VSF GX-500 steel gravel - Disappointing...
Hey folks in this video I present to you the GX-500 VSF’s entry level steel gravel bike. There are things I like and dislike which I will tell you about and you can make up your own mind. I like the idea and design of the bike but in my opinion it has some errors and badly chosen components.

Da in dem Ständer eingestanzte Gewinde waren die mit der Flex entfernt werden mußten, danach stieß der Ständer an die Bremsscheibe was mit biegen beseitigt wurde. Jetzt steht es dauerhaft fest. Hey, ich freue mich dein Video gefunden zu haben. Das GX700 gibts gerade für 2.200 Euro im Angebot und ich war kurz davor zuzuschlagen, jedoch hat mich dein Video etwas umgestimmt. Ich kenne mich nicht so gut aus wie du (du hast es super nachvollziehbar erklärt, klasse!!), aber ich habe jetzt das Gefühl ich bin mit dem GX700 auf dem Holzpfad. Nun zu meiner Frage: Ich suche bestenfalls ein Stahl Gravelbike zum Touren oder sportlichen Ausfahren, um ein Bike zu haben was ewig hält und mit dem ich eben alles machen kann. Budget ist +/- 2000 Euro, egal ob neu oder gebraucht. Was würdest du empfehlen? Ich finde es schwer was aus Stahl zu finden, da der ganze Gebrauchtmarkt mit Carbon überschwemmt ist. LG Josef

      Hey, sry für die späte Antwort... Die Frage ist ob dir das Rad ansonsten gut gefällt und ob die von mir genannten Nachteile auch für dich gegen das Rad sprechen. Ich würde das Rad so nur empfehlen, wenn man keine Änderungen daran vornehmen möchte und nicht groß Upgrade will (Da das daran nur sehr eingeschränkt möglich ist und die Kompatibilität schlecht ist.) Ansonsten fallen mir nur marken ein von denen ich grundsätzlich viel halte und weiß das sie von Fachhändlern geschätzt sind ohne aber genau ins Detail gehen zu können. Zudem sind viele dieser Räder neu etwas über 2000€, gebraucht ist sonst natürlich auch eine Möglichkeit. Diese sind dann zwar natürlich nicht neu aber so wie es der Fahrradbranche momentan geht, sind womöglich höhenwertigere Komponenten Verbaut!. Diese sind z.B. Bombtrack (Modell: Hook bzw. Hook EXT), Kona (ROVE LTD), Salsa (Fargo), Tout Terrain (Vasco GT 28) oder von der Marke Patria (Tribos). Die Modelle sind nur Vorschläge, schau dir gerne alle Bikes dieser Marken an. Wichtig ist m.M.n. hydraulische Scheibenbremsen! Ich hoffe ich kann dir damit immer noch helfen, oder hast du bereits bei dem Angebot zugeschnappt? Cheers!

      @@josefarnold2873 Das ist durchaus ein angemessenerer Preis für das Rad. Ich finde es aber auch wichtig zu sagen, dass der Online Markt nach und nach durch die so günstigen Preise die kleinen Fachhändler den Gar ausmacht und viele nach dem Kauf merken: "Oh ich habe das Rad zwar zu einem günstigeren Preis bekommen, ABER ich habe nicht die Vorteile die ich gehabt hätte, hätte ich das Rad bei einem lokalen Händler gekauft" (Ansprechpartner bei Reklamationen oder Fehlern, schneller Termine für Reparaturen, womöglich eine Kostengünstigere oder gar kostenlose Erstinspektion und weiteres mehr! Das ist durchaus was Wert und manche Händler lehnen Reparaturen an Fremdräder sogar ganz ab, was nachvollziehbar ist, da Sie diesen Preiskampf nicht gewinnen können!

