Thanks for the video, helpful advice and tips.
Sorry, byt these hybrids dont work. Just buy normal hydraulic brakes and enjoy riding. Period.
And what information are you basing your quite clear opinion on? First hand experience, or just personal bias? Have you actually ever used any of the versions like this?
@@WattOnWheels Im racing on bike for about 16 yrs. I tried almost all types of brakes - Giant MPH, Avid BB5, Shimano BR-M465, BR-M545, M535, M660, Ultegra, GRX, Magura, TRP Spyre, Tektro IO, Aquila, Auriga - the best option is hydraulic - minimum maintance, purchase cost also acceptable (MT200 by Shimano are the best cheap option instead of mechanical). Recently I changed oil in my 14-old SLX - no wire, no housing. I only change pads, adjust once in 2 years and that's it. On my current MTB bike on 26" I have aprox. 70 kkm mileage (kmage), so I know what is 2+2.
@jakub_qba So you are confirming that you have never used these. Thanks. I never once nor has anyone else claimed these are better. Where I did say the excel at is routing and maintenance on gravel/pack bikes for touring. If you actually watch the video instead of jumping to a conclusion, you would find these things out.
Do you think Hybrid system has the same power of Hydraulic? Great Video Pal!!!!
Short answer, no. Especially considering that a lot of hydro systems are multiple piston calipers now. But it can have its advantages in regards to cable routing and maintenance.
@@axvlife thanks!!!! very kind of you!!!! Enjoy your ride!!!!
Great video!
Finally Got the expert...haha
Enjoy. It will work well for you. Explore the different settings and see what works best. Too many people just set the fork as other have said without seeing how it feels for them.
Hello.. Do i have to put the extra spacers and the level spacer also? Or i have to choose one of them?
@@georgedelis2278 if you are using the newer style you still need the main top bushing then you can add and subtract the 5mm bushing rings below. My Vario in this video is an earlier version that used 1 stepped bushing, instead of having multiple solid bushings.
@@WattOnWheels when you made the video you had also the 6 5mm bushings plus the new style bush? Or you had only the new style ring?
@@georgedelis2278 if you go to 9:43 in the video. You can see that I had the older Stepped version that used a single bushing adapter. The multiple 5mm travel adjuster version was a version after mine.
@@WattOnWheels hmm ok..mine came with both options.. I have to choose one of them or its possible to put both?
Thanks a lot for this great overview and also showing how to install!

I just bought a dirt jumper and I'm coming from BMX And I need some information I have the expert shocks and it's been awhile since I've used them I need to know the lever on the bottom and how to use the top part and make sure I put the bolts on right in the front
@@realmejeremy ok. Top knob is the compression knob. This controls how much damping resistance there can be when you got a bump/land a jump. Counter clockwise/left turn opens the compression and makes it softer. Clockwise/right turn adds resistance. This makes it harder to compress. All the way to the right activates the lockout valve. The fork will feel almost like a rigid fork. Except if you case a landing or hit hard, it will allow the dork to compress. The knob on the bottom of the left leg is the rebound damping. This is how fast the fork pushes back to full length. As far as the bolts on the axle, push the axle in them just slightly tighten the pinch bolts. Many many people crank these down and break the fork tab. It just needs to be snug enough that the axle doesn't slide out. It's a hex axle, it won't spin otherwise.
@@WattOnWheels thank you so much I really appreciate that
@@WattOnWheels oh wow I didn't know that about the pinch bolts, Are you talking about those two hex on each side? I think I over tightened them
@@realmejeremy yes. On each leg there will be two Allen head bolts that pinch pressure onto the axle. They just need to be snug. Do not tighten so that the gap closes all the way. You will break them.
Dont use XT hubs. I made the mistake. Unless you like creaking and howling.
How long did you use the hub before you had an issue?
How can you reduce the travel on the SDG Tellis V1?
@@edmundoayala8912 that was not an option on the V1 posts. That was a new feature for the V2.
Can i just use my lever i have now it’s a sram level
@@MTBDarby not with this style. SRAM Level is a hydraulic brake. This set up uses a cable system.
Whats the bottom bracket size in these.
Standard 73mm thread in.
On my ride today, my post quit working. Would not stay up. I pulled the post and found the green cap on the end had unthreaded itself and I could see the inner shaft. Put it back together and it works. Trying to find out if this is a deeper problem or if it is worth rebuilding. The threads were not stripped on the green plastic part. Have you seen this happen before? I did not see a set screw to prevent it from twisting loose, bike is 2 years old, a lot of hard riding, already exploded the headset.
