Erik could have died, had Ayrton not cleared his airwayb and stopped the car flaming out... I can imagine his devastation when he couldnt save Ayrton... its an awful thing to carry .... The racing should have stopped... Ayrton was the 3rd serious crash..... a horrendously sad weekend

Can't believe only found out today that Senna saved someone's life! I don't even remember this from the movie "Senna". You'd think that would be an important detail especially when there were accusations about him being "dangerous driver".

I'm a little lost, so comas crashed and the wheel kocked him out and after that he was still accelerating? I'm confused because his car was at a complete stop. Did he get knocked out and that cause the crash? If so, how did he get hit in the head?

There is another Erik Coma's video, the first time he could spoke about. May be some one can translate - Ele fala a mesma coisa a respeito do Ayrton.

"He says the same thing about Ayrton. He was allowed to leave the stands (he had stopped due to car problems) during the yellow flag and saw Ayrton's car; so he stopped. I'm not a mystic, but there's something there. Note that because of this he stopped Formula I at the end of the season...." -Google Translate

The protective equipment in 1994 was pretty crap. With the modern cars, there's a safety cell, crumple zones and the other parts get put on before the race starts. In a crash, the pretty much comes apart to disperse the energy and protect the driver, with the halo attached to the front. The drivers now fireproof, stronger helmets individually crafted to their head shape. They also wear better fire proof suits,a hans device and have to be able to escape the car from a seated position within 10 seconds. The 1990s car was a complete chassis, the tyres were attached as well as the wings. The tyres had tethers to stop them from coming off the chassis. Unfortunately, this was what caused Senna's death, the tethers pulled the tyres back and one of the tyres Senna within such force it caused multiple skull fractures and a ruptures temporal artery. Basically stopping his brain from working properly. According to the National Geographic channel by the time he was on the helipad at the hospital, he had lost 90% of blood volume. He arrived at hospital at about 14.20, was put on life support whilst attempts were made to stabilise Senna's condition. Sadly at about 18.15 life support was switched off after neurosurgeons established that nothing clinically could be done to save Senna's life. This is the ethical quagmire, his heart and lungs could have been kept going via a machine for some time. But is that alive,is that fair? Keeping a person ventilated for long periods has it's own problems; hospital acquired infections, pressure sores,it's labour intensive. 2 people are required to do personal care and repositioning needs to be done every 2-4 hours.

As a newer F1 fan, i believe his selfless act to save a life is a greater thing than any race or title he ever won. Say what you want about his attitude and racecraft, the man had balls of steel and a golden heart.

That San Marino Imola GP weekend was just horrendous. I had a really bad feeling about it. First it was Ruben’s crash and then Roland’s untimely dearly. I just kept on thinking that the race should have been can cancelled. Senna did say that God spoke with him and that God was going to give him his greatest gift. I guess it was the opportunity to live with him in heaven in eternal peace. I fell out of love with F1 that day. In my opinion he was the greatest.

0:50 - "... The right front wheel hit me on the helmet, which knocked me out". I may be completely wrong but at Imola did Senna hit the wall and the right front wheel hit him in the head - only it had part of the suspension assembly attached to it, which punctured his helmet and killed him? (God bless you Ayrton). His revving car almost sounded like an air raid siren. I thought it was some weird ambulance or an added effect when I heard this years ago, altho I was only 5 or 6 at the time.

You guys have no idea what the HUMAN BEING Ayrton senna represents to us, Brazilians. He was not just the best f1 driver ever. He was an SPECTACULAR person , helped thousands of poor people ans taughted us how to be proud of our country in a very hard period whe lived in brazil ( difficult days). Every single sunday was like a religion for us to be in front of the tv, all family together, whatching the race untill we saw him raise our flag after his victory. When he died Brazil stoped for 3 days. In São paulo 1.5 million people went to the streets in his funeral. No words to explains what he represents. He is a legend. For us he did no die.
