You can see the class projects and register at the above. I would note that Cabinet of Curiosities is also running again, which I cannot recommend highly enough. Tricia taught me everything I know about stumpwork and it is a superb class.
As I wondered about what to comment for the giveaway I started looking into the etymology of the word “mother” and I thought I’d share my findings with the class.
Did you know that the word mother is a cousin of the word “matrix”?
To be precise, the words are etymological doublets of each other. An etymological doublet is simply two words that have the same etymological root but came to their current word forms through different etymological pathways. Commonly illustrated like a family tree, so to continue the metaphor: cousins!
Mother and Matrix are both Proto-Indo-European at their root: mātēr.
Mātēr is thought to have developed from the nursery word “ma”. Combined with the suffix “-ter” (which essentially turns a verb in a noun. Like the “-er” in “thatcher”), mātēr simply meant mother. It was then loaned to Old German, then passed down to Old English, then it finally became the Modern English word for the giveaway today. All while retaining its original meaning.
As for “matrix”- the original mātēr was loaned to Latin (māter: mother, then mātrīx: dam, womb), which then evolved to old French (matrice: a pregnant animal), and on to English (matrix: 1. A metaphorical place where something is given form, 2. [math] a rectangular arrangement of numbers or terms, most commonly recognized in “political compasses” or high school calculus)
Conceptually, you can see how these two words are related in their meanings as they both refer to a source (of pearls, organic life, concepts) and a place of development (an oyster shell, a womb, a graph).
Additionally, you might recognize the Latin “māter” from the widely used phrase “alma mater”.
I love developing a broader understanding of the concepts represented by words through the cultures of those words’ ancestors and relatives. It’s amazing how different ancestries focused on different angles of the same concept: mother!
Okay, I think I’ve typed the giveaway word enough haha
Thank you for all the wonderful work you do 🤎
This is superb - words feel rather inadequate but thank you for such a detailed and thought provoking response. I've frequently referred to my parents using the Latin mater and pater, but never thought much about the why behind it. Language is an endlessly fascinating study and I enjoyed your comment more than I can express.
Congratulations - you are the winner of one of the palette sets! Please send me your mailing address using the contact form here: katie-strachan.com/contact
@@katiestrachanembroidery Hurray!
I'm so thankful for my Mother. She's strong, brave and lives life to the fullest. She loves her family and it shows in everything she does. I love the colors you are using in the Britomart Sampler. Your joy and love for what you do always shines through in you Flosstubes.
Thank you! Your mother sounds a lot like my own - a treasure to be cherished.
Another fabulous video Katie! I look so forward to them! ❤❤
Love everything you've shown us! You're an incredible stitcher & I've learned so much from you! Thank you!
I was sewing when I was 7 years old. I have a cabinet in my home that holds the very first 2 sewing machines my mother had! They are a treasure to me since those are the ones I learned to sew on. Beneath them hold many quilts I've made. Every time I look at it I smile thinking how grateful I am to have had the mother I did. She has now passed away. I think of her often. She taught me how to crochet and cross stitch too. We were best friends and did so many things together.
Thank you for all you've taught me too Katie! ❤ And continue to do so.
Take care.
Thank you! Mothers are a gift to be treasured!
My mother is not a stitcher so she is always amazed to see my latest projects. Can't wait to start the valentine project!
Thank you! You're going to love it - it's so fun
My mother was my best friend, my biggest fan, my harshest critic and everything else everyday that she lived. I loved her dearly everyday we had together. Another wonderful video. I haven't missed one since I found you on here. Happy Stitching 😊🪡🧵🌻
Thank you! And your comment is beautiful - mothers are everything, even when they're quite casually pointing out your flaws. Mine is my biggest fan, but also I think the person in my life who sees me most clearly, good and bad.
@@katiestrachanembroidery thank you
My mother is my best friend. I won the lottery! Love your gorgeous embroidery. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
There's something truly precious about a wonderful and cherished mother - it's the greatest of gifts!
I enjoyed your latest video. I love the way you include your Mother in almost every flosstube episode. I love the Otter ornament. So adorable.
Thank you so much - my mother is wonderful and I'm so lucky to have her!
