Does a Challenger belong on a race track? (First track experience)
In this video I take my Dodge Challenger R/T to a road course track for the first time! A huge shout out to Track Junkies at Radtorque Raceway for a great experience!
A couple things to keep in mind, I do have suspension mods done to my car, including Hotchkis front and rear sway bars, Eibach Pro Series lowering springs, and great tires among other mods. While this doesn't represent how a stock R/T would do at a track, swaybars, springs and tires are pretty simple mods that can be done relatively inexpensively to drastically improve your Challenger's handling characteristics.

    Mustangs don’t make less torque because of DOHC. It’s literally is the smaller Displacement. For example Toyota and Nissan truck V8’s both make peak torque sooner than their 5.7 Hemi and 5.3 GM pushrod competitors. Sam car legion is also awful at driving Mustangs.

    In my experience, driving very fast but heavy cars is a nightmare if you are surrounded by lighter and less powerful cars. Extra early braking, very slow cornering speeds and really sketchy exits. Sure, it's a rocket on straight track but it's not designed for tracks. Muscle cars are straight line only vehicles. However, if you can scrape together a muscle car race, it's very exhilarating.

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT 4 дні тому

      @@theseventhgeneration6910 it’s definitely a different experience for sure, but honestly they do great on a track. Challengers are definitely not common out there though. I will say it’s not uncommon to see Challengers on road courses passing Miatas and WRXs consistently. Cars that are generally regarded as great track cars. You are 100% bang on though, you have to adjust braking and cornering speeds for the car you’re driving. Thanks for checking the video out! 🙏🏻

      @@apocolypse11 I mean, sure but gt3 cars don’t resemble factory cars really at all. As far as picking up a Challenger from a dealership and being comfortable bringing your car to the track and keeping up with the pack, they do just fine. I agree though, the Challenger is definitely different from the Mustang and Camaro, and Dodge leans into it and embraces it. Makes the Challenger stand out in the segment.

    It seemed that 3rd gear was good for the course. I found myself gripping the chair while watching it the first time. I have not done any "Road Racing" since I was in my 20's. I was part of our University Sports Car Club and we would set up courses in the parking lots on the weekends where we would burn up our tires LOL. How did the instructors find the Challenger as you slithered through the course? I bet there weren't too many cars that had the sound yours did 😁😁

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT 5 днів тому

      Yessir, I left it in 3rd gear for most of the course aside from late in the biggest straightaway, where I needed 4th for a second. The one chicane in turns 12-14 right before the last straightaway I could’ve shifted to 2nd coming out of it, but I was worried about upsetting the balance of the car, so I left it in 3rd and used the torque to pull me out of the end of the combination. Honestly I had lots of great reaction to my car there! The instructors I had made comments about how they were surprised how well it handled, and I had no real problem keeping up to (and at one point passing) WRXs out there and the one gentleman in the Porsche 911, although I don’t comment much on it in the video because honestly we’re all learning in this, I know we could all shave time off of our laps, but for a car that’s not supposed to be able to turn, my Challenger had no real problems keeping up with the pack especially against cars that are supposed to be great choices for track cars. Made it more fun in a way.

    Great instructional video for first timers like myself. This video has given me confidence in attempting road course racing. Nice job... Nothing like driving a manual in road course racing. Think about it... You're like a conductor for a symphony... You have to know when to accelerate proportionally, brake proportionally, when to turn in and out all the while shifting correctly. The beauty of a manual. Quarter mile racing is fun, but road racing is the next level utilizing all the tools at your disposal. Looks like you had fun. Best part was taking your lovely wife around for a few laps. Nice to have someone you love to support your 'idiosyncrasies' ...

    • @TrackPackRT

      @@bschubarg that’s a nice compliment, and I’m glad I could convince you to give it a try! Honestly it was so much fun! I often had people gathered around my car to check it out, they said they’re not used to seeing many domestics there, and especially not Challengers. I could never buy a Challenger without the manual, it really is so much more fun and engaging. On the track it can really shine, but I found I rarely shifted aside from the one straight away because 3rd gear was ideal for most of it. I could’ve shifted into 2nd into the one chicane but at the same time I was worried about upsetting the balance of the car at that point in the turn so left it in 3rd which wasn’t too bad either because of the torque I have. Even watching back now there was so much more time I could’ve cut off my lap times in places, but it was such a good experience and I learned so much! Do it, you’ll have so much fun!

The assumptions in the videos are really annoying and it’s why I’ve yet to dive into messing with cars. While I don’t cover absolutely every minute of the install in these videos for obvious reasons, I always leave myself very available to answer questions and give advice for anyone out there who’s having problems, whether that’s here in the comments or through Instagram DMs. I really do believe in the culture of a great automotive community and helping each other out. That’s what makes the hobby great.

    The 3.6 does get a lot of hate. They are fairly decent motors and fairly reliable. But they’re far behind the times which isn’t always a bad thing. Its good that power is still considered impressive today because the 3.5 2gr-fse from Toyota/Lexus is considered underpowered by many but was making that power back in 2006 and is still used today. My 2007 GS350 has 313K miles and still has more power than I know what to do with half the time. Hopefully dodge keeps their 3.6 long term.

    Auto scats are the best. More gears, faster shifts, the manual clutch on scats are STIFF.

      The torque converter really gives it an advantage at the drag strip. Much easier to pull great 60’ times in an auto vs the manual.

      @@TrackPackRT True that, honestly I do believe these cars shine as autos, it helps reel in and make up for the weight of the car. They have the highest top speeds due to the higher horse powers but in the mid ranges they don't shine as much as they do at digs and top outs.

    This is a great review! I have a 16 Ram with the 3.6 pen. I'm more than happy with this engine and truck. The power is always there for what i need. Oil chang every 6k. At 175 km on it's running strong. Absolutely great truck for a do it all type of vehicle.

    Did you ever make it to a road course to see how it feels? I wore out a set of new tires in a weekend back when I was in college in the University parking lot course we set up. I had to drive on threads for a while until I could afford some new tires again LOL. Wasn't too bad, the tires weren't made for racing and the sidewall edges wore out quick on my 1978 Sunbird LOL. Sad thing was I had already paid to go to a real road course race weekend at Summit Point WV the next week and couldn't risk blowing out the tires. Got to hang out with friends and watch the fun though.

      Not yet but I’m working on it! I actually can’t wait to hit up the road coarse so I can try out some other new stuff I now have on the car! Too bad about your tires, they aren’t cheap so I get it! Next time maybe.

    I’ve had no Mechanical issues with my 2015 Grand Cherokee Limited, but have replaced oil Filter Housing 2 times, First time it leaked oil and the coolant sensor went bad, second time the oil pressure sensor went bad. I replaced it with the updated Aluminum one at 140K and replaced Original Spark Plugs and coils since I had everything apart. While changing the spark plugs one coil boot had oil on it , so replaced all the spark plug tube seals too. If I had taken it in the repairs would have been in the thousands. I did it myself and probably have around $500 for both repair/Fixes. I run BG EPR every 4th oil change and put a Baxter Filter housing on it to prevent dry start ups. I would like to buy a new vehicle, but can’t justify $1000 a month payments, when this vehicle has been paid off since 2018. Overall this is a Pretty good engine, would have been great but for the oil Filter housing Design.

    The problem with the scat pack is power to weight ratio. Dodge doesn't know how to build a car.....

      I think the reason the Challenger stands out so much and is so popular is because it's what the Mustang isn't. If it was small like the Mustang it wouldn't have the same appeal. Having said that shedding some pounds is a positive thing, but hard to do, especially with newer safety regs that came out and added a lot of weight to newer cars.