    Wer nicht mit einem wunderbaren 1-fach Antrieb auf Graveltouren klarkommt bzw. hier "seine Kadenz" nicht finden kann, wird sich ohnehin nicht mit einem 12kg Stahl-Alu Bike herumquälen. Mit etwas Bedacht eingekauft, baut man sich das Bike mit deutlich besseren Komponenten aus Einzelteilen auf - gibts alles günstig gerade. VSF verbaut alles was "preiswert" ist an dem Bike. Fürs geringfügig mehr hat man 2-3kg weniger unterm Hintern und auf den Laufrädern steht DT, auf den Komponenten GRX oder sogar AXS und die Gabel ist aus Carbon - je nach Wahl sogar der Rahmen. Ein "Ridley Kanzo" bekommt man für um die 600€ aus China (selbe Rahmen) - da bleibt noch viel Kohle übrig für gute Komponenten, sogar elektrisch ist machbar für das Geld.

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 21 день тому

      Hey, ich verstehe nicht so ganz deine Aussage mit der passendes Kadenz eines 1x12 Antriebs und dem Gewicht... Zum Eigenaufbau: Das Problem ist ja, dass der Rahmen nicht einzeln erhältlich ist. An sich wäre das super da er ja zudem eine Aufnahme für ein Schaltzug für den Umwerfer bietet und man somit auch einfach einen 2-fach Antrieb anbauen könnte. Ich verstehe dich so, dass man sich für gutes Geld ein anderes Rad aufbauen kann? Dem stimme ich zu!

    How is the compability with the SKS Speedrocker? I saw that you're using them too. Can you mount the Speedrocker while the Ortlieb brackets are already on the fork or do you have to remove the brackets first? I would install the Fork Packs with 3 screws on my fork.

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 21 день тому

      Hey, I always first attache the Mount for the Ortlieb Fork Pack first and then the SKS Speedrocker mudguard without any problem. The other way around should also be possible, but I recommend to first attache the mounts in order to know where to place the clamps of the mudguard. I also use 3 screws to attache the mounts to my fork and I attache the lower clamp of the Speedrocker below and the upper clamp above the mounts. The only adjustment I have to make is on the left side of the fork I take the C-clips off in order to route the break hose a bit differently otherwise it is a bit in the way of the clamps of the mudguard. I hope that is of help, Cheers!

      @@jeremyw.465I installed both yesterday on my bike. Kind of a problem is that the upper screw of the bracket covers ideal position of the front part of that fender. It hovers 3-4 cm above the tyre. The back part would be ok, as you can shorten the rods with a saw. But not much I can do about the front part. Bit unfortunate but still ok. Thanks for your reply!

      Hey @@bekahride That is truly unfortunate... It may be that the tree screw on your fork sit higher up and therefor there isn't enough room for the upper attachment of the Mudguard... In my video about the VSF GX-500 (ua-cam.com/video/s04uGKNunsY/v-deo.html) in minute 09:16 you can see how it is possible there and in my video about Gravel Upgrades Part 1. i'm a big fan of steel bikes. I don't get the idea of using aluminium forks on such a bike. I guess they source it in Asia and hence the missing routing options for lights. Maybe the planned the bike using a carbon fork but droppped in later in the process. As many touring experts already said (like Path Less Pedaled), one-by is a fad for real touring with climbs. But it's a hype and many people just don't know how to shift and maintain a FD.

    • @FuchsHorst
      @FuchsHorst 26 днів тому

      Ryde rims are the tanks of rims. They are nearly undestroyable and the DP19 is probably in production for over 20 years when the company was still called Alesa or Rigida. You probalby can run them tubeless but of course not officially. They are very cost effective and easy to build. I've done over 25.000km on Ryde Sputnik rims (19-622) with no loss and i'm way above 150kg of weight. Tubless is also a fad for many use cases as you must renew the sealant regularly, probably 2-3 times a year. That's a PITA for newbies and the will not do it until the have a puncture and the sealant fails during a ride. It's not user friendly.

    • @FuchsHorst
      @FuchsHorst 26 днів тому

      Most steel bikes in the past had no routing for dynamo cables. I have bikes from Patria, Utopia, Razea and even a Bakfiets. They all use zip ties for th dynamo cable and not a single one broke. It looks cheap but it works. The pain points for lighning cable are in the back, either when conflicting with seat stays and racks or when routed inside the rear fenders.

