I always thought Lucy Gray's comment about the buttermilk and roses bath was a quip/sarcastic joke. She is very quick with her words and throws open contempt to signs of power and privilege. She shows no sign, that she actually values the rose or its symbolism, she eats it after all, because Snow is just part of the oppressive system that sentenced her to death. She does not want to assimilate to the capitol and such a bath feels like something only an ostentatious capitol person would do, not poor, traveling musicians, which makes the statement ironic to me. She says it like when she is in the zoo cage being interviewed by that reporter, who despite her corrections keeps insisting she's district 12 and she eventually just says something like "if you say so". She thinks it's pointless so waste energy on explaining oneself to people, who don't want to listen.

You hit the nail on the head. I read the first book in 2012 or 2013 and I really did not like the concept. I didn't like the protagonist or the romance or really any other part of the book. It all felt so shallow, way too surface level on just about every front. If the first book had explored some more complex themes like body dysmorphia and incorporated that into the sci-fi or went without the secret society and obligatory heroine schtick I might've liked it. But nothing felt dystopian.

It's not impossible that someone could be both a master manipulator and doing horrible things in order to survive. A person can be or become a master manipulator who does horrible things *_because_* of trying to survive. Having a reason for doing something doesn't necessarily automatically excuse doing that thing or make it something else, or not manipulative, or whatever else. Being a young girl also does not rule out the possibility of being a master manipulator. Young people can also be manipulative, sometimes even more than grown persons specifically because the people around them have an unwillingness to believe a young person capable of such things and a master manipulator will notice that and use it to their own advantage. That being said, I haven't read the book(only watched the movie), so I can't really compare how she was or wasn't changed from page to screen beyond what you've mentioned here or whether or not her character is more or less consistent from one to the other or anything. But I would like to point out that by giving her a compact already filled with poison, we make the idea entirely his - not something that she may or may not have thought up on her own just as much as might or might not have actually understood what he was hinting - and it makes her not culpable for providing herself with the weapon because somebody else put it in her hands, it transforms it into a moral dilemma which we get to watch play out on screen of whether or not to keep and/or actually use that weapon now that it is in her hand....and we see her do so once that goes horribly not according to plan, and again only once absolutely forced to do so because her only options were to either defend herself when cornered or forfeit her own life....that inherently makes someone more likable, to see them reluctant to take those kinds of actions and ultimately regretting doing so and/or only doing so when trapped in a difficult situation that makes us understand why someone might make that decision to do so. It is inherently more heroic, and inherently more a victim of circumstances beyond personal control. And it makes it much less likely that she was, at least in the movie version, merely being manipulative all along.

Uglies is so stupid. My mom watched it, but she generally can’t remember it because it was so boring. I watched the first part with her, but it seemed pretty generic and bland. Also, the premise of the show kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Like all you need to do in this world to stand out is be ugly? Um ok…

Eloise was never a good friend. She was self absorbed. She claimed to want women's rights but didnt care about the women closest to her (feminist icon😂). I didnt like her behaviour during her debut either. Understandably, she wasn't interested in being married off, but she was raised to show some decorum in public and she repeatedly behaved like a petulant child towards the suitors and her family.

Nah, this movie was attrocious. I watched it with my gf. We didn't read the book so we went in head first without any prior knowledge. She immediately called out the dialogue as very empty and weird. Like it was put together by a 13 year old. Blake's laughing didn't do it any justice too. Don't let me get started with the wardrobe because jeez

I hadn't put it together that everyone important that we know about in Snow's life, other than, briefly, Sejanus and Highbottom, is a woman. Growing up it was his family, Gaul, and Lucy Gray; in the end it was Coin and Katniss. We never get much insight into whether he consciously values women differently than men, but it is fascinating that he absorbs so much from the women he was raised around, but casts them aside so easily once he decides he needs control. I do also think it's important that we acknowledge characters aren't people. A character is just a collection of ideas and themes that a real person wanted to talk about

The book was more nuanced (the smoke was harming the environment and sacrificed it for their individuality while the city was the other way around - totally differnt in the movie, there the smoke are the ones who fight against an encroaching species of plant) and Tally was deliberately annoying - because she was a product of brainwashing. The same sort of brainwashing with another flavor we have in 2024 with our media. I liked about Tally that she was a protagonist that wasn't written to be in your face sympathetic - she was written as a self absorbed teenager that learned better, that learned to think for herself and beyond her own needs. Neither the book nor the movie are that deep, clearly. But it was aimed at the typical (USA) teenager who think the world revolves around them. And they aren't that deep either. Most teenager don't have the empathetic capacity to deal with anything more complicated and those who aren't as priviledged either buy the fantasy or roll their eyes.

15:02 I feel like, with the whole bit about how Louis is so closed off to some of these deep questions is truly the reason for this interview. He knows he finds it near impossible to confront his past, but whether consciously or subconsciously he knows he needs to. Yes, sometimes hen Daniel gets under his skin he lashes out, but sometimes he really begins to actually understand his past, like in the first episode of season 2 where he starts crying but he says he wants this, he wants to remember even though it hurts. He knows Daniel will throw him out of his comfort zone and even though his defences come up plenty, it obviously by the end does him a great deal of good. He's asked for this interview because he knows he doesn't like confronting the truth and he also knows this is a problem, and feeling forced to confront his past is the only way he's ever gonna do it.

It’s interesting that even though The Capitol is seen as rich & luxurious, they’re also basically using medieval/barbaric measures when it comes to torturing people. Think back to to the Scold’s Bridle - the iron muzzle for women. Obviously losing your tongue is worse than a device stopping you from talking, but I’m intrigued that The Capitol chose that specific form of punishment & it makes me wonder if there’s any other barbaric practices happening - maybe behind the scenes?

