Playing 20 Different CD/DVD Formats With AI Assistance
Переглядів 13 тис.18 днів тому
I'm using AI to help me play back 20 different CD/DVD disc formats in five different vintage players. The "AI Disc Detector" uses a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Pi Pico along with a webcam, motor, and OLED display in an old coffee maker. As I go through the history of each disc format and the machine that plays it back, I'll be interspersing bits about how the Disc Detector works. Some of the tech used...

Turn a Raspberry Pi into a relaxing high-tech white noise machine for drowning out unwanted sounds. A great starter project because it can be made with minimal parts and you can add more features at any time by adding additional parts. In this video, we even build one into an old 1980s table radio. The device has a built in web server for remote browser control and for uploading additional soun...

Rt. 15 Fast Food Highway 1981
Переглядів 19 тис.9 років тому
I was always fascinated by the fast food restaurant selection on Rt. 15 near Selinsgrove, PA so I shot this film when I was a kid. Traveling north, we see Gary's Farm House, Wendy's, Golden Corral, Budget Bakery, McDonald's, Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, and Pizza Hut. Then we go over the old two lane bridge into Sunbury. On the return trip south, we see KFC, Burger King, Rax, Bonanza (Sirloi...

Oh yeah, I am going to mess this whole house up. Keep your channel up so when I need some help.....😆
Just beautiful. I wish I knew how to do that. 😮
I am amazed! i loved this ! greetings from Italy!!
A modern Pa Kettle device.
It's only a few IQ points that separates someone who knows this is deliberately unnecessary from a tech bro seeing dollar signs in his eyes for the most vital innovation since the Juicero.
Who's here after watching this guy's excellent "playing 20 different CD/DVD formats with AI Assistance" video 18 years later! 😁
I oddly liked the project and video. I never realized there were so many formats.
21:20 MQA is not very good..
knowing the flow rate after I flush my toilet is very important to me.
This is so cool! Thanks for sharing.
That's not a Home Assistant panel, that's a friggin Russian Nuclear Sub control panel. You aren't fooling anyone Boris.
I learnt something today. I learnt that Dan Castellaneta's brother has a UA-cam channel.
Bro are you artistic or smth
I tried to like this video over 6 times. Thank you for the top notch video!
Great work
Physical media 💿📀is King'. 👑 and always will be period!' 🏆✨
Somebody has a lot of free time
Thanks from india keep it up..
I still have my first gen pi too! the old RCA output never fails to come handy
Interesting video. I was surprised that the dvd player could not play the photo and picture cd's. Or maybe it could? It's a pity you skipped a few discs though, especially the dual disk. I would of loved to have seen that play. Funny thing though, the last physical media I bought was in about 1997 which was a dvd of Beverly Hills Cop 1,2 and 3. I've never owned a blu ray player. Never seen the point. My eyes cannot detect the difference between a dvd and blu ray. They look the same to me. I did buy blank blu ray disks back in 2018 to store data on though.
Only the Kodak player can play Photo CDs but a few of the others will play Picture CDs... I can visually detect a DVD vs. a Blu-ray, but not always a Blu-ray vs UHD Blu-ray!
You remind me of technology connections.
Thanks, that's a huge complement!
This video reminded me about why I would really like to get my hands on a fully working Denon DVD-2910. A while ago I bought a working Philips Blu-Ray player at a flea market because these days it mostly just Philips that supports VCD formats and I have one VCD that I wanted to be able to play plus I was only able to play Blu-Ray and DVD films using a computer. So would also be nice with a dedicated player for this.
Would be great if it could identify Sony MiniDisc's 💽 too. I know you don't have any on hand but would be interesting. 😁
Wait what? Doctor Strangelove was part of the Warner Kubrick Box? WHAT? A Columbia Tristar SNAPPER case? In what timeline did i end up? This movie was NEVER part of the Warner Kubrick Box. :O Just as "Paths of Glory".
Yet again, another gross misuse of the term "AI". Here I thought it was analyzing the characteristics of the data side (track width, color, reflectivity, etc). I don't need this thing, I have my *own* combo "AI" system; my eyes and my brain.
This is the most ridiculously unneeded thing I've seen in awhile, and its absolutely incredible!
There’s guys who recreate aircraft switches who have perfected the two tone printing. They are the light up buttons with the text inside the lamp, so more informative. I think I would have used two screens, one for status and a second touch screen to interact. Then power it down if everyone was asleep. Nice build 👍
