VC 2022 - Episode 21: Box of Singles 4
Hi Steve. I cannot remember anyone showing any Pete Sinfield albums. I have the same "still" release as you do. Dexter's "Go" is one of my all time favorite jazz albums. So good. So so good. <> I like everything that I have heard from Dolphy. Some of it can get a little crazy or too many notes like you stated. It took me some time to get into free jazz. But now I really dig it. You showed so many great albums Steve. Outstanding December for you and your vinyl finds~ Rob/Boston
Happy New Year, Rob. I hope that 2025 will see me dig deeper into jazz music. As long I do not get too ambitious with it.
Hello Steve; Nektar prog band, have all the recordings. Chris Squire's Fish Out Of Water very good solo release. Ian Hunter talented guitarist both with Mott & solo. Eric Dolphy & Dexter Gordon uptempo Jazz. Motörhead & GirlSchool on the same record. George Harrison's Best of the hits. Some excellent December finds. Looking forward to 2025. Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Hi both, I hope 2025 will be as fruitful.
Why am I not surprised that Bill Bruford is on Chris Squire’s album. Elmer Gantry’s Velvet Opera is on my want list. I’ve never seen those Ian Hunter records. Johnny Depp being on the album is a bit of a turn off. It may be dumb but I’m not a big fan of actors playing music or musicians acting. There are a very few exceptions. I have that Magazine album but it didn’t click with me. I love Magazine’s debut. I will pull out the Magazine and give it a spin. I got into Jazz in the early to mid 70s. I lost interest by 77 or 78. I’ve bought a few Jazz albums the past five years but have now decided that I’m most likely done with Jazz.
Hi Rich, I understand that actors and musicians swapping roles can put you off. I don't know many, if any, who have pulled it off. Have a Happy New Year
Hi Steve. I totally agree that Ian Hunter is a national treasure. It’s definitely about time that he was recognised as such. Those jazz reissues sound great. Although the Eric Dolphy album is far too busy for me too. 👍👍
Happy new year to you. Nice pick ups Steve. I’ve almost stopped buying any more records as I just don’t listen to them enough even though I’m retired. Saved myself a fortune. Would like that Nektar one though. Cheers fella, Chris
Happy New Year, Chris. I say that every year, Chris. My plans for decluttering are all up in the air at this moment. The Nektar album is well worth seeking out.
Happy new year Steve. Some nice finds. Ian Hunter is certainly impressive with his longevity. I have Still, i actually played it recently after his passing..it's ok, not a classic. I need more Magazine, i love the debut. Have you seen the Sparks film?. I've tried many times with Out To Lunch, but to no avail. I wish i still had that St Valentines Day Massacre EP..i played that to death back in the day. All the best Steve.
Happy New Year to you, too, Rob. I need to catch up on a lot of the 80s and 90s Ian Hunter output. I have yet to see the Sparks film. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
I bought The Mission when it came out. It didn’t do much for me. I listened to it earlier in the year with the possibility of purging it. I was surprised how much I liked it.
They were a surprisingly popular. I saw them a couple of years ago and went down very well. Have a Happy New Year.
Hi Steve. Funky Moped was a great choice. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone show Operation Mindcrime before. That’s a great shout! Cheers!
Hello Steve; Good to have a profession that helps others in need who have experienced personal problems & need solid helpful encouragement. Liked all your choices for the Sad Lonely Person Vinyl Tag. Each of the chosen selections were well explained & defined. Very good vinyl tag response. Wishing you a wonderful New Year in 2025. All the best!! Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Thank you. I wish you both a Happy New Year
A thoughtful response to this Tag. Definitely a good choice with Midnight Cowboy. John Barry was a master. Also good to hear Jasper Carrot mentioned. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2025. Take care, John.
Thanks, John. I thought mentioning Jasper Carrott might be taking the mick, but it seems to have gone down well. Have a Happy New Year. Steve
Great to see Funky Moped mentioned Steve..I worked at Notcutts in the early 90s and Jasper used to come in with his manager..and he was a reet miserable sad bast***!!. Poignant start to this video, and it sounds like your line of work is a very worthy profession, my brother works in mental health so what you said definitely struck home.. all i can say is you're a great guy Steve and your videos always make me smile, so here's to you having a great 2025..and we must meet up and have a pint sometime.
Thanks, Rob. Hopefully, we will get the chance to meet up in 2025. If you are ever in the Sutton Coldfield area on a Saturday afternoon, pop into Psychotron Records. I'm normally in there. Have a happy new year.