There is so much symbolism in the Hunger Games books that kinda went over my head as a teen. Now, reading TBOSAS, which is equally as rich and strong and complex as the trilogy let me to do a deep dive into these books again and really, I just appreciate Suzanne Collins so so much. And then your video plopped up and it seemed interesting cause it views Snow through a lense I hadn't considered before. I always saw Snow, and all the Capitol kids really, as being "songbirds", used and molded to fit the Capitol's agenda to ensure its survival by instilling their violent thinking patterns and dehumanizing the district people. The kids carry them with them, unleashing them on others. Snow was just one of many manipulated children of the Capitol. While that is not the whole reason he turns out who he is in the end you wonderfully point out the women who shape him on his journey! Snow being just another mutt to Dr. Gaul? Such a good point! He is just another experiment to her, and when that is disrupted (by Clemmie meddling with it) she gets angry for potentially screwing up the result aka Snows development. Coriolanus mother's presence is so elusive in the books too, even to Coriolanus himself. I think it shows how empathy and kindness were always so feeble concepts to grasp for him. He not only had his father's characteristics in appearance but also in character. And while he wishes to be more like his mother he never makes an actual effort to behave differently. And ofc someone like Dr. Gaul latches onto those already existing qualities.. I really love your analysis and connections you point out! I'll definitely check out more of you videos. And I loved the line along of "I don't like to listen to women's characterisation by men". That is so powerful! And it got me thinking.. mens thoughts on women are probably often warped by common biased lenses when they didn't do the work to crack open these biases yet. That thought definitely will stay with me when I encounter certain kinds of comments or stories by men about women in the future.❤ Edit: oh and I almost forgot: I love that you point out that Katniss, someone who is everything Snow isn't ends up being his downfall. Empathy and compassion, humanity triumph over cruelty, dehumanisation, need for control

District 11 is the Black district just as 12 should be the native district. As the two demographics that face some of the worse prejudice it makes sense. The reason why so many people are Black or Native is because they can only date other people in their district with no travel which means little racial variation. 11 also is in the south and they work “plantation” jobs

Every single character is impulsive and they all jump to conclusions and are stubborn. It pisses me off that some issues could've been solved if they had just said something to one another. Like when Jackson is mad at Sookie (I forgot why tbh) and he said they were in a fight but Sookie had NO IDEA he was even mad. No one communicates ever. Rory is spoiled, Lorelei SOMETIMES calls it out.

The horror of an alternative version where Gale and Katniss try to help Lavinia but are also captured. We know that the Capital are completely willing and capable of using their Avoxs to emotionally disturb the Tributes before the games. 74th Hunger Games comes along. Primrose Everdeen is reaped. There is no Katniss to volunteer for her, so she is sent to the Capital... where she inevitably meets her sister, Katniss the Avox who can't even explain what happened or say that she loves her.

@deborahtheexplorer oh I was referring to chapter 8 .er 9 when Katniss intervenes at the whipping " Haymitch appears and trips over a Peacekeeper lying on the ground. It’s Darius. A huge purple lump pushes through the red hair on his forehead."

I think Effie is just commenting that they match as if its a cute coincidence. It's a fashion statement, an aesthetic choice and something a Capital citizen would notice [because these aren't people, it's like having a kettle that matched your fridge]. They want Katniss to recognise him, so they're not going to change anything about him visually [at least until she's seen him].

I definitely think this was something that they shouldn’t have left out of the first couple films. They mention it once in the first film, but the avoxes really do heighten the cruel brutality of the capital and expand the audience’s understanding of the complicity of those who continue to reside there. A very significant moment for Katniss’ character in the books was her moment with the avox girl in her room. The solidarity between them and Katniss’ guilt at not being able to save her… it was so haunting.

This was one of the most horrific parts of panem it took a long time for my edgy preteen self to understand how messed up it is. Like imagine losing one of your biggest meathods to express yourself

Not even just the social aspects of it, in the book they mention how they swallow weird when eating if I recall right, so they lost all form of communicating besides head nodding and hand signals, which they aren't even allowed to use, but they also are so horribly mutilated they have struggles with eating and drinking since the tongue is used for pushing things correctly, so more than likely there have been many avoxes who have died just due to choking when allowed food.

Putting them in places where they're seen it's just an way to make the tributes fear but also another way to punish the avoxes themselves. Shame and humiliation can be huge forms of abuse

The thing is, just like hungergames, katniss is not very "likeable" in the first book either. She is a young teenager that only cares about survival and the survival of her family. I did not personally care for katniss at the first until she started to grow and actually stand up for herself. Point is Catching Fire is when you get to know Katniss Everdeen. Tally, you dont get to actually like and enjoy the series till you get into the Pretties book, she is way more powerful and a true rebel in that book. Then Katniss everdeen ever was. Not even mockingjay compares to the things she went through to prove beauty is not the end all be all to life and people are worth more than just how they look.

I think what the show makers intended by making the titular characters "annoying" is their way of saying "we support women's wrongs" which was revolutionary at the time compared to the impossible societal imposted by society on women which is reflected in both Emily and Luke. While Emily always rejected Lorelei, Emily was just a product of her time, which is a mother who just wanted the best for her daughter who never dared to break out of her bubble have the awareness to actally understand Lorelei so she thought she was fixing her by patronizing her, while despite how Luke gets frustrated by Lorelei, he shows her the acceptance and support that her mother never gave her, which is what she was always looking for. Rory having also suffered from the lack of support from her dad echoes the same self reliance that Lorelei had passed down to Rory making it no coincidence that she would repeat her mother's mistakes.
