You’re welcome, thanks for commenting and participating on the channel!
Thanks
You’re welcome Coopdawg
this is incredibly helpful. just yesterday i was wondering why someone hasn’t done a video like this
Thanks so much! It’s a tough groove, but if we can get this one together it’s sure to open up our playing and help our creativity on the kit.
Instead of bagging this guy , just realize he is giving up his time to give free lessons. Lets put things into perspective. Good onya lad.
Very much appreciated, thank you!
