How To Chase Your Dreams In Your 20s
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both. ”

Personal Notes: This was a new type of video for me. Generally I explore my research around the aspects of my life that I want to improve and share my learnings. In this video, I looked backwards and shared what I learned over the last ten years and shared it with the internet. Truthfully, the former is more fun for me, so I expect to go back to that format in the future. But this was still a great experience for me to look back on the years and compile what I learned. Thanks for watching.

So in this video, I'm going back to flight school, but this time I'll be equipped with new techniques to overcome pressure. I ho...

How To Make The Next 100 Days the Best Of Your Life
Переглядів 224 тис.Рік тому
A friend recently asked me what I would do if I wanted to make the next 100 days the best of my life. At first I rattled off a few ideas. "Meditate, eat better, pay off debt." But in reality, I had tried doing all of those things at times but never actually stuck to them long-term. So I went on a soul searching mission to figure out why I was so unsuccessful in building good habits in the past ...

      1. Platonic - Marisa Franco was the most actionable, i.e. go to recurring events. It works. 2. The first few chapters of The Charisma Formula was the most mind expanding to me. You don't need to read the whole book. Just the few chapters covers it all.

    Joel At the start of my career/job at small-medium scale company after completing my internship should i aspire to be a Generalist or a Specialist at 1 skill or something like that ? What works the best to achieve success at faster pace in terms of making money.. I work as a Hvac design engineer for commercial air conditioning projects in Aec construction industry. Usually, highly specialized technical skills tend to lead to the highest incomes. But that takes time. There is nothing wrong with starting out with a general, open mind and specializing as you learn more and more what you like, what you are good at, and what people want to pay you a lot of money to do.

Also i haven't done any volunteer job or certification courses during this period but i have watched many useful lectures on UA-cam + all the essential skills required to do my role as hvac design engineer in Aec construction industry..so how to tailor my resume? The single most important thing going interview is explaining honestly to the employer how this job will help you achieve your dream. Does it help you support your family, does it help you learn a skill you care about deeply, does hit help you serve a community you care about deeply, etc. The key is being super clear on why this job is right for you and why you will stay motivated at it for a long time. If HVAC work is your goal, is there a trade school you can go to? Can you convince someone to let you apprentice with them for a year, etc? Gain the skills and you'll be incredibly highly sought after.

      Thanks so much for tuning in and the kind words. I think the best book on challenges, failures is "The Obstacle Is the Way" by Ryan Holliday. I would highly recommend reading or listening to it. I have a lot of thoughts on failures, but to sum it up: 1. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who does hard things, experiences years of hardship. It is the price one must pay to get to the next level. 2. Wisdom tell us that life is less about what happens to you and more about how you react to what happens to you. 3. If you find you are failing more than you'd like, do everything you can to find mentorship. Someone who can guide you through those challenges and help you avoid mistakes along the way.

      Hey, thanks for the feedback. I think it is all a question of what you value most. Do you value the dream most, do you value money most, time with others, etc. For me, it was never about money. It was always about creating something new during my time on earth. That is how I measured success. I knew things could go badly (they did for many years) but I put the dream above everything, which I think is a common theme of those who pursue their passions.

    Hi Joel, I really find your idea of burning the ships a good motivator to try out, but I'm still stuck on ways I can make it work for myself, running 10 miles doesn't feel as too much of a motivator for me for 2 reasons, one I like running and two, after my internship day it's dark outside and my parents won't really allow me to run in the dark (also because i'm a girl). Now I want to find something that would be a good motivator for me (what i need to finish is an internship report by the end of my internship, but every day i just don't feel satisfied with what i got done, i feel like im going so slow and lose focus quickly) do you have any advice?

    • @joelr5840
      @joelr5840 Рік тому

      Hey GK! There are a lot of ways to burn the ships. Here are two ideas: 1. Make a donation to charity each day you don't put solid work into the project. 2. Tell someone at your internship that you really admire (preferably your boss) that you are going to have a draft report done by date X. Date X should come before the actual due date. Then you will feel the pressure to complete the report sooner than the actual due date. Let me know if that is helpful!
