I've been playing drums for over 35 years and am here to pass along my experiences from behind the drum kit and in the business. I have toured and gigged all over the United States and have recorded with many artists over the years. Although playing drums came naturally to me, I have studied with some great drummers and practiced a ton to refine my playing. I marched in drumline and played jazz through high school and into college, meanwhile keeping a night job with independent bands. I have played primarily original music throughout my career, but have also enjoyed stints performing in cover bands.
These days, I enjoy working in my home studio and being a dad. I'm also a guitarist, bassist and synth player who writes and records my own material. Specialties are a unique brand of lofi played with live instruments, as well as driving guitar rock. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Are you able to move one of the toms over to your left side to act as another small snare drum?
Sure! You can put anything wherever you like and assign any type of sound in the module to it 🥁🤘
@@skiddleberrythats amazing thats exactly what i was hoping. Definitely gonna start saving up. Thank you for the quick reply :)!
Of course! You'll love it 🥁🤘
I have same kit. I noticed you changed the kick beater. What do you use because the one that came with it sucks. Thx
I have a Tama Speed Cobra 310 Double Pedal (There's a review on my channel). Those are the stock beaters that came with it. What did yours come with? That kit doesn't usually include a kick pedal. 🥁🤘
I WANT YOUR SHIRT, NOW!
🤣 Thanks! I love that shirt 🤩 Amazon baby! 😉 🥁 🤘
Hi there. Please, I need your opinion. 2 weeks ago I got Pearl P932 and now I have the chance to exchange them for speed cobra 310, is it worth? What is your opinion?
I don't have direct experience with the Pearl pedal. The primary difference I see is that the Tama pedal has double chains where the Pearl has single. I can tell you that both are very good drum companies. I'm still happy with my Tama pedal after a year. If you're unhappy with the Pearl pedal for some reason then switch it out for a Tama, but if it feels good and fits your playing then you're probably fine. Also try searching for a video that compares both pedals side by side? Good luck and us know what you decide! 🥁🤘
@@skiddleberry thank you very much for your quick reply. And one small thing, do you see any difference between speed cobra 310 and iron cobra hp600dtw, it is the last question, thank you.
I haven't played the 600, but I find this: "the Iron Cobra 600's most unique feature is a reversible cam called the "Duo Glide Cam." A simple adjustment allows fast changes between a true round "Rolling Glide" sprocket and an offset "Power Glide" sprocket." The other big difference is the footboard. The 310 has a long footboard while the 600 has short. I have played a short footboard pedal for decades and that's one reason I wanted to try the 310. I actually really like the long footboard and find it to be very comfortable and super smooth. For me personally if I had to choose I'd still go 310 for the long footboard. As for the 600s dual sprocket, how much more power do you need in your kick pedal?? 🤣🥁🤘
@skiddleberry the same idea came to my mind once I started considering that. Thank you very much, I think, I will start with 310 and if smth goes wrong, I will change it for hp600) thanks again
@GesheleFit my pleasure. Let me know how it goes! 🥁🤘
I was going to get this but I settled for the lemon splash instead. So far it's holding up but I really haven't used it much. I'm also looking to get a China. I don't really need one at this moment but hey it looks cool lol. I am out of connections on my module tho so I'd need to get a splitter. I'm not sure if I should split it off the module or get the female end and split from a Tom if that makes sense
That splitter I talk about in the TD-17 review is a great way to expand. You basically split the rim signal off from a tom and allow a cymbal to trigger it 😉 🥁🤘
@skiddleberry after I wrote that comment I remembered your video on it. Thanks
Of course. Yeah it opens up quite a few possibilities 🥁🤘
Great Review!! Thx!!
My pleasure! Thank YOU 🥁🤘
Just got mine. So sick.
Nice! Enjoy the new kit. Let me know if you have any questions 🥁 🤘
Does this mean that the head and rim will play the same sample or the rim will no longer trigger anything?
So essentially we're rerouting the rim signal to the additional cymbal. So when you hit the actual rim of the drum there is no sound triggered 🥁🤘
I can't seem to get the snare cross stick to trigger, eventough I got xstick toggled on. How have you dialed in your settings?
I didn't have to dial anything in. I just have xstick enabled, put the butt of my stick on the head and rock the stick down to the rim for cross stick. Sometimes if I hit it too hard it will make the rim sound instead of cross stick. Do you get any sound at all when you hit the rim? 🥁🤘
Congrats!! I just started playing again after 25 years and your channel is a huge help to me!! Just got the Roland TD 17 kvx2 and I'm loving it!