I'll get round to doing this next year lol. The controversy I find bewildering like what we spoke about the other day. I'm rather ploughing through some videos before making any this week. Happy Christmas to you I hope the veggie alternatives are up to scratch. We are dabbling this year with similar. It'll all be over in approximately 48 hours 😅
Thanks Martin, it was good speaking to you on Monday. I hope you enjoyed a good Christmas. Hopefully we will meet up in 2025.
Hey Steve, lovely and thoughtful bunch of answers. Thanks for the shout out! I will get the 2025 tag out earlier than December 2025!
Hi Graeme, it was good to speak to you last night. Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to seeing your 2025 tag response.
Nice finds Steve. I'm definitely going to investigate Archive. I heard about it years ago from Big Star 1000 I think but haven't heard it yet. Have a good Christmas, Dale
Hi Dale. They are worth checking out. You also have a good Christmas.
Tinawaren yes i daw them live once for free. Sometimes you just need music so far away from anything else to relax i think i know what you mean. Quadrophenia great film but pretty depressing by the end.
It was good to see you, Martin. Thank you for commenting on my videos. Have a Merry Christmas.
Hello Steve; Some every good vinyl finds, June - November. Starting with Miles Davis, Rufus w/ Chaka, Quadrophenia, Blue Mink, Archive looks interesting, worth checking out. Wishing you a wonderful, safe, healthy, Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. 🙋Tina &🙋♂ Pat!!~
Thank you both for continuously watching and commenting on my videos. Have a Merry Christmas 🎁
Hi Steve. I left a comment on this video a while ago but it looks like it hasn't been published. This has been happening a fair bit to me lately, very annoying. Let's wait and see if the other one pops up - if not I'll have to try and remember what I said.
Doesn't look like it's going to appear. Nice Neu! find, I have their debut but have never seen any of their other records. Never heard Yellow Magic Orchestra. Archive sound great, will try and stream.
Hi James, hope you are doing well. Archive are worth checking out. Thank you for sticking with me during 2024. Have a great Christmas 🎁
Hey, Steve. Nice video. A lorra lorra rock. Hed
Cheers Hedley, indeed all I wanna do is rock.
Good point on Nugent , he does eat the whole animal Great choice of the Sex Pistols, I wish I had those singles Steve, very nice to have
Hi Steve, finding a copy of Anarchy in the UK was one of my best finds.
Good response Steve. Funnily enough for best sounding drums I'd probably go for The Original Soundtrack. On Blackmail in particular they sound amazing. For me the Beatles/Stones question doesn't compute at all, no comparison. But you're right, it's a good job the Beatles finished and didn't end up on the touring carnival circuit. The weed question is a strange one, i.e. assuming everyone smokes it.
Hi James, I had doubts about putting the Beatles ahead of the Stones, but those quickly passed. So, I am not alone about weed passing me by. Have a good weekend.
Hi Steve, great to see you still making videos. Great response to the Vinyl Tag. I loved your weed story. There’s something to be said about growing up a little naive. I agree with your philosophy on reincarnation, you might as well try the other side. Bon Scott was a mad hatter, so I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Happy Holidays 🎅🏼
Thank you Edwin, for putting together the vinyl tag. It was fun to complete. You also have a great Christmas.
Hello Steve; The 2025 Vinyl Tag, ahead of schedule. Why wait for the new year. Liked all your choices & corresponding response for each LP. Always a good choice with Mott. The Beatles & Rolling Stones two of the best bands ever. The Damned & Sex Pistols great punk bands. Good video, take care. Tina & Pat!~
Hi, I am glad you enjoyed the video. It was fun to put together.
Always happy seeing Kimono My House shown..great choice. Ian Hunter was the ' glue' for Mott, once he left it all fell to pieces. The Original Soundtrack , Melt, Jeff Lynne..Beatles for the win. Ah, those hedonistic days when i was 16 /17 hanging round city road in Edgbaston with the sickly aroma of something aromatic wafting in the wind, and Hawkwind blaring out from a flat window. It's been many years since visiting The Diskery..is it still going?. Bon Scott was one of those rock n rollers that lived several lifetimes in one short life. I find it fascinating that lyrics and music can have such a profound effect on such a young life, but clearly it did for so many of us. Great response Steve, and i appreciate the shout out.
Hi Rob, The Diskery is still going strong. It moved to Bristol Road two years ago, not far from the old place.
This is the tag that created a bizarre response from Rob W. How very strange. Few too many sherbets possibly. Not sure I will do this but enjoyed yours Steve. Merry Christmas fella.