Your stitching and you are a treat for the eyes and soul! ❤
You are the kindest, sweetest soul Sarah! Thank you for watching!
I love those carnations. So beautiful. The cutout basket is so beautiful. Thanks for showing so many lovely things. Another fun visit.
Thank you! The carnations might be one of my favorite things on this piece - I think the pinks and lime green are just the most stunning combination
Mother of pearl beautiful things to have in a sewing box. Thanks for the video enjoyed seeing your sampler!
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait to see the sequin tutorial.
I always look forward to your videos.
Thank you
Mother
Thank you!
Excited to see Britomart getting closer to the end. Those are my colors. It was a delightful surprise to see Jackie’s mother of pearl. I am a huge fan and have many of her pieces.
Fingers crossed it's close! I truly can't wait to see how the whole thing comes together
Very encouraging video. Loved seeing progress made on the Britomart sampler. And I should have said this long ago, THANK YOU for the Notes that you put with each of your videos. it allows viewers to just watch and enjoy the video without having to stop and jot things that you mention for completing Items. It was nice to hear also that you and your mother take time to stitch together. My Mom is no longer interested - says she can't see well enough. I have one sister who never sewed - preferred masking tape and safety pins for clothing adjustments/ repairs and another sister that would likely stitch but just doesn't have time til she retires in a few years.
Thank you - I'm so glad they're appreciated. They take forever and sometimes I wonder if anyone ever reads them!!! And yes, my mom and I stitch together quite regularly. I stitch more than she does, but my parents live just a few miles away and we're a close family, so we sit together with our stitching often, and it is a special bond.
My mother loved mother of pearl. The pieces are beautiful.
Aren't they just? Jackie is so talented
Wonderful video and love your progress on the Humility chart. Your Britomart is stunning and I just loved be your enthusiasm for it. The 2020 Prairie Schooler is awesome! The Mother of pearl items are so beautiful. My Mom was not a sewer but she loved to knit. She loves to see what I make all the time. We love seeing your Mom on the videos!
Thank you! It's been really exciting for me watching this all come together piece by piece, truly a labor of love. And excitement, and enthusiasm!
The mother of pearl floss keeps are stunning. Fingers and toes crossed😂😂😂
Good luck!!
Beautiful mother of Pearl items! Can’t wait for the sequin tutorial!
Thank you!
Marvelous video at usual! Received my Cardinals Kin kit and will be stitching tout suite! My mother will celebrate her 95th birthday next week!
Enjoy! And the happiest of birthdays to your mother - what a milestone!
You are a truely amazing, talented young woman, can’t wait to see what you create ❤️ your mother must be very proud ❤️
Thank you so much!
I love mother of pearl. Thank you Katie for another great video and the Santa conversion. I’ve started my sixth prairie Santa for this year. I choose my own colors too. I love the deeper Victorian reds and greens myself, but I will stitch the next one using your colors.
Thank you! And enjoy - this was a departure from my usual take on the PS Santa, but I think a fun and successful one. I'll be back to the darker and more muted tones in future, but for a one time adventure I definitely enjoyed it!
I have stitched a number of Jackie,s designs. Love her Mother of pearl threadwindres.
She is fabulous!
The mother of pearl pieces are very lovely.

Mothers and mother of pearl are definitely wonderful!
I thoroughly enjoy watching your floss tubes. You derive so much joy from your work and it’s completely reflected in your video. Thank you for the projects you stitch and bring to us for viewing. You are inspiring! The mother of pearl bits and bobs remind me of my grandmother. She always had interesting sewing accoutrements.
Thank you! I do truly love my stitching, and it does bring me great joy

Just gorgeous, right? I love Jackie's wonderful stitchy accessories.
Hi Katie! Great video, as usual. All your projects are so beautiful! Your mother of pearl basket is definitely beautiful! Looking forward to your next video in order to see whatever is coming today that you teased about!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for your inspiration and education. My mother taught me to stitch, and I treasuer the few pieces I have that she did. She would have been 100 this year.
Thank you! And that's a wonderful legacy for a mother to leave - my mother taught me how to sew and it's such valuable knowledge.