Awesome! Glad to hear it. Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to know more about. Thank you so much🥁🤘
Congratulations!!!
Thank YOU! 🥁🤘
Appreciate all of your insight 🎉 congratulations
It's my pleasure. Thank you!! 🥁🤘
I'm a beginner drummer and I'm looking for an electronic set to get me started. My concern is buying too low and growing out of the set or that it feels cheap. The goal is to build skill so I can play the drums at my friend's house when we jam and record to Ableton. Would you recommend this set?
100% absolutely. If it's in your budget it's a rugged reliable kit with good practice features that will last you for years 🥁🤘
Thank you @@skiddleberry
My pleasure 🥁🤘
I’ve been playing/recording with this kit for a couple of years now and have generally been pleased with it. I trigger EZD3 when I record for the better sounds and while there is essentially no noticeable latency, the response does suffer a bit when not using the module’s internal sounds. My biggest gripe has been not being able to calibrate the high hat properly, as it doesn’t stay calibrated very long, and is generally a pain in the butt. I also loathe the feel of the kick drum surface. For those reasons, I am gearing up to go “all in” on the Roland V-713. I want the digital snare, high-hat and multiple outs on the module. Thank you for the outstanding video. Will like and subscribe.
Thank you so much! 🙏 I do have to fiddle with the hi hat occasionally to keep it how I want it. I use the calibration process in the module to get it pretty close and then I fine tune it with the upper clutch. Hasn't driven me too crazy... yet lol Have you looked into Superior Drummer? Different midi velocities trigger different samples altogether...like there are multiple sounds at different velocities. I think you'll find better resolution and nuance in Superior Drummer! 😉 🥁 🤘
great video, you deserve more subscribers! i have a question, would you recommend the KVX2 for a student? i’ve been playing for about 3 years now and i’m at an intermediate level.
You're too kind 🙏 Thank you! Yes I would absolutely recommend for a student. It's a solid kit and there are some useful practice features built in. It might be a big investment for someone just checking out drums to see if they like them. But if you're already into it and if it's in your budget, go for it! 🥁 🤘
Great review, Thanks.
My pleasure! Thank you 🥁🤘
Thanks for answering my Rogers hi hat question and measuring the pad hole. Some thing else caught my attention. I've noticed that 90% of the people that have the Roland kit ....that the drums are low. They're playing the snare very low. I like your idea of the snare stand. But.... do the rest of the drums and cymbals sit a little too low? I had an alesis nitro for practicing, and I had to work up little extentions for the legs so the whole rack would sit higher. I did order the kit yesterday.....got it for $1499.
Nice! Congrats on the kit and that's a great deal 😁 I have my kit set up comfortably for me. Because the toms are so shallow, I'm able to get them lower than with my acoustic kit. It's an efficient set up that allows me to get at the toms and cymbals without reaching up high for them. Less arm travel allows me to play faster between drums 😉 Enjoy! 🥁 🤘
Will the hi hat work with an older rogers hi hat stand with the thinner stem?
I would think it would work fine. I'll take a closer look...
Just measured the diameter of my stem and it's 7mm. I don't think you'd have any issues snugging down on a narrower stem with the upper cymbal hardware. The lower controller part slides over the stem and sits on the base where the lower hat cymbal would be. I don't think it would be bad to have some play around the stem there. Hope that helps! 🥁😉
Awesome video I just got my kit a week ago and I’m loving it! How do you have the module mounted?
Thanks so much! Congrats on the kit. I just used the included hardware to mount the module... it's attached to a clamp with the plastic post that snaps into the bottom of the module. I like mine to the right and below my hi hat and behind left of the snare 🥁🤘
Great review, will be saving for one of these, looks amazing
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope you can snag one soon, they're really great 🥁🤘
I did hit that, I can only recommend except the tom pads, they are a crime agains humanity
What did you not like about the toms? 🥁🤘
@@skiddleberry the fact you HAVE to use proprietary drum heads is a no no for me.
