2003 Gibson SG Voodoo Deep Dive + Sound Test - The SG Chronicles Episode 4.
In this episode I deep dive into my beloved 2003 SG Voodoo, the first guitar I ever purchased brand new with my own hard earned money. This guitar came about during a very strange time for Gibson, when they were seemingly throwing all sorts of ideas out there and seeing what stuck.
Also would like to give a thanks to this videos sponsor, FRTLZR, for providing some much needed tools to help get this ol' guitars frets shiny and new looking! If interested, you can find their products here:

      Hi, thank you for the comment. Actually the video description is correct. I think you are referring to the 5-way Switch Schematic A - which has the configuration you list, but I installed this using Schematic configuration B, which does have 3 in series at position 6 and 3 in parallel for position 7. Hope that clears up any confusion! Thanks for checking out the video, cheers!

    I had an original cherry '62(the Marriot model) for years..had to let her go a while back...just got this new model in ebony..I'm so glad folk don't like it (there will be less jokers with 'em)...I absolutely adore it...I'm using it with Atomic Rooster and it's BRUTAL through my Supro Black Magik X...nerd p.s. I kept the original knobs from my '62 in a small box ..now they're on this...not a fan of those cream things.. I hear what folk say re LP junior..but this Epi is Badass the minute you strap it on...the shape and balance makes you stand proud.....whereas the LPJ is..well...kinda like a child size guitar...no offence like

    Nice review but I find it weird that during your "build a patch from scratch" section you are going to pick an amp sound without an IR and say it sounds good. It seems these amp models are designed to be used with an IR either the internal or an external. I would turn on an IR when selecting an amp. Those overdrive amps sounded like crap without an IR as any modeler would. Oh by the way did you see if it will play thru a BT speaker? That might be the use of the BT capability.

    • @CompanyGrip
      @CompanyGrip 3 дні тому

      Thanks for checking out the video. Yes, the build a patch section was just purely for demonstration, but, yeah you could turn on an IR for the patch as well if you wanted, or course. Regarding the Bluetooth function, unfortunately, I not found a viable use for it yet. Cheers!

    For some, this little box will be used primarily for practice or quick recording, (just getting an idea down). Putting it on your board for gigging, the presets would give you broader varieties vs. your pedal bank. For $60-$70, you can't complain.

    I believe it is a Ceruse finish. The process you describe is correct. The difference between it and smooth finishes is, I believe there is no grain filler used in the Voodoo. Grain filler usually fills all the grain areas and is clear so that it makes all coats after it smooth. Putting water on wood, like mist the wood down, will make the grain rise. I can't say for sure how they did it, but you can achieve similar results with a Ceruse finish. Also, you can say it is a Cerused guitar. Sandblasted ash bodies have the same appearance. It could be sandblasting, I'm not sure.

    Bought mine in 1976 off a frat brother for $80. All stock except the tuners had been switched out with some off an acoustic guitar. The originals were easily bent, so not surprising. It had seen some playing time, the neck pickup's top edge is rounded off. I put some Schallers, a brass nut and a Leo Quah bridge on it. Plenty of tones thru my Vibro Champ with an Orange Squeezer. Anyone who I ever let play it offered to buy it. Still have it all these decades later, and still no checking.

    BTW the logo on their headstock is their old one.. It's there to highlight their 50th anniversary in the guitar manufacturing business.. I also like their new one better but for me their old logo doesn't make it look cheap especially when I look at the pickups and over all fit and finish but gives it a 70's type of vibe.. I have the progression Strat type which is a version earlier and this new Session T, which definitely looks and sounds as good if not better..

    Is the maple roasted? I tried one recently and some of the frets look like there was a coat of lacquer on them. I’d also think over time the tinted laquor would wear off from your hands. Maybe rosewood version would be better?

    • @CompanyGrip
      @CompanyGrip 13 днів тому

      Hi! I don’t believe the maple is roasted. I’ve yet to played a Godin guitar with a roasted maple neck, but doesn’t mean they don’t exist. I’m a big fan of dark-wood fretboards as opposed to just maple, but admittedly I think it’s just the aesthetics of it. 🤣 Haven’t played a maple board Session T-Pro yet, but I’m sure they do lacquer coat it like Fender does. That just seems to be the way of maple. 🤷‍♂️ But I did have a Rickenbacker once that has such a thick layer of lacquer I couldnt believe it! Never liked the way that guitar felt/played. But loved the looks. Cheers!

