I'm happy you also like Sonic 4. However, I actually think the actual Sonic 4 is the real Sonic 4, and not just by name alone. I disagree when people say Mania is the real Sonic 4 not only because of how unoriginal it is, but also because of how similar it is to the Genesis games. To me, Sonic 4 is supposed to be the classic games but evolved. By that, I mean it should feel familiar, as in control similarly and share the same gameplay style, but also build from it by adding new things. I don't consider Advance to be this because it is simply on handheld, whereas to me, Sonic 4 should be on home console as it just seems more logical, and similarly with Triple Trouble, as the screen crunch changes the gameplay a lot. Sonic and Knuckles is too similar to Sonic 3, and plus, we all know they were meant to be one game. Extreme is too much 3d. Surely, Sonic 4 should be 2d, so the gameplay is too different, so no way is SA1. There was also that minigame Sonic into Dreams, which had some 2d, but was also a showcase of how 3d Sonic could play. Similarly, Rush and Rivals has very different gameplay to the classics, and we don't even talk about Boom. Superstars is purely a classic Sonic game modernised for current gen consoles, kinda like an Episode 3 or sonic 5 even. Triple Trouble feels like Sonic 4 that would have come out if the Genesis was still supported by then, but after Sonic and Knuckles, they shifted focus to the 32x, the Saturn, and then the Dreamcast. To me, Sonic 4 feels like a 2d Sonic game on the Sega Saturn, released between 3d Blast and SA1, mainly because of the homing attack and graphics, so feels very faithful to that era, especially Episode 1, as Episode 2 looks more HD. While I do understand its shortcomings, I don't understand all the hate the game got, as it really feels to me like the NSMB series of Sonic. I get that the physics are not accurate or fun, but I never had an issue with them, as I never got stuck or stood sideways on loops. Overall, I think the homing attack was a neat addition to the classic moveset as it just made the game flow better. Also, I felt the zones had new and interesting gimmicks and were arguably more fresh and original than Mania, but at the same time, they were special twists on previous zones to feel more familiar. The number of levels are also the exact same as the other classic Sonic games, probably because it was originally a mobile release, and they were also trying to replicate the lock on technology. I do wish it was more original, but overall, I felt it was a logical sequel. Also, I don't consider Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix to be part of the classic series because of the time travel and tether gimmicks, making them play too differently. If Episode 3 did come out, I'm sure it would have surpassed Sonic 3k as the level design which both Episodes have are underrated in my opinion and are better than what Sonic 1 and 2 has to offer respectively.