I have not heard of this issue. If the green actuator comes undone or loosens it can not engage the release button on the cylinder. I am wondering if it was just not screwed in tightly from the factory, or if the seatpost get raised or twisted during transport or maintenance.
I’ve been there once on my mountain bike and the jumps is small
Post up your video with you sending it and tag me.
Nice jumps, but try to build some that are bigger

Thanks for a nice review! 😀 One question. So far, I have been wary of both mechanical disc brakes but also this hybrid model, since I haven't tried any disc brake bike which didn't have a fully hydraulic brake system, which, when I brake hard, I will feel the point where the brake starts to lock up the wheel. I really like being able to feel this point clearly, especially when I’m on slippery surfaces and in traffic.. I feel like it's almost a kind of ABS.. So, my question to you: How well do these hy/rd brakes let you know when they are about to lock up the wheel compared to a fully hydraulic system? And does it make a big difference whether you are using compressionless cable housing or not?
Ok so both of the answers to your questions tie in together. The compressionless housing is the key. With it you have a great feel of how the brake is doing regarding bite point and strength. With classic cables it is mushy and is not consistent feeling between light and hard braking. Having said that, time has passed since I made this video. Even the budget brake models are doing very well now. The costs are reasonable and they work well. So it really is up to the application to determine which will work best for you.
@@axvlife Thanks a lot! 👍🏻
Currently, there are some easier options available without all the drilling and messing around. NC-17 sold a complete kit with top and bottom plates. No Frame drilling is needed. Sixpack components sell a top plate as well that works seamlessly with narrow stems. Both of them are way cheaper compared to the whole Title system.
Ya. its about time that brands got on board that mtb/slope riders can use this type of tool/part. Previously it was the super expensive hydro gryo that never work for that long, or some of the street specific frames that had prewelded gyro tabs like the bmx bike have had.
Hell yeah! Great video, Subscribed.💪🏽
Thank you!! Im glad that you enjoyed it. Are you using any inserts currently?
i wonder why lever feel is the same on my both levers front and rear equipped with trp hyrds and regular brake housings on my road bike. it is more than x2 difference in its' length
I just bought 2 Maxxi Hookworm for street and commuting. Never new these were out. these are what I want!
If you are doing a lot of commuting, the hookworms are a good call. Over broken pavement and even glass, they will be durable. They are heavy but durable. These are definitely on the performance side of things. Thinner and lighter to be faster but odds are they will cut and puncture more easily.
@@WattOnWheels In canada here i can't find anything but the heavy ones?
Hookworms are available in a standard weight (for 26", anyway: 26x2.5", IIRC); Lighter fare could be Holy Rollers: 26x2.2" or 26x2.4". All three are great; If you want progressively lighter and less burly: 2.4 & 2.2 HR. IME Holy Roller has better puncture resistance from the thicker knobs, but that could well be circumstantial. Anyway-! Happy riding- Stay safe.
Excelent tutorial. By the way this SDG are the same as Cannondale DownLow droppers. So exactly same process and spares. Already checked cause i've serviced both of them.
Aye! Thank you! Good to know about the C-Dale droppers. Hopefully this tip helps even more people out.
I use my 26 mtb as a tourer, mostly on roads. I've been using Conti Speed Kings but theyre discontinued now. I've ordered a set of Conti Contact Urban tyres as a stop-gap but they are wired and therefore heavier. Im not sure i can get a set of 2.3" tyres on my bike but I've ordered some of these Michelins anyway. They look great, and they're light enough. Incidentally, I always lined my Speed Kings with Panaracer Flataway which added almost nothing to their weight and left them as flexible as ever. I'll do the same with the Michelins but ill wait and see if it's necessary for the new Contis.
Sounds like a plan. Let me know how it goes.
Hands down, a really good review! No nonsense, straight to the point, talked about every important aspect of those brakes. I'd wish more reviews were like this. Greetings from Germany.
Danke!!! I am glad you appreciated it.
Nice review
Thank you!!
Big thanks for the video 👍 really helpful and hopefully my service kit arrives in post tomorrow so that I can re-build mine 👍👍👍👍
Awesome. Glad I could help. Take your time and don't force anything and it will all go smooth.
Trp are far more superior than the el cheap origin...field maintenance, stopping power and heat distribution...try and fix a hydro cable in the middle of the forest.....even if the fluid runs out you can still use the brakes,...no air bubbles no sponginess ....and you can't compare the weight ....
Great channel, just subbed. I can see that you take time to answer questions. That's awesome.

