Boogieman Fly Tying Tutorial
This is one of my absolute favorite streamer patterns. They are a pretty quick pattern, and absolutely wreck fish. This particular color combo is one of my favorites. I'm not sure if fish take it as a baitfish, crayfish, or they just see a blur of movement and instinct kicks in.
This fly is a staple Kelly Galloup pattern, and is worthy if being in every streamer angler's box. This tutorial isn't meant to be an exact replica of how Kelly ties them, but to show you how I tie them specifically for our local smallmouth fisheries.
Typically, I downsize hooks and run the MFC 7050 and 7052 for trout. You don't need the heft and hook gap of the B10S hook though I know many that use it.
I fish this pattern on a floating line when the water is really clear and on a sink tip when I want to get down a little deeper.
We usually have all materials in stock in the shop. If you have questions shoot us an email, give us a call, or drop questions in the comment section.
MATERIALS LIST:

Body - Estaz Normal - Peach & Deep Red
Hackle - Fish Hunter Select Saddle Hackle

LB's Floating Minnow Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 7282 роки тому
This pattern is an excellent topwater baitfish pattern. I've caught fish all over VA with these fellas. This pattern is based off of the Topwater CK Baitfish, but their are obvious material variances, and the addition of the shank provides a lot more action! The hook choice is a short and strong shank. This fly will get aggressive hits when fished with quick 3-4" strips across rapids and semi-t...
Dirty Purple Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 1 тис.2 роки тому
This fly pattern is brother to Yeager's 409. We wanted a pattern that incorporated the foam, legs, and hi-visibility of the 409, but sat a little lower in the water. This is a great pattern for our local small streams. It has enough flotation to support a dropper nymph, and the purple is an great color for our early spring/late winter fish!
Yeager's 409 - Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
This has quickly become one of our go-to dry flies through late spring and summer. It ticks all of the boxes I have for a small stream dry fly: 1) Floats REALLY well, 2) is easy to see, and 3) fish love 'em. You can easily change colors to replicate whatever color scheme is working on your home waters, but in Virginia yellow is a go-to as we start to get heavier hatches of Yellow Sallies. There...
Tying Jake's DB Ribbed Worm - Semperfli Chenille - Underwater & Fishing
Переглядів 4,4 тис.3 роки тому
The squirmy worm hit the world by storm a few years back and has been smoking fish ever since. There was always one problem with it, the material melts and shreds apart very easily. Semperfli came up with a material that provides the same (or very similar) action as a squirmy worm, but doesn't melt or get ripped to shreds as a normal squirmy. The pattern in the video is Jake's DB ribbed Worm. T...
Easy Caddis Nymph - Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
A stupid simple caddis nymph. This is an incredibly basic pattern that requires basic materials and skill. If you're new to fly tying this a good pattern to get started on! This fly can be altered to look like many different varieties of bugs, such as the Hellgramite at the end of the video! On pressured waters I've done well fishing these. The extended/elevated body make this fly look differen...
Thomas and Thomas Zone Rod Review - 7'6" 3 Weight

The Thomas and Thomas Zone Rod Review - 7'6" 3 Weight This has become one of our most used small stream rods. It's lightweight, accurate, and can handle a wide variety of fishing conditions you will experience out on our VA small streams! We've been slinging the Zone for about 15 months. This has given me ample time to form my opinion and proclaim my endorsement. As an all-around rod this is to...
March Brown - Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
The Big Ploppa is designed to hold massive amounts of weight for dry/dropper rigs! Typically, when our March Browns are hatching, we higher water flows. This means you need a heavy fly that can get down to the bottom. Rather than using an indicator to suspend the heavy nymph I like to use a big dry fly. That's where the Big Ploppa comes into play! Tie it in varying colors depending on what's ha...
BIG BUNNY - Articulated Streamer Fly Tying Video
Переглядів 4,3 тис.3 роки тому
The Big Bunny. This articulated fly is for trout, bass, or anything else that eats baitfish. We fish these on our local rivers in Virginia: the Jackson, Smith, and the James River behind the shop to name a few. It's a basic design, think, an articulated Zonker - with more bunny. Tied in the size we show in the video, it's perfect for young of the year trout, suckers, or shad (depending on what ...
Cowen's Somethin' Else - Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 24 тис.3 роки тому
This fly was created by striper guru Henry Cowen. This fly was created to imitate small threadfin shad. This pattern has done hard work for us on our local striper fisheries. In the fall/winter months when our fish are keyed in on those smaller baitfish you'd be hard pressed to catch them on something any bigger. The Something' else uses Polar Fibre rather than Bucktail (like a classic Clouser ...
Sinking Fly Lines - The Basics
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
Fly lines can be confusing. Especially, when it gets into the realms of sinking fly line. This video breaks down the most common styles in common lingo and should give you a better understanding of the different sinking fly lines. Sinking lines can be incredibly helpful, and in some instances necessary if you actually want to catch fish. From lakes to smaller streams you will need to vary what ...
Frenchie - Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
This is one of the most popular flies out there right now, and will certainly find it's way into the "fly hall-of-fame." If there ever is such a thing. The frenchie takes the profile of a small nymph (much like a Pheasant Tail), and simplifies it by finishing off the fly with a bright hotspot. When I'm nymphing and in a new place you better believe this fly is in my box. It has resulted for mor...
Resin Ribbed Wet Fly
Переглядів 4233 роки тому
This is a great wet fly! It takes the classic elements of a wet fly and meshes them with modern materials (ie. resin and rubber legs). In this video we showcase the UV resin technique that helps you get the glossy smooth body. This UV resin technique can be taken into any other realm of tying as well. Use it on nymphs such as a Perdigons, Frenchies, or other patterns you want to stay thin and g...
FLY FISHING TIPS: 1 WAY TO ADD WEIGHT
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 роки тому
I started doing this tip with streamers and tube flies. Why not expand it into the world of dry/dropper fishing? This easy tip has been helpful when hiking up mountains and trying to make quick adjustments that do MORE than make the fly sink deeper. I almost always have nymphs with the fluorescent beads tied up and in the box, but sometimes I need more (or less) weight. If you had infinite time...
Mini Moto's Minnow Fly Tying Tutorial

The Mini Moto's has been one of our favorite winter time flies for small to medium sized trout streams for years now. I've done this tutorial several years ago on a different video platform, but it seems to have disappeared into space... The fly and tying style in this one is th...

I missed a 20+ brown today on a green weenie my cousin made with a loop tail. I had no chance of landing it. I'm new and have no idea I'm doing wrong. If I was using my spinning reel, I would have no problems. I have a 9 foot 5 weight with 4x leader. It's such a huge learning curve and often get frustrated.

    • @andrewkent6283
      @andrewkent6283 Рік тому

You definitely can use it year around, but it is most commonly used in mountain streams in the fall/spring. If you use it in winter, treat the dry fly mainly as an indicator. However, there are occasions (warm sunny days) where trout will still go for the dry, so it is nice to have an "indicator" with a hook in it. Cheers!