Fair enough 🥁🤘
If you use the aux port for another floor tom, could that be split as well? So 4 toms and 4 added cymbals? Thanks for the informative vid and tips
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work to split a tom plugged into the auxiliary input... the splitting occurs at the pad rather than the module. I will test that to confirm. But yes, that would be four toms and if you split each rim off that would be four additional cymbals - or whatever you want to plug in there. Thanks for the great question! Glad you find the video useful 🥁🤘
Excellent review and I'm totally with you as far as the TD 17 KVX being a sweet spot in the current Roland lineup. I gig w a VAD 306 w a TD 27 digital pack upgrade - fortunate to have two of these kits, one for home, practice, recording, and one for gigging and absolute love them, but the TD 17 KVX is the next best thing even without the digital pad capabilities 👏
That's awesome you've got those setups! And that you're grateful for it 😉 They're all great kits. Rock on stikkman 🥁🤘
You could try putting a dowel rod inside the snare mount.
Not sure exactly where you mean? 🥁🤘
Great video, thanks.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! 🥁🤘
I always thought it would look better if the wires ran inside the tubing to each drum or cymbal. Roland could make a 1/4 inch open slot on the tube, then it would be able to tuck the wires inside. Admittedly, I don't know if that would be possible. Just wondering.
That's a good idea! The wiring can get a bit unruly at times lol 🥁🤘
Excellent !!!
Thanks so much! 🙏 🥁 🤘
this one looks pretty good but I think I am going to try to save a bit longer and shoot for the 27kv2. I intend to use it with software a lot of the time and the digital hat, snare, and ride seem like it'd be worth the extra grand
If you can swing it, go for it! I'm sure it's fantastic. Let us know how you like it 🥁🤘
I looked into getting the Roland TD-17 KVX2 but went with a different company instead. The Efnote 3x is about the same cost. The Efnote 3x has bigger tripple zone cymbals(2 16-inch crashes and an 18-inch ride), 2 10-inch rack toms, 2 12-inch floor toms, the snare is on a stand, and the hi-hat on a stand is much better functionality wise. Sadly, I do not think Roland is the best e-kit company anymore as other companies have better e-kits for about the same cost or less.
Interesting. I've never even heard of that company. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for sharing. FWIW I've been very pleased with the quality, feel and sound of the Roland kits I've used. 🥁🤘
Efnote is the new top tier IMO, but it's super limited. It's got some of the best high rez samples but with roland you get more. It's not like efnote is that much better but all their stuff, even the lowest tier, is the quality of Roland's best.
Best sounds I've heard are from Superior Drummer! 🥁🤘
Have you any experience/thoughts about the Alesis Strata Core vs the Roland TD-17 KVX2? I tried the Roland which was setup in Guitar Center and was impressed by its quality and playability vs the Alesis Nitro Pro I just purchased but, having tried a next level kit, I'm considering upgrading and wonder if the Strata core, being at roughly the same price point and a more recent kit might be a better choice.
The Alesis Strata Prime e-kit is the only Alesis e-kit I can recommend. The TD-17 kVX2 is a good e-kit, but Roland does make even better ones. Also, pole mounted snare drums suck. After a while of playing, the pole will dip down and no longer keep the snare up, so you may need a snare stand. For about the same money as the TD-17 KVX2, there are other brands I think are better, such as Efnote. The Efnote 3x is about the same price but has bigger 3 zone 360° triggering cymbals, 4 duel zone tom pads, and the snare is on a stand. The Efnote 3x also looks a bit more like a nicer e-kit. The overall playability is about the same, with the exception of the Efnote hi-hat being much better to play. Sadly, I do not think Roland makes the best e-kits anymore. Roland kits are generally smaller than the comparable competition, and other companies have better, more accustic, realistic, built-in sounds. I only recommend Roland for the VAD kits with the newly designed snare. Alesis is budget friendly, but most of their e-kits I would not recommend. ATV makes good kits, Efnote makes fantastic e-kits, and Pearl and Zildjian make excellent e-kits if you have the money.
A rugged, reliable, solid kit was at the top of my requirements. When I was shopping I did look at some of the higher-end Alesis kits, but in my opinion they looked like they were almost too good of a value - meaning that maybe they spent more money adding features rather than investing in the quality of the components. My previous kit was an Alesis Surge, and for the money I found it to be good. However the snare died on me twice in 2 years. I'm not saying that Alesis doesn't make good drum kits, I just have found Roland to be of much higher quality. That's my experience. Sounds like you already have noticed that with the Strata. I would imagine the same to be true for other Alesis kits, but I haven't played that particular one. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! 🥁🤘
I recommend Superior Drummer software for unbelievable sounds. The Roland kits have great sound to begin with, but I find SD to be next level 🥁🤘
Excellent video. I actually just put my KVX2 together last night. I've only played a couple hours on it but I can already tell it was worth the extra money. It's very responsive, the onboard sounds are surprisingly good, and having "real" hi hat control with the VH10 is well worth paying a little extra over the KV model. My only issue is that the bell of my ride cymbal feels a bit tricky to trigger reliably but I probably just need to improve my accuracy.
