"Silver Spire Mountain (“the Spire”) is a treacherously dangerous natural monument, feared and respected by the regional inhabitants. Clad in perilous ice and snow but seething with volcanic activity within, its sheer cliffs and lava pits deterred humanoid presence and activity even before it was rumoured to be inhabited by infernals and undead. But for one man, beckoned by the plume of smoke p...

Great video, Todd! I've kinda been away from the BFRPG scene for a while now, but getting back into it with the family and will likely be binging on your stuff again! Do you have a video comparing the 3rd edition vs the 4th? I'm on the fence about picking it up due to having 4 copies of 3rd already. Thnx! 👊🤓
Hey, Ray. I don't, but I highly recommend this one from Wes @DMTalesTTRPG : ua-cam.com/video/iiJX6HM8Kxk/v-deo.html
I wasn't a social worker but I was a taxi driver back in the day.. yep, it has a way of working its way out.
Awesome you’re back! I looove the new alternate covers!!!! I ordered both from Amazon immediately!!!! Just love em! Please write more !!!!
Thanks, Joe! My second book, "Beneath the Silver Spire" is now on the Downloads page on basicfantasy.org. I don't know when Chris will send it for print; there are quite a few books in the queue. My third book, "Nightmare Voyager," was posted to The Workshop in the site Forums this week. It will probably take a year or two until it gets to Amazon/Lulu/DriveThruRPG.
Perfect timing, I have really missed your videos. You bring a calm that is becoming more and more uncommon online. Also I skimmed through your new adventure release, I love how open it is with a focus on relationships and social interactions.
Aw, thanks! I saw you posting on the Forum today. I love seeing people involved with the project. As for my module, for me it's always about the personalities. I like a game where even I don't know the outcome because so much depends on how people choose to work together, or conflict.
Great to have you back. I've been missing your metered enthusiasm for the hobby.
Thanks! "Metered enthusiasm" -- I like the sound of that! It's definitely a different energy from a lot of UA-camrs, so my hope was that it would resonate with people like me. I'm grateful to be missed!
I'm glad that you are feeling better!
Thanks! It's been a hard year, but I hope I have a lot more of them left in me.
My copy of both sat in the hobby shop until I bought them in '87.
I used to accept the granola hippy type druid, but over the decades I have come to a different perspective. I blame anthropology and literature. But the notion that animals are different than humans is a notion that is more modern than not. When you wear the monkey mask are you like the monkey, or do you become the monkey? The similarities between animism and the system of concordance-opposition we see in medieval astrology is no mere coincidence to my mind. What gods of the ancients didn't reference the natural world? "Nature Gods" is a kind of silly distinction really. "Old Gods" I can see because we can see shifts and displacement in peoples as outside groups move into territory and [ahem] "replace" those already present (it wasn't always genocidal as we see with the Bom Santo Cave Necropolis or the Amesbury Archer, but I don't wish to make the exception the rule here). Are druids in the magi archetype, or are the closer a priesthood? In reality nobody in the Neolithic or ancient thought of this natural balance/preservation stuff. The priesthood or perhaps "Druid" saught to assist their people, their ethnos in exploiting the natural resources in order to live and thrive. That said, we have hard evidence that these people would thin heavier woods so as to expand the forest edge, which has a greater variety of resources and hosts a wider range of animal life. At any rate, in a game it all depends on what you are trying to set up and the stories players will create by interacting with that. Thanks for the wonderful video production and for sharing your thoughts.
Morgansfort...maybe Morgan Ironwolf from Moldvay BX?
I'd have to ask Chris Gonnerman, but that's a good catch.
People can do ANYTHING they can get away with. Post Trump Reality
Sorry but the artwork is horrible and mismatched. I think this scares people away as not being serious. Just MHO.
Alrighty then.
God I love this game so much!
Just ordered this, looks superb and exactly whatbI was looking for. I play solo, this is perfect for solo play to flesh things out. On a side note, I work as a psychiatric nurse here in the UK. So all the best from across the pond.
Thanks for the kind comments, Carl. And thank you for the work you do.
What a refreshing video. Here's to you Todd. I wish I could manage Linux ; sadly I am technologically impaired.
Thank you! Linux gets friendlier every year. My books were written with LibreOffice running on Solus Linux. It's very quick and easy to install.
Its insane how cheap they are😮
Cheer~~~liability or tendency to change.😊
I'd love to see more of these comparisons... and a stroll down memory lane.
I've been thinking about making another, but I wasn't sure if there was interest, so thanks for writing!
Some good thoughts here. I like the idea of specialists in cities that could custom make an infused item, provided the PCs both deliver the required materials AND pay the cost for labor. I’m thinking for the PCs to make an order for a particular item, they might wait a month for every 1000 gp in cost after the materials are delivered. (Quest hooks, anticipation, etc…) AA1 has an adventure called Merilla’s Magic Tower by Rob Pinnell with a Mage who makes magic items. Definitely demonstrates the risk in dealing in objects of such power. I love how your videos allude to a document but provide some of your own thoughts (rather than ’reactions’) on the topic. Thanks for the brain food!
I'm glad it was valuable to you. Having played in some item-heavy games since COVID, I've been surprised at how often I forget the items I have. Many are never used once I record them on my inventory. The easier they are to acquire, the less they mean.