Hi Chris, I thought that as well. Have a good Chrismas yourself.
Good thoughtful picks Steve. I'm probably going to wait until New Year's day so I don't have to go for a walk...cheers Dale
Hi Dale, I initially thought about doing it in the new year. Now, to clean my boots.
Enjoyed your tag. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Steve, enjoyed your tag, yes it’s a bit early but what the hell. I will hopefully get round to it in the new year, problem with being a chef it gets very busy for me in December 😅.
Thank you. It will soon be January.
Great music for the Tag Steve...nice to see different items 👍
Thank you John
Hi Steve. The Femmes, Butterfield, Affinity & Young are terrific finds. Merry Christmas! Cheers, Jeff
Thanks Jeff, I wish you and your family a great Christmas
fairport convention,in the early days did a cover version of east-west. discus?
Great selection Steve. I somehow lost my copy of that Violent Femmes debut many years ago, then Steve Carlson was kind enough to send me a reissue. Later on I picked up an original copy of their second album (in Oxfam I think!) - the only copy I've ever seen. Very nice Syd two-for, I would grab that if I saw it as I don't have his second album on vinyl (got the first on reissue). Pleased you enjoyed Diamond Head, I re-listened to that not so long ago and I always enjoy it. There's another Manzanera/Whetton record lurking in the boxes down at Heightside Records stand on the Saturday market, but I keep resisting it for some reason. 'Tonight's the Night' is a hard record to find, you've done well there, £3.99 from HMV. 🤣Have a good week, James
Btw, royal family at rock gigs - the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester attended one of ELO's Wembley Arena shows in '78!
Hi James, apart from the debut I do not know any other Violent Femmes albums. There are other Manzanera’s albums in my local shop. I will have to check them out.
A real doh moment James. I have seen the video. Tony Curtis introduced the band. Enjoy your week.
Hey there Steve. Nice to see you again. I have to agree with you on Butterfield's "East West". I really like Bloomfield's playing on that album. They even do a good cover of one of the Monkees/Nesmith songs. Can't say that I have heard Beggar's Opera". But I will listen to them now. Solid part three S~ Rob/Boston
Thanks Rob, have a great week.
Some nice albums and big hitters there Steve. Love a toofa and not seen that Barrett one before. Affinity is a great album. Cheers Dale
Cheers Dale, I hope everything is good with you.
A few really nice records there Steve..the Syd Barrett ' toofa' was a good pick up..although i'm going to disagree with you here as I personally prefer Barrett to The Madcap Laughs..but they're both fabulous. I watched a video recently interviewing the drummer on those Barrett sessions and he said that they basically played along to Syds' guitar, live in the studio as getting him to lay down overdubs was virtually impossible. Thanks for the shout out, and you're right, i have shown Affinity on FB. Hope that sniffle doesn't blow up into a full cold bug!.
Hi Rob, I am feeling better today. What you say about the Syd Barrett sessions is interesting. I always got the impression that those albums were hard work to complete.
Hello Steve; Some wonderful vinyl finds with Amon Duul, Syd Barrett, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Status Quo, Steve Wonder. To name a few. Good titles to add into the collection. Be well, Take care, Tina & Pat!!~
Thank you both, I hope everything is good.
Great batch of records Steve. Still looking for a copy of Affinity and Beggars Opera. Good to see you back. Cheers.
Thank you. I was lucky to find them.
Nice he gave away the Hungarian ones I think they'd be interesting irrespective of not understanding the words.
Hi Martin, I have other Eastern European prog albums in the collection. They are an interesting listen.
Wow ,Piramis...!👍
Thank you for taking time to watch my video.
I was only commenting the other day to another VCer about Free and my thoughts echo yours completely Steve..simplicity in form but huge on atmosphere and space. Completely agree with 10cc, the loss of Godley and Creme was immense for them and they were never the same again. Interesting about the exclamation mark as a nod to Neu!..i live and learn.. Can't argue with XTC and Roxy..i was late to the party with regard to the former. Roy Wood is a bit of a treasure isn't he..hugely talented and should have had world dominantion! Sometimes i think The Who are the greatest rock band this country ever produced..as good as Zeppelin are and the Stones etc..i find myself listening to The Who the most. Slade...6 UK no 1 singles don't lie.. Mott were immense..my brother was a huge fan and those 2 albums Mott and The Hoople were played to death back in the 70s and i have grest memories of hearing my brother bladting them out. Enjoyed the video Steve.