  • @bergbilch
    @bergbilch 26 днів тому

    Aluminium fork? Isnt that incredible harsh to ride? Otherwise looks extremely janky, to the point where slapping some bigger tires on an old randonneur-ish frame might be the better and cheaper option. Or just go with a sporty trekking bike with a suspension fork as a tour bike at this point^^ Theese companies trying to go with fashion when all they should do is building nice bikes for a purpuose.

    I've had a BOB Yak for probably 30 years. A few years ago the attachment yoke broke (cracks forming in one of the joints--I've overloaded it many times). I was able to purchase a replacement yoke from BOB, and apparently I had a 26" yoke, but have 700c tires, so I 'upgraded' to the longer yoke. When storing the trailer, the shorter yoke would swing all the way into the trailler, but the longer yoke does not so storage isn't quite as neat. I only did one short tour with it, but loaned it to some folks who took it out for about 500 miles. Thanks for the great video, you covered all the details fairly and completely.

Möchtest du Touren machen und ein stabiles Fahrgefühl haben, dann würde ich dir die 56cm Version empfehlen. Möchtest du aber viel auf single Trails fahren und wendiger unterwegs sein, so ist die 54cm Version besser. Am besten kannst du beide abwechselnd fahren und dich dann entscheiden. Sonst kann man aber euch durch das Wechseln des Vorbaus oder Lenkers etwas am Lenkverhalten ändern, jedoch nicht an der Länge des Radstandes... Viel Erfolg!

    you show 7,7 kb (aka 7.7 kg here in the US) as 170 lbs when it's in fact just under 20 lbs; however, 77 kg is just under 170 lbs so it's just a case of the missing decimal (or the equivalent mark for your region).

    I have been using flat pedals since I started biking (which was a year ago), and at the same time refusing clipless systems for commuting safety concerns (horrible bike lane traffic). Just got myself a pair of T8000 for the coming 2024 Desafío China by La Vuelta. It is much much much more grippy than my previous flat pedal. I am still getting adapted to it and hopefully i can race better than last year LOL.

    Thanks for the video. A 20 inch BOB, even more so with fat tire clearance, would be a dream for MTB bikepacking for sure, but that would make it heavier and a greater effort to pull still. Plenty other single wheel trailers have 16 inch wheels also, with 20 inch like on the Tout Terrain Mule seemingly being the exception rather than the rule. Can I ask a favor? If you still own these trailers, can you please take measurements of whether the cargo area is actually 40cm wide on the inside? I'm considering one of these trailers for groceries and as a fellow German you'll surely understand that "approximately 62x40cm" is too vague of an information when one plans to put a water crate or beer crate (or Eurobox for that matter) which are all exactly 40cm on the trailer sideways, and when a bunch of other single wheel suspension trailers including the Aevon models and the Burley Coho miss this extremely important and practical mark by literally a centimeter or two.

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 4 місяці тому

      Hey, at the moment I am making a video about the MULE and the 20" wheel really makes a difference! After having testet it for some time now I find that the perfect trailer for touring is the mix of the MULE and the BOB. I will write you the exact measurements as soon as I find time :) Cheers!

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 4 місяці тому

      So I measured it and the measurements of 62x40 are actually wrong, I should have measured it myself! The Platform has an oval shape and whilst the length is actually 62cm it is only 40cm wide at the widest point! At the bottom it is only 35,5cm wide, then slowly goes to 40 and then at the top it rounds up. But as you can see 01:43 that it does fit a box of bear, maybe mine was a different size…

    • @Turbobuttes
      @Turbobuttes 4 місяці тому

      @@jeremyw.465 Hey, thanks a bunch for the effort. So what you're saying is the sides slant outwards as they go up, and the base platform isn't actually 40cm wide between the sides? That's extremely disappointing and makes for yet another trailer that loses much of its utility because of a few missing centimeters. I can see it fits a crate of beer lengthwise just fine, but I had hoped that I could fit a crate of beer or water sideways at the back and then put another grocery bag in front of it, instead of putting the crate lengthwise and taking up basically the entire trailer. Looking forward to your Mule review (even though it seems like yet another trailer that's a little bit too awkwardly shaped to carry basic standard sized boxes and crates). It's like these trailers are all designed to fit precisely the bag that's sold with them, and not very much else. I don't know what's so difficult about building a single wheel trailer whose platform is actually 60x40cm.

