Brilliant or just bad? Lamy Safari Violet Blackberry Fountain Pen Review

Lamy really went out on a limb with their 2024 special edition Lamy Safaris: the Violet Blackberry and the Pink Cliff. To my knowledge, Lamy has never done this kind of multicolored (and multi-textured) design. Did they go too far? Or did their risk pay off? In this video, I show you my Violet Blackberry Lamy Safari fountain pen and offer my thoughts on it, as well as the Pink Cliff, which I un...
I made the smallest notebook in the world (well, almost . . . I think)
Переглядів 5932 місяці тому
I've been getting into bookbinding so I can make DIY notebooks for my writing projects. I decided to challenge myself to make the smallest notebook I could using a single sheet of A5 Tomoe River paper. The result is a cute notebook that holds a surprising 60 pages! I did some research into how small mine is compared to handbound notebooks others have made, and as far as I can tell, I came close...

5 Notebooks Better Than Moleskine (Especially for Fountain Pens)
Переглядів 183 тис.3 місяці тому
Moleskine journals are very popular, but they aren't the best notebook in their price range. Especially if you are using fountain pens, you will most likely have a poor experience. The paper bleeds, and the construction of the Moleskine notebook isn't as durable as it could be. So, what notebooks are better than Moleskine? Here are five alternatives I recommend: Midori MD 3:59 Clairefontaine 19...

How to fix a loose cap on a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

I have the pink cliff, love it. I wish the violet blackberry was also matte, though. I don’t like the glossy safaris.
Thanks very much. I was getting frustrated but this method worked very well
I am not sure about their journal quality but oxford is a brand with great fountain pen paper! I am a student from germany and most of us were taught to write with a fountain pen, so oxford is pretty popular here. I guess you could compare them to clairefontaine.
Well if your poor youtube and redit doesn't matter 😂😂
Leuchturm for the win, every time. Graph squares layout is my favourite, followed by the dot grid layout. I love the paper - very tactile and not glaring white.
I love Dingbats notebooks as my go to. Great build quality and amazing paper at 160 gsm. Just the right amount of feedback and great with fountain pens.
You have a beautiful lamp.
I wanted to love Leuchtturm, but whenever I would use my fountain pens there would be certain spots on the page that would not pick up my ink at all. Outright reject it, like it's waterproof. Here in Finland I discovered Victoria's journals, and I simply fell in love with the paper! Such good quality!
What is that desk in the background?
It's one a friend of mine literally picked up off the side of the road before trash day because he knew I was looking for a desk. Haha It's a good little desk, but it's essentially just an Ikea-style build-it-yourself kind of thing.
If you have fabric fix glue it adheres fabric to fabric or fabric to other material well.
Thanks for that tip! I have a lot to learn about various types of glue that are used for different materials and purposes.
Hi any first mechanical pencil recommendations? Thanks! Doing lots of math and want something comfortable.
That's a great question! I don't know as much about pencils as I do about pens, but I do know there are a lot of cool options out there for mechanical pencils. A lot of popular pen companies also make cool looking pencils, like Kaweco, Retro 51, and probably Faber Castell. I know Rotring pencils are very popular, though I've heard that maybe they aren't as good as they used to be. I hope that helps!
@@DowntheBreatherHole Thanks! I just picked up online a Midori Graph Ruled and a Rotring 600 for the grip. If I dont like that one I will likely try one of those other brands thanks! What is the first fountain to try that would be beginner friendly? That will likely be another one I would like to try when I am creating flow charts for development.
@@DJRanoia my first fountain pen was the pilot metropolitan, and I still think it's a great option for beginners. The fine nib is extremely fine, and the pen comes with everything you need to get started.
@@DowntheBreatherHoleperfect thanks! And happy Memorial Day! Will be picking this up next week after I get my new notebook setup.
Reusing at least some of the staple holes can help index the paper. After all, they lined up in the first place. It also minimizes how many extra holes you're putting through the section if you're worried about the integrity of the paper. Das bookbinding is also a pretty good resource. I've found his stuff very easy to follow.
Thanks, yeah for this attempt I defaulted to what I've done with my home made notebooks. I was mostly focused on spacing the stitching evenly. But in the future I'll probably try your suggestion.
Greatly edited and very professional! You deserve more praise
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I use a gel ink pen on my Moleskin with no problems.