I am so late in watching and commenting on your lovely video! The Britomart Sampler is just gorgeous and I eagerly look forward to seeing it when it is done❤ Your excitement over everything you are. Stitching is contagious and I love that you can share your experiences with your mom! It’s always lovely to hear about the time you have together. I am hoping to add some mother of pearl treasures to some of my fancy work collections. Thanks again for keeping me company today.
Thank you Susan! It is always a pleasure to spend time with you as well - I'm selfishly so glad you're flosstubing regularly again, it left such a hole in my viewing life!!!
Love the Mother of Pearl baskets!
You can see why I couldn't resist!!
Jackie’s mother of pearl items are beautiful!
They are utterly gorgeous!
I'm looking forward to the sparkly tomato tomato girl. That sounds fun. And I love my mother
It is! Adding sequins to a finish is so fun and easy
Your Britomart Sampler is just stunning! I think your stitching is the most beautiful stitching I have ever seen! I also love your ornaments! My mother was a beautiful sewer, knitter, needle pointer, and cross-stitcher. She has been gone 12 years, and I miss her everyday! I always enjoy seeing your mother on your videos!
Thank you so much - that's so incredibly kind of you!
My kit for the Wonderful Life drum came so fast! Than you! Can’t wait to get started!! And try silk floss for the 1st time 😊
Enjoy - stitching with silk is such a pleasure, I think it makes stitching even more pleasant and joyful!
My mother means the world to me! She is not a stitcher but has always encouraged me in my stitchy journey.
My mother has always been a huge support to me as well and it's such a wonderful gift to give a daughter
My mother loved to stitch also. We should all cherish our mothers as you do Katie. Thanks for all you share to this community
Mothers are a treasure to be cherished! I'm so thankful for mine
Your mother is such a delite. It is wonderful that you share a love of needle work with your mother. Love you both.
Thank you - she really is the best!
I don't own a lot of mother of pearl items but do love them.
I love the sampler and can't wait for its release!
Getting there! I will be thrilled when I finally finish this and can start moving towards releasing it!
Great video once again. Your samplers are spectacularly. Can’t wait for the tutorial. Oh my that basket is amazing and will have to email Jackie. Mother what a word, I sure miss mine. Yes she also did needlework. Thank you again for all you share.
Definitely! There are several variations, all stunning - this was just my favorite but truly, I could have bought them all!
Can’t wait to see finish on Britomart sampler, it is so lovely! Being a Mother is one of life’s greatest joys! ❤️
I can't wait to see the finish either! It has been quite a journey
I had a fabulous mother and grandmother and miss them both so much! Love the fabulous mother of pearl thread pallets too! How thoughtful!
It was such a lovely gift from Jackie!
Oh my goodness Katie... Beauty overload!! The Britomart sampler is just stunning. I so enjoy hearing your process and seeing your progress! That Mother of pearl basket is killing me. I saw her post on FB about it and seeing it again makes me really twitch. Cant wait to see your sparkle tutorial... I adore the way you make patterns your own and who doesn't need more sparkle in their life???? Happy stitching🌹🏵🌷🌼
Thank you Katherine! The Britomart sampler truly has been a labor of love, and such a journey!
My Mother taught me to sew, my Grandmother taught me to embroider. Miss them both.
My mother taught me to sew as well - it's such a wonderful gift and legacy
I would enjoy having the mother of pearl pieces.
A wonderful addition to any stitcher's collection!
Mother. Love both my mom and Jackie
Both wonderful women, undoubtedly!
Mother of pearl - so lovely!
It's just gorgeous!
OMG the mother of pearl thread keeps are so dainty and adorable. Thanks Katie for another great video.
Thank you for watching!
Oh i definitely need one of those Mother Of Pearl baskets 😍 See you in 2 weeks my friend💕
I can't wait! And Jackie will have you covered - I think she's bringing a full pop up shop of fabulousness to Summer School. I can't believe it's almost here - my kits are fully assembled, I'm ready, and yet I'm still freaking out all ONLY TWO WEEKS WHERE DID THE TIME GO
Mother! The sweetest usage of this word is from my son, in all its permutations.
Most definitely!
My mother was truly a woman of valor!
The mother of pearl is absolutely beautiful
It is so lovely!
My mom is the sweet and kind person.