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 4 місяці тому

      @@Turbobuttes yes that is exactly the case with the BOB. Whilst it is sad that they haven’t got the measurements you are looking for they are designed for touring and therefore probably they did try to fit their bags as precisely as possible instead of trying to make it fit such boxes, but yes, if they are close to those measurements why not make it a few centimetres wider… Well does it have to be a single wheel trailer? The Burley Flatbed or Nomad might have the right size?

    Hi! Thank you for this great review! You addressed some of my concerns that were not addressed anywhere else :) I am still wondering about one thing - I won't really need the option to take off the rack but my bike has a carbon frame and no eyelets below the seat - are you aware of any other reasonably priced rack that could be mounted on such a bike? I wasn't able to find any simple rack that would work with my bike but maybe there's something I'm not aware of ;)

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 4 місяці тому

      Hey Mewek, sadly I don't know of any other affordable solution. I can only think of the alloy version of the Tailfin which still costs very much, but sadly the only other option is getting a different bike. There are also racks that you can attach to only your seat post but if its carbon that won't work either and even if it were possible (with an aluminum one) they can't carry much weight (about 10kg), look in my opinion very bad and when you cycle whilst standing up, they tend to want to move sideways and possibly scratch your seat post and might not hold on tightly because the lever is so long. I hope I was of help, cheers!

    • @mewek
      @mewek 4 місяці тому

      @@jeremyw.465 Thank you for the reply! I had a quick conversation with ChatGPT and it seems that the Ortlieb Quick Rack is the cheapest rack that is capable of carrying 15+ kg and fits carbon bikes with dropout eyelets only, Tailfin and Old Man Mountain being two other options which are more expensive. Therefore, the rack is ordered and I'll treat it's quick remove feature as a bonus ;)

    • @jeremyw.465
      @jeremyw.465 4 місяці тому

      @@mewek hey Mewek, I might have misunderstood you, I thought you didn’t have any eyelets at all… do you mean you don’t have eyelets on the upper part of your seat stays, but you have some lower down at the dropouts? Because then you can easily screw in the „FRAME MOUNT PIVOT BEARING M5 or M6“ and install the rack onto them and to your saddle post. But in that case you could also buy a different seat post clamp which offers such eyelets to which you could install any rack (because you said you don’t actually need the ability to take the rack off). If you don’t know what I mean I can send you some links. In case you don‘t have these eyelets at the drop outs there are the seat stay adapters from Ortlieb. But these are not compatible to carbon frames!!!

    First, your video editing skills are excellent. I know how much time it took you to film and edit this video, EXCELLENT!! 2ND: Your bike is dialed in. Ready for some rumble in the jungle or back packing. Have you considered using your factory rims with smoother tire for rides with say 80% road? Thanks for sharing. I have a 2023 Specialized Diverge E5 elite that I have dialed in for bike packing. I bought 45mm tires but the factory rims are only 19-21mm internal width so when mounted i get 44mm. Next upgrade for me same handke bar's as you and new rims with where internal width.

      Hey Robert, thank you for your nice comment! I am not sure how to understand your question about me trying out my old wheels with other tyres correctly. I didn't try out other tyres because for me it was clear I wanted to upgrade both wheels and only then I decided to also change the tyres ;) Why do you only get 44mm when mounting a 45mm tyre on your (19-21mm) rims? I am now swaping to 35mm Schwalbe G-One R tyres. The handlebar is great and if you change your rims or wheel I can only recommend also adding a hub dynamo ;) Cheers!