    On bass I kind of set a basic price range as being up to $150 is cheap range and squire makes one at this price range. Next level goes to about $400- $500 these are the entry level. Some come with ebony fretboards and reinforced necks. Then $500- $1000 is mid level in which most basses are of good quality and materials. Then $1000-$2000 is high level imports. You can get American Fenders in this range, but that is about it. At $1000 you can start seeing stainless steel frets and EMGs. Guitars seem to follow a similar cost structure, although guitar seems to be cheaper it might run like up to $150 basic, $150-$400 entry level, $400-$800 mid level, $800- $1200 high level, and $1200- $2000 top of the line imports and American made.

    Purpose it could serve is you could swap pickups for each gig, like a 50's rock night you use whichever sounds best, then swap for country night, then swap for metal night. Not that it is common just seems the most applicable way to use the guitar. If you are able to set up more pickups to be used so you could set up some humbuckers, P90s, and single coils then swap each out and compare the sound. Overall, it is a cool looking cheap guitar. If you are able to set up your own pickups to use it will be a cool way to test out pickups.

      Yeah. That’s true. I mean, there are uses for it, I’m just not sure I know how practical they are. Can you imagine getting to a gig, “I FORGOT MY BRIEFCASE FULL OF PICKUPS!!!” 🤣

    • @sinakaedwards2009
      @sinakaedwards2009 13 днів тому

      @@CompanyGrip It has no real advantage as a touring guitar. Only people that could make it practical are demo channels and guitar shops. They might help sell pickups.

    Dude, I am about 3:20 into this video and it sounds like this guitar was made with cheap parts. Cheap parts = needing repair or replacement often.

    I'll stick with my "budget" Les Paul jr. 😉 Nice sound/tone though. Got that Gibson sustain. Is that a Gibson P90 or Epiphone?

      Thanks for checking it out. Hey - I love the LP Junior, it’s certainly gotten way more mainstream shelf life than I think Gibson ever intended! Haha! Gibson P90 in the Epi. It’s a nice guitar, but I don’t know what gap it fills. Cheers!

    Hi there, Can I use this cv out entrance with my zoom A1X Four acoustic FX Pedal, to increase sound effects? Thanks in advance and great video!

    • @CompanyGrip

      Unfortunately, I’m not too familiar with the Zoom A1X pedal. If it has a CV in and you can use that to program and control parameters in the pedal then it should work. But, again, I’m not familiar with the pedal.

    I’ve been an SG guy since I was a kid and saved up my snow shoveling moneys back around 79’ or 1980. I took a ride on the NYC subway to what was then called ‘Music Row’ and walked into Manny’s Music and purchased a beautiful white SG ( it had the small guard like yours and the input jack was on the side of it. ) Sadly I sold it in the mid 80’s to purchase a car. Currently I own 3 SG’s and I love all three of them, none are Custom Shop… maybe one day I will but the cost difference has stopped me from doing it already, obviously lol. The Standard USA models I own play phenomenally with very low action and it’s just tough to justify the up charge on over to a CS, not that I’m saying it’s not a good choice, the deep red finish on the CS models are beautiful, I believe it’s the aniline red which makes the obvious difference. Great video man, I just subbed your channel, thanks for sharing this in depth breakdown 🤙

      Thanks for the sub! Glad you checked out the video too! As you have no doubt realized, I’m a big fan of the SG, so I loved making that video. Custom shop are nice of course, but they can’t build mojo in the shop thankfully! Thanks for sharing your story! Keep rockin! 🤘🏽

    As someone who’s loved vintage Epiphones since they were new guitars, I love the idea of doing USA made Epiphone vintage reissues. That said, this one struck me as an odd choice. Not the Coronet per se, but the late 50s Coronet predates the key changes that made the model a lot cooler for most of us. I would have far rather they’d reissued a 60s version with the asymmetrical body and batwing headstock. I think, even at this price, that version would sell way better. I’d love to buy one to replace the one stolen back in the early 70s. The late 50s models may be historically significant, but the 60s models are the more attractive evolution of the design.

    • @CompanyGrip
      @CompanyGrip 17 днів тому

      Agreed! The next iteration of the Coronet was a better looker.

    Nice in depth review (and, as you say, there’s currently very little out there on this model). I bought this model a month or two ago…so light, comfortable, good looking and great sounding…I play it ALL the time. Extremely fun guitar to just grab and play, and available at an attractive price.

    Your demo videos are great. However, if you decide to try and change it up you could do a deep dive and then a sound demo and then link them. They say the magic length is 10 mins. As far as explanation and everything your channel is one of the best.