Yeah, gel pens should be fine for Moleskine paper. It's fountain pens that struggle with the poor quality paper the most. But the other notebooks I've mentioned still have better overall build quality.
Almost ANYTHING is better than Moleskine if you are using fountain pens. I hope a lot of people see this video. Moleskine has coasted because of good marketing and early appearance when good notebooks were not as common.
Yeah, even copy paper is often better than Moleskine. Haha
New update! I'm now selling my own handmade notebooks on Etsy! I only have a few left but hope to add more soon. Check them out before they're gone! Link: downthebreatherhole.etsy.com
I have Waterman Parker and Scrivener.
The Parker Jotter XL is 30 dollars.
Namiki white Rabbit 12k for one.
I used to buy only moleskine and then I noticed my ink starting to not write on sections of the paper. I bought a Leuchturm1917 and sold all of my unused moleskines on eBay.
Selling your extra Moleskine notebooks on eBay is genius! One of these days I'll probably sell my stationery surplus there as well.
Moleskine quality cratered when they outsourced to China. The paper quality and construction was noticeably better.
I wonder if there’s a way to degrease the page. Prior to writing.
Not that I know of. Fortunately, I don't have the fingerprint problem with Leuchtturm1917, Rhodia, Clairefontaine, or Midori. So the easiest solution is just to stick with reliable fountain pen paper.
killer secret - those marble notebooks used by engineers all around the world - including on the Big bang Theory are the best notebooks
Do you mean Karst Stone Paper? I've been very curious, but I worry that it will be abrasive on fountain pen nibs and wear away the tipping over time.
Ohh I love the way you talk! Moleskine was a topic in my university script about Storytelling. This shows how much good storytelling sales even tho there are other alternatives, which might be even better. Super interesting video, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Moleskine does have very strong marketing on their side. If only the construction and paper quality could match their marketing.
Update! Both of my TWSBI Ecos have cracked at the end of the grip section, which means they leak ink onto my fingers as I write. I think the problem probably arose from me tinkering and nib-swapping too much, so maybe it's my fault. However, TWSBI, as far as I know, encourages tinkering, so it's sad to see that their pens can't hold up to it. I'm sure TWSBI would help me replace the cracked parts, but this experience has made me not really want to use my TWSBI fountain pens anymore, and I no longer recommend them.
I've never and an issue with the quality or paper of the Moleskine. I think this is because they're not meant to last for extended periods of time. If you write in them, you go through them faster than they wear.
I guess that might be true. But I still hold to my point that there are more durable notebooks with higher quality paper in the same price range.
The Leutchtturm1917 has been my go to for years after switching from Moleskine. The numbered pages and dotted ruling are a game changer. From a leather maker, I bought a cover that protects the notebook. Such a great product.
A leather slip cover + Leutchtturm1917 notebook sounds amazing!
Welcome to the inky goodness of swatching!!!!! I am in love with your syringe tip!! Thanks!! I’m totally trying that!! I make watercolors with my leftover ink from the syringe.
Nice! I'm glad you liked that tip. It's a lot of fun, and I like how the results look.
I love love love my Rhodia notebook (softcover). Since I prefer saturated and wet inks the Leuchtturm paper is not the right choice for me. The orange details of the Rhodia a really fun and the paper is heavenly smooth.
Rhodia is a great choice! Their 90gsm ivory paper is probably my all-time favorite.
Great long term review. All of my twsbis have cracked on the inner threads in the cap
Mine have actually cracked as well, but mine cracked where the nib inserts into the grip section. Thanks for reminding me that I needed to make a pinned update comment for this video!
Helen Wang of The Coffee Monsterz UA-cam channel just posted her ink swatches in a notebook, but she cut up strips of paper from notebooks she typically uses. This way she can see how the ink colors contrast on different papers.
I looked it up! That's a really creative take on ink Swatching!
Still using Noodler’s?!?!? 🤢🤮
I actually don't use them much anymore. Are your problems with Noodler's political/social or related to the quality of the ink itself?
@@DowntheBreatherHole Both, but primarily Nathan Tardiff's antisemitism.
I definitely get that. It was a weird situation. I definitely don't see the world the same way Nathan Tardiff does. But I'm willing to believe that his apology and changes to his company were sincere. That's just me though. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to give him their business.
Hey Brian! I love the splatter idea! Now just to make a plan to not have my office look like Jackson Pollock painted it, although that could be cool as well. Thanks for sharing!
Haha it's not too bad. If you do it on a wide table or counter it's pretty easy to wipe up any splatters afterwards.
