  • In this video I try an experiment to test what gas mileage I can get from my cammed 2009 Challenger. The motor is the 5.7 hemi and the cam is an HRT Stage 2 cam Duration 273/279, Lift 0.596/0.582 which would be considered a moderate cam. 432 WHP with this setup for reference.
    Mods:
    Comp Cams HRT Stage 2 Cam w/phase lock
    Stainless Works long tube headers
    Magnaflow 3" Catback exhaust
    Corsa closed lid style air box
    Whiteline cradle bushings
    Hotchkis front and rear sway bars
    432 whp, 422 lb/ft tq.

      Just finished the video. I was hoping youd slip in a "smiles per gallon/liter" joke 🤣. I definitely thought it a couple of times

    With a cam you have to experiment around to get the RPM that is most efficient range for cruising because of the overlap. A bit faster might be higher MPG'
    I actually like Turbochargers for HP while retaining good MPG because cams (I love for the nasty sound) and superchargers have so much parasitic loss (takes 180 HP gain to show 100hp at the wheel) that they consume much more fuel.

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT  3 місяці тому

      Very true, turbo would be the ultimate for power and MPG!

      You'll have to talk to a remote tuner if you're going that way. Perhaps Hemifever, Jay Green come to mind.

    Hmmm… I’ve only ever gotten 22mpg max/19 city when the car wasn’t modified, and after my 392 cam I’m getting 16 city, but MY city driving is totally stop-n-go. YOUR city driving is like my Hwy driving.

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT  3 місяці тому

      I mean I only showed a short portion of my city cruise but it was light traffic, definitely not rush hour. In rush hour I could see that number dropping by a few mpg for sure, but I'd bet it's still around the 20-21 range when going gently. It was a fun experiment to do, definitely opened my eyes about my driving habits.

      @TrackPackRT Big factors to note: The Chrysler 300C has the 8 speed and I still have the stock 2.62 final drive rear end. So there's still a lot of good cruising ability there.

    Have you ever done what the manual says ?
    1st to 3rd to 5th
    No mods I’m mid 27mpg highway and around 20-21 over all
    Never done a all city

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT  3 місяці тому

      I definitely will on occasion. If I take one gear up a little higher in the rpm’s but traffic is slow or I’m hitting cruising speed I’ll just skip a gear and drop it right into 4th or 5th depending on the circumstances.
      Those are some good numbers for mileage! More disciplined with your right foot than me!

    In my 5.7 using a FRP Tomahawk and full exhaust 8lbs boost. If i drive normal on a longer trip ill avg 19mpg but shorter drive around 17..under boost im getting around 13.

      @TrackPackRT I'm currently doing dynos to see what numbers I get from different mods/stages I have done using the same dyno. Stock I was 340 whp and just procharger and prochargers tune I was 445 whp. I have done alot since then and will dyno again soon 2x for what it is now and a water/meth kit I have installed.

    What are you paying for 94? I can get 110 from a sunoco near me but it's $10/gal, or about $2.86/L. I usually mix 2Gal of 110 with 10Gal of 93 and it gives me 12Gal of 96. I have a 5.7 to 397 stroker, ported heads, fbo at about 10.6:1. I can watch the fuel needle moving, i get about 175 miles to a tank city

      @@TrackPackRTthanks, it's pretty rowdy lol hopefully i can put a whipple on it one of these days. wow that's over $7/gal. I pay about 4.50/gal for 93, plus the 110 i mix in, it comes out to about $6/gal. My heart goes out to you, i thought it was pricey here in Michigan. Thanks for your content. Your cam series really helped me can the car a few years ago, now i can't stop lol. I will probably be over hauling the control arms and such, you're videos will help me there too!

      Why? Were you knocking with 93?

    • @TrackPackRT
      @TrackPackRT  3 місяці тому +1

      @@bailey9r no, it’s just the highest octane we have available around here (besides race gas) so it gave us the most room as far as pulling the most power out of the tune while still being safe.

    • @sleepychallenger
      @sleepychallenger 3 місяці тому

      @@bailey9r i was getting burst knock on tip in with 93. Around me "93" isn't always "93". So to eliminate octane being the cause, i started by putting 5gal of 110 in a full tank. I got my timing where i wanted it with no knock and started dialing down the 110. I only put 2gal in a full tank now.
