The horror of an alternative version where Gale and Katniss try to help Lavinia but are also captured. We know that the Capital are completely willing and capable of using their Avoxs to emotionally disturb the Tributes before the games. 74th Hunger Games comes along. Primrose Everdeen is reaped. There is no Katniss to volunteer for her, so she is sent to the Capital... where she inevitably meets her sister, Katniss the Avox who can't even explain what happened or say that she loves her.
I definitely think this was something that they shouldn’t have left out of the first couple films. They mention it once in the first film, but the avoxes really do heighten the cruel brutality of the capital and expand the audience’s understanding of the complicity of those who continue to reside there. A very significant moment for Katniss’ character in the books was her moment with the avox girl in her room. The solidarity between them and Katniss’ guilt at not being able to save her… it was so haunting.
Putting them in places where they're seen it's just an way to make the tributes fear but also another way to punish the avoxes themselves. Shame and humiliation can be huge forms of abuse
This was one of the most horrific parts of panem it took a long time for my edgy preteen self to understand how messed up it is. Like imagine losing one of your biggest meathods to express yourself
Not even just the social aspects of it, in the book they mention how they swallow weird when eating if I recall right, so they lost all form of communicating besides head nodding and hand signals, which they aren't even allowed to use, but they also are so horribly mutilated they have struggles with eating and drinking since the tongue is used for pushing things correctly, so more than likely there have been many avoxes who have died just due to choking when allowed food.
God, what happened to Darius is heartbreaking especially when you realize this all mirrors real life. Snow's family when they were still rich also had avoxes
I want a hunger games book but in the point of view of an avox! I hate how the movies underdeveloped the avoxs because in the books they are soo important to katniss story!
LOVE THIS VIDEO first of all I love how you handled talking about this subject, and second of all THG was my biggest obsession back in the day and I’m so glad that people still appreciate it for all that it is and we can still have these new and nuanced conversations about it!
Regarding Darius i don't think he had his hair dyed; im pretty sure Katniss described him before as a young *still older than her and Gale* redhead and Effy called a matched because of it. Correct me if im wrong though
In chapter 15 of catching fire katniss states: “another avox who also has red hair…” and then she realises it’s Darius. His hair was probably dyed to match lavinia’s.
@deborahtheexplorer oh I was referring to chapter 8 .er 9 when Katniss intervenes at the whipping " Haymitch appears and trips over a Peacekeeper lying on the ground. It’s Darius. A huge purple lump pushes through the red hair on his forehead."
I think Effie is just commenting that they match as if its a cute coincidence. It's a fashion statement, an aesthetic choice and something a Capital citizen would notice [because these aren't people, it's like having a kettle that matched your fridge]. They want Katniss to recognise him, so they're not going to change anything about him visually [at least until she's seen him].
District 11 is the Black district just as 12 should be the native district. As the two demographics that face some of the worse prejudice it makes sense. The reason why so many people are Black or Native is because they can only date other people in their district with no travel which means little racial variation. 11 also is in the south and they work “plantation” jobs
Also would love to see a video on District 11 and black characters in THG. Oddly enough it’s one of the things I haven’t seen talked about over the years and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it
It’s interesting that even though The Capitol is seen as rich & luxurious, they’re also basically using medieval/barbaric measures when it comes to torturing people. Think back to to the Scold’s Bridle - the iron muzzle for women. Obviously losing your tongue is worse than a device stopping you from talking, but I’m intrigued that The Capitol chose that specific form of punishment & it makes me wonder if there’s any other barbaric practices happening - maybe behind the scenes?
I'm genuinely interested in this video, but i do wonder why you wrote the word "tongue" like "tounge"? I thought it was a typo but it's on the title and the thumbnail. Is there a reason?
hiii! I genuinely all of my life thought the tongue was spelled that way untill today😭, it seems thats it's a common misspelling in English vs American English. Whoops, thank you for pointing it out!
Imagine working 5 years without seeing sunlight
Horrifying tbh 🫤

@Cakebraincat
imagine leaving life without ever tasting food again
I've always wanted to know more about the avoxes, I feel like they weren't explored as much about within the books so i'm seated
wanted to know about them

Just now realizing that Lavinia's name is probably a reference to a character from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus whose tongue gets cut out.
