Non-stop Algonquin Fish! Lake Trout, Splake, Perch!
So the 2nd part of the day started with a portage. I was to watch Al leave me in the dust as I was hard pressed to keep up with him. Reminded me of Mr. Canoehead from Vancouver in the late 60’s. I guess you had to be there. Anyway, ‘he gone’ but I made it to the lake!
Instead of splake, we ended up catching perch so after a while, it was the reverse trip as he carried the canoe back to the car.
Then it was on to the 2nd lake where we ended up catching a lot of good looking splake. They wanted leeches and we had them so the action was great.
That was a busy morning and afternoon of fishing but of course there was a pre dinner trip in the pontoon boat.
Was a gorgeous evening as the water was so calm. Al took along a snack as we waited for the lake trout to attack! I think fishing makes him hungry! The loons were out, probably our competitors.
The day ended with a good laker, not the size of Sam’s fish seen in the 1st video but fun to catch and release.
I would thank Vickie and Al for inviting me to their cottage for a type of fishing I don’t usually do. Great fun.
And Alfred, thanks for putting the segments together as I couldn’t do that so much appreciated.
1 more week of fishing left in a terrific season!
Cheers… brown trout guy

Giant Brown Trout Smashes Panther Martin!

Another tail grab of a biggie!! I remembered saying to Alfred that the tail grabbing short video, 2:01 minutes was getting a lot of views and that I had another catch and release where I thought I should again pick up a big brown and direct it to the deeper water as I had released it heading to shallow unnavigable waters. So Alfred found the segments and here’s the short video. I decided to try...

So this is the brown I caught but could not download the segments from the gp disk to my Quik app. So I gave the disk to Alfred and wished both of us the best of luck. We had some other segments to look at before getting to this beauty. I had fished a long time watching the big browns in this hole. They swam in front of me many times but were totally disinterested in what I was offering. Finall...

1st of all, a disclaimer! That pic is what we were fishing for. We did not find it but had an enjoyable busy am on the lake. Friends of mine, Al and Vickie, invited me up to their cottage in Algonquin park with the plan to catch lake trout, splake and Brook trout. The middle fish is the result of mixing the laker and the brookie. You’ve seen Al as he was in this year’s 1st video with me catchin...

We both hope you enjoy the video. Comments are appreciated, welcomed and answered. Well I would apologize for some of the segments where I was looking at the brown. This is a video that got ‘lost’ as we realized the segments had not been used yet. Good year for sure when that happens! So it would appear that I was a tag along with Alfred today as he was on a roll. He’d throw in a Craigleith or a worm and right away a brookie would dart out to attack. He was a busy guy and good for him. Glad to support him somehow and fun to watch. I added 2 other segments ...

Well, Alfred has been on a role recently. 1st a 26” brown which is the latest video and now this beauty rainbow. What a total surprise that was. And if you go to last year’s episode 11, you’ll see the same fish I’m sure, the Olympic swimmer and jumper. Alfred handled it differently and that’s why we have a video. Well done for sure. I missed the fish 5 minutes earlier. There were some violent t...

For the past 3 weeks, Alfred and I have not made a brown trout video although we have probably 40 segments where we say, ‘oh, look at that,” and “oh, there’s another one, it’s huge!’ We just couldn’t get a big guy to be interested in what we had to offer. Admittedly it’s getting later in the season and the big guys are becoming savvy to our ploys but still, we were getting a little frustrated b...

Good morning to you. Just checked the winooski river location. That’s some beautiful country. When I was young(ha!), I bought a small York river canoe, yellow like my vw bug, took it everywhere as I was able to lift it myself. It was a sad day when I realized I couldn’t handle it myself, on and off. In the water was great. So I had to say goodbye to it. Found a great home for it, Al, the guy in the video. Now it’s up in the park getting snowed on but waiting for the spring! Thanks for the thought and the view as that brought back good memories of fishing the little streams in my yellow canoe. Good day and cheers to you. Rob Ps…like your arm patch…my left sleeve is so full that I have started using the right sleeve! Great patch…cheers

Good day to you Paul. Ya, that was a challenge and I didn’t move around much, glad there was a back rest. Algonquin is a beautiful place, have to try it in the spring for some big brookies and maybe a ‘Sam’ sized fish from the 1st Algonquin video. Good luck with your knee replacement operation. Hope all goes well. Get it done before baseball commences. Take care. Rob

Hi Chris. Just saw this notice now. Guess I’m not too good on the technical side! It certainly is a tank, huge head. I was surprised when I saw it. Episode 4 shows the catch as I’d been fishing all day with absolutely no sightings when this big girl stops right in front of me. I was going home! 16” girth and heavy. Hope you and boys are good. Not sure if you were into winter sports or just ball. Was thinking of Dustin a few days ago when I was in Costco. Wrong 1 but still thought about him and you guys at phs. Cheers and take care, rob

Afternoon to you. Yes, a net would be good and someone other than me to use it would be better!! I was out alone as Alfred was busy with something called a day job. It sometimes gets in the way of bringing in the fish. Thought for a good moment that the branch would be a major obstacle and very happy when the net became free. I was both thankful and surprised. Thanks for watching the video. It’s been a great season for good sized browns and Alfred has done an equally great job of putting the segments together into a video. That is something I could not do. Cheers to you. Have a healthy winter. Rob

I was saying to Alfred the other day, this season was so prolific that we still had segments not put into a video, this Algonquin video would be an example, maybe 2 parts, not sure. And there’s a big brown still to go but presently it’s still on the gp disk. Hope you’re good. Quite an interesting game 5 of the World Series! Assume you watched a few of the games. Take care Rob

Shouldn't you wet your hands before touching the trout since you're not keeping them?