Apologies for the late reply, Rob. I am glad you enjoyed my choices.
Room sounds interesting, I agree Akarma has some great titles. I need that first Dukes album, I love Psonic Sunspot. That last Spirogyra album is fantastic. I love Old Boot Wine and particularly the final song In The Western World.. Barbara's vocals are wonderful. Great finds!.
Thanks, Rob, I always have a soft spot early 70s prog.
Nice XTC albums. Bill Withers Menagerie is on my wants list..been listening to him recently, I love his voice and the vibe of his songs.
Holy Smokes, you picked up a lot of gold that I would have grabbed or had already. Still looking for that Kansas album. It should be common but it is eluding me The Scott Heron album is wonderful. That was a lot of great records Steve. Hungarian Prog…hmmm
Thanks Steve. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. I'll eat my goulash while listening to my Hungarian prog.
Hi Steve, I gave Kings X a good go in the early 90s, but I could never really work out what they were trying to be. I wonder if they were trying to be too many things at once. Room look interesting. Never heard of them before now. I've also been after that live Allman Bros album. It has such a good reputation. I'm actually afraid of being disappointed when I do finally land a copy. Impressed you grabbed that Man album while you could. Enjoyed the description of them being 2nd Division Prog. I didn't include them on my 20 Great British Prog Bands list. Only 1st Division Prog bands made it on. LOL
Hi John, you could be right about King's X. They were different from the perceived norm then. 2nd Division prog was the first thing that came into my head.
Hello Steve; Good pick ups with John Lee Hooker, Dukes of the Stratosphere, early Pink Floyd parody of the Barrett years, Jazz with Girl Scott- Heron, Sixties Rock Compilation, Allman Brothers at the Fillmore & Eat A Peach, Man, will check out Electric Cake Salad, some very nice prog rock finds. Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Thanks both, hope you are keeping well.
A good proggy haul Steve. I still don't think I've heard anything by Spyro Gyra. I don't have anything by the Alman Brothers and have still never heard their live album. Still never heard Man. My collection is still mainly gaps.
Thanks James. I did not realise how proggy it was until you pointed it out. There is still plenty of gaps in my collection that need filling.
Hey, Steve. What is it about Italian and Spanish labels reissuing all these albums? Why on earth aren't they being reissued by UK or US labels? I wonder if it's a rights issue, or is there a large demand from those countries for those records? I've got quite a few rare country rock/folk records on European labels. The US cares not a jot for their musical heritage. I quite like Spirogyra, so they can't be too proggy 😉 I don't own anything by them, although I do have some albums digitally. Hed
Hi Hedley, I know what you mean. Prog is big in Italy, and Van Der Graaf Generator was afforded a Beatle-like status there. However, Akarma has reissued Big Star albums.
Hi Steve. Some nice finds I would be very happy to pick up. I need to fill some gaps in my XTC collection and the two you showed are the ones I’m after. Soft Machine 4 is a favourite of mine, Wyatt’s last with them before his (mostly) brilliant solo albums. Hope you are keeping well. Take care, John.
Hi John, I have some more finds to show. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Fantastic finds Steve. I really liked the Kossof album when I heard it for the first time. Totally unexpected. Excellent pickups. I will be back to watch part two when you post it~ Rob/Boston
Thanks Rob, hopefully it will be early next week.
I had a copy of that Paul Kossoff album once. I gave it away as VCLT to someone that had been very generous in sending my some great records. My only regret is that I didn't record it on a cassette before I sent it. Ian Gillan Band. I've got the albums that came out after that one, called Scarabus. It's slightly progy. Ah ha, you've got it too I see. By the way Steve, I spotted the hidden link there, how you went from talking about Dave Murray from Iron Maiden getting hold of Kossoff's guitar ...before moving nicely onto the Ian Gillan Band that ended when Ian Gillan left to form the band 'Gillan' that featured an other future Iron Maiden guitarist, Janick Gers. Do I win £5?
Hi John, the answer is no, but I like your thinking.
Hello Steve; XTC's Mummer & Big Express, decent LP's. Paul Kossoff Back Street Crawler, the LP that became a band, excellent solo debut. Ian Gillan Band, solo career following his Purple days. Gary Moore Pre Blues era. Jimi Hendrix Radio One, good on air performances. The Byrds classic debut Mr. Tambourine Man. Deep Purple jamming live Stockholm. Soft Machine 4, the last with Robert before his accident. Be Well, Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Thanks both for continually supporting me.