Is there a Gold Dragon in BFRPG? I found a reference to them in one of the Field Guides but no stats or info... anyone know?
Yes! But in 4th edition they were 'renamed' to Cloud Dragons as part of moving away from the OGL. In fact, all dragons are now designated by their environment and colour, just like in 1981 BX. For example: Desert Dragon (Blue Dragon), Forest Dragon (Green Dragon), Ice Dragon (White Dragon), etc.
Could you make a volume 2 with the illusionist, ranger, paladin, druid, etc? Then volume 1 would contain the core, volume 2 with the supplements.
Are you referring to the Basic Fantasy Core Rulebook?
@@toddlyons the illusionist, ranger, paladin, druid, etcetera are not in the cool rule book. They are supplements on the BF site. You did such a great job with the first compendium, it was just an idea for a second edition.
Thanx Todd!! I ran Burkhard as an NPC in a solo game and he put more people to sleep (read: cracked their head open with his staff) than all the characters including the fighters. I absolutely loved playing him, the only change I made was to make his 'staff' pretty much a broken tree branch that did 1d6 damage instead of 1d4. A snippet courtesy of Soujor. Burkhard De Groot is now up! (14,5) Burkhard forgetting he is a mage, moves up to the goblin harrassing Joel and swings his thick staff at its head. It lands with a resounding crack breaking its neck and killing it. [Burkhard De Groot]:"My special sleep spell!!"
Hah! I love it! That does sound like exactly the staff he would found / made / yanked off a tree. One of the best things about writing this book is hearing how people take these characters and run with them. I'm smiling ear to ear. Thanks Dave.
Damn, gottem. Well said.
I'm so impressed at the quality of writing in this book. I'm a massive fan of BFRPG, and this feels like a serious step up for the game.
Thank you! It was a long time coming. I'd thought about what it might include for decades, but never made the time to start. I was very ill when I finally wrote it. Sickness gave me the time. A lot of hatred and gratitude poured out of me, depending on the day. Chrysogon is an amalgamation of many people who harmed me. But there are also kind and funny people whose aspects I sprinkled across many biographies.
I am using square bases from warhammer and garage sale stickers from dollar tree for basic tokens I need. Like +2 to hit, In cover, etc.
Do Burkhardt DeGrootd!
Zeph must be fun at town tavern events lol Love this video :)
I need to get this on my channel!
Awwww! As a subscriber to your channel, I'm well aware of the terrifyingly large queue of un-reviewed books on your shelves that are in line ahead of this one... which was only published in March. So no worries. I know you're busy. But I am a bit shocked that only one channel (Rooooooooooll For Turaco) has reviewed it so far.
@@toddlyons I’ll get to it!
Cool beans
Well, I found out my vision is NOT great. :)
I like how in Matt Colville's setting only the most powerful and connected groups have curated collections
I agree it makes a lot of sense.
@@toddlyons and it was a great scene!
Your creation of NPCs is fantastic! There's clearly a lot of writing skill evident and it's super cool that you shared it with the rest of the community!
Thank you very much! I had the character and presentation ideas in my head for decades, but it was my discovery of the Basic Fantasy project that made it possible to develop and distribute the work as non-profit. The words alone wouldn't have been sufficient without the art and production skills of my colleagues.
That cover is amazing.
Ender did a great job. The artists in this project are a treasure.
Is the BFRPG website down? I cannot seem to connect.
Should be back up now.
This sounds excellent! I look forward to trying this out! Thanks very much for the great work. ✌🏼👽
My pleasure. Hope you enjoy it!
I don't think the answer to the question of why we fight is any big mystery. All anyone has to do is look at other communities, because the same thing is happening all over. It's a matter of having an outside perspective on other hobbies - such as watching the destruction of the comics industry or the Star Wars franchise and it has been a huge problem I've heard with cycling enthusiasts and the home knitting and sewing community- and realizing it's all the same thing. It's people putting politics above everything else. If you gather with people over any common interest but then end up fighting each other over politics, it's inevitable that it will end up destroying that common interest in the process.
Sad but true.
White Box FMAG is the best. I simply adore the system.
Definitely my favourite OD&D.
Great video as always! I know Illusion magic isn't to your liking, but having played one on AD&D 1e I'd be interested in your views after a deeper delve. 🌈🧙🏻♂️
I wish I had the opportunity to observe a skilled Illusionist the way I've played with skilled Druids. It's likely that my failure to appreciate certain classes is due to a failure of my own imagination.
@@toddlyons It's always better to see that in action. I see illusions as a Sun Tzu way of fighting: warfare is all about deception
I love the idea of "Slow Potion" as a spell, where in it would extend the duration of a consumed potion. Thanks for the idea. I know you just misread that but it's still a good idea for a handy little spell.
Thanks for saying so. That might be the first time that an error I left in (why pretend to be perfect?) ended up as value-added content.
House full of canine familiars!! :D
I don't know we normalized a 'pack of four' back at the beginning of married life, but here we are 25 years later with a different set of 4 dogs. But I love them.
Amazing video and this art is really worth celebrating - and kudos to his BFRPG community participation. Really loving these artist showcasing videos. Thanks Todd :)
I'm continuously impressed by the talent and dedication that this project inspires. People will work much harder for love than money.
Love this, and John is a great guy who I am glad to know!
He's a gem of the open source RPG community. And a super-nice guy.