    • @robsleeman
      @robsleeman 2 місяці тому

Evening Jason….been thinking about your comment. My hands are somewhat wet when I’m handling the specks, not dripping, but moist. I think their chances of survival are great. The option of eating these wild trout which come up from the main river, does not appeal to me so I’d rather get them back into the water as quickly as possible. I admire but don’t dawdle in getting them back. I think they pose a greater life ending option from the big browns that share their water. 1 gulp from the browns you see in the videos, and they’re gone. That’s what I believe as I certainly wish no harm to these fish. Thanks for your comment. Sincerely Rob Ps….ive emailed a friend who works with fisheries, mentioning your comment. I’m sure to hear back from him. Cheers

Hi again Jason…..my friend from fisheries is the guy I’m catching Brook trout with in the 1st video of the year. It’s important to get the trout back into the water as soon as possible. And that’s right as both Alfred and I both worry that someone who doesn’t catch and release, will wipe these streams out in a season. That would be tragic. So suffice to say that we’re in Ontario. And not to tick you off, but when people ask us where I caught it, I have 2 answers, 1 of which I just this am gave the next door neighbour as she said she’d just watched the latest video, and where did you catch it? I told her bottom left lower jaw in the cartilage. She just looked at me, perplexed. My other answer could have been ‘north of Guelph and just south of James bay.’ Alfred and I are so fortunate to go to these streams and still find both lunkers and surprises. This video fish was certainly a surprise and made us both laugh when we saw up close what we’d caught. So again, I hope no offence taken with my answer as there was certainly none implied from my end. I enjoy seeing your name and we enjoy having you, both watch the video and commenting. Cheers rob

When you pass over the bridge, the water looks terrible so I think people don’t stop as they don’t want to waste their time fishing where there’s nothing! Alfred and I love that kind of thinking. Hi jasst…because I’m old, I carry 2 with me. And the rods are not long because of the surroundings. The panther Martin rod is 5 1/2’ and a no name. The bait rod is an ugly stick, 6’. I love seeing the pole bend on a strike. I use 4lb test in these streams. Anything bigger might be visible and unfair as I’d like a fight. Evening JP……well it’s north of the 49th and we’re blessed with some neat little streams for sure. A few years ago, like 55 or so, I invested in a topographical map and headed out with a friend. We looked at the map, saw the terrain and figured ‘that’s the spot’. Turns out a lot of them weren’t the spot but we had youth on our side. Great fun and these 3 streams you see in various videos are the end result of years of searching. Again, what can I say. These streams all have water that would be closer to 72oF as browns love that temp. Specks look for 68oF. I’m sure they don’t carry a thermometer with them but that’s what I’ve found. And the browns have been amazing this year. Alfred’s done a bang up jog editing all the segments. Love the visuals that the go pro hero black 9 gives. And you see my hand reaching for my head as I look for the ‘on’ button’. I used to have a verbal ‘on’ command but I got so excited when I’d get a big brown that I’d say the wrong words so Alfred thought it would cause me far less tension if I did the manual start. Alfred is both younger and smarter as it was a great call. Thanks for watching the videos. We absolutely love doing them. It’s casual and the fish are pretty good. Seeing a big brown swirl to the bait, chub tail or pm is exciting beyond words. And I’m trying to follow my daughter’s suggestion , ‘dad, turn the gp on and then cast’. I’m learning. Cheers and good night. Thanks for watching and commenting. Rob

@@Ftke685 and evening to you Ftke. Alfred and I were out this am at 7 and at hole 3, he saw the big guy swimming mid stream off to the left. I told him to go catch it as I went to the 1st part of hole 3 where in video 3 I caught the ‘atonement’ brown after my backwards fiasco of episode 2. I finished with my portion and as I’m crawling over a log, not video worrying any way, Alfred yells out that he’s caught it. I threw down my poles and ran for the net. I saw a huge splash, a tight line, another jump and then very quiet water! He’d left the building, like Elvis. Alfred was distraught. He replayed the ‘catch’ but the fish did not reappear. With these guys it’s 1 and done..he grumbled the entire walk back to the car. He went home and had a nap which was interrupted by a vision of the 30” brown saying adios. So you, Albert and I all know how easy these big guys can make fools of us. He’ll do his best to make this Mr Big I to a video! It was a fun day but we can’t make a video because the fish was sighted and gone within 5 seconds. Next time. Thanks for watching. Keep on trying different techniques for those browns. The browns around here like bait bouncing on the stream bed. They’ll watch it go by and then circle back for the attack. I need to hear from you when success comes. It will. I fished the 1 stream in video 4 from last year, for 3 years before I caught a brown. I knew they were there, I just wasn’t smart enough to understand their habits .thanks for watching and commenting. Alfred and opi both liked today’s comment. Makes everything worthwhile. Cheers rob

Went to the iPad Apple Store, iPad is fine and updated so no problem from that end. Went to where I purchased go pro and they spent an inordinate time trying to fix the problem, no go. They both said there are lots of complaints on the website by owners of gp who have the same problem. Both stores said that until go pro fixes the bug in the app, nothing will change……so if you know anyone who can help, tell ‘em to call because go pro is avoiding the issue and not giving any help what. For some reason since then, I’ve been fortunate to have the hook/lure attach to the cartilage by the mouth making the hook release much simpler and much less stressful for the fish. Getting the fish’s strength back after the catch and then release has worked well as the fish pulls away from me when it feels strong enough to go. And some have been caught several times a year with no apparent long term disability as evidenced by the strength of the subsequent catch. Thanks for your comment. Cheers..brown trout guy