Moms are the best!
Yes! And special one🎉❤🎉
Mother of pearl in amazing.
It is!
I confess to ordering a mop tulip pin keep from Jackie after the last flosstube. Do I need a mop basket to go with the pin keep?……. Fits in the short flat casket…… Of course I do!
You say confess, like it's something bad!! She'll be at Summer School for a pop up shop with lots of pretties - I'm sure I'll be adding to my own collection...
Love Jackie’s Mother of Pearl items!
They are fabulous!
Oh, Katie! I am thinking that you are going to have a hard time practicing "sweet humility" with the beauties on this video!! Your sampler is coming out just fabulously! I do see your dilemma with those carnations though... all the best with figuring that out! I would never have thought to purchase this pattern, but seeing yours is really tempting me! The Britomart sampler is, of course, simply jaw-dropping! I have really appreciated watching your journey designing this piece, it has made me realize just how difficult and time-consuming designing can be. It makes me have a greater appreciation for what goes into the patterns that I purchase! There is just something so quietly elegant about Mother-of-pearl.
Thank you! And yes, there's a reason the original verse got dropped - I'm not sure sweet humility really describes me very well! As to design, it would be so interesting to have a window into other designers' heads, to see what the experience is like for them. Mine seems to really be quite tortured - in a good and absorbing way, that provides an engaging challenge - but I think that's the duality of being highly creative and a perfectionist. I don't really know if that's a normal design process or not...
I miss stitching with my mother x
It's a truly special pleasure
I only had my Mother for half of my life but I will treasure those years forever and know some day we will be together again. ❤
Absolutely - I don't think those we love are ever very far from us, if they're alive in our hearts
I love my mother and mother of pearl!
Both wonderful things!
Oh, another pink fix! 💕. I love my mother even more than I love pink 🤣
Now that is praise indeed! Me too - mothers are a treasure to be cherished
Are you able to roll the twill on the Millennium frame? I have shorter stretcher bands for mine, but there are occasions when this might be helpful. The sampler is amazing! My mother was not a stitcher (or a crafter in any sense), but she was always an enthusiastic supporter of my stitching and quilting. Would love to see more of you mother's stitching and jackets.
I haven't tried - I cut the twill to the length of the bars, and will extend it as necessary. I think it would disrupt the way the Millennium frame tensions the fabric vertically, but that is also just a guess. And my mother will be back on after Summer School!
I have been a fangirl of mother of pearl since I was a kid. Naturally. What little girl doesn't live anything that makes rainbows!? Where do you get your caskets? I would love to create one and fill it with treasures inside of treasures!
Thistle Threads! Unfortunately the active period of their manufacture has passed - Tricia now only has the short flat style left, and they're available only as fully kitted projects but of course you can use the materials however you like: thistle-threads.myshopify.com/products/harmony-with-nature-casket
Please Katie, if you have any connections, i cannot find a drum to finish my chocolate hearts
Well you would use the Chocolate Harts as the top, so fit to a circle, and then build the sides around it with the fabric of your choice - circumference is 2(pi)r so easy enough to calculate, and then can be carefully fitted to your prepared top.
Katie, beautiful work - where can a girl get come of that beautiful linen?
Any LNS can order it for you, but Hoop & Frame stocks it, and I believe the Attic and Needle in a Haystack have it as well
Katie what do you use to support your work whilst stitching?, as usual a very enjoyable and informative video.
Thank you! I use a Lowery stand, which for my taste is easily the best product on the market. I've had mine for over a decade with no apparent signs of wear and tear - and that thing gets very heavy use!
What do you use for the drum?
For finishing? Wool roving, which is what I always stuff with - very controlled and gives an excellent shape
Mother of Pearl…can it get any better than that? Ummmmm I don’t think so!😋😋
Definitely not! So gorgeous
@@katiestrachanembroidery thank you so much for featuring the little MOP basket Katie, I ordered mine yesterday! If I hadn’t seen your video I never would have known Jackie was selling items. Obviously I’ve remedied my lack of knowledge in that area!🤣🤣
Mother
My Mother lives with us. And I love the thread keeps made from Mother of pearl. ❤
Mothers of all kinds are precious!