Thanks so much 🙏 Great to hear your happy with it! I agree, the hi hat alone is worth the extra money. I can't remember if I had to adjust to the bell, but I'm sure you'll find the spot and muscle memory will kick in 🥁🤘
I've been playing on mine for a while now. The bell is tricky but just practice. I used to be about 60% when striking the bell and now I'm up to 90% haha.
I’m thinking about purchasing the Roland TD17KV2, it’s around my budget. Would you recommend this one if you can’t spend the extra few hundred or the one you reviewed in the video? Also, do you think purchasing a warranty is worth it? I’ve seen many say it isn’t and you could just purchase the parts that need to be replaced. Great review btw!
If you can't swing the extra $ for the KVX2 I'd still recommend the KV2 over anything else. One of the main reasons I bought Roland is the rugged reliability of the kit and I did not purchase an extra warranty. No issues here! 🥁🤘
@ Awesome! And last question. What speakers would you recommend for these edrums? I’m looking for a speaker that’s good enough to be heard for one room.
@@thejournalist8091 unless I'm playing with other musicians, I always run closed back headphones or in ear monitors. Even if I'm going through a PA with a band, I still prefer to run in ear. Part of the original draw to electronic drums for me was to play without making noise any hour of the day or night. Plus I think they sound better straight into my ear. You're the second to ask that today, so maybe I'll explore that topic for a future video 🥁🤘
@@skiddleberryThanks again for the answer. Here’s some speakers I’m considering if it helps your future video: a. KRK Rokit 5 G4 $149 b. Mackie CR5-XBT $149 - $199 c. Yamaha HS5 $149 d. Behringer Truth b2031a speaker $169
@thejournalist8091 interesting. I'll look into it. Thanks! 🥁🤘
I have a Roland TD-17KVX2 and FBT X Lite 115A Active Speaker because in Chile doesn import a roland speaker… with headphones audiotechnica works perfect but I am not satisfied with active speaker which do yo would recommend me?
I play with headphones or in ear monitors almost exclusively. When I jam with my band we run a full PA system, which would probably be too much for what you're looking for. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with a smaller speaker for the kit. Maybe some of our fellow drummers here have some good ideas?? 🥁🤘
Can I play with double bass?
Yes absolutely! There's some demo of that in the video 🥁🤘
I want ni ❤
It's a great pedal for the money! 🥁🤘
Excellent vid. Great job.
Thanks so much 🙏 My pleasure! 🥁🤘
Great video! You can't go wrong with the Td 17! Ive had mine since they first came out, and since then I converted it to acoustic look, maxed out the pads with splitter cables, and its awesome, i never get bored with it as the possibilities are endless with being able to add samples, and i haven't even tried using vst yet, im a total technophobe,(old guy here) but i have a friend that is willing to help me set it up,but i don't see myself needing anything other than this awesome module! Thank you for the video!
That’s awesome! You’ve really made it your own. It's an outstanding kit with lots of possibilities. Glad you enjoy the video 🤘 Getting into VST isn't too tricky and it opens up an even bigger world of sounds and flexibility. USB cable to the computer and then you can play or record midi data so you can change your sound anytime in the future. Superior Drummer is my favorite 😉 How's the kit holding up for you? Anything wear out on you yet? 🥁 🤘
@skiddleberry I basically just have the module, cos I converted the og pads to acoustic, but I've never had any issues with the og pads,as far as the module, I've added lots of wav samples, never had any problems, the power block came unplugged one day and I panicked ,thinking something happened to the module, but it was fine 🙂, so I put a piece of gorilla tape on the block where it connects. If u haven't done it already, I recommend lemon cymbals, they are great at a great price, and they hold up well, I sold all my Roland cymbals and replaced em with lemon cymbals
@mikeydreadmastalski4345 interesting, I haven't run across Lemon yet. Maybe I'll check one out for reviewing purposes. I'm hoping the Roland cymbals last me for years 🤞 Glad to hear your module is going strong! That's why I invested in these 🥁🤘
@skiddleberry The roland cymbals will definitely last, I just didn't like the look of the Cy 8 cymbals, I slowly replaced them with the Lemons, they make an 18 inch ride, and cool little 9 inch splashes, plus they just came out with a 20 inch ride too
@mikeydreadmastalski4345 Nice! Thanks for sharing the info 🥁🤘
Yeah, man, great video. I appreciate your explaining the dual zone pads. I was looking at td07, but td17 seems to have the features I need.