I use a cheap old t-shirt underneath my cards when i swatch and when I refill pens. I just like seeing the cotton get saturated with the ink and seeing it spread out. It also gets all the different colors on it and it's just fun. No, I don't plan to ever wear the shirt.
Do it, wear it! Haha. Great idea with the old t-shirt, thanks for that! My wife may even be excited by me “getting rid of an old t-shirt”! Thanks for the idea!
Love the back of the pen. Great idea!
Thanks! Yeah, I think I got it from a reel on Instagram. Haha
Before gluing, make sure the right side of the fabric is facing down. You want to glue the cardboard to the wrong side of the fabric.😊
You can also use a fountain pen as a dip pen. No need to fill it up if you are doing multiple inks. You’ll need to rinse it off but won’t need to fully clean.
That's a good idea, though even just dipping the nib in ink might draw a slight amount of ink up inside the feed, so before you do a true fill with that pen, you might want to do a good flush, just in case.
I got into foundation pen for improving handwriting , i can say your handwriting is not yet improved after so long 😂😂
I like my handwriting.
I’m glad to see you are having fun with the inks! Sorry about any spills in the mail. I wish I could keep that from happening. I enjoyed this video because I have been reconsidering how I do my swatching. I have always swatched several different inks in the same color family on one sheet of paper. This makes the swatches hard to reorganize. I have a new idea for organizing swatches and I am looking for a good time to try it out.
No trouble at all, Sara. I've had brand new inks leak in the mail too. You packed everything amazingly well. The only real trouble is that one of the labels you added to a Robert Oster ink bottle has been inked over, so I don't know what the ink is. haha If you happen to remember what you put in there, let me know. It's the one that was in with the Troublemakers bottle.
That might have been Leonardo Officina Italiana Black.
I hope the ink didn’t get on everything in the box.
Nope! Not to worry. It was just a leak in one small bag. Everything else was fantastic.
@@DowntheBreatherHole Oh, good!
Thank you for sharing, mate. Using the back end of the glass dip pen is a brilliant idea! I too was keeping a list of inks in the back of what-ever-journal I was using at the time. Indeed, this is not a good idea. This is a timely video as I just bought myself a dedicated Rhodia Spiral Notebook to swatch all of my inks in (with a dedicated ink swatch stamp).
Nice! A Rhodia notebook is a great idea. I love their paper.
I use 3x5 index cards cut in half with Q-Tips. Work great. Cheap. I use a dip pen to write.
Good idea! I used to use Q-Tips all the time with ink. I still do from time to time.
I have some of those Wearingeul cards on order to do my first swatching, so this is a timely video for me. :) Love the ink syringe technique - I think that gives a really cool effect.
Nice! Yeah, I like the effect of spraying the ink too.
I very much buy notebooks based on the ribbons and elastics. Obsessed with both features.
Of the bunch I talked about, I'd say Leuchtturm has the best ribbons. As far as elastics, I'm not sure who does it better. I haven't noticed a big difference between brands.
@@DowntheBreatherHole Thank you for the observations! It is definitely easier to find quality ribbon as opposed to elastics. My main things that I look for are: not too wide, snug, long lasting and the color I am looking for. I use different notebooks for different things and usually have an overall color theme.
Just a thought, but maybe punch the holes before you remove the staples. The center one could come out to punch the middle one, but the other two can remain to keep the pages aligned while punching the holes.
Yeah, that's a good idea. As I planned this video, I had a few different ideas for how to approach it, and I ultimately defaulted to more or less my normal bookbinding routine. But if I could do it again, I would probably follow your suggestion.
It seems to me that if you bind it before removing the staples, then you're guaranteed that everything lines up (at least as well as before) without any extra steps. Anyways, thanks for the idea.
Yeah, true.
i was thinking more of @PracticalEngineeringChannel for the likeness comparison 😅
haha I could see that. I have more hair though. LOL
Thanks for the video. Love those bright yellow covers. If you are.ip for a new idea...why not try a "travellers notebook" type of binding? You put an elastic along the spine and can refill with new pages whenever you need. You will find tutorials for this on YT very easily.
Thanks! I'll have to check that out.
Hi, I had a question. There are quite a few viles of ink that I will never put in a pen just don’t like the color. What do you do with them?
I save a lot of mine for art projects. I've also given some away to friends. You're welcome to send your unused ink samples to me. ;)