@@WattOnWheels Well. here's a question for you. I'm getting old (55) but I been an athlete all my life. HOWEVER, I put on some LBS so I'm 6'1 245, not a tiny person. Still, I have pretty good cardio and reflexes. I like to do technical trails and single track with some small jumps. I wonder if the expert would be a good choice for a guy like me over something like an XC fork like a Markhor or one of the Rockshocks??? Thanks in advance!!
@@obxarms7685 what type of bike do you have ? The Expert is for 26 in wheels only.
@@WattOnWheels It's an old GT with 26" wheels and a 1-1/8 head tube. When it came out it was a higher end model, of course that was over 20 years ago. haha
@@obxarms7685 so, the expert will and can work as a trail fork. When I was till racing I would routinely ride my slopestyle/4x bike on regular trails alot. The damper has the adjustment range needed. It will ha e a bit stiffer compression tune but that's not really a factor when at our bodyweights. Now, finding and expert fork with a straight steer tube is going to be a bit trickier. They are out there just hard to find.
Thanks for the in depth review. Which Ergon saddle is that?
I'll have to go back and see what's on their. I swapped a few around trying them out. I do believe that's the Ergon SR Pro. I also have the SM model that I swap around with different bar set ups.

Hello, I just wanna know if I can do it with a 60 PSI on both of my wheel?! I don't wanna go lower than 50 PSI to be honest. I'm using my bike for "bike to work" purposes and I don't like low PSI. My healthy range is between 50 to 60 PSI.
Ya that shouldn't be a problem. At that pressure the foam will be more compressed so the puncture protection depth will be a little less. If running that high of pressure it is recommended to let the air out and let the foam recover sometimes.
I’m happy to have found this, I was planning on checking SKN out right when Covid came around. I always wanted to train Muay Thai! Thank you for the content!
Awesome man. Glad it could help you. It's a great place ran by awesome people. Every main teacher has spent time (multiple times) in Thailand living their. They really know their stuff.
Great review.i really wanted a stage evo, but got a great deal on a five evo. I still can't believe how fast and light it is. I came from a whyte t130 which was amazing .but the orange is in another league
I agree. I could see the 5evo being a bit more rowdy than the Stage Evo, but I don't think anyone is going to go wrong with either one. I may actually be going back to one for my personal ride.
I love these brakes, got them on my cx/road bike. The power is fantastic and the fit and forget aspect is so much nicer than mechanical brakes. Only issue i found was you have to keep on top of maintenance to avoid lazy pistons. I noticed one piston getting slower and then it stopped on an endurance race, not an issue you can fix on the go so had to manage without the brake. Just need to keep the seals lubricated, oil internally clean too and they seem happy enough.
Good tip for everyone. Thank you.
@@WattOnWheels super easy doing the fluid changes, did mine yesterday following the TRP youtube video and it was hassle free with the right kit, working like a dream now. It even corrected the tolerance issue i noticed with the lockout for the actuator arm, turns out it was a fluid shortage. Good intro to looking after regular hydraulic systems i think.
Mineral oil brakes are waaaaay better. Who wants to deal with stupid a** DOT fluid? Screw all that nonsense.
I know this is an old video but I just had one of these installed in my rear wheel and I am liking the feel and the added confidence I have when plowing through rock gardens and such...anyway, I think on my last ride, the psi was too low and I could hear the insert squishing around a bit. Weird but everything was fine and I inflated back to normal when I got home. Now, strangely, when I loosen the valve core, no air comes out at all. I even removed the entire valve from the base and still no air escapes! Could the insert have moved in such a way that it's now blocking the air passage entirely? Any ideas before I dismantle the whole thing and start over? BTW, why no longer using them?
Just to be sure, you are using the tubed version or the tubeless version? If the pressure was too low there is a chance the tube and insert may have moved, or there just isn't any air in the tube at all. Did you try just adding some air first?
@@WattOnWheels Hey, thanks for the response. Yeah, the tubeless version. Air can be added without issue but something must have moved a bit. When I remove the valve core, I can push in a q-tip and release air that way. I guess the important thing is that I can add air. Weird problem but I guess I can live with it until I decide to take off the tire and see what's going on (or have the bike shop do it, lol!). Thanks again!
@@turntabillist ok. Ya if a little flap of the insert is covering the valve it can block air escaping. Sometimes the inserts need trimmed a little before putting them in depending on the tire and rim combo used.
@@WattOnWheels Good to know, thanks for the tip. That's probably exactly what's happening. Next time I have the tire off, I'll cut the insert a bit around the valve area.
Awesome, thanks!
Glad it could help you!
@@WattOnWheels I simply had not realised it it THAT simple :D I do have this post and I need to bump it from 150mm up a bit
