Flogging was removed from the Army Regulations by 1861. The last floggings were members of Company D, 3rd US in Centerville, VA the day before First Manassas . Their crime was desertion. They received the prescribed number of lashes (which were performed by the drummers) and branded with a "D" for deserter and cashiered from the Army.

While the depletion of the massive herds sounds tragic, the reality is that the nations interior could never have been settled and farmed if these giant herds still existed.

@bubbajones5905 That's true. That's why Yellowstone National Park was created just when it was needed most, and a few private herds helped save the species, too

@marktweet7395 That would be hard to prove. But from what I've read in multiple books, the Native Americans were acutely aware of the need not to wipe out the herds, while the European-Americans came to that conclusion much later

Eastern Idaho is also part of Yellowstone National Park. I've read a lot of the stat's regarding the culling of the US bison in Dee Brown's 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.' and Alan W Eckert's 'A Sorrow In Our Hearts.' The Life of Tecumseh.' The figures suggested of flagrant, needless, killing of these magnificent, bovine creatures is harrowing and extremely disturbing.

    • @chaptersofwisdom
      @chaptersofwisdom 17 днів тому

@manosparavida3551 Thanks for the reminder about Idaho. Last time I was in Yellowstone we drove through Idaho Falls. The near extinction of the bison came from a combination of overhunting for commercial usage, food warfare against the Native Americans, and unrestricted sport shooting. A tragedy that almost became the rising USA's worst crime against nature

The problem I have with Robert Redford is that he is so vain he never has a hair out of place, so he looks like an ad for a hair dresser. If had overcome his vanity he could have been a great actor as apposed to a good one.

According to the book "Crow Killer," the Crazy Woman was a real person who had settled in the Wolf Tail Valley. After her children were killed and her husband taken captive, she remained in her cabin. Liver Eatin' Johnson, Del Gue and Anton Sepulveda were among the mountain men who "avenged" her. One popular story was that the mountain man known as "Hatchet Jack" was actually her husband who had gone insane after being scalped and tortured by the Blackfoot Indians when they took him away. It was known that Hatchet Jack had been scalped at some point in his life and that he was mentally unbalanced. Johnson refers to this when he tells the Crazy Woman that he cannot find any sign of her husband, but that he might return if he escaped from the Indians.

For those who liked Jeremiah Johnson, here are other movies. "Mountain Men" starring Charlton Heston and Brian Keith. "Man In The Wilderness" with Richard Harris, similar to the Revenant. Both were about the mountain Man, Hugh Glass. Neither was accurate about the real life encounters of Hugh Glass. Also one to watch, but very hard to find, "Sacred Ground" with Jack Elam. Last but not least is The full series of "The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams" Starring Dan Hagerty and Denver Pyle." Both seasons of this Wonderful TV series. Hours of entertainment at a great value. I bought a copy in Walmart!!!! Can also be found online. Hope this helps for those interested in mountain Man lore and life. All the best and may God bless.

A fine commentary the details I was unaware of. I saw the movie in the Spring of 1973 and it had a lasting affect on me, as a troubled 18 year old. It spurred me to want to see the Northwestern territory, and I began acquiring camping gear. I even bought a 50 caliber muzzle loader, that I still have to this day. A friend and I attended the World's Fair in Spokane by driving across the country, and we camped in territory around the story line places. People would talk to us about the Liver Eating Johnson history of the area, as it was freshened by the event of the movie. Such was common knowledge in that territory, but that was 50 years ago.

@mary5292 None of this is AI generated, I'm just learning my "youtube video" voice. :) The story is based on the text from the book "Crow Killer". And yes, Paints His Shirt Red represents the Crow leaders with whom Johnson made peace later. I'm getting better at clarifying the difference between the book(s) and film, but unfortunately this video has caused its share of confusion. Thanks for taking the time to write a comment

My interpretation was that the major had lost his mind due to a combination of syphilis and alcoholism. I agree, as a plot device his immediate suicide conceals Dunbar’s orders to Fort Sedgwick. As story element I always felt the major represented the spiritual decay of the “civilized” world that Dunbar was about to depart from.

When I was a dogsledder, I slept many times out in the cold in winter in Minnesota. Dug holes in the ice to water the dogs and battled -70F temps one trip. It sounds glamorous to be outside and "get through" those times, but I can't say it was "fun." It was something else...don't know what to call it, but there just was something about it that is missing in today's society. I think it's the simpleness of it. Thanks for reading.

@patsyshannon Funny how we romanticize that lifestyle and watch films about it from our heated living rooms. Think I'll go re-watch "The Revenant" now ...

Because every white man in the movie, except Dunbar, is crazy. All the Indians are normal Leave it to Beaver neighborhood people living in tee pees and speaking Sioux (or some other language?)

@classicgunstoday1972 A couple of groups were overly demonized in the story and I'll have videos coming out about that. I suspect that will anger people who love the film (like I actually still do) but haven't looked too deeply into the controversy. Read the books and you'll see what I mean

@@chaptersofwisdom the movie had good cinematography, music and some good action scenes...but it’s almost like watching a PC cartoon for three hours. Very 1990s. The Pawnee, I think, were usually at the mercy of the Sioux contrary to what appears in the movie.

Jordan Peterson? Really? He is more delusional than Fambrough 😆

@adamdavis8082 I always considered him a tradcon but a quick Internet search reveals he's a classical liberal. That makes him more center than the extremes we often see these days. Still he has a lot of good ideas

@chaptersofwisdom he has done some interesting things in his field back when he was interested in science. But ever since has accepted his title as MAGA talking head, he has used his expertise in psychology to fool people into thinking he's an expert when parroting extreem right wing talking points in subjects that have nothing to do with his field of study. Just like if hitler had stuck to painting, if peterson had just stuck to His area of expertise, it would be a lot less destructive for everyone around him. Lol

Peterson has helped countless men not ‘end’ themselves. Perhaps he is more a scholar than you are aware. Don’t let political hatred blind you to things you can learn from another person.

@madmeh2929 it sounds like some of his psychological theories are important to you. And that's fine. Again.. he has said some interesting things regarding areas of his expertise. If he would stick to those areas of his expertise, that would be fine. However, after gaining popularity from being an interesting "anti-feminist", he become a conservative mouthpiece. Now, peterson pretends to be an expert on things like climate change, vaccines, military strategy, and economics. And since he has a PHD, people assume he knows what he is talking about when he meanders outside of his field of study. I would just call perterson an opinionated guy, but he parrots political narratives, and a lot of those narratives contradict the actual experts in those areas.

By ending himself and not documenting Dunbar's orders he is setting the stage for Dunbar's confrontation with the army in the future. They do not know his identity but do know he is in the company of Indians considered hostile wearing garb unlike that of an army officer and more like that of an associate of the hostiles. Appearances Dunbar cannot dispute or prove otherwise. The major was in a remote outpost far away from the cataclysmic battles to the east. He's an alcoholic, incontinent and depressed by all of those factors. Dunbar's mission and normalcy in comparison to his is unbearable.

@johngaither9263 Those are some good points, too. Dunbar was already on his way to switching sides, when the soldiers shot his horse, beat him up and threatened the Sioux, he had to make a choice of who to betray. We'll look at this transition more in another video. Thanks for sharing

@m.jenkins8503 The amount of collateral damage in the current war makes it a lot more controversial than this battle described in "Crow Killer", though there were other events that are more comparable (1873's massacre canyon)