My pleasure. Glad you find it useful. TD-17 kits are great! You won't be disappointed 🥁🤘
I would have gotten the 17 if I had known 10% of what I know now. I bought the 07 about 6 months ago and it will last me for life but it's still more like a toy if you're intermediate or higher.
The TD-07 looks good for the money. I would get that over any other brand at that price. Plus you saved a grand that you can put into other gear! You can also expand your sounds a lot with midi and vst software like Superior Drummer 😉 When I had my last kit, all I cared about was using the midi signal to trigger SD on my computer. And you can always sell it and level up eventually 🥁🤘
Almost exactly 1 year ago I bought my very first drum set. An acoustic set. Several months later I bought this. I barely touch the acoustic set anymore but I should probably spend more time on it. I did upgrade the rack to the one the td-27 comes with. It's way more adjustable. I also bought a bigger floor tom, put a lemon splash on it and put my snare on a stand. Granted I'm just a newb but I didn't care for the sounds of the kits (most of them anyway) so I bought a kit from the Edrum Workshop. They sound way better! Now that's it's been about 1 year and I'm enjoying learning (mostly lol) I kinda wish I would've got the the td-27 for the digital hihat, snare and ride. Maybe someday I'll update but for now it's a perfect kit for a beginner.
Nice! Sounds like some nice upgrades. Glad you're enjoying the kit. Check out Superior Drummer software for even more incredible sounds 😉 🥁 🤘
great review. However, I have one question. What to get if you want the best VST triggering experience? Is there anything that can beat the new td 713/716 in terms of dynamic and sounds? The VST sounds are for sure better, but I dont know how the dynamics are in triggering versus a new flagship module? I mean if you use edrums only at home, what would be the best setup? 713 are over 6k. For half the price you can get a good soundcard or a midi i/o device, a computer and a mid e-kit like the TD17. But I am asking myself, even with all this hardware can you reach the dynamics of the new 716? Maybe is the best thing to get the digital hi-hat and digital snare separetely? I dont need a big kit. Only a small bop kit.
I use Superior Drummer 3 software, which cost me about $400. Expansion packs are available, but I've been perfectly happy with the core pack. Superior drummer, in my opinion, provides top-notch professional grade sounds. They are some of the best drums recorded with the best microphones by some great sound engineers in some of the best studios in the world. As far as dynamics go, there are separate samples for different velocities within Superior Drummer. That means that you don't get the same sample played back louder or softer depending on how hard you hit. You get different recorded samples of the drum being hit hard, soft and multiple points in between. There is also a full mixer and effects included within the software. SD can run in a DAW or as stand alone. I connect my TD-17 to my computer with a USB cable and trigger those sounds. I can play in real time with no discernible latency. When recording, I'm only tracking midi data so that allows me to change drum kits at any point after recording. Hopefully you have a computer you can connect to. It doesn't have to be a beast to record midi data. The on-board sounds on the TD-17 are great for playing in real time if you were to run into any latency issues. So that means my rig costs $2,000 for the TD-17 KVX2 and $400 for the software. For me, that's far more in my budget than $6000+ It's just two totally different budget worlds. I always aim for the best gear I can afford. The TD-713 & 716 look fantastic, and I'm sure if that's in your budget they are incredible. I haven't had the opportunity to play around with one. I'd certainly be up for reviewing one of those kits if one found it's way to me... Whaddya say Roland?? 😉 🥁 🤘
Thanks for the video on the Roland TD-17KVX2 V! I was going back and forth between the Roland and Yamaha, and your video really helped me decide on the Roland. I have not played in 20 years, and I am looking forward to getting back into playing! If you have any recommendations on accessories needed for this kit, I am all ears! Thanks again!
Glad it helped you decide! It's a great kit to get back into it with. DW makes great hardware, so any one of their hi hat stands. They make great kick pedals too. I've been enjoying my Tama kick pedal lately - here's more on that - ua-cam.com/video/Q9u4X0N2O80/v-deo.htmlsi=SlT9Um8B3t1Vonzv For the throne, just get something durable and comfortable.