Lol omg that's so cool.
And now, for some coffee 🎉😂
Interesting video! Have a large collection of these rare & hybrid CD formats including several dozens of DVD-Audio discs thanks to my local thrift store getting thousands of them. There is one rare format you missed. Nuon was a company started by former engineers from Atari who had an interesting idea to build a hybrid DVD player & game console. The promise was that you could add fully interactive dynamic content to the DVD format but it had some bells and whistles with normal DVDs like smooth forward/backward and slow-mo playback. The players are super rare and cost $$$ but got a Samsung model on eBay before anyone had any idea. The famous Jeff ‘Llamatron’ Minter was involved with the development and when you put in a music CD, you are rewarded with an awesome light show.
Wow, Nuon is rare. That would have been a neat one!
You couldn’t play video-cds on a cd-i player from stock, you had to buy an MPEG extension card for the player as well.
Wow Alan, as usual you have outdone yourself! If you ever come across a Oppo UDP-203/205, grab it - it plays *everything*. Now I'm going to have to dig mine up and update it's firmware (latest release 2019!). And of course repurpose the coffee maker I knew I saved for some reason!
FWIW I expected this video to be you pretending to be a zoomer who never touched a cd before and asking chatgpt how to play them and getting weird responses such as gpt asking you to shove one into your ear or something
What i find silly is you can watch dvd's in a bluray player but not otherwise bluray to a dvd yet someone told me long ago it's only a codec to change . Similar goes why when the dvd's were released we still had Zone 1,2,3,4,... which the promise from the dvd marketing was to avoid such problems . I still have many videos "divx and other formats" only my Yamaha piano craft can read the Thomson, LG not . Similar goes for Playstation, Xbox, Cd-rom/dvd-rom players they could easily read each other formats in each other players . So imho the brands are scamming us since decades only for the money . I also remember the VHS video cassettes Pal & Secam the biggest stupidity ever . I would buy that coffee machine for $1 😂😂
Thank you... where is the repository ?
github.com/alanb128/pi-vcr
I literally checked the description to see if it was some kind of April fools video
Doesn’t support laserdisks.
Where that Mil-CD at bro Edit: typed this to be silly, that was before you pulled out the coffee machine, proving this video is already properly silly on it's own. Edit 2: And now i regret my silly comment cause you made something genuinely awesome and pretty mind blowing. What an awesome way to re-purpose something unrelated to do exactly what you need it to, and it looks damn nice doing it!
MQA was proved to be a scam, it 's as clear as a normal, CD-quality FLAC file but is encoded in a weird format.
Wow amazing 🎉
I'm a really big fan of SACD and have quite a sizeable collection of discs and believe it has enough support to be around for some time yet. Many thanks for a very interesting video and your modified coffee machine for detecting the various disc formats is marvellous.
More impressive would have been for it to read the playing side of the disc to determine what type of disc it is. I can do that for most with my own eyes. There were a few HD-DVDs and even a few Blu-Ray discs that were 2-sided, with a regular DVD on the other side. There were also a few HD-DVDs that worked like hybrid SACDs and had both formats on one side, the regular DVD layer played as normal in other players and on HD-DVD players you can tell it which one you want it to play. Don’t forget 3-inch discs also.
Overengeneering.
Wait are we the 1st of April ?!!!
I remember one "format" was a dvd you'd get from a vending machine that would activate an acid onto exposure to air giving only a short amount of time to play the disc before it became unusable...so wasteful!
Perhaps an addition to the "coffee maker" could be a barcode scanner that would could identify from a case any media your had ripped (or have on a streaming service) and then playback that so as to give you the tactile experience of physical media and the convieniace and functionality of computer-based playback
That cd text didn't have an immediate uptake (to rell you the basics such as aing name) tells you something about about how record companies care aboit the consumer and the product they are making for them. "Minamal vivable product" maximum possible price
The reason photocd can load so fast is that as well as the hi-res copies there is lower resolution versions too and as its showing on tv, thats what its loading
Ah, that makes sense, thanks!
Saw my same coffee maker in the thumbnail and had to watch. Great concept!
Wow, you've got the HDCD version of "Our Love is Loud". 😂
