    So, I am older and planning to submit my application to a school that costs a ridiculous amount of money to attend. I am feeling incredibly nervous about the money and how I am going to live-- but I know that if those weren't obstacles I would jump in without a second thought. Since those ARE real life obstacles I was just wondering what your plan is after graduating... what are your loan payments going to look like, do you know? I want to do this, and I also don't want to feel trapped or unable to live comfortably after graduating due to student loan repayment T^T

    • @jojodouglas
      @jojodouglas 5 днів тому

      @@kailynthompson1305 hi there! The good news is that most PhD programs are funded to some degree (either partially or full) which means student loans are usually kept to a minimum. My program only recently became fully funded, so I unfortunately have a student loans I’ll have to pay back, but I knew that ahead of time and that was a decision I made for myself. Ultimately, you’ll have to look into the funding capabilities of the programs you’re applying to and weigh the pros and cons to make the best choice for you

    I'm in my junior year of undergraduate I haven't done an internship yet (I'm negotiating one now), and I've just started looking for a research opportunity. When do you think I should start my applications? I'll be applying to Psy D programs here in Pittsburgh.

      @jojodouglas Місяць тому

      @@believerinchrist6391 hi there! I’m not as familiar with the PsyD application process, but I would assume it’s quite similar to PhDs. With that in mind, I’d say it might be best to start working on application materials over the summer months before the fall you intend to apply. But I would also suggest starting to research and narrow down which programs you’ll apply to during the spring. This gives you plenty of time to refine your materials before application due dates

    I just discovered your channel and thank you so so much for all your insight (you are genuinely saving me). Also your nails in this vid are so cute! • @jojodouglas
      @jojodouglas Місяць тому

      @@miacarlabusiness thank you so much! To answer your question, I’m not super familiar with the reputation of PsyDs. Tbh I don’t often find myself in spaces with many people who have PsyDs, and that’s probably because it seems like fewer PsyDs end up pursuing research careers. The majority of PsyDs I end up meeting are through my clinical work. I wouldn’t say that they’re less respected at all though, at least not from what I’ve seen. I imagine those who share that sentiment are referring to PsyDs in academia, as PsyD programs typically place less emphasis on research. But I encourage you to talk to any PsyDs you can connect with to gauge the environment from their perspectives

    She's not wrong in the slightest! I left my PSYD program after a year because my residency professor freaked me OUT! He said your graduation date is just a guesstimate (which I knew but not to what extent), but then he said he still had buddies in their PhD. program after 6 plus years. I already spent years 8-9 years of my life dedicated to school, which caused me social isolation and lack of quality family time! Some papers took hours to write. There were days i spent on my computer ALL DAY, time i woke to the time i went to bed... So I said to hell with debt, and this prison shaped as a computer! I thought i was doing a good thing. My debt from FASFA for my masters and one year of doctoral accumulated 65,000 dollars.. it gets better! So my exit counseling my payment was going to be 890 a month, and with interest would total 85,000 after the time i repaid it back.. It spoked me so i chose a lower option of like 300 a mth which is doable welp that disqualified me for any student loan forgiveness programs and is now a 25 year loan that will cost 145,000 after repayment in complete.. I can not imagine the debt doctoral students have when it takes anywhere from 4 to 8 years.. JUST GROSS! I even got a 33% discounted tuition scholarship because i was an honor student.. And FYI, military benefits only go so far.. Because what you're willing to pay to be called DOCTOR! It's a hefty price of money and sanity! I thought about returning, but Im ready to gain money, not keep giving it to universities whose degrees can't even land jobs for ppl. I got my degree in psychology but can't even use it because it was CACREP accredited! My state allows for one to become a counselor LPCC without it, but to get the main license LPC, you have to have that accreditation to pass the NCE exam, lol. There is so much red tape.. They will all be glad to take your money up until the very last stage and tell you its not good enough.. BEWARE! Therapists make more money than doctors due to SIGNIFICANT DEBT! TRADE school or getting some certificate and living your life while making money is better than wasting precious years of life you'll never get back!
